Queridos hermanos y hermanas:

Fr. John

Fifth Sunday In ordinary time February 9, 2020

[ 3 ] SAINT CLARE of ASSISI PARISH

Dear brothers and sisters:

It's been a couple of months since we started cycle A in the liturgy of the Church. And in cycle A, the gospel readings that will be accompanying us on Sundays will be taken from St. Matthew. Therefore, it is necessary to know the characteristics of this work in order to get more out of the passages of the gospel that we will be hearing during this year.

Like all the Gospels, it does not express its author’s thoughts directly. However, early in the history of the Church, Matthew wrote about the tax collector whom Jesus chose as one of his twelve disciples (Matthew 9: 9). This is the same Levi from Mark 2:14 and Luke 5:27.

On the other hand, the precise date on which it was written is unknown. Some scholars argue that it could have been written after the destruction of Jerusalem in year 70 A.D. In

addition, the Gospel of Matthew has the characteristic of not being chronologically structured and systematized.

However, Matthew evidently falls within the genre of the Gospels, and its structure is narrative or historical. In Matthew's narrative in particular, a large amount of space is dedicated to Jesus' speeches. Therefore, the theme of this Gospel is the story of Jesus, written by Matthew as an eyewitness that Jesus is the Messiah.

Also, the Gospel of Matthew focuses on the Jews, showing them that Jesus is the expected Messiah. Despite its focus on the Jews, this book clearly shows the Gentiles that salvation in Jesus is available to all nations. The Jewish character of this work is seen in the use of Hebrew terminology, and the emphasis on the role of Jesus as the "Son of David." In addition, this Gospel makes more quotes and allusions to the Old Testament than any other work of the New Testament.

As part of the structure of the book we find:

The story of the arrival of Jesus (1: 1-2: 23).

John the Baptist preparing for the appearance of the messianic kingdom (3: 1-17).

Jesus advancing his messianic kingdom (4: 1-25).

The Sermon on the mountain (5-7).

Demonstrations of the power of the Messiah: miracles (8-9).

Missionary instructions (10).

Seven parables about the Kingdom (13).

The suffering of the Messiah (16-17).

Warnings against the teachers of the law and the Pharisees (23).

The discourse of the end times (24-25).

The crucified Messiah (26-27).

The resurrection and commission of the Messiah to his disciples (28).

I invite you to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, asking the Heavenly Father to give us the grace to read, understand and savor this true gem of Divine Wisdom.

Fr. John

2020 APPEAL: “WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR?”

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And, the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

These words of Jesus remind us to love and support our neighbors in their time of need. Through the House of Charity – Bishop’s Annual Appeal, we strive to do that throughout the six counties of the Diocese of Camden.

Social, Community and Health Care Services Your generosity provides services through Catholic Charities offices in each county of South Jersey. In addition, Home and Parish Healthcare Services of the Diocese of Camden brings new life and spirit into the hearts of those we cherish the most – our elderly and disabled, along with their families and caregivers. Together, we offer support to the weak, vulnerable, and disenfranchised.

Evangelization and Faith Formation Lay leadership training, intercultural ministries, ministry with the deaf and persons with disabilities, marriage enrichment, adult faith formation, liturgical catechesis and other evangelization efforts, along with your gifts, kindle the fire of faith into a bright beacon for all to see.

Youth, Young Adult and Campus Ministries Your donation enables programs like Summer in the City, Catholic Scouting, Theology on Tap, college campus ministries and Newman Centers, and support for a growing number of parish-based Youth Ministry programs and many more activities to build community and prepare our youth and young adults for the mission that God has chosen for them.

Vocations, Seminarian & Permanent Diaconate Formation, Care of Priests Your support ensures that pastors and clergy continue to bring the light of Jesus into the world. Through prayers and support, we currently have 16 seminarians studying for the priesthood in the Diocese of Camden.

Catholic Education – “Forming minds and hearts in grace” Catholic schools are an integral part of the teaching mission of the Church. Catholic schools build faith, develop leadership ability and provide academic excellence in a safe environment. Your gift will help keep tuition affordable for families to send children to schools that will support Catholic values, develop character and provide academic excellence.

Incentives for Parish Initiatives When our parish collects its goal amount, up to 10% is returned to our parish for our local charitable needs. Additionally, 75% of

all funds received above our parish goal will also be returned to our parish to foster our charitable and ministerial work.

Now we invite all parishioners to participate in this important effort. During House of Charity Appeal Weekend, please make your sacrificial gift to help continue the mission of the Church

here in the Diocese of Camden! Our House of Charity 2020 Campaign has started,

please included St. Clare Parish

in your contributions to this campaign
