Phil Blake, who took over the coaching at Manly in mid-season after Tim Lane won a plum job with super-rich Lyon in France, will be in charge of the Marlins again in 2014. They’ve chosen wisely.

Club rugby’s best kept secret for several weeks was that Brian Melrose had joined the coaching staff at West Harbour and his expertise combined with coach Matt Briggs’ enthusiasm set up a string of five straight wins before the loss to Sydney university. To clear the air, Melrose says: “Matt is the coach and I’m working as a consultant. I watch videos, go to matches and advise with skills and defence.” Meanwhile, he will continue in a similar role with the St George Dragons and fit in the odd session with Shore school.

Who can forget the heaving sea of Wallaby gold that was Stadium Australia as John Eales’ men led the British and Irish Lions 29-23 in the dying moments of the deciding Test in 2001? With the Lions having the throw to an attacking lineout, new cap Justin Harrison, jumping at two, said to skipper Eales , “Let’s take a punt. Martin Johnson is the captain and they’ll be looking to throw to him at two. Give me a lift and see if I can pinch the ball.” And that’s exactly what happened.

You knew there are only four survivors from the original eight clubs when district rugby was introduced in 1900 still in first division, didn’t you? And only one still plays in the same colours. Steve Johnson, a walking encyclopedia on club rugby, sends word the original Sydney clubs were Balmain (black and gold), Eastern Suburbs (black, white knickerbockers), Glebe (maroon), Newtown (royal blue, white knickerbockers), North Sydney (green, cardinal and gold), South Sydney (myrtle green and cardinal), university (blue and gold) and Western Suburbs (maroon and white).

David Lolohea, the giant West Harbour prop, tipped the scales at 154kg earlier in the season. Now he is down to 145 and aims to drop to a mere 135 before he is finished.

Don’t you love browsing through old copies of Rugby News? Take when Manly and Parramatta, who clash today at Manly Oval, were opposed at Cumberland Oval in 1973. Coached by Rod Phelps, the Two Blues side included Wallaby hero Ray Price and his brother Mick, brothers Ray and Kevin Elliott and Alan Minett. Coached by Tony Miller, the Manly team included future Test referee Peter Marshall in the centre, future coaches Bernie Bergelin at prop and Brian Beer at flanker and Rex Mossop’s son Kirk in the second-row.

Did you know that Rob Oakeshott, who has been busy in Canberra for a couple of years, once played rugby for Port Macquarie? What’s more he was an outstanding cricketer in his days at Barker College.

They’ve done it again. Look at the mix for Sydney university’s annual Trivett lunch at the Westin hotel on August 23, the day before the All Black Test. With the hilarious Sam Kekovich in charge of proceedings, the speakers will be AFL chief Andrew Demetriou, ARu Chairman Michael Hawker and Waratah coach Michael Cheika. unmissable.

Sydney university haven’t given up hope of Israel Folau, toast of the rugby world after his spectacular two-try debut for the Wallabies against the British and Irish Lions, being able to squeeze in a game or two later in the season. And word is that he’ll stick with rugby for at least another season. Still on Izzy, did you know he is Australia’s 47th dual international?

The older the violin, the sweeter the music. Great to have the maestro Gordon Bray back in the TV commentary box on Ten with his expertise, passion for the game and tantalising trivia titbits.

Not too many would be aware that Australia’s representatives on the International Rugby Board’s rugby committee are Michael Hawker and Cheryl Soon, once captain of the Wallaroos.

Q: Nick, you had an illustrious playing career and captained Australia to victory in the 1991 World Cup at Twickenham. Can we assume that 12-6 victory over England in the final was the ultimate highlight, or is there another that remains just as vivid?A: There’s no doubt that’s going to be chiseled on my rugby tombstone. Results simply don’t get any better than that. But the way we won that final wasn’t the way I’d like to be remembered. There were other matches I was involved in where we played so much better, against New zealand, against France and in that first Test against the Lions in Sydney in 1989 (which Australia won 30-12 under Farr-Jones’ captaincy).

Q: Before moving from your playing career, Rugby News was very interested in your response at a recent luncheon when asked who you thought the best Australian player of your era. Would you tell us who it was?A: That was very difficult to answer, but for the continued impact he had on every game he played, then I nominate our Wallaby centre Tim Horan…though I must say a few others are not all that far behind him.

Q: What about opposing players. Who was the best?A: As far as the continuing influence he had on every game, then I’d have to say the All Blacks flanker Michael Jones.

