Successful Remuera Squash Open

The Remuera Open, the last of the major open events at the club for 2012 was again very successful. The 3 day event received over 180 entries, 30 of whom had to be balloted out.

Jaclyn's Good Form Continues

Page 2: RRC Newsletter 222

Jaclyn Hawkes (left) eliminated the 7th seed Casey Brown from Australia in the first round of the recent

British Open, one of the biggest events on the international circuit. This is the 3rd top 10 player she has had victories over this year. In the 2nd round she went

down to the 10th seed.

Lauren's Day out with the Stars

Who is the face in the middle of NZ Squash's top players Jaclyn Hawkes and Joelle King? Lauren Vodanovich, daughter of Phil, Squash Auckland GM looks proud to be with the NZs best during a a promotion for a further

bid for squash in the 2020 Olympic Games. When it comes to looks Lauren looks equal to the stars.

Cousins Shield Team Named

The Cousins Shield Team is off to Wellington this Friday for the annual National Club Championships. Twelve teams are taking part and Remuera is seeded 3rd year behind current

titleholders Herne Bay and Henderson.

The team is:

Alex Grayson, Graeme Wilson, Michael Sunderland (Capt), Lui Syder, Richard Notter, Justin Sayes and promising junior Harry Tapsell.

There is no Mitchell Cup Team this year.

Troy is the envy of many right now especially me! He is currently at the French Open coaching doubles friend Frank Mosen and then they then move onto Wimbledon! Above he is seen at the

Cannes Festival in France with Frank (middle) and one of Frank's doubles partners. During Troy's absence Michael Bartlett and Nick Burnie are 'holding the fort.'

Out and About With the Camera

Below: Derek Shelton and Martin Allbury played in the Masters section last weekend. They both enjoyed some

great squash.

Derek who is the CFO of Hancocks Wine & Spirits has been very supportive of Remuera Rackets Squash this year having donated prizes for all three Senior Events.

Above: George Allbury has been a steady influence on many of the young helpers I have at squash events this

year. Here he shows Sam Dennis how to input tournament results into the draw system and the

Squash NZ Grading List.

Phil's Support Crew!

Drawcards at a tournament don't necessarily have to be the nationally ranked players. Phil Wallace had his

band of supporters (see below) for all his matches and they more than than got their money's worth. Phil was

seeded 2 in the Mens Div 2 and went down fighting in a great final to a much younger and fitter No.1 seed

Miguel Yam from Belmont Park.

Tony Shows the Juniors - He's Still Got What It Takes!

40+ is considered old when you are a teenager! So when Tony Dye, one of the 'team' assisting on tournament

control at last weekend's Remuera Open became aware of the comments (all made in fun of course) of our older juniors he immediately set up a challenge. There were no squash courts available so they settled for an arm

wrestling competition! It was short and sweet! One by one, our Mr Versatile Tony quietly gave the youngsters a lesson! The pictures say it all!

First up was Ben Wickins ..... ..... that was easy! Rajat Wagh was next in line and

gave a bit more resistance....

The youngest and probably biggest critic Sam Dennis

was convinced he could do better ...... ... but no, over within seconds!

Page 6: RRC Newsletter 222

.....Last was the 'Team Leader' George Allbury .... .... Tony was extended here but got the better of

George within 30 seconds!

The moral of the story is - Don't mess with, or underestimate the power of the Masters!

There's no stopping Dave and Ron: - Above: Dave Haddrell and Ron Robinson have

been members of Remuera Rackets since the 1970s. Almost every week day, rain, hail or snow the pair are out pounding the roads. They admit that these days the jogging is sometimes walking

but nevertheless they are still 'out there'. The above pic was taken on a day when the weather was lousy and the majority of us would've called it quits.

Good on your guys. You are an inspiration to the younger generation.
