I feel honoured and privileged to be a part of Royal

Institute International School. A school is a place where

every stakeholder is a learner and every day is an

opportunity to discover.

thRoyal Institute Maharagama Branch celebrated her 13

anniversary this year. More than a decade has passed.

My mind is filled with thousands of unforgettable

memories since I had the chance to be a part of the

school in her early years. In the year 2006, there were

forty students studying with five teachers in three grades.

But today she has grown up to 50 class rooms, providing

education for more than thousand students.

The strongest factor behind the success of our schools is

our Founder Chairman, Mr. G.T. Bandara, who is a

great teacher not only for the students, but also for the

teachers.

Great teachers are the biggest secret behind the success

of a school. Our academic staff fruitfully implement their

strategies to create a positive learning environment for

all our students to achieve their academic targets and

also to inculcate values such as honesty, kindness,

generosity and commitment. I take this opportunity to

express my sincere gratitude to all teachers for their

tireless efforts in moulding our students.

Childhood is a gift we receive only once in a life time.

Students are our most valuable treasure. It is our greatest

duty that we provide our very best to make childhood as

special as it deserves to be.

Our academic excellence is not limited to the

international spectrum. Our results across the national

examinations have also been exceedingly phenomenal

and consistent. We are proud of the students who have

produced excellent results in Cambridge as well as the

National Curriculum.

Our students get the opportunity to enter state

universities in Sri Lanka as well as world renowned

universities in other countries to pursue their higher

studies.

Royal Institute invests not only in developing the

cognitive domain of students, but also in developing

integral personalities in students. Shakespeare's

Dramas staged at the English Day held in 2017 and

2018 exhibited the remarkable talents of young

individuals of Royal Institute Maharagama Branch.

Furthermore, Royal Institute is planning to extend her

service beyond education by organizing social welfare

programmes in order to fulfil social responsibilities as a

pioneer education institution in Sri Lanka.

My dear children, we as your second parents, wish to

show you the correct path to convert your dreams in to

tangible realities. Education is the path to fulfil your

goals and objectives in your life.

I wish you all the best and also would like to conclude my

message with a famous quote on something that all of us

experience in our lives.

“It's all your fault. You need to take responsibility.

You've brought shame on yourself.”

How would you feel if someone accuses you or your

child in this manner? Do you think it's solely his/ her

fault?

Well, if a child who is in his teenage years doesn't get on

with others, has no interest in studies and takes

punishment light heartedly, then one should understand

that there must be something wrong.

As responsible and dutiful parents, what should we do to

ensure a safe and better future for a child?

Kids are very special. We cannot treat them as

machines. In order to help them grow we need to have a

close rapport with them. Spending time with children is

very important. It might be a bit difficult at the start. Yet, a

five-minute talk, playing games with them at least for 15

minutes without forcing them to study would help in

building a close relationship with children. Rather than

keeping the child occupied with the television or mobile

phone, playing games such as Ludo, Snakes & Ladders,

Carrom, Chess, Scrabble etc. can be effective.

Having meals together is also a good way to spend time

with children. The most convenient meal together is

dinner. Usually children, as well as parents are

accustomed to having their meals while watching

television. It's true that we have very little free time, but

for better family ties we need to sacrifice our own

schedules too. Using this time, the members of the family

can talk about their daily routine and it would also be a

good opportunity to know what happens in our children's

lives. Advising them as well as reinforcing positive

behaviour in children's minds is compulsory as a dutiful

parent.

Relating bed time stories is also a positive method if our

kids are still at a younger age. Through stories, children

not only get close to parents, they also get used to the

habit of reading.

Appreciating and acknowledging our children's work is

also important. When kids have younger siblings, they

tend to inculcate jealousy in their minds when they realize

that lesser attention is paid by parents. This leads children

to look elsewhere to gain what they have lost.

A child should always have a close bond with parents and

this bond cannot be taken or forced by parents. It all

depends on the parents' understanding of the child.

Hence, as elders, we may have to sacrifice our time

without expecting them to understand our busy schedules

and problems.

