The Northern Cape is the largest province of South Africa with a landmass of 362 591 km2 covering approximately a third of South Africa. The Province consists of five district municipalities namely; Frances Baard, Pixley Ka-Seme; Z F Mgcawu (previously known as Siyanda); Namakwa and John Taolo Gaetsewe.

Being the largest province the Northern Cape however, has the smallest population of 1 145 861 people with a population density of 3 persons per square km (2011). This comprises 2.2% of the national population which stands at 51 770560 people.

The intention of the BRICS EXPO is to improve trade, investment and the exchange of technology between the respective countries. This is required to enhance these countries human capital needs (intellectual property, research, innovation, technology, education and training), infrastructure and industrialization to make them more competitive.

There are extensive mineral resources being exported to India and China to be processed. One would like to see some of these processes being conducted on South African soil i.e. diamond cutting and polishing, metal processing, etc.As the Northern Cape, we would like to have more of the value chains localized, with specific reference to our mineral processing, manufacturing and agricultural production.

Taking into account the extensive iron ore, manganese, lead, zinc, diamond, lime and granite deposits found in the province, key BRICS countries are already doing business in the Northern Cape and SADC countries. These companies include Vedanta, Tata, Arcelor-Mittal and several Chinese companies. The Provincial priority is to extend on these mining activities by having localised sintering and smelting, thereby complementing the extensive Indian and Chinese manufacturing value chains. Potential synergies with Russia exist in terms of diamond resources and the energy sector.

Our province offers you exciting investment opportunities in the mining, agricultural, tourism, eco-tourism and manufacturing sectors.

The Northern Cape is the gateway to Africa and would allow your investments and companies to make a distinct mark in unchartered terrain ahead of anticipated high volumes of trade in the continent. We have no doubt that, indeed together as a winning team, we will take advantage of the great promise that the Northern Cape holds for all its people.

FOREWORD FROM THE PREMIER

THE SIXTH ANNUAL ASIA + G.C.C. TRADE,

TOURISM, INVESTMENT &ISLAMIC CULTURE

EXPO 2010

Businessman and entrepreneur Zane Dawood is the chairman of Sultan Zane Construction (SZC) and BRICS EXPO (PTY) LTD.

Through his various projects, including the Asia and Middle East expos, he has been instrumental in attracting investment upward of R1 billion into South Africa. Very little can stand in the way of this self-starter. When he had to drop out of university due to financial constraints, he immediately entered the corporate world in Joburg and started making his mark. He completed his studies in the United States and returned to play his part in building the new South Africa through SZC.

This 100% black economic empowered (BEE) compliant company was started 18 months ago and initially focused on constructing religious buildings and projects for Middle Eastern embassies and high commissions in South Africa.

The company is currently the sole contractor for the King Fahd Religious Centre in Houghton in the Nelson Mandela Precinct. The R50 million contract is wholly funded by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and will include a conference hall where people of all faiths and denominations will be welcome. The conference hall will also host lectures by distinguished scholars.

The centre is unique because it will be one of the largest buildings of its kind on the African continent, and it is built on one of the busiest arterial routes in

South Africa. What does the position of chairman entail at SZC?I’m involved in the negotiations of contracts with countries in the Middle East and Asia and liaising with our Saudi Arabian partners. I’m also responsible for the overall progress of the construction process. Currently the King Fahd Religious Centre is taking up most of my time. I have to take a "helicopter view" of the project but am involved on a daily basis. I have regular meetings with the engineers and site foremen and have to keep abreast of the progress on all the various aspects of the project.

This project seems to occupy a special place in your heart...Yes. I am hoping to use the King Fahd Centre to showcase the quality of our work and ability to construct buildings with unique architectural designs. We will use the centre as a springboard to engage with other stakeholders in the industry to maximise our potential so that we can continue to make major contributions to our country.

What challenges do you face in the construction industry? It is a very competitive industry in South Africa, especially for projects in the R100 million plus bracket.

