Brother Knights, June is the

month when we celebrate

some very special days. June 7 is

the Feast of Corpus Christi—the

Body of Christ. We give thanks

to God for letting us, His beloved

children born into His loving

embrace in Baptism, be fed by

the divine presence—Body and

Blood, Soul and Divinity—of

His only begotten Son, our Lord,

Jesus Christ.

By sharing this heavenly food,

we are cared for, strengthened,

and equipped for ministry by our

God. Nothing Jesus asks us to do

is impossible, because He is with

us and works within us!

Another reminder of this great

divine power is the Feast of the

Sacred Heart of Jesus on June

12. The Sacred Heart reminds

us that God’s great Love (the

meaning of the symbol of the

heart) is there for us at all times,

and how God is always drawing

us to the love of His Heart.

Then there is Father’s Day on

June 21—an opportunity for

us to thank God for our own

fathers, as well as for enabling us

to be fathers to our own children.

WHAT A PRIVILEDGE! Being

a father to children is to share

in the loving concern God the

Father has for all His children.

As fathers, you model that love

and concern and make it real in

your families. This is always a

challenge, but—given the first

two feasts I just wrote about—

we are equipped to meet this

challenge and be Christ for our

families, communities, and the

world.

The love of God makes all things

possible!

You are in my prayers and

Masses; have a great June.

Brothers, as we close this Fraternal Year, we can take a moment to be proud of Patapsco Council’s accomplishments. We have given nearly $20,000 to charity, including Food for the Needy, services for autistic citizens, and Catholic School

Scholarships, among others. We also assisted the Pregnancy Center West and St. Agnes Hospital Breast Cancer Center by donating our hall for their major fundraisers. These, and countless other acts of service, are a testimony to your dedication as Knights. I am proud to be your Grand Knight, and I look forward to even more activity from our new Knights, and maybe some of you who haven’t been active and now find some time to give to God’s Work in the new Fraternal Year.June brings two major events for our Council: The Fabulous Fifties Sock Hop and our Third Annual Catonsville “Four Miles for Charity” Run. Thanks to John Reardon for chairing the Sock Hop, which will be held on Flag Day, June 14, at the Council Home. Our tireless fundraiser, Deputy Grand Knight Bernie Wrisk, is the chair for the June 27 Charity Run, which is always in need of helpers for checking in runners, marshalling the course, etc. Please plan to help out if you can. These two events will help us fill out the bank accounts to begin our new Fraternal Year in sound fiscal shape, so our full support is a must! I will close once again with the words of our Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson: each Brother has a moral obligation to offer membership in our Order to each Catholic man he knows. I firmly believe that our work and our brotherhood serves the People of God in so many ways, but perhaps the most personal—and therefore fundamental—is the strengthening of the faith of our Brother Knights. The bonds we share in our work, and the prayerful way we approach it, are a foundation for us when we are tempted to be lazy or lukewarm in our lives of faith. May the Fire of the Holy Spirit ignite us all to take steadfast action in defense of our Faith, our Priests, our Church, and in the propagation of the Faith through our work. Make a point TODAY to share our work with a Catholic man and invite him to join our Order. Vivat Jesus!

Deputy Grand Knight Bernie Wrisk

Last month I had a first time experience in helping build a new home for a family in need through Habitat for Humanity. My efforts were fueled by the Holy Spirit, who was driving my passion to help others more in need than me. I actually got

to work alongside two of the new home owners. The work was well guided by many experienced volunteers from AmeriCorps. I’d like to help again and take some brother Knights with me. There are two Saturdays in July (18, 25) in which we could specifically benefit my coworker’s family. Please contact me ASAP at [email protected] if you would like to join me or plan for another date to help. We need to reserve our dates in advance before others take them. If you are not able to join me, please consider supporting this one particular family through their website: gofundme.com/amorganelmo.

Finally, I truly enjoyed myself at my first State Convention in OC back in May. It was fun building our fraternal bonds with each other and many family members, as well as meeting and learning from so many other Councils.

Vivat Jesus!

DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT

CHANCELLOR’S REPORT

John Journell

I lead our Rosary Team, which meets to pray the Rosary wherever requested, such as funerals and memorial services. Saint Pope John Paul II said, “The Rosary of the Virgin Mary...is a prayer loved by countless Saints and encouraged by the Magisterium. Simple yet profound,

it still remains, at the dawn of this third millennium, a prayer of great significance, destined to bring forth a harvest of Holiness.” The Rosary is a very powerful weapon that we all need to be saying in one voice. As the Blessed Pope Pius IX stated, “If I had an army to say the Rosary, I could conquer the world.” Let’s all pull out our Rosaries in daily prayer, let us honor and ask for help from our Blessed Mother, and please join our Rosary Team to honor our Blessed Mother and those who request our presence when they need the power of the Rosary the most in their lives. Send an email to me and I will make sure you will receive notice of when and where we are needed. Finally, notify me if you know of anybody who would like to have our Rosary Team in attendance.

