After celebrating the day of Pentecost and
preparing to enter into summer my heart
is filled with gratitude for the many
wonderful things which are happening at Luther
Memorial Church and Academy. I would like to give just
a few updates about some important things that have
happened and will happen.
First, just recently Luther Memorial has upgraded its
security system through a new door locking system and
additional cameras placed at doors entering the building.
Access to the building will no longer be with keys, but
with an electronic card system. The card system allows
us to track access to the building and shut down cards if
lost. The cameras will be used to monitor entrance to the
building as well. The plan was developed and
implemented by a committee which has been looking at
the overall safety of the building.
Second, I am very pleased with the updated sound system
in our main church. We are grateful to Levco
Communications and in particular to John Mazza for the
excellent job they did. Please remember that hearing
assist units are available at the door closest to the pulpit.
If you have questions or need assistance regarding these
units, please just ask Pastor Coleman.
Thirdly, during this summer the roof will be replaced
over the entire school section of our facility. We are
grateful to our property chairman, Rick Kern, for his
efforts on this project and the diligent planning to make
sure the disruption to this ministry is as little as possible.
We are grateful for the generous donation from a family
of Luther Memorial Church to make the new sound
system possible, and for the Property Foundation which
distributed the funds to make the roof replacement
possible. The Property Foundation has received many
generous donations over the years to make this roof work
a reality. It affirms once again our theme at Luther
Memorial “God’s Work. Our Hands.”
Finally, I wanted to share with you some exciting news
that St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church has decided to
merge with Luther Memorial Church. Both executive
councils will be meeting shortly to discuss the details, but
I am most excited about warmly and intentionally
welcoming them into this community of faith and sharing
in ministry as brothers and sisters in Christ. The Holy
Spirit is very much moving among us!

Dave Lay – Dave is a Business Development Specialist at USA Vein Clinics, formerly Circulatory Centers. His 2 ½ year old son, Asher, was baptized at Luther Memorial on March 11. Dave is a chair member with the Erie Chamber of Commerce Chamber Committee. He enjoys sailing and spending time with Asher.
Jean & Don Tatar – Originally from Pittsburgh, Jean and Don moved to Erie four years ago. For many years, Jean and Don worked together in the same company. Don continues to work with the Pittsburgh based company in design, build and remodeling. Jean has retired from interior design with the company. They have a son and two grandchildren who live in Erie. They enjoy antiquing and reclaiming furniture.

Memorial Money
Luther Memorial Church is grateful for memorial money given to this ministry in memory of a loved one who dies. When memorial money is used we like to let the families know the money is being used and how. As noted by Pastor Coleman on his front page article, Luther Memorial Church and Academy has upgraded security through new locks and cameras. Church Council approved the use of Memorial Funds to pay for this work. Vacation Bible School

Sunday Morning Classes
Sunday morning classes for adults and our youth will take a vacation during the summer months, but we hope to continue to see everyone each Sunday morning for worship. Classes will resume in September.
Thank you to all of our teachers for a wonderful year of learning.
Thank you also to Pastor Coleman, Pastor Moran, Pastor Washill and Walt Gaber for teaching the Adult Spiritual Growth classes. The classes have been very informative, and we look forward to beginning again in September.
Confirmation at Camp Lutherlyn
Luther Memorial Church’s confirmation class will be attending Confirmation Camp at Lutherlyn from June 17 to June 22. Luther Memorial Church has 15 youth attending and will join together with other congregational youth from the Northwest Pennsylvania Synod. Lutherlyn is a ministry of the Northwestern PA Synod and is sustained by the offerings of so many wonderful servants. We also
wanted to give a word of thanks to the parents who have encouraged their youth to attend and to so many wonderful sponsors for our youth to attend camp.
Luther Memorial continues to be blessed by so many warm and generous hearts.

