First Aid Training Saves

Lives and Reduces

Workplace Injuries

Did you know that people

trained in first aid are less

likely to suffer a workplace

injury than those who have no

formal training?

"Research shows that those who complete first aid trainingbecome more aware of potential dangers and can reduce theirrisk of personal injury by up to 40%. Red Cross First Aid trainingalso helps many Canadian companies to significantly reducecosts related to accidents by teaching employees how to preventand respond to workplace emergencies and injuries."~ Canadian Red Cross 2008

In the Redpath Americas group we are very fortunate to havethree active certified First Aid trainers - Julie Gray (Indonesia)Tanya Getz (Reno) and Roberta Spicer (North Bay). Collectivelythey have conducted first aid training for field employees inlocations such as Pogo and Niblack in Alaska, Sudbury, Timminsand Red Lake in Ontario and also at the Freeport site inIndonesia.

Additionally, courses have been held at head office foremployees and family members. I have had the privilege ofattending training sessions conducted by all three and can attestto their outstanding dedication, enthusiasm and professionalism.

Over the past couple of years almost 600 Redpath employees inthe Americas group have received the equivalent of StandardFirst Aid training or higher. Roberta has trained 169 employeesin Canada, Julie 41 in Indonesia and Tanya 107 in the UnitedStates. In Chile, at the Rio Blanco project, 53 employees havebeen trained in FA by the Health and Safety Association of Chile, while SOS International professionals have trained 69employees at Oyu Tolgoi in Mongolia and another 147 atFreeport in Indonesia.

Although mine sites typically have either EMT's or RegisteredNurses on duty at all times, there is significant value in trainingour workers and supervisors in first aid. This will enable quickintervention in the event of a workplace injury or illness andensure the worker is being responded to appropriately while thetrained professionals are summoned from surface.

Safety - First, Last, and Always

In the U.S., Bob Delbridge (Safety Superintendent.) and VictorHarrel (Storm project Safety Supervisor) are certified EMTs(emergency medical technicians) as is Chris Betsill at Kumtor. Also in the U.S., Paul Davis, Curtis Black, Dave Smith, ErikPederson, Phillip Clark, Jeff Simpson and Dan Ivie are all trainedFirst Responders (40 hr course).

“….I kind of like it ....”

In any business, one is faced with a never ending series ofchallenges. Redpath is certainly no exception to this. The miningcontracting business is chock full of challenges and every dayour company and our employees take these on as a matter ofroutine.

How am I going to get this task done on time? How can this bedone safely? Where am I going to find enough miners for thisproject? What do we have to do to meet that schedule? Who canfix this piece of equipment? Why can’t we do it more costeffectively?..... These are just a few of the questions that getasked on a pretty regular basis at Redpath. Sometimes thechallenges seem daunting, even overwhelming, intimidating andoften they don’t seem to end! And, while we all know and believethat “Challenge is an Important Part of Life”, dealing with thesechallenges gets to be a bit much and sometimes we getdiscouraged.

One of the unique features of first aid training, compared to otherworkplace training, is that the skills and knowledge learned inthese courses are also applicable to daily life, as wasdemonstrated over the holidays…

I have a bit of good news I would like to share regarding the first

aid training Tanya conducted at Pogo. Darcy Buchanan's 16

month old son, Winston, swallowed a piece of walnut over the

Christmas holidays and began choking. Darcy said he realized "hey

I know what to do" and performed the infant foreign body airway

obstruction thrusts that he was taught by Tanya. It worked and the

walnut was dislodged. Darcy said he owes many thanks to Tanya.

Thanks for the awesome training Tanya.

NEWS FROM ...

INDONESIA

Selamat Tahun Baru from Indonesia,

Following the significant downturn, then partial rebound, in themining industry, the past year was challenging and, with steadydetermination and focus, we look forward to continuing theturnaround through this year.

On December 24 PTRI achievedth 1 million manhours withoutan LTA. This was considered a significant achievement, one thatnormally takes enormous commitment and dedication. Thesafety and training team, under the guidance of WayneGrudzinski, continues to play a key role in assisting operationstowards reaching this goal through their diligence to safetyprograms and encouragement for all employees to follow bestpractices. Congratulations!!