B rothers and Patapsco Council family: This month ends the Columbian year, which was a successful one for Patapsco Council. We received some recognition

at the Ocean City Convention, not the least of which was a nice First Place finish for this PK newsletter. Congratulations to all of those who participated and supported Council activities this past year. I want to especially thank all those who were Program chairman this past year—good job Brothers. On Wednesday, May 28, Council Elections took place with the current leadership being re-elected. Let us all thank them for a year well done and pledge our support to

them to continue the momentum built last year and see some more new ideas and programs. Again, I call upon Brothers to share their thoughts and ideas so we can have strong Council leadership, as well as a relevant, innovative, and growing Patapsco Council. Summer should have some great activities, so look for info in the PK and stay active. Next year we need more young members to help our demographics—let’s go for Star Council! Keep up the prayers for those threatened with religious violence worldwide, and for our men and women in uniform. Don’t miss the Charity Run in June. Crabs are coming in July! Mary, Queen of Knights, pray for us.

Church (PGK Michael Doetzer)Many thanks to all who helped out with the St Joseph Monastery/Council Annual Chicken Dinner, held on April 26. It was a real nice event with over 125 meals served. Remember the Parish and the Council will team up again for the annual crab feast. This year it will be held on September 27. Tickets will be available August 1. Save the Date!

Community (Jacob Luco)4th of July Celebration: Join us in the best seats at the parade (shaded or not). Food and Drinks will available from 11:30 am – 4:30 pm, and the bar will be open in the Knights Out Inn.

Council (PGK Dennis Brose)Our 2nd annual “Fabulous 50’s Sock Hop” will take place at the Council Hall on Sunday, June 14, from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. Music will be provided by the “Big Bopper.” The menu will feature Hamburger Sliders, Hot Dogs, Roast Beef Sandwiches, and French Fries with Gravy. Beer, Wine, and Soda (Cash Bar) will be served. There will be prizes for the Best Dressed and a Hula Hoop Contest. Tickets are $25. If you have any questions, call the Council office at 410-744-8754, John Reardon (Chairman) at 443-415-0684, or Peggy Baldwin at 410-299-8586. You can get in on the marquee raffle of the Sock Hop even if you can’t attend the event on June 14. The prize is a one-month family membership at Rolling Road Golf Club, worth over $600. The raffle tickets go for $5 each or 5 for $20. You can buy the tickets at the Knights Out Inn on Fridays.

Culture of Life (Tim McCarthy)As the 40 Days for Life Spring prayer battle ends, we report 10,000 children saved, 107 abortion workers who quit, and 60 abortion facilities closed forever. The program began in 2005 and now includes more than 650,000 participants around the world. God IS listening.

Youth (David Slade)Summer is here. Let us pray for a safe and happy season for our young people.

Family (DGK Bernie Wrisk)A Night Out with Mom back in May was a success. Thanks to our WGK Scott Luco and some of his family members, DGK Bernie Wrisk, Paul Buckley, Ed Schmitt, John Reardon, Ed and Joann Fuller, Ron Graul, Mike Karpers, Dave Quigly, PGK Warren Norris, PGK Mike Doetzer, and Tim McCarthy for making it a nice community and family event. We honored moms and our Council Police Officer of the Year Mohammed Goff, and we raised money for the Linwood Autism program as well as our other charities and activities. We served 65 paying guests, and—to top it off—we signed a new member.

Charity (DGK Bernie Wrisk)The 3rd annual 4 Miles for Charity Run is set for Saturday, June 27. Sign up now and spread the word to get family and friends to join you in this fun exercise around our beautiful community. Sign up at runningmaryland.com. If not participating in that exercise, let your DGK know if you can volunteer, as it takes many hands on that morning to pull off this BIG event. You could also join our flyer distribution committee over the month of June. Our next planning meeting will be following our Business meeting on Wednesday, June 10. You can get in on the marquee raffle of the Charity Run even if not attending the event. Prize is a 6-month family membership at any YMCA in Central MD—worth over $600. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20 and are sold at KOI or Council meetings.

Back in May, we had a dine-out fundraiser at Bare Bones in Ellicott City. Thanks to the nine Brother Knights who showed up and brought their families and friends—it was reported to us that we increased the establishment’s normal business by $1,000. The management sent us a check for $300. We also got our name out in the community by advertising and selling off the remaining 3 Silent Auction framed sports photos from our Night Out with Mom. The next Dine Out event will be at Peace A Pizza on June 24. Please share with all to go to 15 Mellor Ave in Catonsville between 4:00 and 8:00 pm and mention the Knights of Columbus when they check out—we will earn 20% of the proceeds. I know this is also an Officers/Lecturer night, but hopefully everyone can eat prior to arriving at our meeting. Any suggestions for future Dine Out establishments can be directed to DGK Bernie Wrisk.

