This devotion, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, is a time of silence spent before Jesus physically present before us in the Eucharist, placed in the monstrance and exposed upon the altar for all of us to visit and adore - a time to develop that deeper, more personal relationship with Jesus. It is the very core of our Faith and a true gift for our soul and spiritual well-being.

All parishioners are invited and encouraged to spend a Holy Hour in Adoration before the

Blessed Sacrament every Friday. Join us for First Friday Adoration this week.

Please contact Mark Donofrio at (540) 338-8133 or [email protected] if you would like to become a regular adorer, substitute or have any questions. For regular adorers who cannot make their scheduled time this month, please let Mark know so we can ensure adequate coverage.

Shepherd’s Notes

Ask the Priest Q. Why is Mary the Mother of God? –JosephA. Of all the women in the world, Mary was the most perfect of all God’s creation and therefore was chosen to become the Mother of Jesus. Since Jesus is the Son of God, Mary became the Mother of God. You can read about this in Luke 1:28-38. Q. When I pray, should I look towards the tabernacle or the crucifix? –MA. The most important part of praying is focusing one’s mind towards God. We look towards the tabernacle to recognize the real presence of Jesus in the church. When we look at the crucifix and other sacred images, they are there to help picture in our minds the mysteries of our faith. You could call them meditative aids because that’s what they are. That’s the reason why Catholic tradition promotes the use of multiple statues and sacred images in church—to help us to pray and think about God and heaven. Sometimes it’s not easy to picture spiritual things so God gave the gift of the arts (and music) to certain people help others imagine the mysteries of God and heaven. Just look at any pilgrimage brochures. Companies pick churches that have traditional paintings and statues inside for people to admire. [No one has successfully promoted a pilgrimage to visit modern/barren-looking churches that have radical designs. They feel empty and do not inspire people to pray!] Traditional music has outperformed “pop” music that gets old fairly quickly. We have chants composed about 1,500 years ago still regularly sung, played, and re-recorded to this day. Church music from Mozart, Bach, Schubert, and Beethoven from centuries ago is listened to regularly even by non-churchgoing seculars. Q. Why did Pope Francis meet last month with Bernie Sanders, a well-known radical pro-abortion, pro-same sex marriage, and presidential candidate? What message is he sending? –SBCA. As successor to the apostle Peter as pope, Bishop of Rome, and Vicar of Christ, Pope Francis is the spiritual shepherd of every single person in the world. Popes have always met with anyone regardless of the status of their souls. After all, every pope’s goal is to lead everyone to heaven even if that means meeting with people who hold views contrary to the teachings of Jesus Christ. In scripture Jesus received the same criticism for meeting with public sinners regularly to try to make them turn away from sin. “While he was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with Jesus and his disciples. The Pharisees saw this and said,‘Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?’ He heard this and said, ‘Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did not come to call the righteous but sinners” (Matthew 9:10-13). When popes meet with politicians they do not intend that as an endorsement of their political views. Predecessors of Pope Francis, St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI, have also met with politicians who hold views contrary to God by radically promoting laws favoring abortion and same sex marriage. The list includes Pres. Barak Obama, Pres. Bill Clinton, Sen. Hillary Clinton, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and many others. So do not be alarmed by media reports. By the nature of their duties, popes (and the Catholic Church in general) are apolitical and do not fa-vor political parties or ideologies. However, the Catholic Church will passionately oppose laws that are contrary to God while at the same time seek “common ground” with political leaders and lawmakers for the good of the people.

What is “Corpus Christi”? Corpus Christi (Latin for the body of Christ) is the most central belief in the Catholic faith. During Mass bread and wine are miraculously transformed into the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ. The catechism clearly defines this mys-tery in the following words: “In the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist ‘the body and blood, together w/the soul and divinity, of Our Lord Jesus Christ &, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really and substantially contained…’ it is a substantial presence by which Christ, God & man, makes himself wholly & entirely present” (CCC 1374). While some Christians believe that believing in Jesus as their Lord savior and the Bible as the most important part of their salvation, the Catholic Church in her 2,000+ years of history focuses in believing that Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is present Himself in the Holy Eucharist for us to spiritually worship and be physically united! Catholics believes literally what is written in the Gospel of John (6:53-54) when Jesus says, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day”? The only place on earth where the true flesh and blood of Jesus Christ is offered is in the celebration of the Mass. Others only offer a “symbolic” bread and wine for communion. The Catholic Church has taught since apostolic times that the Holy Communion we receive is the real presence of Jesus. What a great gift from God!

Congratulations to Stephen Cypher: Eagle Scout!

One of the most devout and active teens in our parish, Stephen Cypher, received the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout at a ceremony held at Ida Lee on May 21st. His project was to place trail markers for Ida Lee Park. Home Depot and Tart Lumber helped by donating the materials. Stephen has been very active for several years grow-ing up at Saint Francis de Sales. If he’s not on duty as an altar server (and meticulously very good at it), Stephen is either cantoring or singing with the church choir. He has also helped his mother, Sue Cypher, in her pro-life activities. I loved the quote he used from Saint John Paul II for his program back cover: “Do not be afraid. Do not be satis-fied with mediocrity. Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” The ceremony went very well and included dignitaries Sate Sen. Dick Black and Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Kristen Umstattd. Congratulations on your great accom-plishment, Stephen, and we also appreciate all the work you do in our parish! Your shepherd in Christ,Father Escalante

• Photo Directory for sale—We ordered a limited amount of parish photo direc-tories for those who want extra copies or if you did not get your picture taken. Each directory is $12. • “Blue Light Special”—Spread the word about going to confession. Since it is the Jubilee Year of Mercy, I am extending my Blue Light Special offer until the end of the extraordinary Jubilee Year (November 20, 2016). So if anyone is extra shy about confession tell them that during this special year the max penance I give is 7 Our Fathers and 7 Hail Marys for any sin!

Adult EducationFr. Mullaney will present his class on Islam in September. He has updated the course through the years with current events and information to remain timely. This serious topic will be viewed from several angles, including Mohammed's life, Islam's historical timeline, religious beliefs, and social structure. Both Western and Muslim sources will be used in order to gain a full understanding. To participate in this class, each attendee is required to sign an Agreement of Understanding before class begins. BIBLE STUDYProphets: Messengers of God’s Mercy If we consider that God is the Divine Bridegroom and the Church is his Bride, then the prophets can be seen as “spiritual marriage counselors.” They afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted, calling us to return to our covenant relationship with God. They urge us to repentance, warn us of the dangers of sin, and announce the blessings of faithful-ness. Their prophetic words speak to us even today, as they draw us closer to our heavenly Bridegroom, and show us how to share him with others. Prophets Bible Study starts June 9th! Pick up the registra-tion form at the Parish office or by downloading it from the St. Francis website www.saintfrancisparish.org. If you have questions about registration please contact James Blankenship at [email protected].