Counselling is an activity that emerged during the

twentieth century and reflects the pressures of

modern life. In the complex, busy and challenging

world, which we live in, there are different types of

experiences that are difficult to cope with. Although we

get on with life most of the time, at times we are held

back in our tracks by an event or situation, which cannot

be sorted out with the resources we already have. We

find ways of dealing with such problems by talking to

family, friends or relatives, but occasionally their advice

alone is insufficient. Worse is when we are too

embarrassed or ashamed to tell them about what

bothers us.

A counsellor is someone who does his or her best to

listen to you and work with you to find the best ways to

understand and resolve your problem during your hard

times. An effective counsellor is all who you may need to

make a real difference. Thus, time spent with the

counsellor is quite precious. You will have the opportunity

to be heard and understood.

The counselling center at Royal Institute Nugegoda

branch is such a place where you can tell your story. You

will be respected and confidentiality will be maintained

throughout. Counselling is readily accessible and

available as a frontline service at Royal Institute

Nugegoda, where you will receive the efficient service of

a professional counsellor.

Good counselling helps you find solutions for problems

and enriches you with new understanding, skills and

strategies, which in turn will strengthen you to handle

similar situations in the future.

Cambridge Advanced Level 2021

It's time to commence the second phase of your life!!!

Royal Institute International School has been laying the

platform to bring out successful individuals for more than

40 years, providing the best education options available.

The students who have completed their Cambridge

Ordinary Level examination, have already completed one

phase in their lives. The second and the most crucial phase

is about to begin. ADVANCED LEVEL is an ideal time for the

students to start building their future plans. They can start

drawing their future in the book of life. Accordingly, they

have to make the right choice.

We are glad to introduce various subject combinations for

Cambridge Advanced Level students in order to provide

access for them to reach different arenas in the society.

Especially subjects such as Global Perspectives and

Research, Psychology and Law are golden gates to meet

the globally connected requirements of the current society.

These combinations belong to Science, Commerce and Art

streams and they are designed in such a way that they cater

towards most of the leading degrees in the field.

Mathematics Olympiad

“Mathematics is a science that requires a great deal of

imagination”

A special workshop was organized for all the Royal Institute

students who took part in the Sri Lankan Mathematics

Olympiad(SLMC) on the 14th of March 2019.

This competition has taken place each year in Sri Lanka

since 1995 for students between grades 6-12. It covers

topics in Number Theory, Algebra, Combinatorics and

Geometry. The highest scorers in the island are then given

the esteem opportunity to represent Sri Lanka in the

Olympiad Mathematics Competition with over 200

countries participating.

This 90 minute workshop was conducted by our very own

teachers. It began with a brief introduction about the

competition and the areas that would be tested. The

students were also given a practice paper which was then

discussed to give them a better understanding of what is

expected. There was also an opportunity given to the

students to discuss easier problem solving methods with

their peers.

The students thoroughly enjoyed this workshop where they

were able to share innovative methods of solving complex

questions.

We would like to thank Ms. Manori Alwis for organizing

this workshop and the teachers Mr. Nuwan and Mr.

Roshan for sharing their knowledge and guiding the

students.

The SLMC is scheduled to be held in September 2019. Our

heartiest wishes and blessings to all the students who will

take part in this competition!

Cambridge Upper Secondary Science Competition

Assessment International Education,

which is the world's largest provider of

international education programs and

qualifications for 5 to 19 year olds,

preparing them for life by helping

them develop an informed curiosity

and a lasting passion for learning, has

designed an exciting new team

competition that opens doors for

Cambridge learners to be real world

s c i e n t i s t s .

The contestants are expected to carry

the understanding of science they

receive in the classroom and apply it

to the real world.

Bravely and enthusiastically, grade 9

Cambridge learners from all branches

of Royal Institute International School

grabbed the opportunity to display

their skills and knowledge and actively

participate in the competition. The first

round was held at the Nugegoda

branch on the 1st of April.

Students in their teams of three to six,

guided by their well proficient and

committed teachers of science,

innovatively produced strikingly new products.

