Rothe Erde Turntables –Products of proven quality
Rothe Erde turntables havebeen developed exclusively forinstallation in vehicle trailers.Their purpose is to transmitboth the axial load, thrust andtraction forces. None of theirparts is susceptible to wear.
The standard series turntablesshown in this brochure are theresult of many years’ designand manufacturing experiencein the field of bogie steeringsystems.
Rothe Erde turntables are builtto the highest manufacturingstandards and are designed tomeet extremely high perform-ance requirements.
Each turntable consists of twosteel rings designed for flangemounting. The raceways aremachined so as to ensure thatthe load transmission is favour-ably directed between the antifriction bearing steel ballsthat are fitted. An initial filling ofgrease protects the racewaysystem.

Delivery
The turntables are supplied as either undrilled or drilled bea-rings with the standard typebeing filled with lithium-saponi-fied grease of penetration grade2 and the low-maintenance typewith MOLYKOTE Longterm 2plus.

Delivery.
Every turntable is coated with a primer and can therefore bepainted at the same time as thetrailer. The primer is based on asynthetic resin compound.Attention: if coloured, checkcompatibility with the coatingvarnish!

If the customer drills the moun-ting holes himself, the typeplate (filler plug) must be offsetto the direction of travel byapprox. 45° (for types 90 S and90 WA inside at the upper ring).Mounting holes are not allowedin the area around the typeplate.

10 Installation.
Installation
Turntables must be mounted onthe flattest and most distortionproof structure possible. It isessential that at least 50% ofthe peripheral surfaces of theflanges are supported load bea-ring zones and that these latterare roughly equispaced in thedirection of travel and at rightangles to this.
The essential factor here is tosupport the profiled webs of theturntable, thus assuring directforce transmission into the ballraceways. Total out-of-flatness1.3 mm, permissible are forexample 0.8 mm up and 0.5mm down. Larger out-of-flat-nesses have to be compensa-ted by suitable measures(machining of the contact surfa-ces or captive shims in therespective contact area).
The turntable must be fastenedusing at least 8 Grade 8.8 boltsper ring. The bolt lockingsystem must comply with theTÜV’s (German Technical Con-trol Board’s) requirements orwith the prevailing approvalregulations.
The horizontal forces resultingfrom acceleration or decelera-tion must be transmitted by pla-tes welded to the mating struc-tures so as to relieve the load onthe bolts in the radial direction.
To prevent distortion fromoccurring, turntables mustnever be welded on to theirmating structures.
The load details and the boltconnection are only valid foroperation on roads and undertransport conditions as usual inWest Europe.

11Lubrication and Maintenance.Special Applications.
Lubrication and MaintenanceType 90 Turntables
Prior to installation, the turnta-ble must be regreased whilstturning the upper ring until agrease collar appears at all bea-ring gaps around the entirecircumference. A penetrationgrade 2 lithium-saponified gre-ase should be used for regrea-sing. Regreasing should also becarried out after installation,rotating the turntable to achieveuniform grease distribution. Theintervals for relubrication andexamination of the preload ofthe bolt connections are deter-mined by the installation requi-rements and operating condi-tions. However, the turntablemust be lubricated at least oncea month (please observe trafficauthority requirements, TÜV,etc.).
The “as-supplied“ bearing clea-rances shown in the bearingtables may be allowed to in-crease through wear by a maxi-mum of 3 mm axially andradially. Thereafter, the turnta-ble must be replaced.
MaintenanceType 90 WA Turntables
Our 90 WA turntables are provi-ded with long-term lubricationfor a maintenance-free periodof 3 years minimum or a mile-age of 300,000 kms.
This service period can beextended by relubrication withMolykote Longterm 2 plus (DowCorning, Wiesbaden).
In case of applications withextreme environmental condi-tions specific maintenanceinstructions have to be estab-lished.
The turntables are equippedwith grease fittings. Regreasingor a connection to the vehiclelubrication system is possible.
The preload check of the boltconnections is to be specifiedaccording to the prevailinginstallation requirements andoperating conditions (pleaseobserve traffic authority require-ments, TÜV, etc.).
We recommend to perform a clearance check in conjunctionwith acceptance procedures byTÜV or other accredited testingagencies. If the measurementshows an axial or radial clearan-ce in excess of 3 mm, the turn-table will have to be replaced.
Special Applications
If Types 16, 80 or 90 turntablesare installed in vehicles capableof reaching a speed of up to 25km/h, the permissible axialload may be increased byapprox. 40%, depending on thediameter of the turntable.Please contact us for moredetails.