Has PBF membership held any benefits for your company? The PBF is a wonderful platform to forge relationships with senior members of our party. We also engage with fellow members and attend seminars. We hope to take the opportunity to join fellow members, senior leaders and ministers when they travel overseas on trade and investment missions. The PBF is also very pro-active and provides a tremendous platform for emerging entrepreneurs to network.

Construction worldwide has been badly affected by the economic downturn. How has SZC dealt with the tough times? It has been a very difficult period. We re-negotiated terms with our suppliers and created an awareness campaign for our 200 staff members to look at cost-cutting measures in their various positions and departments.

What motivates you?I am motivated by great leaders such asthe Prophet Mohammed as well as world leaders such as former president Nelson Mandela, United States president Barack Obama and current President Jacob Zuma. I have tremen-dous respect for the American president as well as for our own who, desp i te t ry ing c i rcumstances, overcame all odds to lead our country and stabilise our economy.

How do you relax?By taking trips in my 4x4 alI-terrain vehicle, driving my sports cars, spending time with my family, by reading biographies and taking long walks. I live in Joburg, so I also relax when I visit my condo in Cape Town and spend time on the beach and visiting the other beautiful sites in the Mother City.

What is the best business lesson you have ever learnt?Do not become despondent when you are down or your idea has been rejected. Pick yourself up, and do it again. When one door closes, another one will open.

What are your future plans for the business?I would like to build up SZC to become the leader in the construction market for Middle Eastern countries based in South Africa - in particular Saudi Arabia,Kuwait, Qatar; Oman and the United Arab Emirates. In addition, I would like SZC to build orphanages to continue the company’s involvement in the wellbeing of the country and that of humankind.

What words of wisdom do you have for other business leaders?A quote from Muhammad Ali: “If your mind can conceive it and your heart can believe it, then you can achieve it.”

And for those hoping to enter the construction industry?Study your market, do a risk analysis and try your best.

Are you excited about the FIFA World Cup coming our way?I am very proud of our country. South Africa will be known and spoken about from Paris to Phuket, Los Angeles to Laos and Damascus to Djibouti. I think the tournament wi l l c reate a tremendous impetus for foreign investment and tourism in South Africa. South Africa will do Africa proud, and I am especially delighted for former president Mandela, Uncle Kathy Kathrada and all our stalwarts who sacrificed so much for our country.

The Northern Cape Province is the largest province in South Africa and offers investment opportunities in various thriving industries, including mining and mineral processing, agriculture and agro-processing, fishing and mariculture, manufacturing and value-added processing.

It is located in the western part of South Africa and borders in the north-west with Namibia. It consists of five district municipalities and 26 local municipalities. The geo-graphical area of the province is 362 591.41square kilometres, covering just over 30% of South Africa.

Provincial growth and development strategyThe provincial growth and development strategy focusing on the following key economic sectors to realise the socio-economic priorities of the province: • Agriculture and agri-processing• Fishing and mariculture• Mining and mineral beneficiation• Manufacturing• Tourism• Knowledge economy• Energy

Economic potential and investment profileThe competitive and comparative advantages of the Northern Cape e can be summarise as follows:

• Mineral resources • Climate and air quality• Open spaces• Astronomy• Coastline

Mining and mineral beneficiationThe vibrant mining and agricultural industries in the Northern Cape are the dominant economic contributors with the mining sector responsible for 26,1% of the provincial GDP, while the agricultural sector remains the biggest employer and generates 7,4% of the GDP for the Northern Cape.

The vast mineral wealth of the Northern Cape continues to create extensive development and mineral beneficiation opportunities with major mining expansion on the cards for the John Taolo Gaetsewe district. In the previous financial year, the province allocated R26-million to the development of the Kimberley Diamond and Jewellery Hub. Kimberley remains the diamond capital of the country with 95% of diamond production passing through the city and almost all of South African alluvial diamond mining activities take place within a 200km radius of the City of Diamonds.

The Northern Cape province is the gateway to huge mineral resources, the most well-known being diamonds. The province produces some of the best quality alluvial and marine diamonds in the world.

7

The Sishen mine in the Northern Cape is the biggest source of iron ore in South Africa and contains 84% of ore reserves.

