Rounding Rounding Decimals Decimals
Jack and Jill started walking at the same time. After an hour, Jill walked 0.36 km while while Jack walked 0.32 km.
Who do you think walked the farthest?
Why do you say so?
Let’s compare the distance they have travelled.
Given these numbers, 0.32 and 0.36
Let’s compare them using the number line.
Which of these would mean longer distance travelled?
Study the number line below: If we round 0.32 and 0.36 to the nearest
tenths, which of these decimals is nearer to 0.4? Look at the hundredths digit
0.36 is nearer to 0.4 than 0.32
Jill walked farther than Jack.
0.36 is rounded off as 0.4

When the digit is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 the TENTHS digit remains the same.
When the digit is 5, 6, 7,8 or 9 the TENTHS digit is rounded to the next higher digit.