Q: There are four children in your family. Are any of them rugby players, or keen on sport?A: We have two girls, Jess, 21, who’s in her fifth year of commerce/law at university and has already been offered employment; and Amy, 19, who’s in her second year of media/communications and looking at getting into TV. Our boys are Ben, 17, and Josh, 13, who are both still at school. Josh really likes his rugby, but does all other sports too, especially swimming and basketball.

Q: How do you personally keep fit?A: I don’t do anything very active, but I’m not out of shape. I must say that I worked my arse off keeping fit as a young kid, but then stopped serious physical exercise when I went to live in France. But fortunately my body shape’s not too bad and I haven’t put on much weight since I stopped playing rugby.

Q: You have had a successful career in law, investment banking and now in global fund management with Taurus; you have lived and worked both here and in Europe; and have assisted with many charities. Can you tell us about your newest charity Touch Life?A: Touch Life was set up in 2008 under the umbrella of Wesley Mission and each year I host a small, boutique luncheon when we manage to attract many worthwhile donations, all of which is directed at helping homeless people.

Q: You are now chairman of the NSWRU Board. Could you explain the board’s overall role & objectives?A: Basically, we manage all community rugby – coaching, country, juniors, referees and suburban rugby and our aim is to make it larger and stronger.

Q: How can we attract larger crowds to Waratahs matches?A: I’d strongly suggest finding new ways to create a greater visibility of the Waratahs for the community rugby landscape. Young people want to have heroes among the Waratahs, so if we can create those heroes for them, then the young people will come along and watch them play.

Q: While the western Sydney region is our largest growth area, it seems rugby is not penetrating there nearly enough, if Penrith’s standing in the club championship is any guide. What can we do about it?A: I must say that rugby is doing really well at community level. But it’s a difficult, ongoing battle. I have been to Penrith to look at the rugby scene out there and have met with Bill Pulver (ARu chief executive) over this matter. But I must say that rugby’s not in great financial shape at the moment. We simply don’t have lots of money to invest. What we really need is lots of people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and help the game out in the western Sydney region. Otherwise, Penrith faces a constant struggle to build a strong rugby club.

“Basically, Folau should not be playing for University…”

Q: Should anything be done by the NSW Rugby Union to direct Waratahs & Wallabies to play for a particular club, rather than having someone like Israel Folau playing for ultra-strong University?

A: Discussions are happening about that at the moment. Basically, Folau should not be playing for university…and that’s a former university player saying that! It’s not to say that university should not assist him in furthering his education if that’s the way he wanted to go.

Q: Do you see the format of the Shute Shield being changed in the near future? If so, how and when?A: The Shute Shield could be restructured in the very near future. There has been a lot of discussion between the NSW Rugby union and club presidents as to what the future holds. I won’t forecast the outcome, but we could well finish up with 10 clubs in the premiership competition.

Q: Do you have any radical ideas as to how rugby can counter the insurgence of AFL and football in this State, which we didn’t have in the past?A: I don’t know that those other codes do enormous damage to us. Despite the impact they may be having, our rugby playing numbers continue to increase. So, we’re not being completely shut out of the football scene.

Q: Finally, what do you see as the major differences between today’s game at the elite level, and the game you played?A: Firstly, we had a day job and then trained after hours, which obviously meant we could not be as intense in our preparation. We also kicked off our matches at 3pm, so we were able to get together afterwards with our teammates and the opposition. But–and you would know this from the Wallaby tours you’ve been on with us – while we weren’t professional, we were still very professional in our approach. We might have been smaller in stature, and slower, but we were just as intense when the referee’s whistle sounded for kickoff as they are now.

Interview with NSWrU Chairman, Nick Farr-Jones, who comments on the 2014 Club Competition(Continued from Page 3)

Restructuring of the Shute Shield competition for 2014 is almost certain. If the number of clubs competing is to be reduced, details of the criteria for inclusion or exclusion will be keenly anticipated.

Adam D’Arcy, the dashing fullback who has played with ulster in Ireland for the last three years, may become available to boost Manly’s premiership push. Back in Sydney after completing his latest two year contract, he is awaiting word on a fresh contract with a uK or European club. In the meantime, he may have a run with his old club, which is sharing fourth spot in the Shute Shield with Eastern Suburbs and West Harbour on 35 points. With seven rounds remaining, Eastwood (46 points) have skipped to a lead of five points over premiers Sydney university, with Southern Districts next with 37.