Music in Worship
Bach Cantata Vespers
Thank you to all who contributed to the Bach Cantata Vespers for the celebration of the Ascension of Our Lord on May 10. Our choir, which was augmented by a few choristers from the Erie area, practiced many extra hours to prepare their music. Soloists for the Bach cantata included Molly Gaber (soprano), Mary Laver (alto), Jonathan Moser (tenor) and Dennis TeCulver (bass). Worship leaders included Pastors Coleman, Kim Hirsch and Kristen Papson and Pastoral Assistant Ron King. We offer a special "thank you" to Les Fobes and
"his crew" for organizing and hosting the reception which followed the service and which was financed by a Thrivent Action Project. Jeanne Gaber and Shannon McAdoo provided post-rehearsal snacks for the cho ir each Sunday. And, as always, the "behind-the-scenes" services of Pat Bellingham, Norma Buerk, Brian Hubbard, Greg Kern, Charlie Lintelman, Mark Lechner and Miriam Scheid are much appreciated. Finally, thank you to all of the financial supporters of the LM Concert Series who have made it possible to present these programs each season.
Summer Worship Music
The Luther Memorial choir and handbell choir will rest during the summer months. A small choir will continue to sing most Sundays, but there are also opportunities for vocal and instrumental solos. Erie Chamber Orchestra
Many of you are aware that Erie has lost a 40-year old fixture of its musical arts community. Gannon University decided to discontinue support of the Erie Chamber Orchestra (ECO) at the end of the 2017-2018 season. This orchestra was founded by Bruce Morton Wright with a vision of providing orchestral m usic within the city of Erie at no charge to those attending.
During the recent history of the Erie Chamber Orchestra, the LM Concert Series frequently hosted ECO concerts and recitals. Both ECO orchestral musicians and aud ience members often commented that Luther
Memorial was an apt venue for this music due to the acoustics, size and location of our church and our long-standing support of the arts.
A small group of individuals interested in preserving this local treasure are now pursuing options for reinstituting a chamber orchestra that would continue to provide free concerts to the community. Cantor Walt Gaber is working with that group and, with the support of the Luther Memorial council, has offered our church as the venue for their concerts during the 2018-2019 season. The new orchestra has yet to be given a name, but it will be presented as being "in residence at Luther Memorial."
If you are interested in this new venture and would like to help it succeed, please consider the following ways that you can participate and contribute:
1. Attend the first concert of the new orchestra at 2:00pm Sunday, August 19 on the grounds of the WQLN studios (8425 Peach Street).
2. Make a financial donation to the LM Concert Series to assist with the costs of hosting the new orchestra in our church.
3. Express your interest in helping with concert hosting responsibilities (greeting, handing out programs, answering questions, etc.) by contacting Walt Gaber or the church office.
4. Invite a friend or family member to attend the concerts that will be offered beginning this autumn.

Monastery of the Heart
Magic Fingers Grace Group
Do you know that the Magic Fingers Grace Knitting Group of Luther Memorial Church is a group of about 20 women who meet the second and fourth Tuesday of each month to get together to knit and socialize? Pastor likes to say we have too much fun and raise the roof off the top of the church with our joy and laughter.
We knit Prayer Crosses that are kept in a basket at UPMC Hamot on the 6th floor Oncology Unit for patients to take for comfort, strength and support when going through their treatments. Prayer crosses are also in a basket in the NICU Unit at UPMC for families who need comfort and support while with their babies who are having difficulty. Prayer Crosses have been given to the Pastoral Liaison at UPMC who shares them with ministers to give to their patients when they visit them in the hospital.
We make Prayer Shawls, NICU hats and blankets, as well as mittens and winter hats for the children at Bethany Outreach Center and McKinley School. We make lap blankets, and baby blankets for newborns of the church. All these beautiful gifts are made with love and prayers with each stitch.
If you love to knit and want to meet a wonderful community of ladies - WE WELCOME YOU. It is a very diversified age group; from young to senior. We would love to have you join us. Thank You to Magic Fingers
Personally speaking, I was glad to have a prayer square to give a dying and lonely patient in the MICU last week. No One Dies Alone volunteers were keeping her company as her family had all pretty much abandoned her. She could nod and had good movement of one hand (which she used to tell us what she needed) that I held a ton. I put a pretty lilac colored pocket cross in that good hand for her to hold and I know she appreciated it, having read the attached note to
her. She was a Christian woman and passed away on Saturday. Praise the Lord she is now free from illness and tubes and the confines of a hospital bed she spent four long weeks in! Thanks be to God, too, for the lovely lady from Luther Memorial Church who knitted the small sweet gift we gave to the patient!

OWLS – Older Wiser Lutherans
Did you know we have a group of adults called the OWLS which means Older Wiser Lutherans? We meet once a month to enjoy a time of informal fellowship and getting to know one another. We love to go to lunch at different restaurants, enjoy various programs and speakers that come to our church, and visit interesting areas of interest in Erie. The OWLS are a great mix of the early and late service parishioners.
We meet the third Wednesday of each month and the upcoming events are listed in the weekly bulletin and monthly Parish Banner.

