ages clipped and torn from magazines serve as the seeds of many a home building project.
Homeowners Frank and Kathy Johnston learned just howdramatically the printed page can impact the design conver-
sation when they decided to build their dream home in RoundTop, Texas.
Early on in the process, designer Christopher Travis assured themclippings from magazines were an integral part of the design process. Alittle paperwork was in order, too, with Travis’ TrueHome approachthat encourages future dwellers to “dream their dream home” with thehelp of an evaluative workbook.
The two professionals—Kathy, retired owner of Johnston & Co., aHouston advertising agency, and Frank, now broker/owner at HeritageTexas Country Properties—entered the process agreeably independentand with their own opinions.
“When we decided to build the house,” explained Kathy, “I thought,
Oh no! This is going to be a horrible experience.” Yet, many magazines and cutouts later, the couple was pleasantly sur-
prised to find they desired similar design features.
GATHERING SPACES
First on the list was an abundance of wide, spacious porches—a musthave to satisfy their love for entertaining. The finished result was 109linear feet or 1090 square feet of GeoTek composite decking made upof 10-foot wide porches, flanking three sides of the home. Add to thatanother 200 square feet of master porch and an 800 square feet multi-level deck that doubled as a dance floor for guests and a five-pieceband, a couple of years back, in celebration of Kathy’s mom’s 90thbirthday.
In the kitchen, black Silestone countertops and an island pair withrich custom cherry cabinetry—an ideal space for someone like Kathywho has a passion for cooking. Triple windows over the farmhouse sink
Country ComfortsABOVE: Porches were an integral design element of Kathy and Frank Johnston's Round Tophome. With more than 1,000 square feet of porch, the couple has plenty of room to admirethe sprawling oaks from their generous wooden rockers. Photo courtesy of Sentient Architecture.
OPPOSITE: The homeowner's use of well-placed windows, transoms and doors, ensures plenty of light and a seamless connection to the outdoors.

open onto a vista of live oaks and cedars that stretch across the 23-acrehomesite. Open views into the den, dining room, bar area and foyerare also accessible to the chef, at a glance.
“Kathy is a grand hostess,” says Travis. “She wanted to be able tomake sure her guests are happy while she’s working in the kitchen. That’s what drove the open floorplan.”
SPECIAL ELEMENTS
Kathy is quick to qualify her plan is not totally open. She likes whatshe calls “segmented” walls or space, where each room retains its ownunique identify.
A good example is the division between the dining room and denprovided by a striking leaded glass transom of peach-colored Italianglass that was original to the couple’s former home in Houston.Matching leaded glass sidelights were also removed prior to the reloca-tion and later, fashionably refitted in the new home as doors for thedining room’s custom corner cabinets.
The subtle change of flooring takes guests from the foyer to the denwhere the vaulted ceiling rises to 21 feet. Three sets of French doorspartner with a multitude of windows to yield a dramatic look. Infusedwith light, the casual floorplan is lively and bright, even on rainy days.
Two guest bedrooms upstairs incorporate interior windows that, inItaly, would have opened onto a brick-paved street. In keeping with theconcept, Kathy and Frank chose Old Chicago Brick for their down-stairs gallery, indicative of the Italian streets they so fondly rememberfrom their travels.
Visiting family and friends enjoy the privacy of the upstairs as well asthe roomy antique and vintage furniture pieces that accommodateextended stays.
NATURAL BEAUTY
Multiple pairs of binoculars are mainstays in the Johnston home, readi-ly accessible for a closer look at the deer and Great Blue Heron thatfrequent the property. Glass artist Diane Tovey from nearby Carminewas commissioned to create a colorful interpretation of the winged visi-tors for the couple’s new master bath.
A 1,400-square-foot addition was added in 2010, which includedthe new master bedroom and bath. The design incorporates views ofthe lake and a rambling oak that begs to come inside. Bronze hardwareand matching sinks from a foundry in Sedona add a rugged contrast tothe natural palette of wood and stone.
“I knew I wanted tone-on-tone, something a bit more organic, more
“The Johnston home is a hybrid style with three major influences that all came from the clients’ past,” explains designer Christopher Travis. “The exterior is influenced by theGerman farmhouses native to the area while the foyer was a conscious attempt to create the experience of the narrow Italian streets they loved from their travels. The Arts and
Crafts elements come from Kathy’s California childhood.”

