NEWS FROM SOUTH AUSTRALIAN RUGBY UNION

Change in Directors for SA Rugby Board

Following the resignation of Tom Phillips from the position of Board appointed director due to his commitments to other boards and businesses, Mark Pickard has accepted an invitation to replace him on the board of SARU. Mark has been involved in rugby and business for many years in Adelaide and still occasionally puts the boots on in Old Collegians’ lower grades. Mark has been very supportive of and generous in developing both the profile of our game and increasing participation levels in Adelaide. Mark will bring passion and drive as well as his wide range of contact and resources to the Board. Mark is a l ife member of OC.

New CEO of South Australian Rugby Following the resignation of Rob Nelson, South Australian Rugby Union has appointed leading sports administrator, Lachlan Clark, as the new chief executive officer. With more than 10 years experience in senior sports administration roles, Mr Clark has most recently led Australia’s peak sports body as General Manager for the Confederation of Australian Sport (CAS). Mr Clark’s role included responsibility for the Australian Master Games, which he has overseen for the past six years. A former Australian national ski team member, Mr Clark has previously held operational management positions with the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games. Chairman of SA Rugby, Mr Wally Bell, said Mr Clark will bring a wealth of sport administration and participation experience to the organisation. “We have recruited a talented individual who has been heavily involved in both sides of sport –participation and administration. Lachlan has an impressive background in sports administration, and importantly for SA Rugby he has played the game at the grass roots level, and has represented his country

at the highest level - as a member of Australia’s ski team. We are thrilled to have Lachlan join the rugby team in South Australia. It’s a challenging and exciting time for our sport in South Australia and we look forward to Lachlan driving the growth of our game right across the State.”

Referees Leadership Development The SA Rugby Union Referees Association and SA Rugby have developed a Leadership Development Program to be offered to U16 and U18 players in 2008. This program is intended to provide young participants in Rugby a development pathway that may take them into refereeing while at the same time providing leadership and game knowledge that will enhance their playing ability and contribution to their club. It is hoped that through attendance in this program, these players will perform duties of club touch judge and/or referee at the pathway level in games involving their club.

Referees introduce Club Liaison Officers The SA Rugby Union Referees Association has appointed Club Liaison Officers to improve communication and cooperation with clubs. Our good friend Gary Pope has been appointed to Old Collegians. The role of SARURA club liaison representatives includes to visit liaison club at least monthly (e.g. training nights), but preferably more often to liaise with club president, secretary and coaches, to strengthen communication between the SARURA and clubs on referee & touch judge law interpretations and performance, club support for referees & touch judges, Club involvement in Leadership Development Program (e.g. support for participants from club mentors and SARURA mentors).

VODAFONE ADELAIDE BLACK FALCONS

So far in the 2008 Australian Rugby Shield the Vodafone Adelaide Black Falcons were unlucky to lose to Darwin (18 to 20) but had a great victory against Melbourne (14 to 3). The Falcons also had a great win against Tasmania in a demonstration game (45 to 0). The Falcons play Queensland Country in the Gold Coast on 24 May and your next chance to cheer on the home town boys is when they play NSW Country at Burnside on 31 May (see p1). Congratulations to the OC boys in the squad this year: Christian Tedge, Jon Collins, Simon Burmester, Ben Suttell, Ben Hamer, Tom Moon, Richard Czeglik and Leigh Rebbeck. Bad luck to Benny Hamer (left) who fractured a cheekbone against Melbourne and will not be playing rugby for a little while!