Did You Hit Your Head?
The spring and summer seasons are here and that means people, especially children, are involved in outdoor activities. Unfortunately, this may also mean that they can be involved in an accident. Some of these incidences may involve hitting their head causing a concussion. This article is important not only for families with children involved in sports or just being active, but for any adult too. A concussion can happen to anyone.
A concussion is a type of brain injury that involves short loss of normal brain function. It happens when a hit to the head or body causes your head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in your brain. Sometimes it can even stretch and damage the brain cells.
They are sometimes referred to as a “mild” brain injury. It is important to realize that when they occur they may not be life threatening, but they are still serious.
Concussions are usually thought of as only sports related. Other causes include blows to the head, bumping your head in a fall, being violently shaken (shaken baby syndrome), car accidents, or even sustaining a fall during dance class or gymnastics. This happened to the granddaughter of my friend. She fell in dance class and hit her head. It took 3 years of seeing many Doctors and all kinds of treatments till her parents found the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program in Pittsburgh. She has completed the treatment program and finally feels her normal self after many years of misery.
It is recommended that if your child plays sports, dance or gymnastics that they have the IMPACT Baseline Concussion Testing. This test can be done locally and many schools/coaches are having their players do this testing. I’m not sure about gymnastics, dancing or even cheerleading programs that are recommending this testing. Talking to their instructors and your family doctor about this testing would be advantageous to your child’s brain heath.
Symptoms of concussion don’t always start right away. They may take days or weeks after the injury to become evident. The symptoms may include, but are not limited to:
• Headaches • Neck pain • Nausea and or vomiting • Ringing in the ears/ blurred vision
• Dizziness balance problems • Tiredness • Concentration problems/ memory loss
The recommendation used to be-don’t let the person sleep. Now sleep and rest are good for brain healing. Waking the person every 2-3 hours initially is important to check their awareness and level of consciousness. Physical activities or activities that involve concentration, studying, computers, phones, tablets, television, and video games should be avoided. Doing these things may make the symptoms come back or get worse. Many students who have sustained a concussion will have to miss some school time and even return on a limited schedule.
As a parent you should be aware of the signs and symptoms and proper treatment for concussions. Too many people shrug it off as just a “stunner or a knock to the head”. As an adult or adult caregiver to an elderly person, be aware of the increase incidence of falls and possibility of the occurrence of concussions. They may say they are “fine” and don’t even realize they hit their head, so they should be watched.
For many years the long term effects of repeated concussions were not known, or were ignored. Now people who have experienced repeated hits to the head, concussions, and traumatic brain injuries may end up with CTE- Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. This may lead to Parkinson’s disease, dementia or other neurologic conditions. There is a movement among retired pro-athletes to prohibit children from starting to play contact sports at younger ages. I heard one retired football player say he was prohibiting his grandson from playing contact sports till he was 16 when the brain is more fully developed. There are also recommendations to not lead with your head and play “heads up ball”. I have also heard they are limiting the “headers” which young children do in soccer. Teaching safe playing to young athletes will save their brains. Tell your child no matter what sport they play they need to immediately report to the coach or instructors any type of hit to the head. Prevention and early treatment is of the utmost importance.

