Tailored SMS-Based Intervention for People Living with HIV: Proof-of-Concept
The Continued HIV Epidemic in the United States
• 56,300 people infected with HIV in 2006
• Anti-retroviral therapy has changed the course of the epidemic for infected individuals
• An estimated 1 million people are currently living with HIV
Cell Phones and SMS

• Of 53 health intervention studies that evaluated the use of SMS interventions, only 9 were conducted in North America
Tailored Health Communication • SMS messages can be tailored to address
an individual’s needs, interests and concerns • Tailored health messages have been shown
to be more effective than non-tailored messages
• Tailored messages can promote patient-centered care by promoting – Adoption and maintenance of healthier, safer
sexual behaviors – Medication and appointment adherence – Interaction with credible health information