More than 25% of the world's manganese is supplied by the Northern Cape, and South Africa contains 80% of the world's manganese reserves, most of which are concentrated in the Northern Cape.

All South Africa's reserves of tiger's eye and sugilite are concentrated in the Northern Cape.

INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES

• Manufacturing and processing of raw materials such as lead, iron, manganese, copper diamonds, gemstones,

iron ore and granite.

• Beneficiation of precious and semi-precious stones and minerals for diamonds, Tiger's Eye, sugilite, topaz,

rose quartz, jasper, chrysoberyl, amethysts, agate, amazonite and picture stones.

• Diamond cutting and polishing as well as jewellery manufacturing.

AGRICULTURE AND AGRO-PROCESSINGAgriculture is the second most important economic activity in the Province. The Northern Cape is generally drier than the rest of South Africa, but has fertile soil, several rivers and produces some of the country's finest quality agricultural projects. The arid conditions have benefits for livestock producers in that the nutritional value of the veldt remains relatively high throughout the year. Two of the biggest rivers in South Africa, namely the Orange and the Vaal, run through the Northern Cape and forms the backbone of approximately 140 000 hectares of irrigation in the province. The Northern Cape is a major exporter of table grapes, fruit and meat, and is responsible for much of South Africa's sheep and goat farming. Most crop farming takes place along the fertile banks of the Orange River or in the intensely irrigated Vaalharts region in the north-east.

The vibrant agricultural and agro-processing industries also offer viable development scenarios in the food processing sector, irrigation development, crops and product range expansion for export and niche markets. The fishing and mariculture industries also present an ideal environment for growth and investment as the west coast of the Northern Cape Province offers favourable biological conditions, excellent shore-based infrastructure and a strong research and development base for potential ventures.

TOURISMTourism is one of the most important economic contributors to the provincial GDP of the Northern Cape Province. The Northern Cape provincial government has identified the vibrant tourism sector as one of huge potential growth and has implemented strategies to expand their domestic and international markets as well as increasingly appealing to the adventure sports travellers and eco-tourists.

The province has repositioned itself as the mecca for extreme and adventure sports and has rolled out an extensive marketing campaign under the brand pillars of Extreme Culture, Extreme Adventure and Extreme Nature. These brand pillars highlight the unique offerings of the Northern Cape that would appeal to a broad range of potential tourists.

The essence of South Africa's largest province is captured by its people, its rich cultural diversity and important historical assets. The Northern Cape proudly celebrates the unique cultures that build the landscape of this vast province.

The various provincial parks offer amazing investment opportunities for potential investors as the Northern Cape provincial government is actively pursuing public-private partnerships to develop the full tourism potential of the region. Opportunities include resort development at Vanderkloof Dam, Rolfontein private reserve and Goegap Nature Reserve. The development potential at these sites would be a joint venture with the provincial government as the reserves are government assets. Pre-feasibility studies have already been completed and prospective developments include holiday resorts, accommodation facilities, restaurants and conference centres, which will significantly increase the province's tourism product offerings.

INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES

• Further development at Vanderkloof Dam Nature Reserves, including Rolfontein, Doringkloof as well as

Namaqualand Provincial Nature Reserve and Wildebeeskuil Rock Art Centre

• Tourism development opportunities at seven potential tourism clusters centred around culture, space, oasis,

diamonds, outdoor adventures, rivers, grapes, the Atlantic ocean and wild flowers

RENEWABLE ENERGYIn line with the national government's priority to a green economy, renewable energy presents numerous exciting investment prospects. The province is actively exploring alternative sources of energy, specifically centred around solar, wind and nuclear sources. Plans are already underway to build a massive solar park capable of generating8% of the country's electricity needs near Upington. A pre-feasibility study has found that South Africa has one of the best solar resources on the planet and this solar park could change the region's economic landscape from reliance on agriculture and mining to include other sectors such as renewable energy and the manufacturing of solar-related components. It is already estimated that this initiative could generate up to 800 permanent jobs and 3000 temporary construction jobs, which could positively counteract unemployment in the province.