Amongst the products which were presented were floor

scrubbers, laser security alarm systems, liquid surface

tension testers, calcium carbonate level detectors, anti-

acids' neutralising effects, remedial

herbal drinks and vegetat ive

production.

The competition is not only about

science, but also about how well the

competitors work in groups and

communicate their efforts and

outcomes. Each criteria was carefully

and thoroughly assessed by an

independent panel of judges,

accord ing to the prescr ibed

assessment schemes.

The winners will stand the chance to

contest for the Cambridge Upper

Secondary Science Competition

Regional Prize and thereafter for the

Global Prize.

We highly commend and whole

heartedly appreciate the efforts and

skills of our young learners from all our

branch schools and also very specially

the commitment and guidance of Ms.

Ransi, Ms. Nishadi, Ms. Chintha, Mr.

Mahil, Ms. Niroshini, Ms. Nadeeja,

Mr. Namal and Ms. Shazma, the

subject teachers.

Let our young scientists illuminate the

world with the torch of knowledge!

The Sri Lankan Junior Science Olympiad

"The Sri Lankan Junior Science Olympiad" was held on the th6 of April 2019 at island-wide universities. The

examination consists of a Multiple Choice Question Paper

with 50 questions to be answered within an hour. It is

aimed at increasing the passion among school

students for Science and Mathematics. This year's

examination saw around a 1000 applicants island

wide, who sat for the examination. Januda Perera

(Grade 10B of National Curriculum) from Royal

Institute, Nugegoda sat for this examination and he

was able to secure a silver medal and is believed to thbe the 19 from the whole island. The award

ceremony will be held in November this year.

We congratulate Januda for

adorning our Alma Mater with

colours and pride.

Spelling Bee Competition 2019

Royal Institute International Girls' School has organized an

inter-branch Spelling Bee Competition. This competition

consists of three rounds. The first two rounds have already

taken place branch wise. The

winners from each branch will

take part in the final round which

will be held in September 2019.

Cambridge Examinations Invigilator Training 2019

Royal Institute International School held the above

training session for over 80 potential invigilators, at

the Royal Institute of Colombo, recently.

Royal Institute prides herself in earning the unique

Cambridge Examination Centre status and being one of

the very few prestigious schools in Sri Lanka, which

enjoys such status.

It is also remarkable that Royal Institute is THE ONE

AND ONLY school centre in the island, which presents

the highest number of candidates for Cambridge

Checkpoint, Ordinary Level, Advanced Subsidiary Level

and Advanced Level examinations.

Royal Institute has secured the highest grading ever a

school could achieve, at the inspection for maintaining

standards at Cambridge examinations, consecutively

over the past few years.

The program was organized by Ms. Manori Alwis,

Academic Coordinator and Examinations Officer of

Royal Institute, along with Cambridge International

Examinations. The session was conducted by very senior

Cambridge invigilators.

It covered many aspects and related responsibilities of

an invigilator. Interestingly, the training was conducted

in a model examination environment, where the trainees

played the role of both invigilator and candidate, which

in turn benefited them to a great extent.

It is mandatory that any academic willing to take up

invigilating, attends this training program each year.

Preparing children to serve future generations

Charani C. A., nurtured by her Alma Mater,

Royal Institute, won the rare opportunity of

being qualified to enter the University of

Peradeniya in the year 2018.

This outstanding and hard-working student, who

is to become a doctor: one of the noblest

professions, penned her thoughts as follows, to

pay her gratitude to Royal Institute.

As a child, the role of a doctor made me have a high esteem

and passion for the profession. As I reflect on the path that led

to my career, it was bound with many obstacles. These

challenges were surpassed by optimism, commitment and

persistence along with immense support and guidance from

my parents and teachers.

I began my school life at Royal Institute Nugegoda. Until

grade 9, I followed the Cambridge curriculum. By the end of

that year, my parents decided to transfer me to the National

Curriculum. By the time I joined Royal Institute,

Maharagama, it was the beginning of the third term of grade

10. Initially, it was a bit of a challenge for me, since a great

deal of content has been covered.