SENIOR RUGBY

SENIOR SELECTION POLICY First and Second Grade To be eligible for selection for First or Second grade players are required to attend two (2) training sessions per week. Third, Fourth and Women’s Grade Players are encouraged to train twice per week to improve their fitness and their chances for promotion, but to be eligible for selection players are required to attend at least one (1) training session per week, preferably the Thursday night. Training Sessions There are two (2) main training sessions per week, currently Tuesday and Thursday nights. Occasionally, particularly leading up to the finals, extra training sessions may be scheduled at the discretion of the coaches. Prior notice will be given to the players if extra sessions are planned. Training Attendance Record The Selection Committee will keep a record of all training attendances. If a player cannot attend training the player is required to call/SMS : - Graham Raymond (Head Coach) 0414647768 - Danny McCarten (Rugby Director) 0412849004 - Club phone (after 6pm) 83794770 - Kath Cherry (Women’s team) 0413561321

and provide a reason for non-attendance i.e. injury, illness or work commitments etc. Apologies via team mates will not be accepted. The Training Attendance Record is an important part of the selection process with priority given to players that train over those who don’t. There will be a chart in the change rooms that will show every players

training attendance throughout the season, this will be updated after each training session. Injured Players Players injured during games or training will only be eligible for selection once they have been cleared to play by our medical team and passed fit by the coaches. Injured players are expected to attend the club to receive treatment. Players who miss more than two (2) consecutive games will be selected in a lower grade than what they were playing in prior to injury. NB This will be subject to the discretion of the Selection Committee taking into account the individual’s prior form, current fitness and team balance issues. State Representatives Players who have been absent due to State Team commitments will be eligible for automatic selection wherever the Selection Committee deem fit. Suspended Players Players found guilty of an offence by the SARU Judiciary will not necessarily follow the above process once their suspension has been served. The Selection Committee can impose its own further penalties depending on the seriousness of the original offence.

WOMEN’S GRADE Coach: Kathryn Cherry Manager: Susan Brooks

The women’s competition is ten aside this year, due to problems most teams have in fielding 15 with any regularity (or at all). However, so that the girls don’t lose the hang of the fifteen aside game all teams come together once a month to play a combined barbarians game. The first game (10 May) was played in excellent spirit and showed some of the best rugby the girls have played in quite a while. It is hoped these days will encourage teams to recruit harder and try and get the ordinary club comp back to 15 aside soon.

SEVENS TEAM UNDEFEATED!

Congratulations to the Under 16s on their recent success in the Junior Regional Sevens competition held in April. For three weekends the U16s have played in a series of Sevens matches organised by SARU culminating in a sevens gala day. Weekend One saw the boys draw against Burnside A in a very entertaining game and trounce Burnside B with some excellent running rugby (even from the forwards!). These were cracking results given the school holidays and a turn out of only nine players. On Weekend Two the boys defeated Burnside A 17 to 12 again a close match with the result going to the last minute; superb commitment and excellent defence were clearly the difference. The second game of the weekend saw the boys put on a great display of running rugby against Souths and winning 28 to 0, with all concerned now looking forward to the Gala tournament to follow. (Sadly we would be

missing our two newly enrolled islanders for the Gala day plus an injured Vern Lee, all three not included in the photo). Onto the Gala weekend: we posted wins against Souths A, Vikings B and most pleasingly Onka’s A. However, sadly the boys missed out on playing in the final on a points count back as there were two other undefeated teams on the day. The most pleasing aspect has been the courage, support play and resolute defence that all the boys have shown. The coaching staff and parents are immensely proud of the boys and we clearly have a good mix of experience, new boys from the under 14s last year who got stuck in really well and some converts from rugby league which is always pleasing. I’d personally like to thank Tony Herve, Guy Barrett and Michael Barrett for there support to date what a good way to start things off.

10 May 2008: Burnside 7 v Old Collegians 50

Tries: Java Posala, Sambanis, Blackall, Linder-Patton, Laurendi (3) and Macklin Best players; Macklin, Laurendi

In the first match of the season, a very strong team performance with 8 tries including 3 to our debut Full Back Vince Laurendi. This was a strong first performance following the successful sevens campaign. The first half was marred by some handling errors caused by the very fast aggressive approach to the game adopted by the team. More work needs to be done by the forward pack on its scrummaging but the signs are very promising given the size of the front row. Very good performance by the backs.

