Many oldies reading this may have children wandering around various parts of the globe.

Like your writer, for instance. Our daughter is currently working as a volunteer at an eco-friendly children’s village for vulnerable women and children in the Arusha region of Tanzania in East Africa.

She loves her rugby and, whenever she’s back home, always wants to accompany dad to Shute Shield matches or to watch the Waratahs or Wallabies.

Now, thanks to an online viewing service, many of those with itchy feet like her are able to follow the Waratahs progress. It’s all because of a new initiative from the Super Rugby organizers, SANZAR, which allows those who may be residing or holidaying in countries where there is no television broadcast agreement in place to watch all the Waratahs matches live via the internet.

That’s a fantastic benefit to rugby fans in foreign lands. The Waratahs opening matches have already been watched by fans from Austria and Belgium to Turkey and the United Arab Emirates who have subscribed to this new service just so they can follow their favourite team.

Trialled last year, the service proved so successful that it has now been extended to more than 40 countries, including more in Europe and South America. It is provided by PERFORM, who have one of the largest sports rights portfolios for more than 200 sporting codes and last year delivered nearly three billion video streams to hundreds of millions of sports fans.

Users in the many countries registered below can view the full pricing and packages available in that area online at www.superrugby.livesport.tv. The information we talk about here is territory-specific, which means users visiting the site from geo-blocked territories, including Australia, will not be able to gain

access to this viewing site. In other words, you need to be present in that country to use the site.

The package is currently available in this imposing geographic list: Russia, Georgia, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Turkey, Croatia, Greece, Cyprus, Albania, Kosovo, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, Switzerland, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Iceland, Brazil, Mexico, Panama, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela, Bermuda, Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Bahamas, Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados.

Hey, that’s almost 50 countries and I’m sure there are masses of young Aussies – and even some older ones – wandering, or working, in those parts right now who love their rugby but aren’t getting to see much of it played, because our sport doesn’t exactly devour the masses in places like Norway, currently ranked 93rd in the world, Greece (96) and Finland (100). I can’t even find a few of the other countries among the rankings…or even in my atlas for that matter.

So this new service is certainly going to lots and lots of unchartered rugby nations.

Understandably, it’s not available in SANZAR’s three core territories (Australia, New Zealand and South Africa), or countries with broadcasting rights (Japan, UK, Argentina, the United States, France, Italy, Canada and some parts of Asia).

Checking that list once more, though, there aren’t many African countries where the service is available. In fact, none at all!

Hopefully the service will be extended there shortly. Then again, my daughter will shortly be leaving the Tanzanian children’s village and heading for South America and Cuba, so she’ll be able to see the remaining Waratahs matches somewhere thereabouts on this website, while quaffing a tequila or two and puffing on a massive cigar (I certainly hope not…).

if ever a young man was destined to be a Manly Marlin, it is australian sevens dasher bJ Hartmann. born at Manly hospital, he was pushed down the Corso in a pram and went to school at st paul’s College in Darley Road. His dad paul played first grade for Manly when Wallaby halfback phillip Cox was on representative duty.

and that’s not all. twenty-two year old bJ lives up the road from Queenscliff beach, where he loves to plunge into the cooling waves of the pacific Ocean with his mates. He has a casual job with sea adventure, a surf education company owned by Craig Riddington, the old Manly iron man champion.

after missing most of last season with an ankle injury which turned out to be much worse than first expected, Hartmann, who won a lone australian sevens cap against samoa two years ago in samoa, is back. He is a fullback with flair and hopes one day to win a super Rugby contract. apart from being in the australian sevens squad, he has had a stint in the Waratahs academy and who knows? perhaps a trip to the brazil Olympics for the Rugby sevens could beckon.

bJ? He was christened brendan Joel but thinks his mum was the one who first called him by his initials. He filled in at fly-half when sam lane was injured and says: “playing 10 as well as 15 is a good attribute to have on your resume.”

Growing up, he loved to watch Matthew burke, the Wallaby fullback whom he describes as “phenomenal.” Hartmann adds: “His versatility was awesome. i met him briefly when he came down to Manly for a session with the goal-kickers.” Other favourite players are all blacks israel Dagg and Dan Carter.

footnote: bJ is adamant Manly must have a chance of winning the premiership after two years as a losing semi-finalist. “We have a massive forward pack and zippy, classy backs,” he says.

