STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE

Today we resume the "Bread of Life" discourse from John's Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews' ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faith-ful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Eli-jah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life--a marvelous promise, but this "reward" is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life.

We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all.

Free Day Retreat of the Dominican Laity at St. Mary's in Fullerton

The Orange County chapter of the Dominican Laity, the lay branch (“secular third or der”) of the Order of Preachers of St. Dominic, invites everyone to their annual retreat

day on Saturday, August 18, in one of the parish classrooms of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fullerton (400 W. Commonwealth Ave.). Fr. Justin Gable, O.P., prior in San Francisco and philosophy professor in Berkeley, will lead the retreat on practical lay spirituality in the Dominican tradition. The retreat will begin at 12 noon with lunch and close with Holy Mass at 5:30 P.M. in the parish church. COÄNG ÑOAØN THAÙNH GIUSE Quỳ gối sau Kinh Chiên Thiên Chúa (Agnus Dei)

Thỉnh thoảng chúng ta cần xét lại tại sao chúng ta thực hành những điều mà chúng ta đang làm. Đặc biệt đối với chúng ta là những Người Công Giáo, những người luôn ước mong bày tỏ lòng tôn sùng đặc biệt và kính thờ đối với Nhiệm Tích Thánh Thể Cực Trọng. Chúng ta biết rằng điều chúng ta thi hành trong Phụng Vụ Thánh tạo nên chúng ta, và người khác quan sát chúng ta, theo những cách mà đôi khi vượt ngoài ngôn từ! Đặc biệt với cung cách diễn tả của thân thể. Một số người cho thấy có sự xuề xòa đang được áp dụng trong xã hội của chúng ta: chẳng hạn như cách xưng hô bình dị với mọi người chỉ bằng tên riêng, cách phục sức thoải mái trong những sinh hoạt xã hội và không “chưng diện,” và việc chúng ta không đứng lên khi có một nhân vật quan trọng bước vào phòng. Điều này trong vô thức cũng có thể len lỏi vào việc cử hành Phụng Vụ của chúng ta. Nhằm chống lại sự thờ ơ này và giúp thúc đẩy tâm tình kính thờ và tri ân đối với Hồng Ân Thánh Thể, Đức Cha Vann yêu cầu thực hiện một sự thay đổi về cung cách của chúng ta trong suốt phần sau của Kinh Nguyện Thánh Thể. Hiện nay, chúng ta cùng đứng từ sau lời tung hô Amen cho tới sau khi rước Mình Thánh Chúa. Các tín hữu giờ đây bắt đầu quỳ gối sau Kinh Chiên Thiên Chúa (AgnusDei) với tâm hồn kính thờ và tôn sùng những gì đang diễn ra trên Bàn Thờ Hy Lễ. Sự thay đổi này sẽ được thực hiện tại các giáo xứ kể từ Chúa Nhật sau cùng trong tháng Tám và sẽ giúp chúng ta tự chuẩn bị cách thiêng liêng cho việc cung hiến Nhà Thờ Chánh Tòa, nơi mà sự thay đổi này sẽ trở thành quy luật. Cũng sẽ có những tình huống mà việc quỳ gối không thể thực hiện được,chẳng hạn như ai đó sức khỏe không cho phép,hay vì thiếu chỗ, khi có số đông người hiện diện, hoặc vì một lý do hợp lẽ nào khác. Điều này cũng có thể không thực hiện được trong những cộng đoàn đang cử hành các nghi lễ phụng vụ tại các phòng họp tạm thời nơi không có sẵn các ghế quỳ. Tuy nhiên, tất cả chúng ta đều có thể nâng cao tâm trí tập trung vào giây phút linh thiêng. Khi chúng ta ý thức hơn trong cách “làm khác biệt đi”, hy vọng việc quỳ gối sẽ giúp chúng ta ý thức và tập trung hơn trong tâm tình tôn sùng và kính thờ Mình và Máu Chúa Giêsu. Sự thay đổi này nhằm tuân giữ đúng sự hướng dẫn mà Quy Chế Tổng Quát Sách Lễ Rôma đã ban hành. Đây là “cuốn cẩm nang” chỉ dạy cách thức cử hành Thánh Lễ. Các chỉ thị trong cuốn cẩm nang gồm có luật chung dành cho Giáo Hội Công Giáo La Mã và“luật riêng”dành cho nước Mỹ. Quy Chế Tổng Quát cũng trao thẩm quyền cho Giám Mục Giáo Phận được phép ban hành các quy định nhằm đem lại ơn ích và phúc lợi cho các tín hữu trong giáo phận của ngài. Việc làm này có thể khác biệt tại những giáo phận chung quanh và thay đổi theo thời gian. Cử chỉ và cung cách của chúng ta sẽ giúp mang lại sự hợp nhất khi chúng ta cùng thi hành giống nhau và đồng bộ với nhau. Điều này cũng giúp phân biệt rõ ràng về ý nghĩa của các phần khác nhau trong Thánh Lễ và thúc đẩy chúng ta dự phần vào Phụng Vụ Thánh. Hãy để tất cả những gì chúng ta đang thực hiện giúp chúng ta đi vào tâm tình cầu nguyện và thờ phượng để mang lại ơn thánh hóa cho chúng ta và cho cả thế giới.