17 May 2008: Southern Suburbs 0 v Old Collegians 39 Best players; Macklin, Sambanis, Blackall, Verlato and Tuimaseve.

Tries: Macklin (2), Blackall (2), Sambanis (2) and Eames. A strong performance particularly in the first half. The scrum was better with particularly good work done by two of the big men in the front row, Blackall (2 tries) and Verlato who consistently broke the advantage line of Souths. The backs engaged in strong set piece plays which often led to the scoring of tries with one of the two members of the Samoan phalanx Norman Tuimaseve dominating play in the number 10 position. This created opportunities for Macklin (2 tries) and Sambanis (2 tries). The team played in a manner such that the Souths backs could not get clean ball and were constantly unsettled.

10 May 2008: Burnside A 76 v Old Collegians 7 Try: Alex Imber Conversion: Chris Hodgson.

Sadly, our first game of the season saw us take on a very powerful and well organised Burnside pack with a back division to boot. The final score did not do us justice and there was some excellent defence all round. Tackling let us down on occasions and allowed the score to blow out. The second half saw us have more territory and possession but we were unable to break the organisation that Burnside were able to create. Nevertheless, there is plenty of hope for the season and lots of good work to build on. First games for a number of players: Lloyd Allison, Jarrod Barton, Harry Trantor, Will McLachlan and Sean Gilligan. Well done! Pick of the day were Harry Trantor, Andrew Smith, Sean Gilligan and Nick Lanchester in the forwards and Ollie L-P in the backs. Tom Litchfield, Peter Cowen and Nick Howlett also did well.

17 May 2008: Southern Suburbs 54 v Old Collegians 0 After a hard game against Burnside last week, the coaching staff approached the game against Souths with much anticipation. Sadly, the conditions were more typical of Northern Hemisphere rugby with a slippery surface and a ball that resembled a bar of soap. Our forwards worked hard in the first half with the wind and rain in their faces but in spite of our best efforts, we remained pinned in our own half with no way of escape. There was some stout defence but too often we were unable to maintain our alignment and Souths excellent backs carved us apart, taking advantage of the conditions. Our commitment to the tackle and our hunger for the ball let us down too often in the second half. We were too slow to the breakdown and the avalanche that was Souths total domination eventually overwhelmed our defences. Encouraging was our performance in the lineout and our scrum was rock solid. We have to transfer this to the rest of our game. I am confident that we have the ability to be more competitive and I am sure that as the season progresses our team work, commitment, fitness and understanding of the game will improve. Best on ground were Andrew Smith, Tom Litchfield, Harry Trantor for their work rate and Alex Imber for his solid defence.

JUNIOR SEVENS GALA DAY Thanks to all the players who turned up at 8.00am on the Junior Sevens Gala Day notwithstanding heavy downpours: Rick Wilkinson, Lachlan Pridham, Cameron Andrews, Luke Howes, Connor Braidwood, Nathan Illic,Isaac Taylor, and Digby Sever. In the first game against Souths we had 8 players: we scored first (Lachlan). Souths made a breakaway and all of our players chased down the length of the field. This took a bit out of the boys and, with only 1 sub, the guys got tired quickly. Note: this is why fitness and player numbers are so important! Souths then ran over us through weight of numbers - more players with fresh legs. The pleasing aspect was we had their measure for about a third of the game but Souths went on to win the whole tournament. Congratulations to first gamers Connor Braidwood and Nathan Illic. Unfortunately for us, Rick Wilkinson strained a hamstring midway through the second half and was unable to play in any more games. So down to 7 players, thanks to George Wells for coming out of his sick bed to help us for the second game against Brighton. Our teamwork improved in this game and we did not worry about the score too much-it was more of an exercise in building teamwork and conserving energy to run out the game (and the rest of the tournament). One highlight was seeing Nathan run into a pack of defenders with the ball and emerge still on his feet (with the ball) walking towards the try line with about 4 Brighton players hanging on him! Luke, George and

