Lights, camera, action!

We all know video killed the radio star (well if you’re born before 1975 you do), but video is also putting Round Table on the map – at long last!

No longer needing to lump around a video camera and a production team to put it together, a smartphone and an app is more or less all you need nowadays.

You can always go the extra mile though, and get your own personal drone!

On the past month, three ‘creatives’ at Tables across the country have put together their own videos which are great promotional tools.

We want more of these good quality videos to put on the RTBI You Tube channel and who knows, maybe part of something much bigger.

To give you an idea check out these from events organised by Banchory, Knowle & Dorridge and Romsey, Chandlers Ford Round Tables.

England rugby ace backs #nutnominate

Former England rugby international Victor Ubogu is set to play a key role in tackling testicular cancer after becoming an ambassador for the awareness campaign #nutnominate.

Ubogu, who won 24 caps for England, is fully behind the campaign aimed at ensuring men take action if they discover funny shaped balls!

It was launched in September by Julian Webb, a proactive member of Lichfield Round Table, who had been given the all clear having being diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2011.

Testicular cancer mainly effects men aged 18-45, the same age demographic for members of Round Table, but survival rates are at 98 per cent if caught early enough.

Ubogu, who now runs VU Ltd, a successful sports hospitality and corporate events company in Bath, said: “As someone who made a career out of handling odd shaped balls, I’m delighted to support #nutnominate.

“In the dressing room at Twickenham, men’s health and testicular cancer wasn’t something you discussed with your team-mates.

“In my playing days, I think most men did keep concerns to themselves. However, as you reach a ripened age, I’ve sadly seen cases where early recognition could have prevented a premature loss of some great men, so I’m pleased that the campaign is pushing men to grow some balls and talk about it!!

Webb, who has seen the online awareness campaign grow since its launch three months ago, said: “I am re-ally pleased Victor Ubogu has agreed to join us as the face of #Nutnominate.

“As an ex-England rugby player, his reputation and status in the sporting arena will enable us to reach out and educate more young men to

be aware and check themselves regularly for testicular cancer. It’s all about catching it early.

The campaign is across a number of social media channels. For more information log on to www.nutnominate.com

GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELANDdo MoreHow did the idea come about and when?Cotswold Mini (local dealership) supported us with our Summer Ball this year and had a display of cars at the ball. When we were returning the cars on Sunday morning we joked about what fun it would be if they would loan us some cars to do our own Mini Adventure. After dropping the cars off we went for Sunday lunch, enthusiastically planning this hypothetical trip, and so the idea was born. A couple of emails and phone calls later and Mini had confirmed they liked the idea!

Tell us about the planning: the hampers, the cars, and the logistics

Many man hours were spent planning the trip which, as I have mentioned above, began by seeking the support of Cotswold Mini. Once they were on board we started to ‘put some meat on the bones’ and create some justification for what was bound to be four days of epic fun. So, we decided to raise sponsorship of £1,000 per car, every penny of which would be given back to needy causes within our local community. We soon had 12 members signed up who, on paper, we paired together in six cars which was going to generate £6,000 in sponsorship. So then we decided to take our six cars, worth £6,000, to visit 6 Round Tables in France. Having decided to go we thought it would be a nice gesture to take each Table a gift so we took six beautiful hampers, made by Country Flavours, full of local produce including eggs, crisps, cider, juices, biscuits and cakes. We also added a copy of our weekly paper, a local society magazine and finally a Hereford Round Table polo shirt. Having decided on the purpose and some of the content we set about planning the detail and deciding exactly where to visit.

hereford go on a mini adventure

You decided on France and meeting Tables across the channel...did you know any of the Tables?

We chose France as it was the most accessible overseas Table for us to get to but had never previously grouped up with anyone from France.

Are you seasoned international Tablers?

In fact, we have never undertaken any International Tabling so this was a first for Hereford Round Table.

