PARISH NEWS Parish Office Closed the Week After Thanksgiving

With family being so important especially during this holiday season, several staff members will be travelling out of town for Thanksgiving. To be sure that we don't bring COVID back with us and to keep everyone safe the staff will observe an extended Thanksgiving holiday. The parish office will be

closed November 30 - December 4. The will be no Adoration during this time, and the building will be locked. There will be no printed bulletin that weekend but it will be emailed to everyone on our email list (to add your name to the list visit https://tinyurl.com/stfbull). Daily Mass will still be held and livestreamed. The December mailout bulletin will go out one week late on December 10. Please accept Father Raul's and the parish staff's best wishes for a happy Thanksgiving.

Flower Donations Needed As you may have noticed, we are reworking our landscaping around the church. The original plants and bushes had become very overgrown. We are seeking to replace our outside plants in the flower beds and are looking for donations so that we can purchase some new flowers and shrubs. Any size donation would be greatly appreciated. You can drop your donations into the collection baskets or at the Parish Office. Please make sure that there is a note referencing that the money is for flower bed donation. Thank you!!

_______________

Great Plains Food Bank: Food Drive Between COVID, the cold weather, and the upcoming holidays there are many people in our community who could benefit from a little extra help. The Social Concerns Committee will be conducting a food drive during November to benefit the Great Plains Food Bank. Please bring your canned and other nonperishable goods and place them on the table in the gathering space, and we will see that they are delivered. Thank you!

This Year’s St. Mary’s Mission Appeal Next weekend is St. Mary’s Mission Appeal. This appeal supports our 140 year-old Mission at the Red Lake Nation. Over the past ten years, SMMA donors from the Diocese of Crookston have become the single largest donor supporting Fr. Jerry Rogers’ extensive fundraising efforts to grow and maintain the elementary school and parish at St. Mary’s Mission. Fr. Jerry has also been working on a capital campaign to rebuild the parish building that burned in 2017. With all the challenges of the pandemic, your gifts are more important than ever! You can view a video and give online at www.crookston.org/smma or pick up an SMMA red and white envelope at your parish.

Calling All Lectors! Your 2021 lector prep books are available now to pick up. They will be set out in the gathering space until Thanksgiving.

Luke’s

Latest

Liturgics This weekend we end the liturgical

year in royal fashion by celebrating

Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.

Yet he is no ordinary king. His reign

and his care for us is so great that not

only did he come in human form to

show us the Father, but he also took

upon himself the entire world’s guilt

and sin---despite the numerous times

we turned away from him and

deserved to be punished. That Christ

chose to come in human form makes

the ordinary of our humanness

actually extraordinary! We can be

assured that Christ indeed is king

because of his example.

In contrast to ending the liturgical

year with a bang, we begin Advent

next weekend somber and quiet. The

joy we will experience at

Christmastime is made that much

more special because of the silent

preparation that precedes it. With

everything currently going on in our

world silence is a much-needed gift. I

challenge you to spend some time this

advent reflecting in silence. You might

think of doing so while lighting a

candle or playing some relaxing music.

What helps you find God in the

silence?

It goes without saying that this

Advent and Christmas will be unique

and challenging. Is that necessarily

bad? In some ways it certainly can

appear so. But I am also convinced

that Christ who has shared our

humanness knows what we need and

provides it for us in the most

unexpected ways. Just like the star

over the manger, or the angels’

announcement to the shepherds in the

field, Christ the king has his ways of

leading us to him…if we have the

courage to follow.

Happy early Thanksgiving!

Your companion in Christ,

-Luke

St Francis de Sales Parish

Pastoral Council Meeting

Monday, Oct 19th

7pm Parish Center

The October meeting of the parish council was held on October 19th at 7pm in the Parish

Center. In attendance were Fr. Raul, Sharon Jorschumb, Danielle Holmes, Traci Steffen,

Kelli Simonson, Shari Lee, and Bob Hawk. Absent were Brian Geffre, Irma Santos,

Francisco Valenzuela and Sr. Lucy.

The meeting was called to order by Fr. Raul at 7:05 pm with prayer.

Shari Lee presented the council with cards to sign for Father Mike Patnode and Sister

Lucy to send greetings and encouraging words to each of them.

The September council minutes were approved as read.

In old business the council revisited the discussion from last month concerning who St.

Francis is as a parish and what mission the parish has in our community. The council

looked at examples of parish mission statements and held a discussion on what kinds of

ideas we would want represented in our parish mission statement. The discussion was

followed by brainstorming and recording ideas for components of a new parish mission

statement. The discussion was tabled for the next meeting with the assignment to council

members to bring full or partial mission statements with them to the next meeting.

The council heard reports from parish committees. Sharon reported for the festival

committee that over 500 dinners were sold with a net profit of $8,856 dollars from the

dinner, silent auction and raffle tickets, only 36% less than an average year. Kelli

reported that the financial committee discussed and approved a format for the balance

sheet.

Father announced that following guidelines mandated by the state and our diocese, we

will begin serving donuts in the parish center the first weekend of November. In brief,

servers will wear masks and gloves, no one will be allowed to serve themselves, only

members from the same family group will sit at a single table and available tables will be

spaced accordingly.

Shari reported the scheduled dates of parish council meetings for the year as: November

23rd, December 21st, January 18th, February 15th, March 15th, April 19th and May 17th.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm by Fr. Raul with Prayer.
