(Headteacher)The vision in leading Parkside to the successes its students, staff and stakeholders deserve is based upon fundamental principles which are;

To maximise student potential and outcomes through quality teaching and learning.

To embed inclusive education for all. To raise aspirations for all stakeholders, staff, students, parents and

Governors. To secure a safe and happy learning environment. To make Parkside a beacon of the community and the outstanding school it

has the potential to become.

Comments from Ofsted (November 2016)‘The quality of teaching, behaviour and achievement are much better than they were 2 years ago’ ‘Across a broad range of subjects, pupils currently in the school are making good progress’ ‘A broad and balanced curriculum enables pupils to study a range of courses at GCSE level’ ‘Students are very appreciative of the level of personalised support they receive from subject teachers. Detailed written and verbal feedback make a strong contribution to their learning’  The purpose of this booklet is to help you think about the subjects you want to study during Years 10 and 11. Through discussions with your parents/carers, subject teachers, Progress Leader and Form Tutor you need to decide on subjects that will suit you. It is also important to keep your options open for further study beyond age 16 and for your career progression routes.

“An introduction for students and parents/carers”At Parkside School we believe in providing a challenging and broad based aspirational curriculum that offers pathways to meet learners’ needs and interests. All students will follow a core curriculum of GCSE English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Science leading to 5 GCSEs. In addition, students must continue to study Core PE as part of promoting an active, healthy lifestyle, as well as GCSE Religious Studies or BTEC Travel and Tourism (which includes the elements of PSHCE).

In addition to this students will make 3 options choices. However, the combination of choices will be influenced by which pathway you follow. We want you to choose courses which will extend your knowledge and skills, courses you will find interesting and challenging whilst offering you realopportunities for success. They should help meet your career needs and aspirations, and support your progression into Post-16 at Parkside, onto College or into Modern Apprenticeships or training. You must not choose courses simply because your friends are taking them, or because you like a particular teacher! School and staff will work closely with students and families to make sure option choices are appropriate and give maximum opportunity to success for our students.

GCSE’s and equivalent qualifications are an important stepping stone to the next stage of your education and must be taken seriously. All further education courses will require GCSE and /or equivalent qualifications. To enter the Sixth Form at Parkside School, you will be required to achieve 5 good GCSEs, including maths and English, at grade 5; A-level subjects also have subject specific criteria. Consequently, it is important that you follow an appropriate pathway and choose a combination of subjects which will maximise your chances of success.

Explaining the QualificationsGCSE (Level 2)

GCSE examinations are set by different awarding bodies. Syllabuses have been chosen from a variety of Examination Groups to meet students’ needs.

Examinations are designed to enable students to demonstrate what they know, understand and can do (knowledge recall and application).

Grades range from 9 – 1. Grade 5 and above is considered a ‘strong’ pass. Equivalent QualificationsBTEC (Level 2):

BTECs are a range of qualifications which have been firmly established in education for many years. They are an exciting but equivalent pathway through education and are nationally recognised by both employers and universities.

These qualifications offer a vocational pathway for students. They provide total flexibility for progression to ‘A’ Level/Advanced

Vocational ‘A’ Level Studies and to Level 3 BTEC qualifications. Students complete core units which are compulsory and specialist units. BTEC courses are heavily based on coursework and continuous

assessment; all courses do have an examination component as part of the course.

OCR / Cambridge Nationals (Level 2): These qualifications are for students who have an interest in vocationally-

related learning. They do not involve exams and are based on continual assessment and the

completion of portfolios of work.

AssessmentAssessment takes place in all subjects throughout your course of study. Formal assessment for the purpose of external examination in most subjects is carried out in the following ways: 1. Final examinations 2. Controlled assessment 3. Modular tests in some subjectsFor more information regarding assessment, refer to individual subject pages.

Changes to GCSE GradingFrom summer 2019, all GCSE subjects will be graded 9 - 1.How does the numerical system work? There are 9 numerical grades with grade 9 being

the highest.

Offsite provisionThere are a number of level 2 courses delivered by Keighley College. Studentswho are interested will need to attend the college taster day. These options willbe subject to the course being appropriate for the students and to Keighley

College running the option.

We hope to provide the subjects you choose. However, sometimes this is not possible e.g. if more students choose a subject than we have teachers for; if too few students choose a subject to make it financially viable to run, or if we cannot fit the particular combination you choose on the timetable. If, when final choices are confirmed we cannot provide the subject choices you want we will take your reserve preference into account and talk to you about alternatives. As well as giving you the opportunity to discuss it with parents / carers.

PathwaysIt is important that your option choices provide a broad and balanced curriculum. Study a range of subjects that will keep open a wide range of possibilities for the future; one day you might want to completely change direction from the ideas you have now. Pathways aim to guide you towards an appropriate range of courses that will bring you success at the end of Year 11 and offer progression to post-16 study. The Pathways structure also aims to ensure that individual needs are met. You will be guided to follow one of the Pathways shown below:

Pathway AThe English Baccalaureate (Ebacc) is not a stand-alone qualification but is recognition that a student has studied a set range of five GCSEs as part of their Year 10/11 studies. These must be in GCSE English and Mathematics, two Science qualifications, a Language and either History or Geography. To achieve the EBacc, students must gain a minimum of grade 5 in all of these subject areas. For some students the EBacc qualifications may be an appropriate basic set of options, however, consideration must be given to expected levels of progress and attainment, individual learning styles and the suitability of this combination of subjects for all.

Pathway BA mixture of Core subjects, optional GCSE or BTEC subjects including vocational courses taken in school or college. This can lead to Sixth Form study at school, college or employer-based training; including Apprenticeships.