Tell us about the logistics

I contacted our National IRO who immediately gave me the contact details of French National IRO, Arnaud Schuell. I duly emailed Arnaud who couldn’t have been more helpful and provided me with email contacts for each of the areas we were aiming to visit. One of our members has good local knowledge having taken a number of motorbike touring holidays through

northern France so he suggested a number of towns and cities that would be suitable overnight stops. Then, via the information supplied by Arnaud, I established which towns had Round Table groups established and we settled on Arras for the first night, Reims for night two and

then Dijon for our final night.

The first evening in Arras saw us attending an area meeting that they had arranged and met members from two other Tables from Lille and a Table from Peronne as well as witnessing a new member induction. This alone was an eye-opener. I don’t know about other UK

Prom early bird ticket offer deadline loomsThe party season may well be upon us…but time is running out to secure an early bird ticket for the biggest of them all – The Strictly Red Carpet Prom!

A night of opulence and glamour is being prepared amongst the wild animals of the West Midlands (no not Area 5 – or 35 for that matter) – but at the Safari Park near Bewdley, home town of the 2014/15 RTBI president Steve Glaister.

There promises to be lots of surprises, some wining and dining and a dress code that really is one where you dress to impress, especially if you’re treading the Red Carpet and want to dazzle the paparazzi.

Tickets are currently priced at £50 per person but will increase to £55 from January 1, 2015.

The Prom is being held on Saturday March 7, and free transportation is being provided from key hotels in nearby Kidderminster (full details on the website).

For more information (and to see a neatly crafted video) go to www.strictlyredcarpet.co.uk and also find on Facebook at facebook.com/strictlyredcarpet

Tables but our welcomes in Hereford are incredibly tame compared to what we witnessed!

This man was made to enjoy a drinks reception followed by a delicious three course dinner, with obligatory welcoming speeches from them and thank you speech from me, dressed in divers flippers and topless other than a big curly wig coupled with armbands, a snorkel and mask! Not humiliated enough as soon as dinner was finished ‘Eric’ was put through an apparently common

ritual which included fishing an egg out of a bucket of water with only his mouth then dipping said egg, along with his wet face, in a large bowl of flour before eating the egg. As if he needed any more throwing at him he then had to stand in front of the entire room (50 people) whilst his sponsor spent a good 10 minutes introducing us to Eric, his family, his school life and his love life all via a slide show of embarrassing photos and stories. At various points he was asked to remember certain facts about his life so far as well as the history of Arras Round Table and for every question he got wrong (of which there were quite a few!) he had to down a drink. Eventually the public spectacle came to an end and he was finally allowed to get dressed and enter into the more formal part of his induction which culminated with his presentation of abadge and the apparently recent tradition of a local fire hydrant too.

Friday began rather leisurely, giving us an opportunity to recover from the previous evening. En route to Reims, locals stopped and stared and many gave us a cheery wave as our convoy of six branded Mini’s passed through. As soon as we arrived in Reims we were off to meet our Table contact, Christophe. Unfortunately they were unable to organise a formal evening with us however we met Christophe and another fellow member in La George pub, exchanging stories enjoying a couple of beers with them until they had to leave.

The following morning, we headed south to Dijon - the French roads really are fantastic, smooth and clear making for some great driving in convoy and formation! 300km later and we arrived at our final destination and within the hour had been met by Stéphane Marchand, a most welcoming host and guide. Stéphane had organised a social evening with several other members from Dijon 22 and Dijon 202 clubs at their headquarters, a stone arched room known as ‘the cave’ which is beneath a lovely restaurant.

Despite being fairly late we moved on to one of his favourite bars before Stéphane then took us on a night time tour of the city, a slightly unexpected experience at 2.30am but massively enjoyed by all.

What were the highlights..and the difficulties?

Less than 50 miles from home and one driver who was in another world sailed straight past our exit junction and we didn’t see those two again until we got to Calais! Unfortunately one car suffered a broken rear light after being reversed into a wall…apparently he didn’t hear the parking sensors!

