A very warm welcome to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland's (RCS) summer school programme for 2017. Here, at Scotland’s national conservatoire, there’s something for everyone – from the youngest child with a spark of potential to accomplished adults looking for professional development.

Across our award-winning campus in the heart of Glasgow, musicians, dancers, actors, filmmakers, designers and technicians come from across Scotland and around the world to expand their horizons and develop a wide range of skills. At RCS you will learn and meet people who share the same passion as you for the performing arts.

RCS summer schools are designed by our teachers and arts professionals. From our flagship International Festival Encounters programme, run in partnership with the University of Edinburgh, to modern ballet courses developed by Head of Scottish Ballet Associates, Kerry Livingstone, to jungle fun for young adventurers inspired by the best-selling book Giraffes Can’t Dance, there is something for everyone. Student profiles Hannah and Morgan Charleson

Twins, Hannah and Morgan Charleson, participated in our music summer schools last year and are now in their first year of the Bachelor of Education (Music) degree programme. The twins came into contact with RCS through the Widening Access to the Creative Industries initiative. This initiative is run by the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, on behalf of FOCUS West, and offers tailored support to S5 and S6 pupils.

Hannah said “After being part of the summer schools, we both individually knew that RCS was where we wanted to be, so we applied. I didn’t want to go anywhere else and the whole family was delighted when we both got offered places, especially our mum and dad, they’re really proud.”

The Explorers 3 – 7 Jul £165 / For ages 5 — 7

This summer school is for children interested in music and drama and will take them on an incredible journey of exploration around the world. It will be a fun and educational week consisting of singing, instrument playing and movement. Children will be encouraged to express themselves through performance and story-telling.

The Inventors 10 – 14 Jul£245 / For ages 8 — 11

This summer school is for musicians who would like to perform using instruments in an inventive way, singing and movement (body percussion). It is an opportunity for children to explore and create their very own Junk Yard Orchestra. The children will study a diverse range of musical genres culminating in a lively and varied performance for friends and family.

Popular Music 10 – 14 Jul £245 / For ages 12 — 17

This summer school will provide young people with the opportunity to develop their solo and ensemble skills in a range of popular music genres, culminating in a showcase performance in front of an invited audience. Students will develop their musical technique, knowledge and ability to work with other musicians in a range of styles. Our guest artists in 2017 include band members of Admiral Fallow.

National Youth Wind Ensemble of Scotland

Intermediate Course 17 – 21 Jul £245 / For ages 10 — 15 / Grade 3 - 5

Senior Course 15 – 21 Jul £300 / For ages 12 — 17 / Grade 6 – 8+

On these intensive summer schools you will be coached by a team of expert tutors and performers. You will develop your musicality and ensemble skills as you prepare for a final performance, taking you from Bach to bhangra and film to funk.

Harp 17 – 21 Jul £245 / For ages 12 — 17 / Grade 2+

Directed by acclaimed harpists Sharron Griffiths and Pippa Tunnell, you will spend five days improving your harp playing skills, musicality and technique, as well as gain the opportunity to build up your ensemble performance experience and orchestral repertoire.

Classical Guitar17 - 21 Jul£245 / For ages 12 — 17

Led by renowned Scottish guitarist, Matthew McAllister, with a guest masterclass from our Head of Guitar and Harp, Professor Allan Neave, this summer school will focus on technical and musical development. You will receive one-to-one tuition as well as group ensemble classes, and experience what it's like to study full-time at a conservatoire.

Scottish International Youth Piano Competition

24 - 29 Jul£275 / For ages 12 — 17 / Grade 8+

This summer we are delighted to present the 2nd Scottish International Youth Piano Competition for younger pianists of great potential from around the world. All students attending our piano summer school will have the opportunity to compete for a place in the final on 29 Jul. A distinguished jury, chaired by Associate Head of Keyboard, Professor Fali Pavri, will select the prize winners. The first prize in our senior category will be awarded the Sam Hutchings Memorial Award with the Moray Prize going to the winner of our Junior Category.

Accordion 31 Jul – 4 Aug £245 / For ages 12 — 17

Taught by one of Europe’s finest accordion players, Djordje Gajic, this summer school is designed to help you develop your technical and musical skills whilst experiencing student life at RCS.

Violin and Viola 31 Jul – 4 Aug £245 / For ages 12 — 17

This intensive and inspiring course attracts young musicians from all over the world who want to strengthen their technical, musical and performance skills. This unique course offers one-to-one tuition, technique and performance classes, ensemble coaching, and workshops in instrument maintenance and healthy practice. This course will be led by Andrea Gajic and supported by respected academics from RCS.

Percussion 7 – 11 Aug £245 / For ages 12 — 17

Get hands-on experience with every instrument you can think of including timpani, snare drum, tuned percussion, plus orchestral accessories and lots more. During this high energy summer school, you will be given the opportunity to gain confidence in solo performance practice, prepare for auditions and improve ensemble skills.

Jazz with Professor Tommy Smith and Friends 7 - 11 Aug £245 / For ages 12 — 17

This summer school is led by internationally renowned teachers and performers including RCS Head of Jazz, Professor Tommy Smith. This course aims to inspire young musicians to focus on creativity, performance and composition, whilst offering specific instrumental guidance on the fundamentals of improvisation.

Play On with Guest Artists 7 – 12 Aug £340 / For ages 13+

Experience studying in a conservatoire with Play On, our international summer school for strings, woodwind, and brass players of great potential. Through individual lessons, ensembles, masterclasses and coaching from RCS Head of Strings, Professor David Watkin and internationally regarded guest artists, you will develop your solo, chamber and orchestral playing skills, with the orchestra exploring the challenging Symphony No.2 by Sibelius. On this summer school you will meet young like-minded musicians from around the world and perform in our state-of-the-art concert halls.