In October Gary Gagain and Wayne Boucher visited site toperform an inspection and training session of the mechanizedraising program under Bill Goodman and Max McDermid.Initiatives included training mechanized raising employees on thesafe operation of PTRI’s raise climbers; establish a trainingschool on site; mechanical training; inventory inspection; conductan audit of existing MRC operations; and introduce safetyinnovations and Redpath MRC standards. The visit was asuccess, complete with a thorough close out meeting and actionplan. Huge thanks to Gary, Wayne and the Timmins Group fortheir efforts, and for what sets the stage for annual on-sitetraining and audit sessions.

In December, Mike Kelly and I conducted corporate audits for theRaisebore and Alimak Groups. While both groups did very well, there were a few concentrated days of documentation and workareas reviews. You would have never guessed that Mike Kellyand Guy Julien (Guymo) have a long history and I think both Guyand Bill Goodman were glad to see us leave.

Redpath continues to provide essential services to Freeport’scurrent underground operations. Noteworthy accomplishmentsinclude the Grasberg Block Cave Mine Ventilation Drift #2 (GVD)breakthrough, led by Danny Scott, Wayne Harold and dedicatedcrews. The 2.5 km tunnel presented numerous challengesincluding ground conditions requiring steel sets and reinforcedshotcrete, along with water inflows. The team perseveredthrough to the breakthrough on October 16, 2009. Savour themoment, as this year will bring more challenges with lateraldevelopment scheduled for about 19 km. We are confident thatthis group is ready and willing to overcome each challenge.

Following a slowdown to the schedule in 2009, the Big Gossanmine is getting set for production this year. Big Gossan shaftcomponent commissioning was completed in November 2009with wet commissioning in February 2010. Special thanks toQuinn Walter, Ed Himsl, and Jeremy Berg and support crews fortheir efforts, and we look forward to a smooth ramp up for shaftproduction.

While the past year was mainly about reduced expenditures andmanpower reductions, the momentum has swung back towardsFreeport’s primary goal of developing future underground mines.Late last year Freeport approved a PTRI workforce increase of100 employees by March 2010. This year is the first in what willbe a decade-long strategy in Freeport’s mines developmentplanning.

We look forward to continued success in 2010 for a variety ofreasons - the economy is on the rebound, the next manpowerramp up is in motion, lateral and vertical development will returnto pre-2009 levels, and safety kicked off the year with the roll outof the Leadership for Excellence program.

All the best for a safe and productive year from Team Indonesia.

The AECL project is a program which does not garner theattention that it deserves. Throughout the 22 year life of theproject, the site team has completed various programs that - tothe outside observer - were exceptional in nature and completedwith safety at the forefront. In 2009, a decision was made byAECL to close the facility by year ending 2010. The programagain is not a normal mine related scope of work. The crews areimplementing a shaft closure plan as commissioned by AECL.The scope consists of removing all shaft and level infrastructurefrom the bottom up while installing shaft and vent raise plugs forfuture monitoring of water migration over the next 10 years. Thescope was recognized at inception as being high risk and, todate, the crews are enjoying a triple 0 safety record.

To Sam and the site team - Thank You for your effortsthroughout 2009 and I am sure 2010 will be as successful.

Musselwhite

The Musselwhite development program was completed with finaldemobilization on December 30 , 2009. The developmentth

program has been a model for other projects to emulate. Theproject, from inception to date, realized all key indicators forsuccess, a triple 0 Safety Record, a schedule that exceeded allexpectations, and financial success in a market that waschallenging, to say the least.

Redpath still continues to support the Musselwhite mine with agroup of electricians working on a surface infrastructure program. To Lou and the team of dedicated employees, I thank you foryour efforts and look forward to the next challenge in the not-too-distant future.