Tell us more about Hereford Table?

We currently have 16 members

and it’s fairly youthful so should remain strong for years to come.

Our main fundraisers each year are a Summer Ball and the city Fireworks display. Last year we added the Three Peaks Challenge as a one off and this year we entered a dragon boat in the local river festival and came second. We plan another road trip, perhaps next year to a different country, but we have also been invited back to Dijon next year for a Euro meeting of Tables.

Ilkley & District Round Table are shocked and deeplysaddened by the loss of Tabler Sam Edson, who was killed in a tragic car accident on the 10th October 2014.

He was always keen to be a part of table and its corefundraising activities such as CiN, Ilkley RT’s Beer Festival and Santa Sleigh collections. Sam was also a remarkable guy. Witty, kind and generous, optimistic, calm and patient. When he talked you listened because it was always something worth listening to.

Family meant everything to Sam, he was an amazing, hands-on dad to Edie, Louis and Betsy and a truly devoted husband to his wonderful wife Sarah.

A true, honest and caring friend with an eclectic taste in music, funky hair and laid back approach to fashion.

His presence and influence will be greatly missed as will his no-nonsense approach and outlook, his coffee that took longerto make than drink and his unique dancing prowess.

He will be sorely missed by all at Ilkley Round Table and will never be forgotten nor will the memories we allhave of our time with him.

Our thoughts and support are now and always will be with his family he leaves behind.

Bideford vice chairman Edward Johns has completed a fantastic feat marking his 40th birthday, whilst raising thousands of pounds for a cause close to his heart.

Edward’s sister was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 and was treated atthe North Devon Chemotherapy unit.Locally, an appeal is running to raise £2.2 million to build a new unit for chemotherapy patients.

Deciding on a “Lands End and Back” challenge, Ed put out the call to fellow members of his Table and was joined by Bideford and Barnstaple Tablers, a Bideford Circler plus friends.

The ride took place on over September 26-27, with the 10 cyclists being blessed with good weather – just as well given it took 17 hours to complete the epic feat.

Such were their efforts, a cheque for £4,500 was presented to the North Devon Chemotherapy Appeal at the end of November.

There’s nothing more disappointing than a child who has missed out on the visit of Santa from the local Round Table.

Your routes are published, the team’s in place and then off you go - but as we know it doesn’t always go to plan.

To ensure that everyone knows where your Santa is, why not use the technology available and have your very own Santa tracker. PR committee member Paul Bryant (Tamworth RT), gives a simple guide to get Santa sat navved up for all the boys and girls!

1. Get an Android phone. This app only works on Android and I’m not aware of an iPhone alternative.

2. Install the ‘Real Time Tracker 2’ app from Google Play on your tracking phone if you’re running Android 4 or above. Here’s the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.greenalp.realtimetracker2&hl=en

If you’ve not got Android 4 but have Android 2.3 or above download this instead: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.greenalp.RealtimeTracker&hl=en

3. On your PC, go to www.greenalp.com and register your account. Then log into the app on your phone using your log in details.

Ok, the tracker is now set up and ready to work. What we need to do now is embed it in your Round Table website so members of the public can view it.

4. On your PC, a) Log into the Round Table website. b) Once logged in click ‘Admin Module’ at the top of the page. c) Click on ‘Content’. d) Click on ‘Pages’. e) Go down to ‘Our Table’, hover over the ‘Options’ on the right and click ‘Add Child’ f) Give your page a title, ‘Live Santa Tracker’ would do.

5. Here’s the slightly tricky part. At the top of the section that says ‘Page content;’ You say lots of things to click on. Click on ‘HTML’. A box called ‘HTML Source Editor’ opens up. You need to paste some code into this box. Go to the next step to get hold of the code.

