Saddle & Sirloin ClubPortrait Collection Guidebook

About the Cover –The cover features “Bull in Defiant Stance,” by Isidore Bonheur, a bronze sculpture in the University Art Collection, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. That University won possession of the coveted trophy by winning the International Collegiate Judging Contest in 1901, 1902, and 1903. The sculpture became the trademark of the International during its 76 year history and has continued to be associated with the Saddle & Sirloin Club, since the collection moved to the Kentucky Exposition Center.

NAILE 40th Anniversary Edition, 2013

Believed to be the world’s largest portrait gallery commemorating a single industry, the Saddle & Sirloin Club Portrait Collection honors leaders in all facets of the American livestock industry—leaders chosen by their peers. The Collection was established at Chicago’s Union Stock Yards in 1903, where the International Live Stock Exposition resided; and in 1976, the Collection moved to the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, home of the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE). With this printing of the 2013 guidebook—a brief history of the Collection and its inductees—368 individuals have been honored with a Saddle & Sirloin Club portrait. On the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the NAILE, we offer this tribute to these industry leaders.

Preface & Acknowledgements

This current edition of the Saddle & Sirloin Club Portrait Collection Guidebook is published on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the North American International Livestock Exposition, and it captures a great deal of new information gathered during a research project begun in 2010. The introductory essay provides an overview of the collection’s history and includes, for the first time, significant information about the collection’s artists, many of whom were among the most celebrated portraitists of their time.

The brief biographies of the Saddle & Sirloin Club inductees reflect information drawn from primary sources whenever possible, to provide an accurate summary of the individuals’ accomplishments. Many biographies have been expanded, and a number have been featured in a grouping of policy leaders, United States Presidents, and U. S. Secretaries of Agriculture at the beginning of the directory, to further highlight their outstanding contributions to agriculture. Some of the biographies, however, are still incomplete, and we welcome any information that would strengthen the collection archives.

The Saddle & Sirloin Club Portrait Gallery was founded in 1903 by three men—Arthur F. Leonard, Robert B. Ogilvie, and Alvin H. Sanders—who wished to honor significant leaders in the livestock industry on the grounds of Union Stock Yards in Chicago, where the International Live Stock Exposition was held. Henry F. Brown financed the first portraits, painted by artist James Reeve Stuart. Alvin Sanders documented the origins of the collection in the 1915 publication, At the Sign of the Stock Yard Inn. In 1920, Edward N. Wentworth published A Biographical Catalogue of the Portrait Gallery of the Saddle and Sirloin Club, featuring essays on each of the 127 men who had been inducted in the first years of the collection.

The collection continued to grow until the unthinkable happened in 1934: a fire destroyed all of the paintings and the records of the portrait gallery. The primary Club artist at the time, Robert Wadsworth Grafton, accomplished the Herculean task of repainting many of the works. Although he worked very quickly, his portraits are of high quality and represent 160 of the 358 paintings in the collection today. Many fine paintings were lost in the fire, and some portraits were never repainted, but Robert Grafton’s contributions to rebuilding this historic gallery must not be overlooked. He is one of only two collection artists to be honored as a Saddle & Sirloin inductee.

Alvin Sanders, mindful of the great losses of 1934, created a written inventory of all of the works in the collection right before his death in 1948. This inventory was updated and republished periodically, as new inductees were added.

Decades later, in the final days of the International Live Stock Exposition, the Saddle & Sirloin Club leaders, led by Frank Harding, selected the Kentucky Exposition Center as the new home for the portrait collection. The tradition of selecting new livestock industry honorees each year was transferred from the International to the North American International Livestock Exposition. Charles Barnhart and Harold Workman oversaw this transition to Louisville in 1975, and Harold Workman became the Saddle & Sirloin Club’s principal champion. Wesley Garrigus wrote new biographies of the inductees in 1978 and prepared the text for the 1981 collection guidebook.

Over the years, Harold Workman, David Snider, Jeff Zinner, and Corinne Fetter have worked to oversee care for the portraits in the Saddle & Sirloin gallery and the collection records. Many other staff members of the Kentucky State Fair Board have helped maintain, display, and interpret the works, including Joe McGee, Barry Dozier, and Melissa Cooper.

Dale F. Runnion, Harlan D. Ritchie, and Richard Willham collaborated to author the 1992-2009 editions of the guidebook; and many individuals have participated in the design, editing, and proofing of this 2013 edition, especially Lauren Beckley, Jeff Zinner, Leah Pfeister, Bonnie Johnson, Brenda O’Bryan, Linda Brock, Kylie Smith, Corinne Fetter, and Harold Workman.

The 2013 Saddle & Sirloin Club Portrait Collection Guidebook is possible due to the contributions of each of those individuals named above and many more. We hope you enjoy this guided tour through the halls of the world’s largest portrait gallery to chronicle a single industry—the great leaders of American livestock in the Saddle & Sirloin Club Portrait Collection.
