FALL 2010 LAND TRUST NEWS Celebrating our 10th year preserving the natural and scenic character of our island A two-story fort, surrounded by four wooden sailboats, swings, climbing apparatuses, and a giant sundial maze all add up to one big adventure for kids at the new playground in Frederica Park. “The idea was to plant a seed for adventure out on the playground, while keeping the site safe from the parking lot,” said the playground’s designer, Nathan Brock. The builder, Steve Schoele, noted that the playground was constructed with cypress from local wetlands. “The playground is the crown jewel of the park for the kids,” said Land Trust Executive Director Russ Marane at the Aug. 30 opening. “It’s the last piece of the puzzle to make this park all it can be.” The playground was the giſt of the Stuart and Eulene Murray Foundation, represented at the playground opening by their great-grandson, Hank Rowland, his wife Julie, and their children, Chappy and Anna Grace. The St. Simons Land Trust built the park on Lawrence Road in 2009 on property donated by the Sea Island Company. The Land Trust continues to improve the park, which has been donated to Glynn County. The Campaign to Preserve the Old Stables Corner

the Land trust is tremendously grateful for the overwhelming response from the community to The Campaign to Preserve the Old Stables Corner. We welcome 123 new members and 181 returning members, and greatly appreciate the 400+ individual gifts that have brought us to within 2 percent of our goal. We have raised over $2.55 million in gifts and pledges since May. thank you!

Gifts and memberships up to $1,000 made in support of the old stables Corner

The 2.3-acre parcel at the corner of Sea Island and

Frederica roads was slated for commercial development when, thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor who offered to pay half the cost to acquire the property, the St. Simons Land Trust went into action to preserve it as green space. In mid-July, the Land Trust took ownership of the corner where the old Sea Island Stables stood for more than 50 years. The parcel, part of a larger commercial tract, was approved by the Island Planning Commission for commercial development over a year ago. While the remainder of the tract is now being developed for retail use, the landmark corner will be preserved as green space. “Many of our members and friends had voiced the hope that the property could remain a green space,” said Land Trust Board Chairman Lee Richards. “When we saw an imminent threat that it would be developed, thanks to an anonymous donor, we were able to move forward quickly to preserve the corner so that future generations could continue to enjoy its character and charm.”Richards noted that the corner is covered by a significant tree canopy of 58 trees, including 49 live oaks.To preserve the property, the Land Trust launched a major campaign to raise $2.6 million, which includes all costs for the acquisition, as well as funding for stewardship of the property. To date, more than $2.55 million has been raised. The Land Trust borrowed the funds needed to close on the property by the mid-July contract deadline. The fundraising campaign will continue until the $2.6 million goal is reached and a challenge grant – offered by Jim and Jeanne Manning until the end of September – is met.

Stewardship in actionIn the meantime, the Land Trust is proceeding with some needed stewardship of the property. In order to provide irrigation for the existing trees and grass, the Land Trust began by digging a well. Once construction on the new access road bordering the property on the north is completed, new grass will be added to the site. The Land Trust has already saved several of the live oak trees that were to be removed for development of the commercial sites along the Sea Island Road side of the larger tract. The trees will

be moved to the Old Stables Corner this fall. They, too, will require water to get established at their new home.Soon the large stately live oak trees will have some badly needed surgery to remove dead and diseased wood. Also, the understory will be re-graded so that surface water will be directed toward the trees instead of away from them, and all the invasive weeds and vines covering many of the trees will be removed. Finally, a two-rail fence of the type that surrounded the old stables’ riding areas will be installed to define the property line and to serve as a reminder of what was once there – minus the famous roosters that used to greet passersby. No events or on-site parking are planned. However, the property is open to the public to explore and enjoy this idyllic oak-covered spot. The campaign steering committee is chaired by Ben Slade III and includes Lee Richards, Don Myers, Frances McCrary, Jane Thau, Jim Manning, and John Rogers. Russ Marane and Dana Pope represent the Land Trust staff.
