By the time they graduate they’ve worked with the most important players in Scotland, the UK and internationally.

Andrew Panton, Associate Head of Performance (Musical Theatre)

It’s a unique experience that doesn’t happen anywhere else in the UK.

Alex Reedijk, Director General of Scottish Opera

You can have talent, but talent doesn’t always equate to a sustainable career. What we do is nurture that creative spark and turn it into an employable commodity.

Adam McIlwaine, Associate Head of Digital Film and Television

Here, students flourish as knowledgeable and confident individuals, and both students and staff are inspired to generate truly innovative work. Everything we do is underpinned by our desire to achieve routes to mastery. Our students enjoy an extraordinary blend of intensive tuition, professional partnerships, performances and the creative space to co-create across the disciplines, if they wish. It’s thanks to this tremendous wealth of influences and opportunities that each emerging artist excels in their chosen discipline – and goes further to realize their own individual artistic voice.

Professor John Wallace CBE, Principal

Until 1 September 2011 the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland was known as the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. We have changed our name to better reflect the breadth of learning that we offer.

Page 4: Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Programme Portfolio

Our heritage and our unique position todayThe Royal Conservatoire of Scotland is at the forefront of the redefinition of creative arts education. We’re visionary. But that’s something we’ve always been. Charles Dickens, our first Chair, speaking at our inaugural soiree in December 1847, praised the boldness of Glasgow in founding such an advanced open model for arts education. Since then we have continued to break new ground and create fresh, relevant models at each age and stage of our history.

Today, we provide specialized vocational education to professional standards across dance, drama, music, screen, and production. Across all these specialisms, we currently have around 800 students from around the world on degree programmes. We have our own degree-awarding powers up to taught Masters and work with two of Scotland’s most prestigious universities in other areas: the University of St Andrew’s validates our PhD degrees; and our BEd Music is delivered in partnership with the University of Glasgow.

Our new curriculumToday’s creative community requires practitioners who are: unique and excellent individual artists; effective collaborators; reflective practitioners; agents for change; entrepreneurs; leaders; engaged with their world.

We believe this needs to be achieved in a new and innovative way. We are uniquely placed in the UK as the only conservatoire to offer dance, drama, music, screen, and production. This means we can provide students with an education that transcends disciplinary boundaries.

The new curriculum that comes into play in Academic Year 2012/13 (initially at undergraduate level), is inspired by the urge to meet the individual needs of students, with performance as a central component of their work.

It is designed to enable graduates to contribute to the world as artists, cultural leaders, and active citizens. It is international in outlook and is professionally informed and relevant to the needs of students, employers, international audiences, and today’s multi-faceted society.

What you’ll get out of studying here

You’ll make all-important connections We are uniquely placed to partner with a wealth of inspiring professionals and artistic companies. Together, we continuously explore new informal and formal ways to work to our mutual benefit. You will benefit from the blend of mentoring and real world experience, working in a professional but supported context.

Organizations we work with include: Scottish Ballet, Scottish Opera, BBC Scotland, the National Theatre of Scotland, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Shakespeare’s Globe, the Royal Shakespeare Company, York Theatre Royal, Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland, New Moves International, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and Classic FM.

The professions are no longer interested in people who can only do one thing. Rather we need graduates who are multi-skilled and able to learn; who can write, contextualize, use new technology and above all be flexible and adaptable in their professional stance. Professor Elizabeth Bradley, formerly Chair of Drama, Tisch School of Arts, New York, member of the International Advisory Committee

You’ll enjoy first class facilitiesWorld-class talent and tuition demand nothing less than first-class facilities: a prerequisite of the conservatoire experience. We believe excellent facilities support excellent performances. That’s why our facilities are amongst the best in Europe. That’s why we have invested £6M in the development of our new premises at Speirs Locks Studios providing students with specialist dance rehearsal space, technical construction workshops, props and wardrobe facilities. We have invested a further £2.5M in refurbishing and improving our Renfrew Street campus with the creation of a digital media suite, developing additional recording studio facilities, refurbishing performance spaces and creating additional teaching and social spaces. All of which ensures our competitive position.

