Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to this half term’s newsletter that I hope you enjoy reading. I will begin by congratulating

Boudicca House on winning the House trophy for the second time. Mr Bartholomew and Mrs

Wooldridge arranged a seasonal chocolate treat for members of the winning House and have

captured some photos that are shared inside this newsletter.

This term we also hosted a tea party for members of our local community and this was thoroughly

enjoyed by all. Students, staff and our guests enjoyed tea and cake and sharing personal Stowup-

land and Suffolk stories from bygone years. Thank you to Mrs Salisbury, Mrs Lewis, Mrs Pizzey

and all those involved for organising the event and we look forward to our next tea party! Boudicca

House has sent some Easter eggs to the residents of Jubilee House who attended the tea party.

Y13 and Y11 are now in the final stages of revising and preparing for their forthcoming exams and I

take this opportunity to wish them every success.

I wish you all a very happy Easter and look forward to our continued working together next term.

Best wishes,

Ms Baster

HOUSE SYSTEM

Mr Bartholomew

As well as plenty of House points won for school work this half term, we have also had

football tournaments and the Bake-Off.

Well done to Boudicca who win the House league trophy for the second time this

year! Despite Wolsey winning points with their baking skills and Ryder leading the

way for weeks, it was Boudicca who won lots of points from the sports field and the

kitchen.

Boudicca House members were invited to collect their prizes of Easter eggs from the

Easter Bunny in Tutor Time on the last Friday afternoon of term.

YEAR 7

Mr Holden

What have Year 7 been up to leading up to the Easter holidays?

As part of their Science lesson, Mr Dick’s groups investigated chemical reactions.

The Year 7s have also been learning about settlements this term. We have shared ideas

and used maps to consider where the best place for settlements would be and what

resources would be required. We then moved on to settlement shapes, the

difference between rural and urban settlements, settlement hierarchies and settlement

functions. This has provided students with a deeper understanding of why people live

where they do and how settlements grow and change. We have also continued to

strengthen our OS map skills that we developed last year.

During History and Religious Studies lessons, students have been learning all about the

invasions of Britain by the Romans and the Saxons, Vikings and finally the Normans.

They have studied the events of 1066, including re-enacting the Battle of Hastings in

the roles of Saxon Housecarls with their shield wall and Norman archers and cavalry to

understand how William won the day. They are currently learning how King William

managed to conquer England and rule over 2 million Saxons with only 10,000 men

through his castles and the Feudal System and Domesday Survey. In addition, students

have completed some wonderfully detailed and creatively presented Medieval

Monarchs homework research projects to help gain an overview of the Middle Ages as

a whole.

YEAR 8 Year 8 Handball Tournament - 6th March 2019 The U13s played in an area competition against two other teams from Thurston. They started against Thurston ‘B’ growing in confidence as the game went on, eventually winning 10-5. Their second game was against the more experienced Thurston ‘A’ team. The boys started competitively, working really hard to stay in the game, but gradually the opposition pulled away to win 16-4. Despite this, the team dug deep until the end, scoring some fantastic final goals in the dying minutes. I am sure that the boys gained a lot from the experience, and enjoyed playing against the opposition. Well played to all team members: Ben Gilbert, Daniel Browning, Dominic Horswill, Alec Munteanu, Harry Steed, Harvey Townend and Dylan Johnson.

Enterprise Challenge Year 8 students were set the challenge to see how much money they could raise within five days. Each tutor group in Year 8 were given £2 to start their enterprise projects. The students really embraced this challenge and came up with some excellent ideas. They have demonstrated many of the attributes for LORIC (Leadership, Organisation, Resilience, Initiative and Communication). 8KC came up with an excellent cup stacking idea where students were timed to see how quickly they could complete the challenge using the cups to create a pyramid, the prize being an Easter Egg.