David Bell

The David Bell Highway Development Project started in October2009 and has proven to be another project that has realizedgreat success to date. The project has had many challengeswhich required extensive PHA and JHA initiatives along withdetailed engineering support.

The development program is a diverse one consisting ofconventional long tom sub level ramp development along withjumbo development. The team, led by Tyrone Dasti, has provenonce again that, through hard work and a team effort betweenthe client and contractor, success can be realized with a to date

(end April) triple zero safety record along with adjustments toschedule as required by the client.

To Tyrone and crew I thank you for your efforts to date and lookforward to continued success at the David Bell Project.

Lalor Project

The site mobilization has once again proven that any time youmobilize to the great white Canadian North you will encounterdifferent challenges. During the first week of December theweather turned from a moderate -5 to -7 temperature to anextreme -30 to -35 within 3 days. To say the least the trucking ofthe equipment from North Bay to SnoLake was unforgiving. Justask Gerry Ouellette, Rick Gagain and Ed George. Throughadverse weather and site logistical issues, the site team pulledit all together and was able to meet the December 17 goal ofth

breaking rock on the project.

The project to date (end March)is enjoying a triple zero safetyrecord and, at present, is beingfine tuned to meet the expectedKPI.

To all people involved in themobilization of the project Ithank you for your efforts and -to Rick and the site team - yourefforts are appreciated and I amsure the project will realizesuccess.

Kidd Mine

Kidd Mine Rehab started back in February of 2009 and wassupposed to be completed by August of 2009. Since then, lots ofthings have changed - our client was so pleased with Redpath atthe Kidd Mine site for our excellent safety and productivityperformance we were awarded a contract extension into 2010.Our scope of work is basically the same but we are moving to thelower levels in the mine. I would like to thank the managementteam and employees for the hard work, dedication andcommitment to this project.

We’re also on 9600L developing the up ramp, and the down rampto the shaft bottom. This project will continue offering us achallenge but we have the equipment and the team in place toachieve the goals for Redpath and Xstrata.

TECHNICAL SERVICES - SHOPS

Things have been busy at the shop lately and we have mobedequipment for four Northern projects including Red Lake, DavidBell, Kidd and Lalor. The Lalor Lake project was perhaps the mostchallenging and the guys successfully refurbished a full fleet of

equipment in three weeks time. Merv and crew worked aroundthe clock for 5 months preparing equipment for these projects aswell as providing assistance to break the equipment down andreassemble the units underground. It’s been a great experiencefor the guys and - so much so - that a few of our mechanics fromthe shop have chosen to work at these projects on a full timebasis. It’s great to see new employees enter the mining industry, train with us for awhile in the shop and make their way to one ofour projects….they have an exciting career ahead of them.

It was certainly a busy 2009 for us at the shop and guys arelooking forward to a great 2010.

HUMAN RESOURCES

November 16-20, 2009 was an exciting week for the HumanResources Team from around the world as we met in Toronto,Canada for the first time in the Global Summit for HumanResources and Administration. It was a very busy week and afull agenda. However, it was a great opportunity to meet eachother face to face to discuss the important people andadministrative issues associated with contract mining on a globalscale including recruiting, file management, best practices, thestreamlining of processes where applicable, etc. Many thanksto Amy and Nathalie for coordinating this event, it was a greatsuccess.

The implementation of the Human Resources ManagementSystem (HRMS) continues to make its drive forward with theRecruiting and Foundation modules, Canada is operational andhistorical data is being input on a continuous basis. Mongolia isactive on the live system and is ready to start accepting newhires as that project starts its ramp-up. In Indonesia, theexpatriates are active on the live side system; the Nationals areexpected to be on the live system in March 2010. The UnitedStates is on the test system at present and should be moving tothe live system also in April/May 2010. The Chilean HRMSinitiative began in February 2010 with an initial visit from theimplementation team. The projected live date for Chile is July2010. However, this will depend on the utility of the Spanishversion of the system and the amount of customization that maybe required to go operational.

Message from the President, cont'd

So why is it that Redpath people always rise up and overcomethat occasional feeling of discouragement and get on with it?

I suggest it is due to the tremendous satisfaction that comes fromproviding a solution to those challenges. There is nothing morerewarding than providing solutions to problems and that is howI’ve come to think about our company and what’s unique aboutRedpath. We are a company that provides solutions to any - andall - of our client’s challenges. At the end of the day, it is thisproblem solving ability that will ensure we win the confidence ofour clients and gets us hired to solve the next problem.

“Redpath - The Solution Providers” ….I kind of like it - and itis a well-deserved compliment to the extraordinarily talentedteam of employees who work here, providing solutions!”

PT REDPATH INDONESIA SETS THE STANDARD

WEB-BASED SAFETY PROGRAM IS

A SUCCESS AT ALL LEVELS ...

How do you keep up-to-date safety and trainingrecords for NEARLY 700 employees at yourfingertips, and report in real time? WayneGrudzinski and his safety team knows ...

In September 2008, it became apparent that PTRedpath Indonesia (PTRI) required a system forrecording, tracking and measuring its safety andtraining efforts and performance with far greaterdetail and efficiency than was being done.

An audit, conducted by PT Freeport Indonesia(PTFI), revealed the current system was fallingshort of some of the detail and proof ofcompliance required to fully meet with PTFI’sreporting expectations.

Not prepared to “throw up their hands”, a team, dedicated tosafety and determined to meet - even exceed - the client’srequirements, was immediately assembled to ensure 100%compliance on future audits. A detailed review was made of ourprogram against Freeport’s reporting requirements and all auditmeasures were identified.

The goal was to develop a system that brought together themeasurable elements of Redpath’s safety program, the client’sexpectations, NOSA 5 Star, regulatory requirements - providecentralized documentation - and be easy to use.

The Plan addresses and identifies:

• what needs to be done• what we will do to get it done• who will do it• when it will be done, and• proof that it was done

It took 9 months to get the Safety & Training Plan to where it istoday - but the results are impressive - and stands as thesignature accomplishment of a skilled, youthful team.

In addition to meeting our obligations to Freeport, the Planprovides a vast resource for PTRI’s staff and employeesincluding:

• access to Redpath’s Safety Program and Policy• library of procedures• access to forms• centralized document control• topic suggestions for safety meetings and huddles

• news and events• contact information for safety and training reps

... all at your fingertips ...

The system remains flexible and new needs or communicationsare easily posted by authorized administrators.

Success was acclaimed in 2009 when a corporate audit carriedout by head office revealed a 99% compliance rating.

Great Job!

Pogo Project

The Pogo Project in Alaska has reached a few significantmilestones. John Mason and his team went the entire year of2009, 4 separate inspections, with no MSHA citations. This isa major accomplishment both with MSHA and Redpath. Pogohas been no slouch on the safety front either - No LTAs sinceApril 2009. Teck Pogo has built a new camp for Redpath andthe other subcontractors on site. Averaging 60 feet per day and8-10 headings, the Pogo project has been running like a well-oiled machine.

Paul Schmidt worked with Redpath’s Pogo miners to completethree large underground sumps. Installations included concretedam walls, cross-over slabs, a filter bay slab, lots of piping hungoff steel pipe hangers, three monorails, catwalks and all thefiltering and pumping equipment. The motto throughout theproject was Safety First, Quality Second, everyone remembersthose two qualities in that order before anything else.

In early December Redpath finished up a small rehab project atthe Delta Mine Training Center in Delta, Alaska. This was asmaller project, lasting only two months, with three minersworking to bolt, screen and shotcrete some drift. This projectwas a success, achieving Triple 0 - with no injuries of anykind.

Engineering and Estimating

We’re pleased to welcome Matt Perkins as an Engineer andEstimator in the corporate office to replace Jenelle Dalton whohas moved to the Pogo project in Alaska. Matt is a recentgraduate of the University of Nevada Reno in MiningEngineering. Matt worked his way through college as a welderfor the local Caterpillar dealership and is father to a little girlnamed Ryleigh.

First Responder Class held in Reno for the Pogo crew. We had10 people attend this very intense week-long class. This classis normally a month long but Remsa was able to squeeze all of

the training into one week for us. This meant long days in theclassroom and long nights in the motel room studying. The guyswho attended did so on their day’s off. Every one of thempassed and received their accreditations. We are very proud ofall of them. We now have First Responders on every crew.

The other First Responders who are not pictured --- Paul Davis,Curtis Beck, Erik Pedersen and Dan Ivie.

Pascua Lama

The Pascua Lama tunnel project straddles the border betweenChile and Argentina at an altitude of 5,000 metres.

Preparations for the project continued as some key milestoneswere realized. The first Sandvik Jumbo arrived in the port ofValparaiso on December 6 followed by the first set of MacLeanth

Shotcrete equipment. On November 27 the surface workth

contractor fired the first shot on the portal cut excavation.

We are continuing the process of hiring over 100 personnelmany of whom were undergoing inductions and equipmenttraining in December and January.

Thanks to everyone who has helped us get to this critical pointwhere we are poised to initiate on-site activities!

El Teniente Bid for New Level

The project called “Access to New Level at Mina El Teniente”was estimated in joint venture partnership between Frontier-Kemper and Redpath, and included an arduous workload froma great team from both companies. Without any doubt, all thetime and effort invested in the work of estimating and designingfor this Project was evident the moment we began to prepare itto be delivered to Codelco’s offices in Rancagua, about 110 kmssouth from Santiago. Due to the huge volume of documentsinvolved, it took two people - the leader of the project NéstorGaravelli (Frontier Kemper) and a Redpath study engineer - toget it there. Finally the bid was delivered on time, sharply at 8:00a.m. with the satisfaction of a job well done.

Used resources/materials:# 2 trucks to transport the bid# 26 boxes of 1.3 cubic meters # 26 boxes of 0.6 cubic meters # 26 boxes of 0.3 cubic meters # 26 2” binders# 26 1” binders# 26 3” binders# 35 paper boxes (550 sheets each)# 78 sets of separators with letters# 78 sets of separators with numbers# More than 150 plotted plans.

MONGOLIA

Once again, everything is on the move in Mongolia. After yearsof waiting, the Government of Mongolia and Ivanhoe Mines/RioTinto signed an Investment agreement establishing theoperating parameters for the construction and operation of theOyu Tolgoi Project. The local operating company was renamedOyu Tolgoi LLC. Following this, it was announced thatUS$758M has been made available for engineering andconstruction activities in 2010. A portion of this has beenallocated for the continuation of underground development atNo. 1 Shaft, as well as engineering and construction of No. 2Shaft.

In order to fulfill our commitments, recruitment activities, bothforeign and national have increased exponentially. With DougWheeler driving the mining, Grant Coad the engineering, MariusSnyman the safety, and a host of very capable national andexpat employees, I am confident of success.

Of course even busy people need to take time to let their hairdown – at least those that have hair anyway. Gord Reed

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT &COMMERCIAL SERVICES

Estimating Services has been hopping these past few months -bidding projects - assisting clients - and supporting operationsaround the globe.

Estimating Services, Contract Services and Project Services areall working closely together as an integrated team.

Over the past 6 months, we have seen - • the training of personnel and implementation of Hard Dollar

estimating software in Canada, and introduction to SouthAmerica and United States.

• the training of personnel and implementation of Primaverascheduling and project management software in Canada,South America and United States.

• project controllers being assigned to most projects either onsite or at corporate office.

A few members of the team spent some time in Santiago, Chileworking with our sister company, Frontier-Kemper (FKCI) of theU.S., putting together a proposal for the New Level AccessTunnels project at El Teniente Mine.

Ok Tedi Drainage Tunnel – Project Completion

Friday, 20 Novemberth

marked the conclusionof the OK Tedid r a inage Tunne lproject in Papua NewGuinea. The projectteam successfullycompleted their lastchallenge of “backingout” the remainingdecks and main beamTBM, along 3.5 km ofrail, to the originallaunch chamber. The

machine was then stripped, cleaned and packed ready fortransport out of the country, to its next tunnel project.

The 5.6 m diameterTBM advanced 3,554m between September2008 and May 2009,before being stoppedby impassable groundconditions associatedwith an unconsolidatedfault structure. Thedrainage tunnel wassafely completed bydriving a further 487m,by conventional drilland blast methods, around the fault structure to the final shaft locations.

Two 1.2 m diameter shafts were then raise bored approximately220 meters to connect the tunnel with the open cut pit above, which allows drainage of water from the mine surface.

Challenges along the tunnel length included:

# poor ground conditions and voids which required theinstallation of 79 steel sets and significant pressure groutingat various locations;

# the intersection of strata containing significant quantities ofwater, with some high pressure water measuring up to20MPa;

# the intersection of gas bearing strata which required theinstallation of an array of gas drainage pipes and restrictionsto tunnel entry and work conditions.

At the end of November 2009, the project had been operating for19 months, with 633,042 hours worked, one lost time injury andan average workforce during the project of 102 persons.

Although the actual drainage tunnel is complete, Redpath hassecured additional work at the site - 1400m of small scale drilland blast development; including two new portals designed toaccess diamond drill locations, for orebody delineation andfurther open pit dewatering.

The Redpath management team both present and past havedone an excellent job in a difficult environment and culturalsetting and are well placed to continue the challenge of PNG withthe project extension.

carga, acto seguido retornó a campamento.

Proyecto TDRB

Story from a worker at Project TDRB (Andina Mine),

during the earthquake in Chile

“I was sleeping on site and at 03:40 hrs., a big tremor began. I got out

of bed to check on the workers at V3. After the earthquake stopped,

there was no way to get up or down site, since there were no roads to go

anymore. The only way to communicate with others was by radio,

where I was able to find out everybody was doing fine. Later, I listened

on the radio that the driver of the water truck was going up the hill

loaded and he had to stop by a landslide which caused damages to the

truck, but the workers managed to return safely to the “control zero”

area.

At the same time, the truck loaded with explosives

was going up to site and was hit by a rock, from a

landslide at km 21; fortunately, our workers

managed to make it OK, and left without any

injuries. Even after this accident, the truck was able

to operate and returned to the magazine to unload

the explosives, and immediately returned to camp.

People were evacuated successfully to camp and soon

to their houses, by order from Codelco VCP.

No-one at Redpath was injured, but a truck driver from JM ended up

with a wrist hurt when he fell from his bed during the earthquake.”

I hope this overdue issue

of The Scoop finds

everyone fully engaged

in the numerous exciting

projects we have all over

the world.

This issue is coming later than planned due to the requirement foreveryone to participate in a number of large bids with tighttimelines. A very large contingent was required to assist in SouthAmerica, which had its own highlights and lowlights as you’ll seein this issue. A definite high was how we responded with quakesupport in Chile, once again Redpath people stepped up in a verylarge way with support and hefty donations, all without wanting orneeding to be recognized with a lot of publicity and fanfare.

I have also just finished visiting a site which has had anoutstanding safety record - I was curious whether it was good luckor good management. This property has 25 skilled expats leading90 or so national employees who all started with virtually nounderground experience, add in the fact that 80% speak littleEnglish and you can understand the difficulty. When undergroundat the faces I asked numerous nationals if they knew the 5 pointsafety system - 100% responded correctly. I knew then why thesafety record was so good. All employees knew and understoodthe importance Redpath places on a safe work environment. Hatsoff to the team at Kumtor and Chris Betsill (safety supterintendent)for his diligence in training.

From the EditorI learned a new Spanish word whileI was in Chile earlier this year -

Terremoto - one I’ll not forget.

The mere sound has an air of terrorassociated with it.

There have been many stories of loss, of heroes, of comradery, and of laughter and survival that came through all the tears andfears. Some of these stories are being shared with youthroughout this issue of “The Scoop”.

I can say with some certainty that I’ll be avoiding regions withactive volcanoes for the next while - you know - just in case ...