6. Click on this link: http://www.greenalp.com/RealTimeTracker/index.php?page=framelicence This page has the code, you’ll see it in 2 boxes (one called greenalp.com logo and one called Iframe sample code). Copy the code from each of the 2 boxes and paste it (CTRL+V) into the ‘HTML Source Editor’ you have open on the Round Table website. Take close note of the instructions, particularly the one that says change the username from ‘demouser’ in the code.

7. Once both sets of code have been pasted into the ‘HTML Source Editor’ box. Click ‘update’ at the bottom of the box, the box will now close. Then click ‘Save and Publish’ at the bottom of the page. On the right, hover over the options for your new page. Click on ‘Approve’.

8. Send an email to [email protected] to request they enable your tracker on your website. Make sure to send them the username and the link to your Round table page.

9. You’re set up. Once Greenalp confirm it. Give it a test. Go into the app, click ‘start tracking’ and see if it works.

There was no escaping Pudsey bear on Friday 14th November as the Round Table family across the country pulled out all the stops for this year’s annual Children in Need fundraiser.

Railway stations, airports, shopping centres and even the odd pub or two all played host to the army of volunteers raising funds to enhance the lives of kids across the UK – all coordinated by Sheppey Tabler Caleb Watson.

In Aberdeen they brushed shoulders with one of Great Britain’s finest athletes as double Olympic gold medal winner Dame Kelly Holmes posed for a picture.

Round Table president collected in London in the morning before hot footing it back to Birmingham to team up with Tables from Area 35 in the city centre.

Social media went into over-drive while Tablers in the East and West of England both made it on to local BBC TV.

But it wasn’t just about one day as Tablers, Circlers, 41ers and Tangent members played a role in supporting The One Show’s Rickshaw Challenge. Nottingham and Coventry both came out in force – the latter even being told to curb their PR attempts!

Shirley 41er Martin Williams, a volunteer with the blood bikers, joined the Rickshaw team from Coventry providing the kids doing the cycling an escort all the way to Great Missenden on a 22 hour day!

“They are absolute stars and deserve every bit of praise for what they have done to say nothing of the money they have raised for all the other Children in Need,” said Martin.

Ladies Circle VP Zoe Gaskill, lead motivator for Circle, baked for success in Lincoln with LC Area 28, all of it captured for BBC camera crew, while Zoe and few other LC members found themselves at the live show at Elstree studios rubbing shoulders with the glitterati!

Children in Need raised a record-breaking £32,620,469 on the night with the Round Table family contributing in excess of £100,000.

Elissa Bryan, partnerships assistant for BBC Children in Need said: “On behalf of everyone at BBC Children in Need, I would like to thank each and every Round Table and Ladies Circle member who contributed to another incredible record-breaking year. Once again, we were blown away by the remarkable generosity of the British public which will go a long way to helping young lives across the UK. You should all be incredibly proud of what you have achieved together - we know we could not do it without people like you.’

How to survive the office christmas party

Social MediaThree words: switch. it. off.

After you’ve had a couple, switch the smartphone off. While you might find it hilarious at the time to take a picture of the boss giving a hug to the porcelain god after a few rum punches, it won’t feel as clever the next day.

Similarly, while you might want to tag everyone in your Facebook picture, they may not want to feature. Avoid the faux pas by avoiding it all together.

AlcoholThere is a rumour that some members of Round Table enjoy the odd beverage or two. We are not here to substantiate these claims.

If your company is putting on a free bar then enjoy, within reason. Do not become the “story” of the night by getting so wheel-barrowed that you’re being hauled into a taxi at 10pm.

colleaguesThe office Christmas party is just an extension of the office with added alcohol. So your boss is still your boss, those are still your workmates and you will have to show your face on Monday morning.

Have a great time but respect the boundaries.

Dress codeCheck with a couple of people in the office as to what they are wearing. If it has a dress code, try to stick to it - you don’t want to be “that” person.

Need to tie a bow tie and not sure how? Use this handy YouTube video - it’s been viewed over three million times https://www.you-tube.com/watch?v=VJv4Qh7zR3E