Tony Abbott, Joe Hockey and Malcolm Turnbull, all of whom have pulled on Sydney University’s blue and gold jumper in various grades, were among the black-tied guests at the club’s 150th anniversary dinner. “Joe preferred to go skiing than turn up at training,” Abbott told the throng, “but he assures me he didn’t stay there as the guest of Eddie Obeid.” There was much talk of the days when the ABC figured in an annual match against the Parliamentarians, who once fielded a front-row of Doug Anthony, Bill Hayden and Ian Sinclair. A punch from one of them is said to have sparked a brawl in one of these games.

It all started forty years ago when a stripling named Gordon Bray took the TV microphone for the first time when the touring French team played Tasmania in Hobart. So we’re delighted by word that he will be back to call the coming Tests against the British Lions. Unchallenged as the best in the business with his mix of effervescence and incisiveness, it’s good to see him back. When we asked Gordon to nominate his most memorable game, the maestro didn’t hesitate. “The 1991 World Cup quarter-final between Australia and Ireland at Lansdowne Road,” he declared. “It was an emotional roller-coaster. Australia was dead and buried when Gordon Hamilton scored a try. I put up my hand for silence, and there wasn’t a word exchanged by myself, Chris Handy or Gary Pearse for thirty one seconds. Thirty one seconds! The euphoria of the crowd was suffocating.” Bray names David Campese as the most exciting player he has seen, declaring: “He was like a firecracker and sadly, more revered overseas than he was in Australia.” Gordon’s most enjoyable tour? “It has to be Alan Jones’ British Isles Grand Slammers of 1984 on which I took my wife Cathy on our honeymoon.”

Talking of David Campese, an injustice has been done by the International Rugby Board. Australians listed in the IRB’s Hall of Fame are John Eales, Dr Roger Vanderfield, Sir Nicholas Shehadie, Nick Farr-Jones, Bob Dwyer and Rod Macqueen. But how about Campo? In case the IRB mandarins have forgotten, he scored a world record 64 Test tries in his 101 appearances in Wallaby gold, most of them electrifying efforts that brought the crowd to its feet. The maestro should be added to the list post haste and what better time than when the British Lions are touring here.

Remember Norm Tasker, once an eminent rugby writer for the old Sun? His son Rob now is rugby producer at Channel Ten.

Attention Golden Oldies: The next World Festival will be held next year from September 21 to 28 at Mar de Plata, a coastal fun spot in Argentina which is famous for its beaches, the size of its steaks and Latin dancing. Brushing up on his tango is Australian Golden Oldies president Allan Forno, who has played in every one since the 1983 event. He will be there with the Eastwood Charcoals.

On Anzac Day 62 years ago, a young man named Bruce Wi l l iamson made h is f i rs t appearance as a first grade linesman and disallowed a try to Eastern Suburbs, the club he still follows with a passion at the age of 85. He recalls, “The referee Harold Tolhurst came across and asked if the player had scored. I had to say no.” Great fellow, Bruce. May he be around for many more years.

Rugby is alive and well. If you thought the Waratahs’ victory over the Chiefs was a cracker, how about the Queensland-Brumbies 19-19 draw the following night? And how about Henry Hudson booting a goal from near halfway after the final bell to give Easts an upset win over premiers Sydney University? With the wind blowing right to left, he aimed just outside the right upright and to his horror, saw it fail to turn until the last second.

If they were healthy, Wallaby Lachie Turner and youthful star Sam Lane would have been opposed in today’s ABC TV match between Eastwood and Manly at Manly Oval. Instead, they have suffered career threatening injuries.

Turner broke his leg playing for the Woodies last Saturday and said after having a pin and a plate inserted in his lower leg that he doesn’t expect to be back this season. Fly-half Lane, who played for the Queensland Reds last season before coming to Sydney in a bid to win a Waratah contract, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee for the third time playing in a club game for Manly the same day.

In this round of the Shute Shield there are three tasty local derbies, starting with Randwick v Eastern Suburbs at Coogee on Anzac Day. The Beasties are coming off a last gasp 13 -10 upset of Sydney University in which they put up a monumental defensive effort against a team that had enough ball and territorial advantage to win two games.

In other clashes of neighbouring clubs, unbeaten competition leaders Northern Suburbs are at home to Gordon and West Harbour tackle another last round winner Parramatta at Concord. Norths and Gordon have long been fierce rivals on and off the field. Who can forget the time when a raiding party from Norths invaded the Gordon club and stole the stag’s head? Gordon retaliated by pinching Australian captain John Thornett’s portrait from Norths headquarters.

