Business Greetings
• The typical greeting is a firm, handshake.• When men shake hands with women the grip is
less firm.• When female friends meet, they kiss on the
cheek three times.• When close male friends meet, they may pat
each other on the back and hug.
Official Dress• Businessmen in Russia usually wear suits that are
black and well tailored along with good dress shoes.• Men often do not take off their jackets in
negotiations. • Skirts should be worn rather than pants.• Women dress rather conservatively, avoiding overly
flashy or gaudy outfits. • Women are recommended to avoid perfumes,
lipstick and ostentatious jewelry.
Business Cards
• One side is in Russian and one side is in English.
• Includes advanced university degrees on your business card.
Business Introductions
• Russians always use formal names.
Table Manners
• The oldest or most honored guest is served first.
• Do not begin eating until the host invites you to start.
• Do not rest your elbows on the table.
• It is polite to use bread to soak up gravy or sauce.
• Men pour drinks for women seated next to them
Gift Giving
• If you are invited to a Russian home for a meal, bring a small gift.• Male guests are expected to bring flowers • Do not give yellow flowers. • Do not give a baby gift until after the baby is born. • On receiving an invitation to a home, luxury chocolates or a scarf
for the hostess would be a welcome gift - or an uneven number of flowers are acceptable on visiting a house of mourning.
Summary
• Russians are very formal.• All of there business meetings are very
serious.• They don’t joke around very much.