Connor B did a good job cutting down the outside breaks and forcing the attack back towards our cover defence. The best moment was when we worked the ball down the middle AS A TEAM with Isaac providing excellent support and we scored under the posts. Danny Towill (another first gamer) arrived to boost our numbers to 9 for the last game against Burnside 3. With the luxury of a forward sub and a back sub, we were able to apply some pressure and employ a secret tactic. Lachlan had an outstanding game and scored twice. Digby also had a great game. In the second half Cameron took a brilliant tap and dived across the line to put us up 15 to 12. Burnside scored again to put them up 17 to 15. After intercepting the ball in our half and blasting down the wing we put the ball over the line... unluckily for us it was the 5 metre line! That would have put us in the lead. In the confusion, Burnside were able to make a run the whole length of the field and were brilliantly run down by Danny Towill, they passed and George made a valiant attempt to get a hand on the runner before they ran over and scored. 22-15. This was the game that we dominated and Burnside 3 went on to be the other team in the Final. All up, the sevens tournament was great to get a measure of where we stand against the competition and to highlight some areas of improvement. We are not far off the mark and with a full squad training each week we are looking to give the season a real shake.

16

10 May 2008: Burnside A 0 v Old Collegians 47

Tries: Rick(2), Lachlan(2), Cameron(2), Digby (2), and Isaac We had an excellent turnout at training and 17 players took the field. Amos had to take the field in his t-shirt because none of the U12 shirts were big enough for him! Cameron was captain this week and had a brilliant game. Abraham was focussed and had some good runs and shared the hooker position with Grayson, who also made some good tackles. After a quiet start, Dexter warmed to the task and seemed to come up with the ball all over the place. New player Connor Braidwood got hold of the ball a few times too, running and linking up well with team mates. Another new player to the club, Steve Whipp, was hard at the ball and I think we can expect a good season from him. Surprisingly, I don't think we won any lineouts so that is something we need to work on. The backs need to keep their lines in position a little better too, so that when the ball does come out we can quickly spin it out along the line. What was pleasing was that we retained possession well as a team and there were very few ball handling errors. On the 2 or 3 occasions that the opposition got the ball out to their backs, Rick and Cameron were there with crunching tackles stopping them from even making the gain line. The game was played fairly and in good spirit. Once however, when Nathan was charging along with the ball, I even think the referee may have given a penalty against us because he was worried about Burnside getting steam-rolled! It is a bit unfair to single out good players because the whole team played such a great game for the season opener. The scary thing is ...I think there is a lot more improvement to come in this team.

17 May 2008: Southern Suburbs 26 v Old Collegians 25 Tries: Rick Wilkinson(2), Cameron Andrews(2), Dexter Duckett(1).

This was an excellent match and was ours for the taking. We were down 10 to 21 at half time and effectively won the second half 15 to 5. What was even more remarkable was we played with 13 players for the first half with no subs and had one sub after half time. On the evidence, this would suggest that having one more player, potentially made a 21 point difference (keep in mind we lost by a single point)! Imagine what could have been had we had the 18 players expected. Fortunately, Souths wanted to play with 13 players even though they had 19 at the game. Ostensibly, they had 5 or 6 players that were new to the game and didn’t want them all on at the same time. Tactically that worked in their favour. Their strength was a single small but agile centre player, Save (pronounced Savee) who was very smart (he scored 3 of their 4 tries). By dropping the 2 flankers off the scrum, their inside backs could get the ball out to him without much pressure. Souths had subs and we didn’t so our players got pretty tired, and consequently we didn’t make as good decisions at times. Some of our players’ fitness was tested. Nevertheless, we outscored Souths by 5 tries to 4 and they converted 3 times to our nil (although 1 hit the cross bar…doh!). Imagine what could have been had we converted at 20%? Admittedly, most of our tries were scored out wide. Highlights: Dexter Duckett’s try was a ‘ripper- real guts to keep going and reach out and put it down’-AB, second half come back when all were tired, Danny Towill and Isaac Taylor found their legs with some long runs down the wings. Connor Braidwood & Steve Whipp did a great job in the scrum when they were thrown into 2nd row. Andrew Ascough was another young player who was able to adapt to playing multiple positions wherever we needed him. Overall, we will learn valuable lessons from this match. Congratulations to Souths and it was a game we could have won IF…so let us make sure we don’t leave anyone wondering again!