William Anzalone’s oil on canvas, Blue and Red, hangs above the live-edge mesquite mantle. In 2008, the nationally recognized, well-collected artist chose The Gallery at Round Top, located inthe town’s Bybee Square, for an exclusive exhibit outside Houston. Anzalone has been represented by Houston’s Meredith Long & Company for over 50 years.

calming,” said Kathy. “I always feellike I’m sitting in a tree house inthis room, especially from the tub, which sits where one of the biggestbranches of the tree once did.”
A limestone bridge and recircu-lating rock creek highlight the frontof the home—Jack Finke’s solutionto what was once a rather unsightlynatural wet-weather creek. The for-mer Round Top stonemason, whopassed away in 2010, was well-known for his craftsmanship andcreativity throughout the area, par-ticularly at International FestivalInstitute.
“We had so much fun designingand building this house,” saidKathy. “Maybe we’ll do this again!”
Kathy’s Blue Door Décor Etc. ishoused in a period structure, nestledamong a grouping of specialty designand retail shops in Round Top’s newHenkel Square Market.
The headboard and footboard of the antique spindled bed blend well in one of the home’s “non-square rooms.” Colorful antique quilts are cherished items found during the antique event heldtwice a year in Round Top, Warrenton and neighboring towns. The next show is March 8 through April 8, 2012 with some dealers/exhibitors opening earlier, some later.
The home’s original master bath, now a guest bath, boasts an antique-style tub and lovely stained glass—a collaboration of Kathy and her sister, Jennifer.

Round Top—with its multiple galleries, one-of-a-kind shops and world-class International Festival Institute—has become a popular arts destina-tion with many works incorporated into private homes. Carmine artist Diane Tovey’s stained glass (left) and the leopard wood Forest Floor mirror
(right) were both found at Copper Shade Tree in Henkel Square Market.
The view from the master bath is private and serene. Sedona bronze sinks are fitting accents to the gathering of trees just outside the windows.

When asked if her home is decorated in a particularstyle, our esteemed anonymous collector informedus that antiques are her home décor.A history buff by nature, she reveals that she got interested in collect-ing antiques after her financially minded husband “kept bringinghome articles about how they were a good investment.”
“He was in school at the time, so we bought a roll-top desk,” shesays. “From there I fell in love with old clocks.” Over the years, she has worked in a couple of antique shops andlearned a great deal from the knowledgeable owners.
“The history of things drew me in, as well as the unique character-istics of the objects themselves. And my husband never said ‘stop’.”
Today, her collections include remarkable ice cream and candymolds, as well as early kitchen tools, such as spice grinders, butterpads, pie crimpers and scales. She treasures her odd pieces, such as achicken catcher and a P-shaped tool used to pass messages to railroadengineers from someone on the platform (an example of her desire todocument the ways of the past).
“I truly love the history of things, it became my passion,” she says. She confesses that when she makes travel plans, she seeks out theantiques shops first.

So what are herstrategies whenshe goesantiquing? Here are her tipsfor success:
1. Look forobjects thatappeal to you and reallyfascinate you.
2. Learn the his-tory—start withwhat the dealercan tell you, thenread up on the objects, compare prices. Most dealers will work withyou.
3. Share your knowledge with dealers, so they know you are a seri-ous collector and they will help you find the types of antiques you seek.
4. Learn to zero-in on dealers whose merchandise interests you andbecome a repeat customer.
A final tidbit from our accomplished anonymous collector: “Ifyou’re going to collect a specific style, learn as much as you canabout it. Knowledge is everything.
