There is a radio commercial I hear almost every morning when I wake up to WBBM, News Radio 78. One of the lines in this commercial tells how, when the owners of their company, a husband and wife, were married, they agreed that he would make all the important, major decisions and she would handle all the little ones. Then the husband goes on to say that, in all the years of their marriage, he never had to make a major decision. There is some truth in that – it is the little things in life that make all the difference in a successful relationship. Therefore, I invite you (and you know who you are) to make a little decision for your family, the people of Saint Fabian Parish. It seems that most people are pleased with the newly reupholstered kneelers. There have been a few complaints, but you cannot ever please everyone. As I walk through the church to set up the altar before Saturday evening and Sunday morning Mass, I see many people using the kneelers as a footrest. Kneelers are very fragile and easily break. This is true of every parish in which I have served. Kneelers are called “kneelers” because they are meant for kneeling and not as a footrest. I know I might be sounding a little “picky,” but please take care of the kneelers. And while I am on this subject, would it be possible to pick up the kneelers when they are not in use and put down the kneelers when they are in use with your hands instead of your feet? This is the noisiest part of the Mass. The most “noise” at Mass should come from your responses to the prayers and your singing. And since I am being a bit “picky,” how about: Last one out closes the door?!!! Do you leave the doors open at home when the air conditioning is on?

********** What’s next? The chapel kneelers and chairs are reupholstered and there is a new carpet there. The church kneel-ers have been reupholstered and most people seem pleased. The new blinds in the school building have been installed and we can open the windows without the noise from the old blinds banging around all over the place. Now we are going to spend some of the money we received through your donations in the To Teach Who Christ Is pledge drive to do more work in the parking lot to make it safer for those who drive and for those who walk – like me - so you don’t have to worry about tripping in one of the holes.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the mid-1960s, many religious congregations that had maintained a custom of assigning new names to their members allowed a return to baptismal names. The practice stems from the origins of monastic life, when a desire to flee the world and its enchantments caused a severe break with family life and commitments. A new name signified that the old person had died and a new one was coming to life. Some orders even spread fu-neral palls over their entrants and tolled the funeral bell. On a practical level, in a crowded monastery of a few hundred monks or nuns, it made sense not to have six Brother Alfrics or nine Sister Clares. The one name, one person rule worked well. In more recent times, a young woman entering the convent might be given her parents’ names as a way of honoring their generosity, so Hilda might become Sister Philip Margaret after her father and mother. A cherished name in the order might be bestowed on a newcomer so that there would always be a Brother Owen around, or a young person might adopt the name of a beloved saint. A handful of religious congregations, like Mother Barat’s Religious of the Sacred Heart, always used family names. Many monasteries still bestow a new name at the end of probation. Other religious institutes have re-vived the custom of changing their candidates’ names at the end of novitiate, although for the most part religious who were around at the time of the Council were happy to get their baptismal names back. A few, of course, cherished their acquired names and have held on to them, so convents still hold the creativity badge for nam-ing. Twenty-Seventh Week of Ordinary Time We read from Luke's Gospel on the Twenty-Seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time about the apostles asking Jesus, “Increase our faith.” Jesus assures them they only need faith the size of a mustard seed. Then, Jesus makes it clear that as disciples our role is that of servants. Tuesday is the Memorial of Saint Francis of Assisi, religious. Friday is the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary. This week our first reading is from Paul's Letter to the Galatians. He chides and encourages this early Christian community and offers some history on the challenges he has faced as a disciple. The gospel this week is from Luke, continuing with wonderful and familiar stories. The Good Samaritan who comes upon the robbery victim “treated him with mercy.” Jesus' close friends Mary and Martha welcome him to their home, but Martha resents working while Mary listens to Jesus. “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part...” He teaches us to pray with a prayer to the Father. We are encouraged to ask, seek and knock on the door to get what we want from the Father. When doubters watch Jesus drive out demons, he gets discouraged and says, “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” When a woman calls out that the womb that carried him is blessed, he replies, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” For the Twenty-Eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time we have the powerful story about Jesus healing ten lepers and only one of them coming back to give thanks, and that one was the foreigner. It reminds us of the importance of gratitude.

Daily Prayer This Week: Anxiety about getting things done, fear of losing wealth and a lack of compassion for our neighbors are all themes in this week's gospel. This can be a week of asking God for the wisdom and discern-ment we need to find the balance in our lives and a sense of where our focus should really be. We can do this by threading our days with an awareness of God's presence in the tiny moments of quiet time that we come across. As we awaken and sit at the side of our bed, we can simply ask, “Loving God, help me to love you today with all my heart, with all my being, with all my strength, and with all my mind. Help me to see you in my neighbor today.” Later in the day, as things seem to go faster and get more complex, we can ask again not to be anxious about so many things and to remember the great gift of Jesus' presence in our lives. As we do the laundry, go to the store, or take care of family we can again ask our Lord to let us be aware of the presence of the loved ones we come in contact with - the real “riches” we have in our lives. The Our Father has been called the Perfect Prayer and this week might be a good time to focus in on it with our whole hearts. In the quiet moments before we go to bed, we can practice this week saying each line of the prayer, very slowly, perhaps stopping to ponder one line that calls to our hearts in a special way. Hallowed be thy name... Thy will be done... Give us this day our daily bread... Forgive us our trespasses... As we forgive others... Lead us not into tempta-tion... May this week be blessed the ability to continue to ask for what we need, over and over.

Jubilee Year of Mercy October 2, 2016

Twenty Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Jubilee of Marian Devotion begins next Saturday “How long, O LORD?” (Habakkuk 1:2). With Habakkuk’s question echoing across twenty-six hundred years, Respect Life Sunday finds all life claiming sanctu-ary in our hearts: unborn infant, senior citizen, immigrant and refugee, imprisoned and addicted, people burdened with illness and disabilities of body, mind, or spirit. Even Mother Earth, Pope Francis notes in Laudato Si’, bears scars of disrespect for the life she nurtures and sustains. Life is still threatened, as in Habakkuk’s day, with ruin and misery, “destruction and violence, . . . strife and clamorous discord” (see 1:3). Since our efforts so often seem ineffective, we “unprofitable servants” cry with the apostles, “Increase our faith” (Luke 17:10, 5). But Jesus’ reply might be paraphrased, “Not quantity—quality.” Next weekend marks the Jubilee Year of Mercy’s special devotion to Mary, whose willingness to shelter Jesus in her womb and stand at the foot of his cross bears witness to the qualities that Jesus expects our faith to manifest: the willingness to trust, to risk, and to dare to speak up for life. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