On sheer weight of Super Rugby players, Sydney university and Eastwood would seem to be favoured for a grand final spot on September 14. That date sounds familiar, doesn’t it? But don’t write off Manly’s chances. Even if they don’t wind up with D’Arcy, they’ll have half a dozen players from the Rebels and skipper Ed Gower will be back from suspension. Forwards win the big ones, and the Marlins will have a VERY large pack. Southern Districts have strong forwards, too, with plenty of zip in the backs and a point-scoring wizard Rohan Saifoloi, who has 136 points in his portfolio following a 20-points haul against Parramatta last Saturday.

RANDWICK v EASTWOODAt Coogee Oval

With Waratah hooker Damien Fitzpatrick finally recovered from injury, Eastwood coach John Manenti has switched Hugh Roach to flanker for this ABC TV clash at Coogee. “Good players need to be playing in first grade to keep their edge,” says Manenti. With Randwick in seventh spot following their 23-5 loss to Manly, coach Wade Kelly thinks they need three or four wins out of seven to make the eight. Explaining their comprehensive loss to Manly, Kelly says: “The guys didn’t adapt to the weather. They don’t like heavy tracks.”

Looking at Randwick’s lively up and comers, Manenti says: “They’re an impressive young team with a nice style of football in which they try to move the ball about.” Changes in the Randwick side are Pat Hodgetts for hooker Nio Halangahu,

who has headed overseas, Tom Connor from the centre back to flanker and Tim Wright returning to the wing.

First round score: Eastwood 34-3

SYDNEY UNIvERSITY v EASTERN SUBURBSAt University Oval

With Waratahs Brendan McKibbin and John ulugia back to boost the Beasties, the stage is set for a ripper of a clash in this Sunday game at university Oval. Premiers Sydney university, laden with Waratahs, will bid for their eighth successive victory when they face a team that tipped them out 13-10 in an earlier round at Woollahra through a last gasp penalty goal from long range by flyhalf Henry Hudson, who already has posted 120 points for the season. For the first 11 rounds of the competition, university have made 66 team changes from week to week, but for this game the premiers have just one. Stuart Dunbar, who took

First round score: Easts 13-10

SOUTHERN DISTRICTS v WARRINGAHAt Forshaw rugby Park

Warringah get a boost from the return of last year’s Catchpole Medal winner Hamish Angus, who has missed the entire season with injury. After a couple of runs in reserve grade, he will play inside-centre in this game against Southern Districts, who caused the eyebrows to shoot up when word of their 60-14 disposal of Parramatta came through. “We could well have got another five tries,” claimed Souths coach Cam Blades. Apart from Jake Douglas replacing second rower Andrew Leota, who has headed overseas, Blades has retained the team that put Parramatta to the sword.

Warringah lack genuine size but are not short of attacking zip, especially from halfback Josh Holmes, who has swept in for nine tries to be equal top try-scorer in the Shute Shield.

First round score: Souths 14-13

Tip: Souths

NORTHERN SUBURBS v PENRITHAt North Sydney Oval

Norths coach Scott Fava thinks four wins from the last seven matches will put the men in red and black into the eight clubs contesting the play-offs, especially as they play Penrith and Gordon in the next two weeks. With only one win in their last seven games, Norths sit in ninth spot a point after Parramatta and four behind seventh placed Randwick. Warringah are a point further back.

“With so many guys going in and out because of injury and Super Rugby calls, the combinations have not been there,” says Fava, who has signed for another year as coach. They are at home to bottom of the table Penrith with their team a far cry from the 21-8 loss to Eastwood due to reshuffles in both backs and forwards. Another newcomer is centre Elih Baillie, who spent the off-season playing in Spain, while props Dan Murray and Karl Truijens get a chance.

First round score: Norths 49-0

Tip: Norths

MANLY v PARRAMATTAAt Manly Oval

“A truckload of injuries,” is the succint summing up of Parramatta coach Glen Christini following the 60-14 loss to Southern Districts. The upshot is a completely recast backline and a couple of front-rowers gone. With Sam Yakopo gone, Tom Woods moves from fullback to fly-half. With Parramatta sharing seventh spot, coach Christini thinks that the Two Blues need to win four of the last seven matches to make the final eight.

Southern Districts hooker & captain Steve Fualau will be planning to win the arm wrestle up front.

