Our Pastor’s Letter

Year of Mercy

Pope Francis declared a Jubilee Year of Mercy which began on December 8, 2015, in which we are also celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council. The year will end on November 20, 2016 (Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe). In the Jewish tradition the Jubilee year was every fifty years and was a time of forgiveness and reminder of God’s providence. This Jubilee year is extraordinary in that it is outside the normal cycle.

God has revealed Himself as mercy already in the Old Testament. God acted in the history of the People

of Israel, continually forgiving them and not treating them as their sins deserved. In an even clearer way, the actions and words of Jesus are full of mercy; as Pope Francis writes, “Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy.” (Misericordiae Vultus #1)

This year of Mercy is a time for the Church to recognize the immense mercy that God has for us and then

proclaim this mercy by our actions. We can be merciful with others because first God has been merciful with us. Pope Francis has been especially inviting us to have mercy with those who are on the fringes.

The Holy Father has asked us to reflect this year on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. The

corporal works of mercy are to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the prisoners, bury the dead, and give alms to the poor. The spiritual works of mercy are to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish the sinner, comfort the sorrowful, forgive injuries, bear wrongs patiently, and pray for the living and the dead.

One of the components of the Jubilee Year of Mercy is that Catholics are invited to make a pilgrimage to

one of the Holy Doors that are open during this Jubilee year throughout the world: “the Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope.” (Misericordiae Vultus #3) Archbishop Samuel Aquila has designated five Holy Doors throughout northern Colorado. They are located at: the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, St. Stephen Protomartyr in Glenwood Springs, Our lady of Guadalupe in Denver, St. Anthony’s in Sterling, and the Mother Cabrini Shrine in Golden.

Pope Francis has announced an opportunity for Catholics to obtain a plenary indulgence during the Year of Mercy by passing through a designated Holy Door during the Year of Mercy, or performing one of the corporal or spiritual works of mercy; and fulfilling the usual conditions of having the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, receiving sacramental Confession and the Holy Eucharist and praying for the intentions of the Holy Father. A plenary indulgence removes the temporal punishment due for sins. This punishment may come either in this life, in the form of various sufferings, or in the next life, in purgatory. Indulgences can be applied either to oneself or to the souls of the deceased.

Mary, Mother of Mercy, pray for us in this year of Mercy. Fr. Mark

Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time — How is My Faith?

Habakkuk 1:2–3; 2:2–4. In the times of strife in life, what are we to do? Rashly despair? No, wait for the Lord; he never disappoints.

Psalm 95: 1–2, 6–7, 8–9. Joy, we have joy because we are God’s people. He cares for us like a shepherd, who speaks to us in our darkness to comfort us, give us our safe path, and to cheer us by his presence. Listen for his voice and follow what he says.

Paul’s second letter to Timothy 1:6–8, 13–14. Our faith, and our call is a personal gift. Paul is urging us to stir our life of faith to its fullness. It is a courageous life, one of “power and love and self-control.” You have strength from God, norms to follow in the teachings. You have “the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus,” and you have the Holy Spirit within you. Rouse your faith into a fire.

The Gospel of Luke 17:5–10. Life with faith is different from life without it. Wonders are possible in the Lord. How is your life different because of your faith? Peace and even joy are possible in the face of illness, even of death. Cures have been recorded among people of faith. “Hopeless,” sinners have become great saints. Do you have any examples of the

impossible made possible in the Lord? We are “unprofitable servants,” because all is gift and we are grateful.

Great adventures for SHJ Middle School Students!

SHJ 7th graders went to the Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI) this week as part of their science curriculum on invertebrates. They explored marine life in the Pacific and were in a "hands on" touch pool with sharks and rays.

Next week our 6th grade students take their annual field trip to Pingree Park. Managed by Colorado State University, this outdoor educational facility north of Fort Collins provides our students with hands-on learning in fire ecology, ecosystems, orienteering and hiking.

This week too, our 8th grade students will take a field trip to Holy Family High School to learn what life will be like in Catholic high school.

We are so proud of our middle school learners!

If you know of a family with students in preschool through 8th grade, please let them know about the award-winning Catholic education available here in the heart of Boulder at SHJS. Or let Admission Director, Jennifer Wilcomb know about the family and she will reach out to them. Call her at 303 447-2362 X 107
