IMPERIALIST VS. ANTI-IMPERIALIST

Who: Most Captains of Industry and other business owners, Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt

Who: Former abolitionist, socialist, labor unions, feminist, civil rights activist

God given right to rule over other peoples because Americans/Europeans are better. – Nationalism

People should give their rulers consent to be ruled.

It is patriotic to be an imperialist and to continue the spread of U.S. expansion

It is unpatriotic to be imperialist because the idea of ruling people that do not want to be ruled goes against the core of American’s principles. (The Constitution and the Declaration of Independence)

U.S. government and culture is the best and it should be spread around to others– Nationalism.

The lands in question (Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines) NEED help from the U.S. – they are incapable of self-rule.

Fear of “contamination” from savage people of exotic lands. -- Racist beliefs

U.S. needs places to TRADE with

It might create more competition for U.S. jobs– which would be bad.

The ‘savages’ need to be saved and converted to Christianity.

U.S. should focus on the social problems it has at home.