Erie Gives Day 2018
YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO HELP A NON-PROFIT
TUESDAY, AUGUST 14, 2018 8:00AM – 8:00PM 12 HOURS OF GIVING
Day and Time: The event takes place on August 14. You have 12 hours to make your donation between the hours of 8:00am and 8:00pm.
Participating Nonprofits: Your organization must be a 501(c)(3) and either be a member of The Nonprofit Partnership or have an Agency Endowment with the Erie Community Foundation to participate in Erie Gives. Luther Memorial Church, Luther Memorial Academy and Bethany Outreach Center appreciate your support.
Gift Amount: The minimum gift is $25. There is no limit to the amount of money you may give. There is no limit to the number of organizations you can donate to in a transaction.
Making a Donation: Simply log on to www.eriegives.org or call the Erie Community Foundation at 454-0843.
Credit Cards: Only Visa, MasterCard and Discover will be accepted. The credit card processor charges a nominal fee per transaction. The Erie Community Foundation does not receive any fees. (Credit card gift cards will not be accepted.)
Prorated Match: The Erie Community Foundation and our sponsors will enhance each donor’s gift by providing a prorated match to each gift made to a nonprofit.
Your Receipt: You will receive an email receipt of your gift; please retain it for tax purposes. Unless you choose to remain anonymous, your donor information will be sent to the appropriate organizations.
When the Nonprofits receive your donation: The organizations will receive your donation plus The Erie Community Foundation’s prorated match on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at our Erie Gives Check Distribution Day.
May Council Minutes
1. The minutes of the April 10 council meeting were unanimously accepted. The Treasurer’s Report was reviewed by Greg Kern and on motion unanimously accepted.
2. Thank you notes received from Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and Inter-Church Ministries were shared by Pastor Coleman.
3. Ann Flick noted that St. Peter Cathedral is celebrating their 125th anniversary this year with a Gala on June 30. A motion was made to contribute two (2) $50 gift certificates from Stan’s Garden Center to this celebration; motion carried unanimously.
4. Emergency Task Force – An update was given on the keypads and doors being operational. The system seems to be working well; additional items need to be installed. The next meeting will include a walk throughout the building to assess safety issues.
5. Roof Repair – Rick Kern shared that a June 2018 date is projected to begin the roof repair previously approved by Church Council. If the weather cooperates, the project could be completed during June and July.
6. Visioning for LMC – Those serving on this committee at this time are Sandy Barbaro, Pastor Coleman, Ken Kraut and Jack Tell.
7. St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church – Pastor Coleman provided an update sharing that once the church building sells; St. Matthew’s council is hopeful this will occur over the summer, a transition could occur sometime in the fall or early winter.
8. Sound System – The recording microphones currently used are not very high quality. At the recommendation by John Mazza it is suggested that we purchase two (2) new recording microphones for $60 each. On motion, this was unanimously approved.
9. A reminder was given of the Church Council meeting on June 12 at 7:00pm.

Third Grade News
The third grade would like to send out a HUGE lion’s roar to Adison Prothero-Rivera. Adison and her mom made small stuffed food items from felt and sold them for $1.00 each. They reminded the kids of Shopkins and they were a big hit. During the months of April and May Adison and her mom sewed and stuffed over 150 of the "softie food" items. Together with donations and the selling of the softies, Adison gave a check to the Erie Cancer Center for $200. We are very proud of Adison for her love and caring nature and putting other's needs above her own. Well done Adison.

We are incredibly grateful to our newest and tiniest donor, Adison Prothero-Rivera. Adison and her mother, Lynzie Prothero stopped by the center to drop off a $200 donation. Adison raised the money by making felt food and selling them at her school, Luther Memorial Academy. What a sweet and generous gesture, thank you Adison!
Lego News
The LMA FIRST Lego Robotic team is looking for new members for the 2018/2019 school year. The team has 7 spots available. A letter of interest went home with all the students who are currently in grades 3 to 7. New team members will be accepted onto the team if they are able to attend all or most of the practices from August to December. The team meets every Thursday from 5:30-7:30pm and every Saturday from 10:00am-3:30pm. Interested students will also be permitted on team if their final grades were "C"'s or better and their behavior
meets with LMA standards.

Preparation for 2018/2019

Teacher In-Service Last Day!!
Tuition Procedure for 2018/2019
School tuition payments will continue to be processed by Vanco Services, a company endorsed by Thrivent Financial, for the 2018/2019 school year. The cost for this service is paid by the school, which is much better than the $36 fee charged to each family by the FACTS program.
The tuition will either be deducted from your checking account, savings account, or charged to a credit card. If the credit card option is chosen, you will be responsible for a 4% fee.
The authorization form will be included in your tuition letter for 2018/2019 and the form is due to the school office before June 15.
Parents have the option of making tuition payments over a 10 or 12 month period.

Payments
MILK MONEY: 2% chocolate or white milk is available each day. The first semester milk money payment will be due in August. You are welcome to pay by semester for a discounted rate of $36 per student or yearly, $72 per student. The cost per carton is 50 cents.
TUITION BREAK: If you are responsible for a new student(s) attending LMA, your final tuition payment for that year (May) will be waived. Sometimes word of mouth is our best advertising!! If you know a family thinking of changing schools, let them know about us!!

The school office will be open Monday, June 11 – Friday, June 22 from 9:00am – 1:00pm.
The office will be closed for summer vacation Monday, June 25 – July 31.
The office will reopen on Wednesday, August 1 for the remainder of the summer from 8:00am – 12:00 noon.
