    Psychological factors of studying Georgian as a second language in schools

    ABSTRACT The goal of the presented research is to study psychological factors that influence Georgian as a second language acquisition in formal educational settings that might be accompanied with informal context. The theoretical background of the research is based on Muller social-cognitive model (1997). According to the research hypotheses, the questionnaire was designed for students and teachers. The research was conducted in Tbilisi public schools, where Georgian is a second language. 140 students and 12 teachers participated in the research. Students' level of knowledge was measured by their academic grades in the second language (Georgian language) and by their teachers' assessments. Results revealed some main factors that influence success in second language acquisition: integration, motivation, instrumental motivation, language skills self-esteem and student's school self-concept.

The introduction describes the historical background of ,,immersion’’, as a program of bilingual education. The main focus is made on Canadian Immersion, because ,,Immersion’’ originated in Canada. In the next part of the article the problem areas of French immersion programs are discussed. It gives an overview of the framework for appropriate pedagogy in Immersion programs.     (project "ethnic security aspects in polytechnic society")

    ABSTRACT The presented article describes psycho-social and cultural climate characteristics of the population of Tsalka region, as well as ethnic group relation specifics and their influence on the official language acquisition. Research is conducted by the interview method. The results revealed some main factors that interfere with the process of social integration of ethnic groups. One of the most important among those factors is the absence of common communicative language: Georgian language is the official language only formally, since the considerable amount of inhabitants speaks only their mother tongue. The given psycho-social climate is an obstacle for learning Georgian language.
