THE GAME OF LIFE

Dear Son,

I am giving you the ball, son, and naming you the quarterback for your team in the game of life. I am your coach, your Father, your trainer, so I’ll give it to you straight.

There is only one schedule to play. It lasts all your life but consists of only one game. It is a long game with no time out and no substitutions. You play the whole game- All your life.

You’ll have a great backfield. You’re calling the signals, but the three other fellows in the backfield with you have great reputations. They are named Faith, Hope, and Charity.

You’ll work behind a truly powerful line. End to end, it consists of Honesty, Loyalty, Devotion To Duty, Self-Respect, Study, Cleanliness, and Good Behavior.

The Goalposts are the Pearly Gates of Heaven.

God is the Referee and Sole Official. He makes all the rules, and there is no appeal for them.

There is also an important ground rule. It is: “As you would have me do to you, do ye also to them likewise.”

Here is the ball. It is your immortal soul. Hold on to it. Now, son, get in there and let’s see what you can do with it.

-Your Father

WHEN WE MUST GO AGAINST THE CROWD

The Bible says: “Do not follow a multitude to do evil…”(Exodus 23:2). I know that it is easier said than done. After all, there are many reasons to follow the crowd’s dictates. No one likes being unpopular- and yet popularity often requires always agreeing with the majority.

The Bible is full of examples of people who have had to go against thecrowd. There was David who faced a giant when even his own brothers ridiculed him for his faith in God’s protection(1 Samuel 17). There was Micaiah who was the only one out of 401 prophets who had a different message. He was right and the other 400 were wrong. And he did not cave in… even though it meant going against the majority(1 Kings 22). And there was Saul of Tarsus, who left his family’s religion and gave up his position as a man of political power because he was right and they were wrong(Galatians 1&2).

Yes, there are times when we must go against the crowd… we must go against the majority. Why? Because the majority can be wrong. Why? Because the majority can mislead you? Why? Because it was the majority that crucified our Lord! Here is an example: the majority of the people in the United States say that they believe in the Bible. But the sad fact is- most people do not believe in the Bible like Jesus believed in the Bible. Jesus said: “Scripture cannot be broken” (John 10:35).

We do not have the right to pick and choose which New Testament commands we will follow and which we will ignore.

Are you willing to follow the New Testament commands concerning all phases in life? Are you willing to follow God’s instructions concerning the plan of salvation, worship, forgiveness of others, ethics?

Dare to go against the crowd!Larry Fitzgerald
