Setting: This play takes place on a large pond.

Narrator 1: Once upon a time, a Mother Duck sat on her eggs. She waited and waited.

Mother Duck: I am so tired. I sit and sit. I sit and sit all day. I can’t wait to see my baby ducks.

Narrator 2: One day, the eggs opened.

Duckling 1: Hi, Mama.

Duckling 2: Hello, Mommy.

Duckling 3: Hi, Mom.

Mother Duck: You are here! I am happy to see you. You are all so nice to look at.

Narrator 1: Mother Duck liked her baby ducks.

Mother Duck: One more egg has to open. Then all my babies will be here.

Narrator 2: Soon Mother Duck heard a crack.

Ugly Duckling: I am here!

Duckling 1: Who are you? You do not look like us.

Duckling 2: You do not look like us at all.

Duckling 3: They’re right. You don’t.

Mother Duck: Stop. Be nice to your sister.

Duckling 1, Duckling 2, Duckling 3: HA. HA. HA. You do not look like us. We are pretty. You are an ugly duckling.

Ugly Duckling: I can’t stay here. I will run away.

Narrator 1: So, the ugly duckling ran and ran. She met Mama Goose.

Mama Goose: Stop. Where are you going?

Ugly Duckling: I am leaving. No one wants to play with me.

Mama Goose: You are too small to be on your own. You can stay with my family. I will take good care of you. You can play with my baby geese.

Ugly Duckling: Thank you.

Narrator 2: Mama Goose took good care of her. But she was still not happy. No one wanted to play with her.

Mama Goose: What is wrong? You look so sad.

Ugly Duckling: I wish someone would play with me.

Narrator 1: The ugly duckling stayed by herself. She did not play with the geese.

Narrator 2: She did not play with the ducks. She swam and swam.

Ugly Duckling: The water is nice.

Narrator 2: One day, she looked at the water. She saw a swan.

Narrator 1: The ugly duckling swam. The swan swam. The ugly duckling stopped. She put her face near the water. The swan stopped. She put her face near the water. The ugly duckling shouted.

Ugly Duckling: That pretty swan is me. I am not a duck. I am not a goose. I am a swan.

Narrator 2: Then she saw a few swans. They swam to her.

Ugly Duckling: I found you!