Rugby followers could hardly believe it when they got word that Parramatta had walloped previously unbeaten Manly 41-17, prompting one Manly official to describe it as an old-fashioned ambush. Today Manly are at home to Eastwood, who have beaten Sydney University and Randwick after losing in the first round to Southern Districts.

RANDWICK v EASTERN SUBURBSAt Coogee Oval

As a follow up to a 34-3 loss to Eastwood, Randwick coach Wade Kelly has come up with a new look forward pack in which key players

Nio Halangahu and Seilala Lam as well as Lai Vatadroka and Tom Bennett didn’t play against the Woodies. The backs are unchanged. ‘Eastwood were too experienced and clinical for our young team,” says Kelly. Not surprisingly, the only change in the Easts team that toppled Sydney University 13-10 after Henry Hudson booted a mighty goal from near halfway after the bell is the return of powerful No 8 Pauliasi Taumoepeau after injury. “Ít was the determination of our defence,” was the spot-on summing up by Easts coach Mark Bakewell. Andrew Shaw moves to No 7 to make room for big Pauli. With each team having managed one win out of three, Bakewell predicts: “It is going to be very, very tough.” Watch for

MANLY v EASTWOODAt manly Oval

With Phil Blake and his faithful lieutenant Damien (Turtle) Cummins taking over the coaching duties, Manly have made five changes following the 41-17 thrashing by Parramatta. Among them, the Marlins have switched the dashing BJ Hartmann from fullback to fly-half following Sam Lane’s third tear of an anterior cruciate ligament. Dave Porecki and Andrew Collins are new faces in the front-row, Daniel Alley comes into the second-row and Max Wood is the new halfback. Apart from the loss of Wallaby back Lachie Turner with a broken leg, other changes in the Eastwood side are the return of Jed Gillespie at prop and Cameron Mitchell in the centre.

SYDNEY UNIvERSITY v WARRINGAHAt university Oval

“A truckload of changes,” said Sydney University coach Chris Malone. Indeed, he has four players in South Africa with the Waratahs and has been forced to pick some players who aren’t even

household names in their own houses. Josh Ellice-Flint, Tom Boidin, Richard Draper and Tolu Latu, for instance. And the premiers are coming off losses to Eastwood and Easts. They are facing a monumental challenge in this home game against Warringah. The Rats, coming off one-point losses to competition leaders Norths and second placed Southern Districts, top the Shute Shield point-scorers with 101. Only one change at the Rats, with Michael Dalton coming into the centre. Watch for their No 8 Boyd Killingworth to get through a mountain of work.

tip: Warringah

NORTHERN SUBURBS v GORDONAt North Sydney Oval

If statistics count for anything, Gordon will run into a red and black brick wall in this local derby at North Sydney Oval. To date, unbeaten competition leaders Norths have conceded a mere 28 points, testimony to the superbly drilled defence developed by coach Scott Fava. However, Norths are weakened by Sevens, Under 20 commitments and a Rebels reserve game, losing Cruz Ah Nau, Chris Thomson and Sam Figg from the forwards. Nick Lah, who has reached the 200-game mark for the club, is the new prop and Matt White and Tim Fitzgerald are other newcomers in the pack.

tip: Norths

Norths winger Corey Brown had a personal haul of 29 points against Penrith last week.

Not surprisingly, Parramatta have stuck to the side that demolished Manly by 41-17. It was like a re-run of an old movie from the days the Two Blues ambushed visiting sides with their abrasive play. Wests are coming off two wins out of three but know they will have to lift still further. Coach Matt Briggs is happy with the defence, with flanker Cohen Masson in a devastating mood in the 27-17 disposal of Gordon with 24 individual tackles and six pilfers.

SOUTHERN DISTRICTS v PENRITHAt Forshaw rugby Park

Although unchanged Southern Districts remain unbeaten and Penrith have yet to pick up a point, Souths coach Cam Blades says: “We can’t take anything for granted. Penrith beat us at Forshaw Park last year and although we haven’t lost, we’re still trying to get our game right.” Still, centre Apo Latunipulu is playing with aplomb. According to club president Jim Hook it isn’t all doom and gloom at Penrith. “We’re rebuilding with a lot of young blokes and Norths only led us 14-0 at half-time last Saturday,” he says. Leo Burgess, a local boy, is catching the eye at No 8.