"Never regard study as a duty, but as an enviable opportunity to learn to know the liberating

influence of beauty in the realm of the spirit for your own personal joy and to the profit of the

community to which your later works belong."

Yet I was very fortunate to have met many

wonderful teachers who greatly supported and

guided me. I attended substitute classes only for

Sinhala language during this period. All the

other subject content was solely learnt at school.

Hence, I was able to pass my G.C.E O/L

examination obtaining 7As 1B and a C. I was

accepted to a prestigious national school to

continue my G.C.E. A/Ls in English medium.

During this period, my mother was diagnosed with cancer.

My mother's battle with cancer strengthened my

determination to become a good doctor.

Despite all prevailing circumstances, I passed my A/L

examination with overwhelming results. I obtained 3As and

a Z score of 2.13, sufficient to get qualified to the medical

faculty of University of Peradeniya.

Achieving this childhood dream would not have been

possible without those pillars of strength and success that

stood by me, my beloved parents and alma mater.

Royal Institute, to me, has been a

place of self-discovery in every

sense of the word. Over the years that

I've spent under this roof, I've observed

that the institution has always garnered what is essential for a

student's enrichment, be it educational or otherwise. It

provided a safe space for me to grow, to explore my abilities

and embrace my strengths. While acknowledging that

knowledge of subject matters is important, Royal Institute

equally believes in holistic education. Thus, not only were we

taught much beyond the text present in our books but also we

were exposed to more sensitive and subtle themes of life and

growth as well, such as building relationships, giving back to

society and learning empathy among other things, which all

lead back to the age-old tale of balancing duties and

responsibilities. If these walls could talk, it would cite a story

of how children, clueless of their inner potentials, were

moulded into refined individuals, only to step into society as

celebrated personalities.

The memories of walking down the school hallways are still

very vivid and fresh. They remain engraved in the back of my

mind. It's no question that some of my most treasured

memories exist within the confines of the school premises.

Oh, what I wouldn't give to relive one last walk down

memory lane.

No matter what people say, school

is the biggest step you ever take

in your life. The moments,

memories and lessons you spend, earn

and learn, decides your whole future

for you. Regardless of what field you go into, the morals, the

values and discipline will be instilled in you through various

activities. This is what I have received from Royal Institute.

To have myself nurtured under the wings of Royal Institute

Maharagama, has been a great privilege. Not only did I

learn the important lessons, but also found my true potentials

and reach my fullest capabilities. The best thing about my

school was that I was given all the opportunities to try out

everything including sports, drama etc.

Some kids nowadays detest going to school, whereas I

always enjoyed going to school because every day was a

lesson altogether for me.

Since I always considered Royal Institute to be my second

home, I decided to pursue my higher studies and I am

currently doing my LLB Degree at RIC. So to all my fellow

students, I would most sincerely advise to cherish every

moment, enjoy the little things and adorn every lesson you

learn from school.

Imashi Gunarathne and Pahandi Mewanma interviewed Doctor Chandima Fernando, an ecologist who has done so much to save endangered species in Sri Lanka. His initiatives like the “Ele-Friendly Bus” have contributed immensely to reduce the human-elephant conflict.

Life Association?

Are you involved in projects other than

elephants?

Are there campaigns as well?

Has she funded any of your projects?

We are working towards reducing the human-

elephant conflicts. We stay in a very remote area

called Wasgamuwa where there are lots of

conflicts between people and elephants.

I've been conducting research to conserve

carnivores. There are about 5 main carnivores in

our country. The leopard is one of them. The

leopard density outside the national park is very

high. We also have programmes in Kalpitiya to

protect the marine life.

Well, they are not campaigns, campaigns -

what we do is real work. For example, the

“Ele-Friendly Bus,” kids from Colombo

donated some money to us. Whatever

service provided by “Ele-Friendly Bus” is

done for free. The famous actress Jacqueline

Fernandez was also involved in this project.

