From Father Ryszard November 21, 2021 Dear Brothers and Sisters, The first American Thanksgiving was celebrated in St. Augustine, Florida on September 8, 1565. The first official proclamation of this holiday took place in Charleston, Massachusetts on June 20,1676 when the city council set June 26th as a day of thanksgiving. On October 3,1863 President Abraham Lincoln declared a National Day of Thanksgiving to be celebrated on Thursday, No-vember 26th. In 1942 President Franklin Roose-velt issued a proclamation by which the fourth Thursday in November was designated as Thanksgiving Day in the entire United States. Although not a Catholic holy day, it reminds us to be grateful for all the blessings in our life not only to God but also to other fellow human beings. A 13 century Persian poet and Sufi mystic Rumi wrote: "Wear gratitude like a cloak, and it will feed every corner of your life". An American novelist, Alice Walker stated: "Thank you is the best prayer that anyone could say". And a French writer Mar-cel Proust, encouraged his contemporaries: "Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy. They are the charming gardeners who make our soul blossom". For some, since Covid-19 is still in full swing, this year's celebration of Thanksgiving might be simi-lar to that of last year. But even though we might be separated by many miles from our loved ones, we will be united with them in spirit. Whatever your plans are for Thursday, I wish you a Very Blessed and Healthy Thanksgiving. May the good things in life be yours in abundance. I thank the Lord for you, for your support, prayers, and friendship. Thanks to Ronnie Stanley for taking me to lunch. We were joined by Barbara Zaik. It was a memo-rable day. I truly enjoyed it. Thank you also to Paul Acheson for sending me dinner. I appreciate it too. With continued blessings, Fr. Ryszard

St. Egbert Catholic School Our mission is to provide a total education;

one that will develop a child’s mind, body, and spirit.

Honoring our Veterans At flagpole on Friday, we hon-

ored some of the Veterans in our

school community. Our students

led our prayers and pledge and

then we recognized some of the

grandparents and parents of our

children. We ended our ceremo-

ny with Mrs. Norris, sixth grade

teacher, saying a prayer for all

Veterans. We thank all Veterans

and will continue to keep them in

our prayers.

Miles for the Mission Our students have continued to run “Miles for the Mission” and have donated 650 cans so far. We will deliver all the canned goods to Martha’s Mission this Friday. Thank you to all who donated to this project.

Praying for Ms. Kay Many of you may know Ms. Kay, one of our parishion-ers. She is also quite famous at our school with our children. Ms. Kay has volunteered at our school for several years until this year. This past summer, she had a brain tumor and was in and out of the hospital. At the beginning of the year, our students sent her prayers and get-well wishes. She wrote a response to our children (below). We will continue to pray for Ms. Kay while she is receiving treatment in Pennsylvania. From Ms. Kay: Thank you for the get-well letters and cards that you made me. When I read each one of them, they brought me so much joy. I had happy tears and a wonderful feel-ing within me. I hope you remember that it does matter when showing kindness to the people around you every day and to the people you have never met and may nev-er meet. Kindness means so much to the person who is receiving it, and hopefully the person showing kindness to someone, feels the same joy themselves. Sounds like a wonderful world to live in. Thank you very much for your letters and cards.

Advent Angel Tree Project: Help Provide Christmas Gifts For those in

Need

It is time again to start thinking about our An-gel Tree Project which provides Christmas gifts to local families in need. We have an Angel Tree Pro-ject Group to assist in collecting, organizing, and pre-paring Angel Tree gifts for distribution. We need VOLUNTEERS who will be available after Masses on Angel Tree Kick Off Weekend of November 27 & 28 to help record Angel sponsors and review project information with sponsors. VOLUNTEERS are needed to collect and organize Angel gifts on the drop off weekends November 27 & 28, and December 4 & 5, after all Masses, shop-pers for Angels who are not adopted (money provid-ed), gift wrappers, and distribution assistants to help carry Angel gifts to cars on Angel pick up evening Wednesday, December 15. To volunteer please call the Parish Office at 252-726-3559. ADOPTING an ANGEL: Our Advent Angel Tree will be up the weekends of November 20 & 21, and November 27 & 28, with the names of Angles hop-ing to be adopted. As in past years we know our pa-rishioners will be generous. If you are not able to shop but would like to help someone in need monetary gifts would be greatly appreciated.

Holiday Food Drive As in years past, the Parish Office will be accept-ing donations of frozen turkeys, hams, and non-perishable side dish item for those in need in our community. Donations will be distributed for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Donations can be dropped off at the Parish Office Monday through Friday during regular hours of operation.