Fourth Degree (Ernie Schaefer)The next meeting will take place on June 25 at St. Agnes Council, Frederick Road, Catonsville.

Membership (PGK Warren Norris)Brothers, please plan to join us at the Council Home on Wednesday, June 3, at 7:30 pm. We will share wings, beverages, and fraternal fellowship as we watch the Orioles play the Astros on the big screen in the Club Room. And it’s FREE! This is a recruiting event for our final push to make Star Council, so please bring a Catholic Man who might like to join our Council and join us in our work. Each brother has a moral obligation to offer membership in our order to every qualified Catholic man he knows. Pick one or more that you know will be seriously interested and invite them personally. GK Scott Luco would like to get to know them. See you there!

It is often not convenient to be pro-life. A good seafood restaurant and an automobile insurance company I’d supported for 30 years turned out to

be Planned Parenthood supporters. I wrote them both respectful letters opting out of their services because of their abortion support.By the following year, I learned that both of them abandoned their support for abortion. Obviously, there were others who were writing the same kind of letters.

It is said that the larger companies fear boycotts more than they fear lawsuits. Boycotts change the fiscal bottom line-right away. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. used to say, “Boycott Alabama buses.”A publication called Life Decisions International challenges the Culture of Death. They monitor closely all organizations who contribute to the death of our unborn children.

SPENDING PRO-LIFECo-Editor Tim McCarthy

Patapsco Council Named Police Officer of the Year: Officer Mohammed GoffOur police are the cornerstone of democracy. When we are victims of crime they are the first to respond. In traffic accidents they protect our rights and determine responsibilities. Often, they perform services for us that we could not perform for ourselves. Though we honor one man tonight we express our appreciation for all the Men and women in Blue.

The Patapsco Council of the Knights of Columbus have chosen Officer Mohammed Goff as Officer of the Year.

In 2014 Officer Goff made 11 arrests for drunk driving and cleared 83 serious traffic cases.

He has a Bachelor’s Degree from Towson University with a double major in computer information systems and business administration.

For these and other achievements we are pleased to name Officer Mohammed Goff the Catonsville Officer of the year.

Open your hearts, little children, so that God may fill you with His love and you will be a joy to others. Your witness will be powerful and everything you do will be interwoven with God’s tenderness. I am with you and I pray for you and your conversion until you put God in the first place. Our council recognizes Steve Lauer and his family as our Family of the Month. Steve and his wife, Amy, are raising their children—Matthew, Abigail, and Daniel—in the Catholic faith as parishioners of St Mark. Both Steve and Amy volunteer their time to coach their kids’ sports teams. Family time is important to the Lauers,

and they also try to spend much of it with their extended family as well throughout the year.

Please suggest future Family of the Month candidates to Bernie Wrisk via e-mail at [email protected] or call (443) 604-8372.

FAMILY OF THE MONTH

Knight’s Prayer

Our Lady, Queen of the Knights, bless all the activities of our Order. Keep us true to our pledge, to extend the kingship of thy divine son on earth. Through Thine intercession, win for us the grace, ever to exemplify in our public and private lives, the virtues that should characterize those especially dedicated to the service of the heavenly court. Make us always aware that as your Knights, we are constantly observed, our faith judged, and our Order appreciated. Accept, O Mary, this renewed pledge of fealty and devotion, of Thy Servants, the Knights of Columbus.

Please remember the following people in your prayers.

If you have any prayer intentions for someone in your family, please contact Chancellor John Journell to get the person’s name included in our prayers. You may also fill out a prayer request form on our Council website. We believe in the power of prayer and would be happy to include your family members in our prayers. You can send your prayer requests to John via e-mail at [email protected].

For the third consecutive year, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson joined nearly 200 military veterans, active service personnel and volunteers sponsored through the Archdiocese for the Military Services and Knights of Columbus during the 57th International Military Pilgrimage to Lourdes, France, May 15-18.

Prior to the start of the international ceremonies, the American pilgrims were welcomed at a Mass celebrated on Thursday, May 14, at the shrine’s Rosary Basilica. In his homily, Bishop F. Richard Spencer, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Military Services and the episcopal vicar for Europe and Asia, shared the significance of the pilgrimage site which has been “a place of pilgrimage for over a hundred years.”

He asked the pilgrims, many of whom were wounded after serving in combat and military duty, to continue to “heed our Blessed Mother’s call to conversion of heart so that the world might be a better place for all.”

Supreme Knight Carl Anderson expressed similar sentiments in an address to this year’s pilgrims, as he encouraged the pilgrims to “prayerfully seek God through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother, the celebration of the sacraments and fellowship with military personnel from countries throughout the world.