Manly winger Jacob Woodhouse and Co. may overrun the revamped Parramatta backline

Manly have stuck with 18 year old schoolboy halfback Fabian Natoli for this home clash with unpredictable Parramatta. “I’ve been watching him play since he was twelve,” said Marlins coach Phil Blake. “He’s a tough, combative individual with a big heart who is built like a little Arnold Schwarzenegger.” A pupil at St Augustine’s College, Fabian has played with the Sea Eagles under 20s as well as Australia A Schools in rugby.First round score: Parramatta 41-17

No panic at West Harbour, w i th coach Mat t Br iggs sticking to the side beaten 41-3 by Sydney university, who scored six tries in the slop. After a check of the v ideo, Br iggs said, “We matched their physicality and learned a lot from it.” Briggs has a big wrap on giant prop David Lolohea, still only 20 and tipped by the coach to play Super Rugby within two years.

Parramatta lead comfortably all match before a late Rebels resurgence in the final ten minutes closed the margin to a tight three point finish at Merrylands RSL Rugby Park.

Parramatta opened their account with an early penalty goal. The boot of Cale Angeloni kept the Two Blues with some favourable field position throughout the opening quarter of the game before tighthead prop Peter Ma’a used his weight to drive over in the corner and score the opening try of the match.

An arm wrestle between the two sides played out until a minute before halftime when Souths crafted a beautiful backline play out of nothing to make it 10-5.

Parramatta rushed out to a 22-5 point lead after the break with tries to fullback Niall Hoolahan and lock Siatua Solease and it soon looked as though Parramatta had this match beyond doubt.

Parramatta received a penalty when they were two tries up, with fifteen minutes left, right in front of the posts but instead decided to pursue the much sought after four try bonus point and opted for a scrum. The calculated and powerful Rebels front row won the scrum against the feed and this proved the catalyst for their late revival.

Two tries in quick succession to the Rebels had seemingly bewildered the Two Blues men when it became a three-point ball game with as many minutes to spare. Souths seemed destined to score the match winner when they made one final line break in the final minute of the match, followed only by Two Blues replacement Hooker Aaron Blacklock.

Blacklock saved the day when he performed the unlikely task of running down an opposition outside back and tackling him into touch just short of the try line. Parramatta won the following lineout on their own throw and drove the ball up field and out of the Rebels hands, closing out a tight and very entertaining Rugby game.

Special mention must go to the whole Parramatta Colts program. The Two Blues enjoyed their first

Colts clean sweep in nine years. This was also the 50th colts cap for blindside flanker Nathan Oliver, who together with backrow partner Evan Tuckwell has forged a very formidable flanker combination for Parramatta this year.

NOrTHS 31 V EASTWOOD 26

Through the guidance of light-footed halfback Matthew Gonzalez, Eastwood accumulated multiple phases of expansive running Rugby throughout the first ten minutes of the match and managed to stay camped in the Norths 22m.

Despite a dazzling array of attacking backline patterns, Eastwood could not find a way through the systematic and bruising Norths defence. The inevitable frustration and sapped energy cost the Woodies, who leaked three tries after their sustained pressure to be down 19-0 at oranges.

Eastwood’s attacking success improved in the second half, with four tries scored including two from Gonzalez. Eastwood went on to win the second half 26-12 but it was too little too late, the three try onslaught achieved by the Shoremen in the first half proving too big of a deficit to overcome.

Eastwood have their work cut out for them this week, facing a hungry Randwick side that will be eager to get back into the winners circle and find the form they were in as competition leaders three weeks ago.

SyDNEy UNI 40 V WEST HArBOUr 30

Wests came into this match after two very narrow losses to Norths and Souths in consecutive weeks. A side of lesser discipline would have crumbled when faced with the prospect of Sydney university after two close losses but West Harbour coach Rayne Simpson is adamant the on field discipline and structure of the predominantly 18 year old Pirates team has laid the success for this season and seasons to come.

Sydney uni came into this game equally as hungry for victory, after having experienced their first loss of the season the week prior after being out enthused by Manly.

Both Wests and uni came out firing with crash tactics early on that were always met by big hits from either side. This softening up with early big hits seemed to lay the platform for tries galore, with 70 points being scored in this match; the flair of uni players Chris Ingate and Finlay McDonald proving the difference.

Wests have Gordon this round, who will be chomping at the bit to get a win on the board again. Sydney uni will face Easts at Woollahra, a side that managed to come within 3 points of them in Round 3.

WArrINGAH 19 V GOrDON 18

The Highlanders dominated the first half at Chatswood Oval, going into the break 18 to nil. Stern words from Shaun Killian at half time spurred the in-form Rats side on, as they began accumulating phases and winning territory off the back of

barnstorming runs by zac Jones and Tim Poynting.

