ST. JAMES CATHOLIC PARISH NOVEMBER 30, 2014

THE

WATCHFULNESS WE NEED

Perhaps what we modern

people need most is to be

genuinely shaken, so that

where life is grounded, we

would feel its stability; and

where life is unstable and uncertain, immoral and unprincipled, we

would know that, also, and endure it. Perhaps that is the ultimate an-

swer to the question of why God has sent us into this time, why he

permits this whirlwind to go over the earth, and why he holds us in

such a state of chaos and in hopelessness and in darkness—and why

there is no end in sight. It is because we have stood here on the earth

with a totally false and inauthentic sense of security. So now, God lets

the earth resound, and now he shudders it, and then he shakes it, now

to call forth a false anxiety…

He does it to teach us one thing again: how

to be moved in spirit. Much of what is hap-

pening today would not be happening if

people were in that state of inner movement

and restlessness of heart in which man

comes into the presence of God the Lord

and gains a clear view of things as they

really are. Then man would have let go of

much that has thrown all our lives into dis-

order one way or another and has thrashed

and smashed our lives. He would have seen

the inner appeals, would have seen the

boundaries, and could have coordinated the

areas of responsibility. Instead, man stood

on this earth in a false pathos and a false security, under a deep delu-

sion in which he really believed he could single-handedly fetch stars

from heaven; could enkindle eternal lights in the world, and avert all

danger from himself; that he could banish the night and intercept and

interrupt the internal quaking of the cosmos, and maneuver and ma-

nipulate the whole thing into the conditions standing before us now.

That is the first Advent message; before the end, the world will be set

quaking. And only where man does not cling inwardly to false security

will his eyes be capable of seeing the Ultimate.

Father Alfred Delp, S.J. Father Delp (+1945) was a German Jesuit priest condemned to death by the

Nazis in Berlin, Germany.

Loving Father, during this holy season of Advent,

Keep us watchful and alert.

Fill our hearts with expectation so that,

Through the hope and tenderness of Christmas,

We may shake off our indifference.

SO SORRY TO ANNOUNCE

THE

ADVENT TALKS

ARE

CANCELLED Due to many conflicts in the parish schedule.

However, it is wonderful to have such an ac-

tive and busy parish but sometimes we are not

able to do everything. We will reschedule

with Fr. Clemence and the talks on Marriage

and Family—maybe during Lent….

Our Advent Journey with Christ In the words of Pope Francis

As we take time each day to move

along on our Advent journey to Christ-

mas and Christ, we have the opportu-

nity to reorient our lives by deepening

our intimate communion with God,

considering God’s vision of what our world is like,

rethinking our values and changing our behavior be-

cause of our relationship with God and Jesus.

(they are in the basket in the back of church today.)

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT NOVEMBER 30, 2014

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus:

Although my overall health is good my neu-

romuscular malady continues it's eleven-

year progression. Ergo, I have requested of

our Archbishop and been granted a medical

retirement (with faculties) effective Dec.1st.

I've been blessed beyond what I deserve to

have been your deacon since my ordination

on June 14, 2003 and a parishioner with my

late wife and family since Aug., 1978.

Please be assured you are in my prayers and

I hope you will remember me in your devo-

tions as well.

In Jesus' Name I bless you all,

Deacon Dennis