You’ll enjoy exceptional performance opportunitiesPerformance is at the heart of what we do and the range and diversity of opportunities we provide to our students is one of the things which makes us distinctive. We stage around 500 performances in our own venues every year and issue over 40,000 tickets, but our students also regularly appear in professional venues externally. In the last year our musicians have played at the Fruitmarket, Glasgow and been recorded for BBC Radio 3; at the Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms; at the City Halls, Glasgow, home to the BBC SSO, at the Festival Theatre, Edinburgh; at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal, and in numerous other engagements in the UK and internationally. Our drama students have performed at York Theatre Royal; Shakespeare’s Globe; Edinburgh Festival Fringe; the Arches, Glasgow; the Tron, Glasgow and the Traverse, Edinburgh, as well as appearing at an international festival in China.

You’ll have every opportunity to collaborateWe’re the only conservatoire in the UK to offer such a rich range of artistic disciplines - and there are few in the world offering the same breadth. One of the key benefits of this is that we can encourage you to initiate and develop ideas with those from other disciplines. This, in turn,

lends fresh perspective to your own art form and expands its potential. These insights develop interpersonal skills and the ability to lead and innovate.

You’ll be joining a worldwide community of professionalsWhile we are focused on Scotland, our context is the international scene. We prepare you to work anywhere in the world, because contemporary artistic careers have international dimensions. We arrange for numerous professional practitioners, including our International Fellows, to visit regularly and share their skills and experience with you. Our international outlook is also reflected in the diversity of our staff and students, and in our repertoire: there are many collaborative projects with international partners from St Petersburg to Sydney. We’ll also encourage you to work and study abroad.

You’ll be staying in one of the liveliest cities in the worldGlasgow is known the world over for its friendliness, energy, and gritty humour. With 80,000 students, you’ll find a huge choice of bars, clubs, and restaurants to unwind in. All kinds of performance and creativity abound, and it’s the film and TV capital of Scotland. It is often the only UK destination for leading international tours. In 2008 Glasgow was designated a UNESCO creative city: it is the City of Music. In 2014 it will host the Commonwealth Games. And with some of the world’s most beautiful scenery starting on its doorstep, your time here has every chance of being jam packed with some great experiences.

You’ll be taught by leading practitioners not theoristsEvery programme is taught by leading professionals in their field: people with shining track records who are still exploring, still creating. They’re also dedicated educationalists with a commitment to passing on their knowledge. When you’re with them you’ll have their undivided attention. To find out more, please read the programme details that you’re interested in.

It was fantastic to have the exchange of musical ideas performing in both countries. It was a great opportunity and it really opened up our eyes to what’s happening in the trad scene. The focus on our courses is very different but it was fantastic to get a different perspective on how folk are learning and how they approach trad music. I think it’s really important for folk in the US to see that there is progressive trad music happening and to see that it’s not just ‘hokey’ music.Hannah Read, fiddle player and singer at Berklee College of Music, Boston in a Berklee/University of Strathclyde/Royal Conservatoire collaboration.

Thanks to the way [the Royal Conservatoire] is changing and accommodating a whole range of new artistic disciplines, there are young people flocking from all over the world to stand alongside their Scots peers. Alan Cumming, Actor, Director, Writer, Graduate

One of the things I loved, not only about [the Royal Conservatoire] but also about Scotland and, specifically Glasgow, was this human grit that I’ve never found in any other place I’ve ever been – this real sort of existential beauty in very difficult things to look at. I feel Scottish art, and particularly Scottish theatre, revels in a stark gorgeous aesthetic that I think really challenged my boundaries about what I considered to be palatable.Alexandra Silber, Broadway Actress, Graduate