“Our commitment to veterans and active-duty military personnel has never wavered,” Supreme Knight Anderson continued. “We not only provide spiritual support and catechesis to members of our Armed Services, but we also offer scholarship programs for seminarians who will serve as military chaplains. Beginning in 2014, the Knights of Columbus partnered with the Gary Sinise Foundation to help provide custom-built homes for severely wounded veterans. In addition, countless individual Knights volunteer their time to Veterans Affairs Voluntary Services programs throughout the country.”

Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services was the homilist and main celebrant for Friday’s Mass welcoming

the international pilgrims. The archbishop was accompanied by several military chaplains, including eight Catholic priests, to further meet the spiritual needs of the pilgrims.

Following the opening Mass, the American pilgrims and volunteer joined veterans from other countries at various ceremonies, prayer services, military band concerts and processions. Among the Knights of Columbus volunteers were Supreme Master Dennis Stoddard and Assistant to the Supreme Knight for Military and Veterans Affairs Col. Chuck Gallina.

The pilgrimage is the latest chapter in the Order’s long history of providing hospitality and spiritual resources for military members. During the First World War, the Knights of Columbus Army Hut program assisted members of the military throughout Europe. Immediately following the end of the war, the Order organized the first-ever international military pilgrimage to the Marian shrine at Lourdes.

Since then, the Knights have helped sponsor war relief activities and programs for veterans.

SUPREME COUNCIL NEWS

STATE COUNCIL NEWSTHE FRATERNAL YEAR IS NOT OVER YETBryan Adamczyk, State Membership Director, Maryland State Council

My Brother Knights,

Well here we are, in the twilight of the Fraternal Year. But the year is not over. We still have this month before our year is over. This is not the time to simply coast in and drift to the finish line. Rather, I challenge you to take that role that you began this fraternal year with and charge across the finish line just as hard and as fast as ever.

I offer my congratulations to the winners at the State Convention, but know to me you are all winners in my book already as I am already greatly appreciative of all we have already done. I know we still have some gas left in the tank and I know we can prove we are a top council in the Order.

Mary Queen of the Knights Pray for Us.

BALTIMORE CHAPTEROF GRAND KNIGHTS

J U N E 2 0 1 5 S C H E D U L E

For most of us, the idea of not working is an exciting one. We relish weekends and vacations. We look forward to holidays and special occasions.

We plan for retirement and count down the number of days until we arrive at that freedom that we have planned for so deliberately.

But what if the end of work comes not with freedom, but with surprise? What if the end of work comes with an illness or an accident that prevents us from doing our job? Will we be prepared? Can we be?

With the help of the Knights of Columbus, members and their families can.

We welcome retirement because we have planned for it. We know when it is coming, we know what it will take to get there, and we know what we will need when it arrives. But how can we plan for something unexpected? How can we know what we will need when we do not know what will happen?

Disability insurance is often dismissed by working men and women because they think it will never happen to them. Their jobs are fairly safe. Their lives are fairly healthy. Disability — they say — is simply something they will never experience.

The statistics tell a different story.

According to the United States government, a staggering 1 in 4 of today’s 20-year-olds will become disabled before reaching the age of 67. The nature of the job is irrelevant. According to the Social Security Administration, 95 percent of all disabling illnesses and accidents happen outside of the workplace.

Consider a typical male, age 35, a non-smoker, who works at an office job with some outdoor responsibilities and leads a very healthy lifestyle. He has a 21 percent chance of being injured or becoming ill and unable to work for three months or longer prior to retirement.

And what happens once that occurs? What happens if your last paycheck is your last paycheck?

If your illness or injury is among the 95 percent that happen outside of work, workers’ compensation will be of no assistance

to you. If you plan to rely on the government, you may find that you are among the 64 percent of Americans — including severely disabled Americans — who do not receive any assistance from the government or governmental programs, including Medicare, Social Security and supplemental Security Insurance.

But the situation does not need to be that desperate. Your membership in the Knights of Columbus gives you and your eligible family members exclusive access to disability income insurance that can help safeguard your paycheck.

With Knights of Columbus Disability Income Insurance, you can help make sure that you continue to earn an income, even when you cannot work.

Our disability income insurance is designed to be flexible so that, working with your brother Knight field agent, you can customize it to fit your needs. You choose the monthly benefit amount that’s right for you, the elimination period that makes the most sense, and the maximum benefit period for your policy.

And, by purchasing a disability income insurance policy from the Knights of Columbus, you have the added security of knowing that you are doing business with an unapologetically Catholic company that makes sure its investments do not violate Church teaching, and which has been repeatedly recognized as a “World’s Most Ethical” company.

You owe it to yourself and to your family to make sure that your financial future is secure, regardless of what happens. Don’t be caught off guard by surprises. Be on guard and be prepared.

Talk to your Knights of Columbus Field Agent today to learn how easy and affordable disability income insurance can be.