10 May 2008: Burnside 65 v Old Collegians 5

Try: Sebastian Thompson A game of two halves with the better prepared and bugger Burnside team scoring most of their tries in the first half before we really settled down. The second half saw a huge improvement with OCs keeping most of the possession and making good territory without quite getting over more than once.

10 May 2008: Burnside v Old Collegians

A good start to the season. Special praise goes to Thomas Copson who did everything asked of him by the coach. Sadly the other U8 team did not get a game due to a glitch in the scheduling. Hopefully, we can work this out with SARU for future weekends to avoid further disappointment. Apologies to all who came but did not get a game.

CLUB NEWS

SCRUM BAG Check out the ARU’s new microsite. The site is based around the timeline of the last few decades and showcases the ARU’s seven rugby statesmen whilst also highlighting some of the great moments in rugby throughout the last 70 years. www.rugby.com.au/builtbyrugby We’ve been busy upgrading our facilities for your convenience and comfort. In the last few months we have repainted, acquired two new comfy couches, got EFTPOS, erected handy shelving here and there, installed a hand dryer for the men’s toilets, bought a new till for the bar and put up an excellent shiny new sign above the bar (for those of us sometimes who forget where we are). Much thanks to the work and generosity of Justin Elder, Stewart Douglas, Beck Derbyshire Lloyd and Sue Thewlis among others.

While on the topic of club upgrades, we’re putting the honour boards back up soon. There will be an important new board devoted to recording the names of people who have played 15 seasons or more of senior rugby for Old Collegians. We’re calling these hallowed souls the “Quindecim” (it’s Latin for fifteen, pronounced Quinn-DEC-um). If you would like to suggest a name for the list, let us know. Those of you who have played with Benny “Bula” Rokobaro or his son Alex who used to play for our junior club will be delighted to hear that Alex (left) is doing very well with his rugby and has been selected to play for Fiji’s Under 20s. Well done! Speaking of international rugby, during the RWC2007 we showed a few of the games at the Club and stayed late into the night celebrating (or drowning sorrows, depending on your perspective) with some traditional Rugby singing. Ian Barwick offers this original ditty for our amusement: You've heard of Hamish Cranna, He flew the England banner. When they played the Scots, He changed his spots, And barracked all he canna.

Lachy Pender has a pair of size 10.5 men’s Asics gel lethal rugby boots for sale, pretty much brand new. Anyone who is keen should email him on [email protected] The Annual Pub Crawl was the usual riotous affair with 40 or so Collegians traipsing through Norwood dressed, for reasons which were obvious at the time, as demented golfers. Best not to dwell on the details, really. Photos were taken. I’m not clear on why they haven’t come to light.

We have had the pleasure of getting to know two Spanish travellers, Nacho and Angel, who played for us in 1

st and 2

nd grade over the last

few weeks in our time of need (see below). There is a clip on our You Tube account of a few moments of their games. They have now headed out into the sunset to continue roaming the globe. Adios, amigos!

April/May is always a hard time of year at Old Collegians. We gave eight of our best players to the Falcons this year, with most other clubs only losing two or three. Add injuries etc and things start to look grim; one weekend we had 28 players unavailable. In this atmosphere, the wins against Uni and Souths have been even sweeter than usual. We are lucky to be able to rely on stalwarts like Jo Suttell and Paull Francis and to be able to promote young talent like Todd Grant and Tom Nutt. Thanks go to everyone who is playing in more than one game every Saturday or playing up a grade (or two). We’re also seeing some old friends return; hooray for Leigh Marsland and Andy Dalton! Leigh showed up to the 4

th grade game against Uni, watched

a rather average first half with disdain, pulled on a pair of boots and took the field with gusto. He rampaged and bellowed around and at the close of the second half the OC team had pulled into the lead, with Leigh urging them on “Come on boys, there’s another half to go - you did #$% ̂all in the first half!”. Later that day, Andy Dalton took the field in the 1

st Grade. Some of

you may not know Dalts; he captained our 1998 1st XV Premiership side. Has he lost anything

in the intervening ten years? Cranna isn’t sure; he could be heard asking Kate Denley “Did you put Viagra in Daltons’ water? Because he’s stiffening up fast.”