YEAR 9

Miss Wardley

A big thank you to all our parents and carers who attended the Y9 Parents’ Even-

ing, a total of 123. I hope you found it helpful and informative. This is an incredibly

busy and important year for Y9 and a great deal of work has already been complet-

ed as we continue preparing for Y10. Well done to those who returned the options

choice form on or before the deadline date. Mrs Neal is currently in the sorting

process and is preparing individual timetables for members of the year group. His-

tory would appear to be the most popular subject with 104 students selecting it

for one of their choices. Mrs Neal will be confirming option offers in a letter to par-

ents/carers in May 2019.

Drama students in Y9 have been contributing to some wonderful work at our

school. Firstly, Evie Cooper (9ST) stood in as a non-assessed candidate for the Y11

Drama Examination. Secondly, Stan Allsop (9ST) did lighting for the Y13 Drama Ex-

amination. Thirdly, Stan Allsop (9ST), Holly Fear (9AHM) and Zoe Smith (9KP) are

going to watch ‘The Woman in Black’ as an incentive.

Kristian Mitchell has successfully completed his field craft weekend at army cadets

and passed the basic training. He is now moving on to one-star training. Y9 is also

enjoying success in sport. The U14 netball squad enjoyed a celebratory meal at

Pizza Hut following their second place win in the tournament finals. The U14 rug-

by team qualified for the County Finals which is an outstanding achievement. They

are now ranked 5th best U14 rugby team in Suffolk. A big thank you to Mr Barry

for all of his hard work.

I have also shared with students and know that Ms Baster has written to parents to

to share that I have voluntarily relinquished my role as Progress Leader for Y9. I

wish Y9 all the very best as they prepare for Y10 and will continue to work with

them in my role as teacher of PE.

ENRICHMENT Year 8 Dance Club - Feature

Renee McLaughlin (11RD) and Emily Tume (11RD) are both Gold Dance Ambassadors and

have been running the Year 8 dance club since September. They have been absolutely

superb and have created some outstanding dances with the Year 8 students. They are

both extremely talented dancers and I know the Year 8 students have really enjoyed

working with them during the enrichment activities.

“I have really enjoyed having the Year 11 GCSE Dance students teach me on a Wednesday afternoon. They make up lots of dances and they help you when you are struggling.” - Maria Fiske 8DT

YEAR 10 Year 10 GCSE Biology This term 10Q2 and 10P2 have been studying the cells, coordination and control unit of the GCSE Biology course. This has included some really interesting topics such as brain function, the nervous system and how organisms grow through mitosis. The unit also presents students with a fascinating dissection opportunity; the objective of this is to explore the components of the eye and their function. Below are some pictures of the pigs’ eye dissections that students carried out.

Year 10 Football Huge congratulations to the Year 10 football team who are through to the semi-final of the County Cup competition. They defeated the current holders, Kesgrave High School, 1 - 0 away from home and face East Bergholt High School in the semi-final; this will be a home fixture and Mr Broom is confident that if they can produce the same level of performance they have previously, they could go all the way this year! We wish the team the best of luck.

Positive points this term Here are the top ten students for the highest number of positive points in Year 10 this term. Positive points are awarded to students by staff for a variety of reasons.

Work experience update All students should have now selected their placement options on the CONNECT Business and Education database or have passed details of employers for placements that have been arranged independently to Mrs McLauchlan or Mrs Southgate. The ad-min team is currently in the process of contacting employers to confirm placements; we are aware that there have been some delays in working through this and plan to have this resolved ready for after the Easter break.

Y11 Masterclasses

After the success of the Spring 1 Masterclass sessions we have kick started a second

round this term. Heads of department sat down to ensure that students are being

targeted correctly for these sessions, but never fear if you have not been put down for

this round. Every department is offering comprehensive weekly revision sessions that

everyone can access and attend. Full details are in the revision flyer that was previously

sent out.

It has been great to see a variety of students engaging in both the masterclasses and

general revision support that is being offered; keep going strong for these last four weeks

and pull out all of the stops!