Right to the end, Steve Rowntree, one of Sydney University’s longest serving and most beloved officials, never lost his sense of humour. When his old friend Craig Fear visited him in hospital a couple of days before he lost his brave battle with cancer at the age of 73, Steve said with a smile, “you know I had two tests in South Africa.” As Craig started to say he had no idea Steve had been a Wallaby, he added, “They were both negative.”

you’d see this tall, grey-haired chap sitting with stats man Fear and other University officials at a table near the sideline, sometimes in company with daughter Catriona, the Channel 9 television presenter. He started as gear steward in the mid-80s when son Andrew was playing for the club and over the years became a Sydney University icon, managing touring teams, serving as a committeeman and having the club’s annual Volunteer of the year trophy named after him.

Sydney University President David Mortimer said: “Steve was one of the classic gentlemen who never had an unkind word to say about anyone. A straight-shooter with a smile on his face, a Mister Popularity who was always happy to advise one of the young players. Steve Rowntree’s loyalty and dedication to the club will never be forgotten.”

On game day, Steve would get to University Oval at 8.30am to pump up the balls and make sure the jumpers, balls, black tape and other necessities were in order. He’d often return on Sundays, especially if it had rained the previous day, with washing the mud off the balls among his chores.

Fittingly his funeral was held last Wednesday at The King’s School, which he attended. Steve Rowntree was a man of integrity, warmth, wit and heart with a twinkle in his eye. Simply unforgettable.

rANDWiCk 32 v EAStWOOD 26

Randwick remain undefeated this season following their third straight win, defeating the Woodies at home. Eastwood held on with some hard hitting defence throughout the first half to remain in the game but were down by two tries before Sione Fangia scored one of their own to make it 5-10 at the break.

Randwick made an early surge in the second half with two quick tries, thanks to some innovative play from their backline which has received praise from opposition coaches.

Guided by flyhalf Matt Parkinson playing in the unusual position of scrumhalf, a young but resilient Eastwood side responded with a handful of their own tries to win back the lead at 26-22.

This lead was eventually relinquished in the final ten minutes thanks to the accumulated pressure from Paris Cockinos, Daniel Hughes and the rest of the fit Randwick forward pack.

Eastwood remain unluckily winless this season but will surely have gained a lot of confidence from this match after proving they can match it with one of the competition’s leaders.

gOrDON 37 v WESt hArBOur 5

A morning of heavy rain meant for a very unpleasant and soggy pitch at Concord Oval. A war of attrition followed, with neither team giving up much territory and not surprisingly, the scoreboard attendant had remained unbothered after 25 minutes. Gordon had the wind in the first half and this started to pay dividends when they finally found themselves camped in the Wests 22. Gordon opened their account for the day with a penalty goal but the strong Wests forward pack soon responded with the first try of the day.

Credit must go to the resilience of the Gordon team, who lost two players to the sin bin in the last quarter of the first half, leaving them with 13 men

at one stage. Despite all of this, they somehow managed to conjure their first try of the day, finished by leading Highlanders tryscorer, fullback Brandon Quin whose try under the sticks had the score at 5-10 at oranges.

Tighthead prop Saila Saipele was a standout for Wests, making it his mission to disrupt the Highlanders scrum all match. However Gordon were back to 15 men soon after the commencement of the second half, their centres Alex Gregory and Liam Creeley defending well and ensuring that West Harbour did not convert their early second half possession into points. A handful of late second half tries to the in-form Gordon backline saw the score eventually blow out in what was a very tough and intense game of muddy colts rugby. This Highlanders win opens up a mouth watering matchup this weekend against undefeated local nemesis Northern Suburbs.

Unlike the other grounds, Forshaw Park remained in top condition despite the rain, visited by a Rats side departing for their first bus trip of the year looking to gain their first win after coming up just short the past two rounds.

A plethora of penalties cancelling any pressure from both teams meant that neither side troubled the scoreboard much in the first half. A Warringah penalty and a try to Souths’ lock Harrison Orr being the only exceptions.

Not to be outdone, brother Cameron Orr scored a try of his own, making it a Souths family affair for the day, followed by Souths final points of the match, a try to flanker Jono Canturi.