Gordon had one last roll of the dice at full time, with a penalty shot after the bell from 48 metres out to put them ahead. The unlikely kick did not fair well and it became five wins in a row for the men from Narrabeen.

In other matches Easts accounted for Penrith and Manly toppled Randwick.

according to the try-scoring table in this issue of Rugby News, West harbour’s alofa alofa is equal leading try scorer with nine. it’s a shame there’s no way of recording the manner in which the 22-year-old back has accumulated them though, because alofa alofa doesn’t simply score tries, he entertains.

Returning to rugby after a successful stint in league with the Roosters and the Newtown Jets, alofa wasted no time in getting on the scoresheet in his Pirates debut in Round one, scoring a remarkable last minute try against Randwick to level the scores and allow Winston Wilson to kick West harbour to victory.

With a decisive double against Northern Suburbs in Round Nine followed by a miraculous, superman finish in the corner in the Pirates’ come-from-behind win over Southern districts two weeks ago, the New Zealand born, australian raised Samoan back is an integral element in the West harbour line-up but deflects credit for his great form since returning to union to his teammates, coaches and the atmosphere at the Concord-based club.

“We’ve connected really well since our pre-season tour to New Zealand and everyone’s getting along well off the field too,” the humble son of two church ministers says.

“the patterns the coaches are setting for us are really good and the tries just come through the whole team working together and trying to get us outside backs in open space. the forwards are getting us good ball and Jack (debreczeni) at 10 has been great for us too and i’ve got some really good players on the inside as well, so if i see something i’ll go for it and i’m just lucky there’s always been space when i get the ball.”

an able musician, alofa plays guitar and sings in his church band and says there’s always plenty of music around West harbour as well.

“alfred (Pinomi) has got a pretty good voice too, so whenever we have a get together, the guitars always come out,” he laughs.

WILSO’S WHISPERS

The British & Irish Lions side that played against Michael Cheika's NSW Waratah's side recently visited Coogee on the following Monday. The players were in the pool when asked "Do they realise it's winter? " and the reply came back "This is summer for us". They were told that if they wanted to they could use the showers in the Coogee Surf Club after their swim. The team came upstairs about half an hour later, not for the hot shower but for a hot coffee. There were a handful of club members present, including Johnny Mison and John Weber, who were thrilled to have them at the club. This was one morning that Randwick Legends, Terry Reid and Bob Outterside were not present and no doubt they will be disappointed they missed the Lion’s visit. Big Paul O'Connell was very impressed when he found out it was Alan Gaffney's and also Michael Cheika's old club.

Former Australian Wallaby, NSW Waratah’s Captain and current NSWRu President Tim Gavin will be the Guest Speaker at the Mid North Coast Rugby Luncheon at the Tallwoods Golf Club in early August. The Master of Ceremonies will be Mark Cashman who is the Editor of Inside Rugby magaz ine , a Fox Spo r t s News Rugby Commentator and a convening judge for the Inside Rugby Invincibles.Big Gav, one of the true gentleman of Rugby, played for the Eastern Suburbs club and the No.8 for the Wallabies in 47 Test matches between 1988 and 1996. He also played 83 times for NSW between 1988 and 1996 including 30 matches as captain as well as Milan in Italy in the Australian off seasons between 1992 and 1995. Tim missed the 1991 Rugby World Cup victory as he suffered a knee injury just before the tournament but played in the 1995 tournament and the inaugural Tri-Nations Series. Also in attendance, will be NSWRu CEO, Bruce Worboys and local Hastings Valley and Mid North Coast Axeman scrumhalf, Adam McCormack who played for the Combined NSW & Queensland Country team against the British & Irish Lions in

Newcastle earlier this month. Gary Heskett is another bloke who has been

involved in Rugby for a mighty long time, firstly at Randwick and now with the Coffs Harbour Rugby Club. Gary is a former policeman who worked on the Anita Cobby murder with his ‘Wicks teammate, Ian “Speed” Kennedy the former NSW Waratahs and Australian under 21 Coach. He later moved to Coffs Harbour where he became involved with the local rugby as a trainer and continues to put in a lot of time at both the Senior and Junior level where he is highly valued within the Rugby community. However, recently he was involved in a serious car accident in Armidale trying to avoid a kangaroo, suffering broken ribs and fractured collarbone which left him in Armidale Hospital before being transferred back to Coffs Harbour.Gary was awarded a local Community Award last year which was fully deserved and has been a really vital support to Rugby on the Mid North Coast.