Y11 Drama and Food Exams

Drama and Food Technology students faced a couple of gruelling weeks when the

practical exams took place. We were absolutely blown away by the quality of work

produced and steadfastness of our students during this testing time. Several members of

staff were around to cheer on and offer taste buds to ensure rigorous quality testing!

Easter Revision

We hope that students have a productive Easter Holiday making the most of revision time. To support this, several subjects are putting on Easter Revision sessions to supplement all of the support that is already being offered.

SPORTS It has been another busy half term for PE and School Sport. There have been fixtures in

netball, badminton, handball, tchoukball, football and rugby. We have also had a dance

trip organised by Mrs Brand where over 40 students attended. Massive congratulations

to all those students that have represented their school this half term.

Year 7 Boys’ Badminton Tournament

We took four boys to take part in their first ever badminton tournament. The boys

played fantastically well and showed improvements through each game. The boys en-

joyed the experience and did the school proud. A special mention to Henry Clark who

went through the entire tournament undefeated, beating the top player from every

school that attended.

U13 Tchoukball Year 8 boys’ tchoukball team travelled to Stowmarket for the Gipping Valley competition and competed against two teams from Thurston and one from Stowmarket. The boys got better and better through the tournament and managed one win, one draw and one loss. Unfortunately, our first game was the hardest and we lost to Stowmarket, the eventual winners. A fantastic performance from all the boys, but our star player has to go to Max Adderson who scored lots of our points.

SPORTS Move It Dance - 8th March 2019 On 8th March we took 48 students from KS3 and KS4 to the dance convention ‘Move It’ held at the Excel arena in London. Students were really excited as they got to take part in Hip Hop and Commercial dance workshops as well as browsing through all the stands. The students were also lucky enough to meet celebrities Louie Spence and Aston Merrygold as well as contestants Harry and Eleiyah off the BBC’s ‘Greatest Dancer’. The day was a huge success and the students all came back with lots of knowledge about potential ways to further a career in Dance.

Year 11 Boys’ Football

The Year 11 boys’ football produced another impressive performance to beat Farlingaye in the semi-final of the Suffolk Schools’ County Cup. Goals from Connor Moore, Will Smith and a hat-trick from Harvey Norman made sure of the win. Congratulations to all the boys involved and we now all look forward to the final after Easter.

SIXTH FORM The last two weeks have seen the students actively supporting their wider community with their film inspired dress-up day which raised a significant amount of money for Comic Relief. The theme of global citizenship was further extended by Kate Robinson and Kayleigh Smith attending the Holocaust Memorial Trust seminars in London, followed by a trip to Auschwitz. In conversation with them both they found it a moving and profound experience. They will now use their knowledge to team-teach in Year 9 lessons within the History department on the topic, as well as doing a series of assemblies.

For Year 13 the reality of the final exams has come a step closer; the Drama group having already performed their final pieces on Monday 6th March. Their group piece on the interaction of young women and how women’s rights have developed over the century was performed with sensitivity and precision, resulting in a powerful performance. This was coupled with excellent monologues and duologues. Well done to all involved!

Finally, a reminder to Year 12 that although work experience seems a long way off (week beginning June 24th) they should be contacting and securing placements in the next few weeks. Tutors have been busy giving advice and ideas of where to apply. Remember it is the skills you learn on work experience that is the most important part.

New Sixth Formers Escape to Ipswich 20 Year 11 students who are joining the Sixth Form in September 2019 spent an afternoon together at the Escape Rooms in Ipswich, as a way of galvanising their team spirit and leadership skills and preparing for their transition into the Sixth Form. The group were tasked with leading the afternoon themselves, including navigating their way there and leading their ‘escape’ in teams. Amanda Walden, Head of Sixth Form, said “This is the kind of activity that really brings the group together. I’m really excited about the level of leadership and initiative we clearly have coming into the Sixth Form”. Welcome!

Mrs Walden