Yes, she funded for this current bus and

Chanuth Jayanitha Perera is an eight-year-old who is

passionate about writing and playing Minecraft. He

attends Royal Institute, Yakkala, Gampaha. He has

already published three workbooks in his book series

called Zikipedia and is currently working on the fourth

book of the series. Moreover, he reads about 12 types of

books per week. They are not only story books, but also

subject related books. His friends call him "smarty-pants"

because he knows all elements of the periodic table

already and one day he hopes to discover two new

elements and add them to the periodic table.

My name is Nadishka Aloysius and I'm a

teacher. I've been teaching for the past 20 years.

I have two kids who love stories. This book is my

third.

Well, the first one was written because of my

eldest son, and the second one, because they

like dinosaurs.

I write as much as I can

when I’m able to. For

example, if I’m writing

a sentence and if I have

got some work to do, I

first finish my work and

then continue to write.

It started as a hobby,

but it has become a little

bit more than that now.

There's a book about a

famous model. It's

called “Desert Flower.”

Actually, I market my books internationally on

Amazon and locally, on social media.

I guess, it's my two kids.

Yes, I have lots of books. The next one is ready to

be published. There is another for teenagers

about the “Ramayanaya”

I'm printing and publishing books. Yes, this is

now my second job.

The teachers of Upper Nursery A and B

of Gampaha branch conducted a “Plant

a Tree” campaign. The nursery students

planted, watered and learnt the

importance of trees. It was a memorable

day for all who were present at this

beautiful occasion.

So far, I've been randomly naming

them.

I just write everything that comes into my mind.

Unlike earlier, now I have time to finish a book

within a couple of months without taking years.

Sometimes, when you write a book for years,

you don’t remember what you wrote. So I have to

make sure there aren't any mistakes and also at

times, I don’t write enough conversations and my

book ends too quickly, so I go back and see

whether everything that should

be conveyed is there and

change some aspects such as

long descriptions.

I like fiction stories by Agatha

Christie. And I have just

finished reading the book

series 'Games of Thrones'.

I read a lot of Enid Blyton

books. When I was 11, I read

Classics.

Sleep! I wrote many chapters of books till mid

night sometimes.

In Sri Lanka, publication of books is difficult.

Furthermore, there are so many people who

write, but not share their books. If you like to

write, you need to show your piece of work to

your friends, family and people around you and

get comments from them. That should be the

beginning.

Vesak Celebrations

Royal Institute branch schools were lit with bright, colourful

lanterns that illuminated the premises and added beauty to

the surroundings in order to celebrate the Vesak Festival.

The students, teachers and parents of the RI family got together

and decorated the branch schools with unity, joy and love to

celebrate this special day.

EVENTS

Sinhala and Tamil New Year

The Sinhalese and Tamil New Year, better known as

'Aluth Avurudda', begins when the sun shifts from the

house of Pisces to the house of Aries. It also marks the

end of the harvest season and of spring.

Being in line with both tradition and culture, all Royal

Institute branches celebrated Avurudu in grand style

with traditional games, food, music and dance, before

the schools closed for the term. The students at all our

branches had immense fun taking part in the 'Avurudu

Uthsawaya' with their friends of all nationalities.

All our students were decked in colourful, traditional

attire and enjoyed taking part in Avurudu games such as

Tug of war, placing the eye on the elephant, the lime and

spoon race, 'banis kaema', to name a few.

The highlight of the Avurudu Uthsawaya was choosing

the Avurudu Kumaraya and Avurudu Kumari, which

again is a traditional beauty pageant where beauty is

judged by looking for the five markers of beauty known

as the 'Panchakalyana'.

We would like to extend our heartiest thanks to our

Chairman, Mr. G.T. Bandara and Director of Academic

Affairs, Dr. Nirodha Bandara, for attending all our

Avurudu events as Chief Guests, and to all the

Principals, Vice Principals and teachers for their efforts

in making these events an immense success.

Poson Poya Day is very significant to Sri Lankan

Buddhists as it is the day on which Arahath Mahinda rdThero brought Buddhism to the island in the 3 century

B.C. Going along with the rituals and traditions there

were special school centered programmes at all the

branch schools to celebrate Poson Poya.