The scoreline may well have ballooned out had it not been for the tenacious defence of the Warringah back three late in the second half. The Rats eventually scored their only try of the match, a magnificent length of the field effort by speed merchant Max Jones. A reported 40 plus penalty count was the only blemish on what was a great day of Rugby.

Manly first grade colts managed to help save face for their losing grade counterparts with a big win over Parramatta at Keirle Park. Manly had envisaged a close match after the Two Blues had previously come close to competition co-leaders Randwick and Sydney Uni. The match indeed remained close until a red card to a Parramatta player for a spear tackle midway through the first half proved the catalyst for some Marlins points, the halftime score being 21-3 to the men from Manly.

The fatigue of having to play one man down set in for Parramatta in the second half, as Manly ran in seven unanswered tries, thanks to the guidance and distribution of captain Reece Hodge.

The Two Blues host West Harbour this weekend in what will be a very competitive local derby, with Wests coach Mark Gudmunson looking to his always reliable backrow to be the difference against the Two Blues in a fierce western Sydney rivalry.

Other matches, deferred due to rain, had not yet been played at the time of going to press.

With Tim Lane a c c e p t i n g a p o s i t i o n t o coach the Lyon club in France, Phil Blake wil l return as coach o f the Man ly Marlins starting w i t h t o d a y ’ s game against Eastwood.He quit the job

three years ago to become assistant coach of the Wallabies followed with a stint of Super Rugby with the Western Force, starting as an assistant coach and taking over the team for the last eight matches of 2012.“I’ve come home,” said Blake, whose appointment was quickly approved after Lane resigned on Monday. “The sun is shining, I’m re-united with my family after racing round the world non-stop for three years, living at Dee Why and coaching a great bunch of blokes. I’m a happy man.”

Lane will continue to suppor t the M a r l i n s a s a spectator until he heads to France in June to join a n a m b i t i o u s , cashed-up club which is planning to sign a couple of South Africans and a couple of New Zealanders. He will be accompanied by son Sam, who tore his anterior cruciate ligament for the third time playing for Manly last Saturday to put a promising career under a cloud. Lane Jr played for Queensland last year before coming to Sydney in a bid to win a Waratah contract. “The doctors and physios at Lyon will monitor his rehabilitation,” said his father.Damien “Turtle” Cummins, highly regarded as Lane’s assistant coach, will continue in this role with Blake, once a dashing back with several NRL clubs, including the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.

Phil Blake: Manly coach again.

Fijian Sevens representative Dan Rawaqa (pictured scoring) has only played two games with Parramatta but last week showed his skills and abilities with a position change from fullback to flyhalf. An adept playmaker, he scored 19 of the

Two Blues 41 points against Manly. A danger man to West Harbour in the game at Concord Oval.

Tim Lane: off to coach in France.

Northern Suburbs were a force to be reckoned with in the second half of last season. After bouncing back from a slow start, the Shoremen conceded the fewest points in the regular season to surge into the finals where they destroyed Warringah and upset defending champions Eastwood. That success drew the interest of several Super Rugby sides and by the off-season there were Shoremen training all over the country. Some of them, including captain AJ Gilbert, have taken their Super Rugby experiences back to North Sydney Oval as the club endeavours to carry their stellar 2012 form into this season. One of 10 Shute Shield players invited by Michael Cheika to train with the Waratahs over the summer, 25-year old Gilbert says juggling family, work and training called for some long days but he relished the chance to develop his game in the professional environment. “It was a little out of the blue but it was a great opportunity to get a foot in the door and it was one of the best pre-seasons I’ve ever had,” he says. Cheika’s of f-season Shute Shield player recruitments show he’s serious about utilising Sydney club rugby as the breeding ground for the next generation of Waratahs players. Anyone questioning the strength of the Shute Shield competition needs only to look at the five Waratahs who played for their clubs before stepping up a week later and defeating the defending champions, the Chiefs last Friday night. For Gilbert’s Northern Suburbs teammate Cam Crawford, the transition was seamless. Having played a vital role in the Shoremen’s narrow victory over Warringah seven days earlier, Crawford put in a polished performance in his Waratahs debut, scoring a try, taking some of the kicking responsibilities - causing Cheika to admit that he should have been in the team earlier than Round Ten. While Crawford has been on the Super Rugby scene for a couple of years at the Brumbies, Gilbert says knowing the Waratahs coaching staff are keeping an eye on club-land is great motivation. “There are definitely some Shute Shield players that 100-percent should be contracted, and it’s good to know that Cheika is staying in the Sydney scene,” he reveals.“Some of these club players are good enough, but