LECTURAS DE HOY Primera lectura -- Después de descansar y alimentarse nuevamente dos veces, Elías se forta lece para caminar a la montaña de Dios, el monte Horeb (1 Reyes 19:4-8). Salmo -- Gusten y vean qué bueno es el Señor (Salmo 34 [33]). Segunda lectura -- Han sido marcados por el Espíritu Santo de Dios para que imiten a Dios y vivan en amor (Efesios 4:30-5:2). Evangelio -- Jesús profesa que él es el pan de vida y todo el que coma ese pan vivirá para siempre (Juan 6:41-51).

ORTALECIDOS POR EL PAN DE VIDA

Hoy retomamos el discurso sobre el "Pan de Vida" del Evangelio según san Juan que comenzó hace dos sema-nas. Juan alude a los ancestros de los judíos que comi-eron el maná en el desierto. Hoy pensaríamos sobre todo en el pueblo de Israel caminando por el desierto, pero los judíos fieles también conocían el relato de Elías que escu-chamos hoy. Elías comió y bebió en el desierto, y con la fuerza de aquel alimento, el ángel del Señor lo envió en su viaje de cuarenta días y cuarenta noches (la cifra bíblica que simboliza un tiempo de preparación). De la misma manera que el alimento que recibió Elías en el desierto, Jesús le dice a su público que él es pan para la vida del mundo. Es muy importante que sigamos escuchando a Jesús después de su promesa de vida eterna, sin duda es una promesa maravillosa, pero esta "recompensa" no es la única razón para darnos un festín con el Pan de Vida. También vamos a la mesa con el fin de recibir fuerzas para el camino de la misión, de manera que el mundo entero pueda tener vida en la plenitud de Cristo. Si hemos comido el pan de vida, estamos obligados a servir a todos.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

En 1973 Juan A. Espinosa escribió la canción "Santa Ma-ría del Camino" con la cual invita a la Madre de Dios a caminar con sus hermanos y hermanas en la fe. La can-ción reta al creyente a caminar a pesar de lo difícil que puede ser y a luchar por los cambios que sólo el Reino de Dios puede realizar. En todo esto María es invitada a caminar con el creyente. En esta semana recordamos la Asunción de María al cie-lo, y lo hacemos reconociendo que además de ser Madre de Dios y madre nuestra, ella también es nuestra her-mana y compañera en el camino de la fe. Ella ha llegado a la meta de nuestra peregrinación y lo ha hecho en cuer-po y alma por un privilegio singular. Nosotros también lo haremos en los últimos días cuando nuestro cuerpo resu-cite para unirse con nuestra alma. Es en vista de los últimos tiempos que invitamos a María a descender de sus altares, regresando del cielo una y otra vez para caminar con sus hermanas y hermanos, en la fe, que tanto necesitan su ejemplo y apoyo. --Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM
