The Mirror Technique

The mirror technique can be powerful for the protagonist

who are unable to tolerate the intensity of playing

themselves in a drama, who need one step removed in

order to feel safe.

In this technique, an auxiliary egos plays the protagonist,

expressed the protagonist feelings in word and

movement.

The protagonist thus sees himself as if in a mirror: a

living representation of himself.

The Mirror Technique

Besides, mirror technique provides a protagonist with an

opportunity to view from a less heated position, and with the

support of the director, a traumatic or puzzling event.

It also can allow the protagonist to gain perspective on hisown behaviour, by watching rather than by being.

Besides that, according to Holt, themirror technique uses

another member to mirror the protagonist's postures,gestures and words as they appear in the enactment so he

can see himself as others do(2011).

The Director

The director is the trained facilitator who produces, observes,

acts as a catalyst and guides the group action.

The Protagonist

The protagonist is the person presenting a problem or issue to

be explored.

The Auxiliary Egos

Group members who take on the roles of significant others,

either living or dead, in the protagonist's life, including

inanimate objects, pets or other emotionally charged objects

which are known as the auxiliary egos roles in a drama.

The Audience

The audience is comprised of group members who witness

the drama and serve as a type of externalized mirror.

The stage is the physical space in which the drama takes

place.

Instructions:

1. Find a partner

2. A will start the actions (the leader) and B will be the

follower (mirror)

3. B reflects all movements and facial expressions

4. Next, A becomes the mirror and B will start the actions.

To help actors gain focus while

simultaneously engaging two individuals to

sync up their energy.

An excellent acting exercise to perform in a

new acting class as an icebreaker to helpnew actors get over their nerves and fears.