have to work 8 or 9 hour days then rock up to club trainings at night as opposed to doing it for a living, so it’s just good to know that they’re keeping a look out for them.”It’s not just the Waratahs watching either. Norths players Rory Walton (Force) and Jordan Smiler (Brumbies) both made Super Rugby debuts recently while Scott Sio was selected in the Wallabies logistics camp, another couple of players are in the Australian Sevens squad and lightning winger Corey Brown has transferred his off-season with the Force into some stunning Shute Shield form.“Looking at all those guys starting to make it now speaks volumes for our club,” Gilbert says proudly.“We put a lot of effort in so that guys who aren’t in academies and national programs to have the best opportunities they can and aren’t behind the 8-ball when they get a call-up.”It’s early days, but sitting undefeated at the top of the table and having the best defensive record after three rounds, Norths are well on the way to replicating their 2012 form.

WiLSO’S WHISPERSby Bob Wilson

One of the real nice blokes in our game is Randwick’s Terry “Chang” McMahon who hasn’t been in the best of health recently. Chang has been down at Coogee as a player, coach and just about everything else since he was a kid. He is one of the best in the business and only gave away the First’s Manager’s job at the ‘Wicks’ this year. His son Nathan aka “Coma” who has been giving regular updates said he had an operation last Thursday and is doing well. Anyway, he didn’t do too well overnight and had to have another operation and was put into intensive care. The doctors said that he had a rare medical case but some reckon he is a rare bloke. The good news is he is on the road to recovery and he will be in hospital for a few more weeks. All the best Chang, there are plenty of blokes that think you are not only a rare bloke but a bloody good one as well.

At the conclusion of a joint Eastern Suburbs Rugby Board and Foundation meeting in the city last week the President of Easts Tony MacQuillan and First Grade coach, Mark Bakewell both charged with plotting the future direction of Easts, jumped in the car for the drive back into the Eastern Suburbs.

On leaving the car park in Kent Street, Tony provided directions to the coach… go left, now right here Mark, left here and now straight ahead. All of a sudden they are heading north over the Harbour Bridge ending up at Norths Rugby Club. Finally on the way back and after two or three laps of Arthur Street and Falcon Street they finally were heading back to the Eastern Suburbs.

On top of this, Bako's was driving his wife's car, and the ETAG didn't work so a photo was taken heading south over the Cahill Expressway and he was pinged for not paying the toll and as well as being late home he had difficulty in explaining what happened. This is a true story. Just ask the two Life Members sitting in the back seat, those being Michael Lakeman and Peter Shipway.

I am sure the Beasties will be heading in the right direction on the football field unlike around the city.

Still down at Easts, it is with regret that I have to advise the passing last week of former long serving prop, Bob “Buzz” Bailey who fought a long battle with bowel cancer. Buzz played 108 1st Grade matches and 178 Grade games for the Tricolours in the 60’s and 70’s which included a First Grade Premiership in 1969.

On retirement he also served on the club’s committee and was a Delegate to the SRU. Buzz, along with his front-row partners Lawrie Fahy and Andy Tyler, used to “look after” any new, young up and coming front rower who joined the club after training in the bar at Easts. How lucky were you if you didn’t play up front. They would offer plenty of fatherly advice over a few schooners. If you passed their test you were mighty lucky. Another good bloke who joins that mighty good side in the sky.

It’s been a bad week down at Woollahra with former East’s and Colleagues Rugby player, Doug Ambrose passing away last week. Doug who also played cricket for the Waverley club enjoyed life and played the majority of his career with Colleagues. He was farewelled by plenty of his mates and given a true Colleagues send off.

Another player from the Mid North Coast made his Super Rugby debut recently, Western Force’s Rory Walton. Rory started playing Rugby for the Coffs Harbour Crusaders Juniors before going on to play Under 19’s and Senior Rugby with the Coffs Harbour Snappers Club. He played in the Under 19’s side in 2005 and the Premiership winning 2006 and 2007 First Grade teams before moving to Sydney where he played for Northern Suburbs.

His brother Mitch who now plays for Gordon after previously being with Norths was in Coffs Harbour’s 2009 Premiership team when only 17 years of age.