Belated congratulations to Christian Tedge and Candice Daniel who were married over summer, with a horde of Collegians in attendance. Congratulations also to Richard Czeglik and Zoë Woodstock who will be very soon welcoming a brand new Collegian to the world. Watch this space for news!

Our love and best wishes go to Mickey Finn who has not been very well. We miss you, Mickey.

Just a reminder that we have a YouTube channel. New videos are generally added on a Sunday night. www.youtube.com/ocrfc In case you’re wondering, yes we do have more players scattered over the globe than usual. Charlie Sheppard (pictured) and Andy Farquharson are in Amsterdam playing for T’Gooi (how do they shout that out from the sideline?), James Hall is in England, and is Henry Nutt (occasionally being refereed by Andrew Schwilk!), Joel Fudali has relocated to Canada, Kate Reynolds is taking a year in London and Tara Naige is a youth ambassador in Tonga. We miss them all. Come home, you shiftless creatures! The results from the House Party are in. Green House was the controversial victor of the boat race, while Gold House won the arm wrestling thanks to the guns of Richard Czeglik and Alex Berce. No points were awarded for the karaoke; we were all dreadful. Old Colls have an Oztag team playing Monday nights at Glenunga Oval. Speak to Kim, Taffy or Brydon if you’d like to join.

OLD COLLEGIANS AGM REPORT 2007

Summary We identif ied six main goals for 2007:

• to keep four competitive men’s teams on the pitch; • to retain the West End Trophy;

• to retain the First Grade premiership; • to improve the performance of the Second Grade;

• to see an increased connection betw een the junior and senior parts of the club; and • to be debt-free by the end of the club-year (post-renovations etc). While w e didn’t retain the First Grade premiership, the rest of these goals w ere achieved. Goals Achieved We again f ielded four senior men’s teams and a w omen’s team and w e are the only club in SA to do so. Thanks go to all players, managers and coaches for their commitment. It is this commitment that led us to retain the West End Trophy for best club for the seventh consecutive year. The West End Trophy is proof that we remain the strongest club in South Australia in terms of participation and development of rugby. We saw our First Grade remain a close knit, loyal and successful unit. Unfortunately, they did not reach their undoubted premiership potential and bow ed out of the competit ion in the semi-f inal against Brighton. I w ould like to thank their managers Hamish Cranna and Harry Clark for their w ork w ith the team, and especially coach Rob Sadler in his f inal year as Head Coach of Old Collegians. While Season 2007 w ill not be remembered for First XV success, it should be celebrated for strong performances in all grades. The First XV, Women’s XV, Second XV and Fourth XV all played in f inals, and in particular the Second XV and Fourth XV played in their respective grand f inals and in both cases were only beaten by very narrow margins. It is w orth noting that the Third and Fourth grades w ere genuine training squads this year, and not the call-around social teams that they have been in the past. I applaud all players for their hard work during 2007 and look forw ard to seeing advancements in 2008. The Club’s renovations of the kitchen and show ers are at last complete. Our eternal thanks go to Mark Pickard of Direct Interiors and to all the clubmen w ho assisted in 2007 in f inishing those w orks. Their generosity of time, materials and funds has made all this possible. We now boast some very, very nice facilities w hich will stand us in good stead for years to come. Thanks to the generosity of a number of people, w e w ere able to fund the renovations with minimum pain. A government grant covered the process of demolition, and much of the cost of the renovations w as borne by the fantastic generosity of Mark Pickard of Direct Interiors. Nevertheless, we had to f ind many thousands of dollars to pay for labour and materials and this w as done by careful belt-tightening and enthusiastic fundraising. My thanks to the senior committee for the former and the w hole club for the latter. We w ere delighted w ith the energy and innovations of the whole Junior Club Committee in 2007. They built on the pre-existing strengths of the junior club and can boast the triple crow n of hugely increased parent participation, very successful fundraising and improved on-f ield results (in particular the Under 18 premiership). On other fronts

• As soon as w e f inished the renovation of the show ers and kitchen, the Heavens sought to test us by smiting the fridge and other beer-related plant and equipment. With the generous assistance of the Feathers w e were eventually able to replace the w orn out equipment and start serving cold beer again.

