Sunday, May 28, 2017 “PUT THE ‘MEMORIAL’ BACK IN MEMORIAL DAY”

To many it is merely a 3-day weekend. For some here on the East coast it is about going to the shore. For all of us it has become the unofficial start of summer. But, of course, it is actually a day set aside to honor those in our military who paid the ultimate price. So where did it come from? Memorial Day hasn’t always been around and unlike some holidays it was not created by the greeting card industry. Some excellent insights can be found in the suggested 1999 Memorial Day speech from the US Army Armylink site. Here is an enlightening excerpt from the speech. “The observance of this day was born of compassion and empathy in 1863. As the Civil War raged, grieving mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, and other loved ones were cleaning confederate soldiers’ graves in Columbus, Mississippi, placing flowers on them. They noticed nearby that the Union soldiers ‘graves, were dusty, and overgrown with weeds. Grieving for their own fallen soldiers, the Confederate women understood that the dead Union soldiers buried nearby were the cherished loved ones of families and communities far away. They cleared the tangled brush and mud from those graves as well as their own soldiers’ graves and laid flowers on them too. Soon the tradition of a “Decoration Day” for the graves of fallen soldiers spread. On May 5,1866, when the Civil War was over, Henry Welles of Waterloo, New York, closed his drugstore and suggested that all other shops in town also close up for a day to honor all soldiers killed in the Civil War, Union and Confederate alike. It was a gesture of healing and reconciliation in a land ripped apart by conflict. Sixteen years later, in 1882, the nation observed its first official Memorial Day, a day set aside to remember and honor the sacrifice of those who died in all our nation’s wars. For decades, Memorial Day was a day in our nation when stores closed and communities gathered together for a day of parades and other celebrations with a patriotic theme. Memorial Day meant ceremonies at cemeteries around the country, speeches honoring those who gave their lives, the laying of wreaths, the playing of Taps. Sadly, many Americans have lost this connection with their history. The patriotic core – the spirit of remembrance – is absent. Families might still gather for picnics, but for many of them, Memorial Day, like the military itself, is largely cut off from its historic meaning.” So have a picnic, go to the shore, or take advantage of a special sales event. Do all those and more, but take time to attend a ceremony, decorate a grave of a soldier, or set aside a moment of quiet reflection to honor those who paid the ultimate price so that we have the freedom to do all those things and so much more. Put the “memorial” back in Memorial Day

Because the need for vocations is great, Saint John Bosco has established a

vocation awareness

program involving a traveling statue. A statue of the

Sacred Heart of Jesus is traveling for one year from household to household within our parish. You are invited to bring the statue to your home for a week. *There are a few open weeks during the last quarter of this year.

This is a unique opportunity for you to have special prayer time. Usually the statue is transferred over the weekend at church. Traveling devotions help keep prayer and spirituality close to home for many. If you would like to host the Statue in your home, please fill out and return the following form to the Parish Center. You will be contacted with detailed information.

Yes. I wish to host the Sacred Heart of Jesus Statue.

Thank you from the BOTTOM of our hearts for helping babies in need.

You’re invited to a birthday party!

When? On Pentecost Sunday Where? Saint John Bosco

Why? To Celebrate the Church’s Birthday!

Pentecost is probably one of the most important days on the Church

calendar! Pentecost is the birthday of the Church! So, let’s celebrate! Wear red to

church that weekend! The priests will wear red vestments to symbolize the love of the Holy

Spirit! Be sure and stop by the tent for a hot dog or a birthday cupcake after

the 4PM Mass on Sat., June 3.

The feast of Corpus Christi is one time when our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament is exposed not just to

faithful Catholics but to all the world. Please join us for our annual Corpus Christi Procession on

Sun., June 18 immediately following the 11:00 Mass.

Three altars will be erected in the front parking lot. This is a time when Catholics can show their love for Christ in the Real Presence by honoring Him in a very

public way. It is also a wonderful way in which we can show our love for our neighbors by bringing

Our Lord and Savior closer to them.

Join us in celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima

Pope Francis has granted a plenary indulgence opportunity for the 100th Anniversary of the Fatima

apparitions. At St. John Bosco we will be offering the faithful an opportunity to gain this indulgence on the

13th of each month from May- October 2017. The requirements for this indulgence are to pray before a statue of Our Lady of Fatima solemnly exposed for

public veneration on the 13th of each month from May to October 2017 and devoutly participate in a

celebration of prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary. This must include the Our Father, the Creed and invoking Our Lady of Fatima. To obtain any indulgence, the

faithful must also fulfill the ordinary conditions: go to Confession and Communion within a week, be interiorly detached from sin, and pray for the

intentions of the Holy Father. You may join us at the formal prayer opportunities or use the booklets to pray on your own and venerate the statue on the 13th of the month May—October 2017.