Scottish Music17 – 21 Jul £505

This summer school is led by Music Tutor of the Year (2015 ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards), Jenn Butterworth and internationally renowned musician and academic Dr. Lori Watson. This course offers you an opportunity to gain insight into the research, rehearsal and recording processes for contemporary and traditional music-making, and to explore the lively Glasgow music scene.

Chamber Music 24 – 28 Jul £505

Our string chamber music summer school will be led by a host of inspiring teachers. During this week-long course you will have the opportunity to collaborate with musicians taking part in the Piano summer school (see below).

Piano 24 – 28 Jul £505

This summer school is directed by Associate Head of Keyboard, Professor Fali Pavri, and has been attracting students from across the world for many years. On this course you can expect a busy schedule which will include one-to-one lessons, masterclasses with visiting artists, ensemble workshops and a final performance in front of an invited audience.

Composition 14 – 18 Aug £505

Are you an aspiring composer? This summer school will coach you in compositional technique, development and rehearsal skills. Working alongside a resident ensemble, you will experience your work in live performances throughout the week.

Conducting 15 - 16 Aug £205

Led by Garry Walker, RCS Artistic Director in Conducting, this summer school gives participants the opportunity to explore repertoire using a live ensemble and is ideal for those considering a conducting career or field of study.

Classical Singing 21 – 25 Aug£505

One of our most popular summer schools, Classical Singing features an intensive week of classes and coaching in vocal technique, performance skills and repertoire for adult singers, whether you are a student, professional or amateur. This course is particularly popular with those looking to audition for one of our full-time degree programmes.

Teaching Classical Singing 31 Jul – 2 Aug £310

This summer course is led by RCS Head of Vocal Performance, Professor Stephen Robertson, and offers experienced and new singing teachers the opportunity to establish a clear basis for their teaching strategies. You will synthesise your own personal vocal experience with the most up-to-date thinking and research in singing teaching, using a mixture of practical activities and presentations.

Cello Continuo Clinic 4 – 8 Sep £505

This summer school is led by RCS Head of Strings, Professor David Watkin, and guest artist Alison McGillivray. It is the only course of its kind in the world and focuses specifically on the art of accompaniment. The week will involve masterclasses, talks, solo and group performances.

Sitar 4 – 7 Sep £404

This course is delivered by Alec Cooper (Co-Director of theSitarProject), and will offer you the opportunity to learn about North Indian classical music through first-hand experience playing the sitar. Each student is provided with a sitar and will be given an introduction to the basic musical skills and concepts underlining sitar performance.

The songs, poems and text used during the summer school will draw from the work of Robert Burns and other more contemporary writers.

Based on the RCS BA Contemporary Performance Practice degree, this five-day summer school will introduce you to the core disciplines of this cutting-edge, contemporary theatre practice course.

This summer school consists of practical and theoretical teaching in set and costume design and you will be encouraged to develop your own unique designs. Looking at the three stages of design – research, development and presentation – you will explore and learn how design for performing arts is undertaken.

Prosthetics Effects: Stage and Screen 14 Aug – 1 Sep £1,315

This summer school is an excellent opportunity for those wishing to pursue a pathway to further training or explore a career in this field. Over three weeks you will produce your own special-effect prosthetics suitable for use on stage and for screen, and work with both stage and film professionals to explore and experiment with the unique and specific requirements of prosthetics effects.

This unique summer school combines hands-on experience of cutting-edge cinematographytechnology with on location shoots aroundGlasgow and the surrounding countryside.Students will be given practical lessons on filming with RED cameras, drawing inspiration from the scenery of urban and rural Scotland.

An inspiring summer school for exclusive engagement with international arts leaders.

RCS and the University of Edinburgh offers an immersive five-day programme for ambitious producers, programmers, creative artists and performers.

This unique summer school develops artistic entrepreneurial skills in the context of one of the world’s most iconic arts festivals – the Edinburgh International Festival. You will have the opportunity to attend festival events, which have been described as energising and profound from previous participants. Every element of this summer school is tailored towards enabling you to develop the knowledge and skills required to engage with your practice at a higher professional level.

Sir Jonathan Mills Director of the Edinburgh International Festival 2006-2014, Sir Jonathan Mills is also a composer. He has previously been artistic director of music festivals in Sydney, Brisbane

Student supportwith Liberty Living and RCS Students’ Union

Residential accommodation for summer school students travelling within the UK or from overseas is available at Liberty Living. This is

the student accommodation used by full-time students of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

The modern, self-contained flats within Liberty Living are located in the city centre of Glasgow, just ten minutes walk from our campus.

They consist of single en-suite units with communal kitchens and living spaces.

Financial support

Agnes Allan BursaryThis bursary can offer some financial support to anyone, regardless of age,

stage of development or subject areas.

James McAvoy Drama ScholarshipsBAFTA-winning and Golden Globe nominated actor James McAvoy is

a graduate of the BA Acting programme at RCS and has generously funded the James McAvoy Drama Scholarship to enable young people to experience

the world-class drama training at RCS.

Applicants must be 25 years or under, applying solely for drama courses and be a resident in Scotland.

Drama at 60 ScholarshipsThis scholarship is for theatre and screen practitioners who want to

develop their skills with RCS. Deadline for applications is Monday 25 August 2017.