Religious observances were held to mark the

signif icance of

Poson Poya and to

pay homage to

L o r d B u d d h a .

Dhamma sermons

were preached

and the students

observed Sil.

As it is a festival of

piety and sanctity

all branch schools

were decorated

w i t h beau t i f u l

lanterns, Buddhist

flags and other

decorations.

The inauguration ceremony of the new Advanced

Level batch of Royal Institute Maharagama was thsuccessfully held on the 30 of May 2019.

RI Havelock Town Volunteers join the Indira Cancer Trust

The Indira Cancer Trust is a voluntary organization founded in

memory of Mrs. Indira Jayasuriya Dicker who passed away

after a brave battle with cancer, leaving behind her husband and

two young children.

The Trust, founded in 2016, currently carries out many projects to

upgrade the living conditions of cancer patients and their

families.

7 teachers and 5 students from the Havelock Town branch

attended the volunteer orientation program which was held on ndSaturday the 22 June, in Maharagama.

The teachers and students were

briefed on the projects that would

be carried out in the near future.

They are now committed and look

forward to joining these projects

in order to help the cancer

patients in need, understanding

that we too have a responsibility

towards the betterment of their

lives.

STUDY BUILD -WE CREATE YOUR FUTURE-

The goal of the outdoor classroom is simple: to enhance

the quality and benefits of outdoor experience for

students. A fundamental principle of the outdoor

classroom is children's right to initiate their own activities.

Students need to explore, imagine and try new things. As

responsible individuals in the field of education, our aim is

to create a better future for our children.

The project STUDY BUILD, organised by the Welfare

Society of Royal Institute Maharagama is one of the key

community service projects. Our society is a dedicated

group determined to make the society a better place. The

collective effort of the members of our society, together

with the support of our management provides optimum

solutions for the problems that occur in underprivileged

schools.

The main objective of our society is to provide an outdoor

classroom for the students of W/P/HO/Sangarama

Madduma Bandara Kanishta Vidyalaya, Siddamulla,

Piliyandala.

In order to cover the budget of the project, we organised a

movie show for the students of our branch; separate

sessions were held for the students of the Primary Section

and Upper Section.

At the end of our project we are hoping to donate used

books which are in good condition to the library. As this

school is a developing school, the library is in need of

English books which are suitable for primary students. The

students of the primary section can contribute to this

programme by donating books that would be useful for

these children.

15Miraculous Easter!When Easter Sunday is around the corner and you start

to hear the chatter and see the pretty posters and posts

and statuses about the gist of Easter you begin to

wonder “What exactly is Easter?” “Is it just another

holiday?” “Are there presents involved?”

Well, Easter can mean many different things to each

one of us. To some, Easter is about The Easter Bunny

and the treasure hunts to find the magical chocolate

eggs, which this mystical creature has hidden around

the house. This Easter tradition means a great deal to

little children and if we are being completely honest,

even teenagers love the Easter treasure hunts and the

baskets full of chocolate eggs.

However, to many others Easter has a more powerful

meaning. It is said to signify the great epiphany that

through Jesus Christ there is eternal life. This comes with

the story about death and resurrection; On Good

Friday, Jesus Christ was crucified and on the third day,

He rose from the dead and silenced all doubt that

dwelled in the minds of countless individuals, leaving

behind the undeniable truth that He truly is the son of

God and the promise of eternal life to all those who

believe in him.

As miraculous as that alone is, there are also others who

celebrate Easter for another beautiful reason. One

which signifies the end of winter and the coming of

spring and with this, the coming of life; the renewal of

leaves, plants and trees and the birth of animals of all

species.

Whether we celebrate Easter in different ways or in

every way possible, it means a great deal to some

individuals and to others its importance remains

unknown. Yet, no matter where your heart lies or what

tradition you know best, it is undoubtable that Easter is a

reminder of the beauty of joy, love, religion, tradition

and the most salient... celebration of life.