• Sponsorship continued to be a critical part of the club’s income in order to keep subscriptions dow n

and cover the grow ing costs associated w ith providing rugby and facilities to our members. Several businesses and people provided much needed cash or in-kind sponsorship in 2007, and special thanks must go to Physio Direct, Direct Interiors, The Feathers, Embroidme, Travel on the Parade, Finlaysons, Wealth by Design, Boart Longyear, Pow erloan, Orlando Wyndham, Abbey Rock, How ard Vineyard, Coopers, O’Connell Meats, Dulw ich Bakery, Athlete’s Foot, Champs Sport Store and a number of individual benefactors.

• Senior player numbers remained approximately static. We collected slightly more in subscriptions despite a slight decline in numbers and the now usual discount for early payment. There w as an improvement in the number of players paying their subscriptions across the teams, for w hich we are incredibly grateful.

• Our rugby season, and thus also our social season, were cut short by the Rugby World Cup. We also lost a home game during the Australian Rugby Shield season. While w e generally saw some good days/nights at the club in 2008 we have recorded a drop in bar and canteen profits overall as a result of the shortened season. Thanks go to Curtis Hale and Sue Thew lis who again provided great service behind the bar and at the canteen, w hich together continue to be our greatest sources of income. It w as great to see Sue ably assisted by a number of faces from the junior part of the club, including Jane Wright, Anne Bradley and others.

• We w ere, as usual, dependant on a small group of dedicated volunteers who provided match reports, canteen services, line marking, ground set up and take dow n, cleaning and many other jobs to provide an enjoyable environment for our players and supporters. My especial thanks go to all those w ho perform the mundane, regular duties w hich keep the club going. In particular, my undying admiration and gratitude goes to: o Ted Apted for line marking, ground set up and take dow n, managing the recycling and other

thankless tasks; o Sue Thew lis and all w ho helped her in the canteen. Sue of course does everything else too, and

we would be lost w ithout her. o Rob Sadler, our outgoing First Grade coach and absolute stalw art of the club. o Paul Horne, for his management of the w ebsite whether he’s based in England, India,

Melbourne or Adelaide. o Michael Low e, Bec Manson and Kate Denley, (and their team) w ho provide f irst aid and

physiotherapy support. o Denzil Church, w ho as an adjunct to his role as 2nd XV Manager and Selector also kept records

of games played and players’ injuries w hich made the processes of selection and f inals qualif ication much simpler. Denzil also managed most of our ongoing house and grounds issues, and to my great sorrow I think w e’ve burned him out.

o Edw ard Suttell for manning the scoreboard.

• Thanks to the senior committee. Administration is no-one’s idea of fun, but w ithout it things grind to a halt. o Graham Raymond, Vice President o Sue Thew lis, Secretary o Ian Barrie, Treasurer o Danny McCartan, Director of Rugby o Ted Apted and Denzil Church, Selectors.

In closing, I thank the committee, coaches, managers, volunteers and players for their support and hard work in 2007. Old Collegians remains an amazing, dedicated and delightful group of people and it is a privilege to be a part of the club’s on-going success.

NOTICES

JUNIOR GIRLS’ RUGBY Mixed teams in juniors are currently only offered at the Under 12 level. It has been suggested that the rugby community should band together to try and get an Under 15 girls competition started next year, and get the ball rolling with a couple of tens teams playing initially this year to start promoting numbers. SA Rugby is in the process of identifying funding for a Development Office to facilitate. Contact Kim on [email protected] or 0438 704 415 for details.
