A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR

4 | April 4, 2021

Dear brothers and sisters, Happy Easter! As a church family, we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who lived, died and rose again for our salvation. When Christ rose from the dead, it represented All Things New. Our past is behind us and a new day and future is ahead. The Apostle Paul put it this way in 2 Corinthians 5:17, "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation: old things are passed away, behold all things have become new." We do not tell the Easter story as an event that has happened in the past to our ancestors. Easter happens again today. We do not say, “He was risen.” No, we say, “He is risen.” We tell the story not because it happened but because it is still happening. For God there is no time. Within the infinite being of God, all things are present. In this sense, the Crucifixion is always present before God. Therefore, Good Friday is today, the Resurrection is today, the Last Supper happens today. Jesus did not ride away on a white horse. His historical, physical body has returned to heaven, but he promised that he would remain with us until the end of the world. Our hope is that every Christian has a living relationship with Jesus. He is not just a story from the past. He is real and active in our lives. Each of us experiences the resurrection repeatedly in our own lives; our sin may squash his presence in us, but he rises again through mercy and brings us to more. Jesus is alive! He lives today! He is here among us! We are not witnessing Jesus walking silently away. Rather he walks directly into our hearts and into our lives. The empty tomb and his resurrection is not the end of the story; it is a new beginning. This Easter Sunday, as every Sunday, we hear, we taste, we stand in awe; we claim the story of the Holy Week as our own, and we tell it again and again, so that, in time, we will recognize its great fulfillment. Peace to you a long the way, Rev. Timothy Do Queridos hermanos y hermanas, ¡Feliz Pascua de Resurrección! No decimos: "Resucitó". Decimos: "Ha resucitado". ¡Vive hoy! Timothy Do

GOSPEL REFLECTION

Taken from the "Weekly Guide for Daily Prayer" on the Creighton University's Online Ministries web site: http://www.creighton.edu/CollaborativeMinistry/online.html Used with permission.

St Joseph Catholic Church | 5

Easter Week Easter Sunday, we read from the Acts of the Apostles to hear Peter's preaching about the Resurrection. The Letter to the Colossians reminds us “You have died and your lives are hidden with Christ in God.” The Gospel is from John's Gospel and gives us the first story of that Easter morning - Mary Magdalene discovers the empty tomb and runs to Peter and the “disciple Jesus loved” to tell them. They run to the tomb and discover for themselves that it is empty.

The first reading for Easter Week is from the Acts of the Apostles. We hear Peter's preaching the Good News and experience the first deeds of the Apostles, which parallel the acts of Jesus, including the conflicts he experienced and his power to heal.

The Gospels this week are all resurrection appearances. These wonderful stories contain some common elements. They appear designed to make it clear that this was not a group of disciples who dreamed up the resurrection, because they were hoping for it so much. In fact, they found it difficult to believe. The Jesus they saw and experienced was not a “ghost.” Instead, he had a body.

Monday, is the story of Jesus appearing to Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, as well as the “cover-up story” and pay off of the guards. Tuesday, we read of Jesus' appearance to Mary Magdalene, through the eyes of John's Gospel. Jesus missions her to announce the Good News to his brothers. On Wednesday we are treated to Luke's marvelous story of Jesus' appearance to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. They were sad, because they had hoped the story would have turned out differently. Jesus tells them why he had to first suffer and die in order to enter into his glory. As they stopped to eat, “he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.” Thursday Jesus appears in the room where the disciples are gathered. “Peace be with you” he says and then eats with them and shows them his wounds. On Friday, we have the powerful appearance in John's Gospel at the Sea of Tiberias. Peter decided to return to fishing. Jesus appears and re-missions him. On Saturday, the week concludes with the summary of appearances in what appears to be an addition to the end of Mark's Gospel.

On the Second Sunday of Easter, as we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday, we get a picture into how the early community lived their life of faith by sharing everything in common. In John's Gospel, Jesus appears to the Apostles, hiding in fear, and gives them the gift of his Spirit, calling them to forgive sins. We are reminded that the gospel is written, that we might come to believe in our Lord and have life in his name.

We all need to increase our efforts with our four T’s Time, Treasure, Talent and Testimony

Everyday Stewardship is one way to help us! When they looked up, they saw that the s tone had been rolled back, it was very large. On entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a white robe, and they were utterly amazed. He has been raised; he is not here. Behold the place where they laid him. But go and tell his disciples and Peter, “He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you.” Mark 16: 4-7

When I married my wife, I also inherited her family tradition of having pennies lead the way to each child’s basket on Easter Sunday morning. I had never encountered such a thing. When I was a child, the basket was just there. There was no journey, no path, and no pennies. Today, even with children older and more mature, at least in their minds, the pennies are still there. The destination is great, but the journey makes it that much better. Lent is now over. The journey was long and at times, not easy. However, Easter does not exist without Good Friday. The Resurrection does not have the same impact without the Passion. To get anywhere of value and importance there is always a journey to get there. But now, the real journey begins. We are an Easter people and now we are called to live out our baptismal call. In baptism, we died and rose with Christ. The story of Lent is our story, and the incredible plot twist of Easter belongs to our story as well. If Jesus did not rise from the dead, there is no need for stewardship. Without a crucified risen Lord, we still need to help one another, show kindness, and be people of virtue. These actions help to make a civilized society work. But with an empty tomb, we do these basic actions, and so much more, because now we have a hope in something beyond our earthly lives something that eternally lasts. WE are an Easter people! A new meaning has been given tour very existence because of this Good News. So, with Easter, the journey has only begun. There aren’t pennies to guide the way, but a risen Savior that now walks with us, from this world into the next. Alleluia! Alleluia!

IDEA FOR RESPONSE Take the time to reread the Gospel accounts of the Resurrection, this time being more mindful of the reality of the event.

TAKE TIME TO REFLECT What difference does it make in my life that Jesus is really alive?

(Be more consistent with your Treasure, check out Online Giving on the parish website!)

Co Responsibility Commission Presents Everyday Stewardship By Tracy Welliver
