The Alumni Mourn the Loss of Their Founding Member – Diane (McAlpine) Bormke

Diane (McAlpine) Bormke died on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at her home in Grand Bay-Westfield. She had attended Saint John High School in the early 1950’s and should have graduated with the class of 1955. However, her family moved to Ottawa in her fi-nal year of High School. What a Time It Was—The Reunion of the Class of 1958

What a time it was! Then and again in 2008! The Reunion of the Class of ’58 was held from July 24-27th with a total of 97 persons in attendance (59 classmates, 5 classmates from earlier years, and

33 spouses/partners, relatives or friends). Those classmates in attendance were: Carol (Allaby) Von Richter, Gerald Angevine, Dorothy (Arseneau) Mosher, Ann (Banks) Mitton, Douglas Colwell, Fred Cook, Ruth (Copeland) McGrath, Doreen (Cossaboom) MacKenzie, Mary (Cossaboom) McCready, Barbara (Cunningham) McLeod, Gail (Currie) Wittrien, Barbara (Dow) McNiven, Deanna (Dunham) Wallace, Margaret (Dunn) Graham, Linda (Ferguson) Nielsen, Carolyn (Gaunce) Danells, Barbara (Gilchrist) Coombes, Ian Grant, Marion (Hartlin) O’Brien, James Hayden, Jane (Hazen) Tarn, Richard Henriksen, Colleen (Jones) Sutherland, Barbara (Kierstead) Weir, Ruth (Kilpatrick) Cosman, Marlene (Knox) Marks, Ellis Levine, Lois (Lingley) Sherwood, Marilyn (Lingley) Patstone, Mary Lou (Lingley) McKay, Frank Lip-sett, Joan (Lister) Button, Faith (Livingston) Sabean, David Mahony, Jacklyn (Marks) Emery, Hugh McDowell, Ian McQueen, Sandra (Morrow) MacKenzie, Ferne (Ogden) McCavour, Elizabeth (Paterson) Wilson, Patricia (Patterson) Boone, Bar-bara Pearson, Judith (Ralston) Davis, Carol (Reid)

Gregory, Susan (Roberts) Robertson, Irvine Robertson, Robert Seely, Irene (Simpson) McCarthy, Jeanice (Symes) Betts, Esther (Tippett) MacKay, Murray Walsh, Russell Webster, Ronald Weir, Bruce Whipple, Noel Wittrien, Donna (Wood) Laskey, Nancy (Wrench) Williamson, Dianne (Yeomans) Cale, Gail (Young) Dickeson. Classmates from earlier SJHS years were: Marilyn (Cormier) Gander, Sandra (Fox) Nelson, Reyn MacKenzie, Ann (Ross) Fowler, Ann Thorne.

The Reunion began on Thursday evening at the Delta Hotel with registration, reception and enter-tainment by The Cool Chicks & The Ugly Doclings. All class registrants received a “50th Anniver-sary Directory” which included the 1958 photo and yearbook write-up of each participant, current photo and up-to-date information of their lives over the last 50 years. Old pictures were posted on the walls and everyone had a great time meeting one another (many who had not seen one another in 50 years) and reminiscing. As a fund-raiser for the Alumni, tickets were sold on three donated paintings on display. Artists were: Dot (Arseneau) Mosher, Margaret (Dunn) Graham, and Harold Marks (husband of Marlene (Knox) Marks).

On Friday morning, a group led by Carolyn Danells, toured Saint John High School with former Principals, Dennis Knibb and Barry Harbinson. Friday evening (in spite of a down pour at the on-set) we boarded the Voyageur Riverboat in Saint John and cruised up the St. John River beyond the Westfield Ferry. After the cruise, we returned to the Delta for a game of guessing events of the past 50 years, and a singsong with Ron Weir at the piano.

On Saturday morning a group headed out for a tour of “new” Saint John led by a well-known city guide, Kathy Wilson (a graduate of SJHS). After another free afternoon, we gathered at the Saint John Marina in Ketepec for our reunion dinner. It was a beautiful, warm evening so our group en-joyed sitting out on the patio overlooking the water. The buffet style dinner was enjoyed especially the “Tiny Tart Dessert”. (Those in attendance will know what this means.) During the dinner, there was a time of remembrance as the names of those classmates who are deceased were read. The tick-ets were drawn for the paintings. Winners were: Dot’s painting – Doug Colwell, Marg’s painting – Marion (Hartlin) O’Brien, and Harold’s painting – Ann Thorne. A total of $1,200.00 was subse-quently donated to the Alumni from the Class of ‘58.

The Reunion closed on Sunday morning with worship at Trinity Anglican Church with the Rev. Canon Lloyd Lake and the Rev. Constance (Whittaker) Soulikias, 1959 graduate of SJHS. A former teacher, Miss Ruth Morrell, was also in attendance and it was great to see her again. Following the service, a lunch was enjoyed by all in the church hall. Then it was time to say our sad fare-wells…but plans were already in the works for another reunion in 5 years time.

From the Principal’s Desk

Saint John High School has been fortunate to have had an Alumni Association, in one form or another, since 1891. Since that time, the school has reaped many benefits from its support – from electricity and a piano to the high-tech Vernier laboratory probes and an elec-tronic drum set – all of which contribute to maintaining the high academic standards and valuable extracurricu-lar offerings for which the school is so renowned.

When I was applying to the Master’s program in1993, my interviewer, the then Head of English at UNB, en-quired as to where I taught. At my reply, “Saint John High,” his response was “Good for you! The best school in the province.” There is no doubt in my mind that he is right, and moreover, that the Alumni Associa-

tion plays a major role in our continuing success.

Alumni support enables us to stretch our budget to accommodate the “extras” which in turn permit our faculty and students to achieve high academic standards. This year, six of our teachers attended other International Baccalaureate or Advanced Placement confer-ences, subsidized through the generosity of the thousands of graduates who still identify proudly with the values of “Vita Vitalis.” Through Alumni funding, many students, both high-powered and struggling, have benefitted from new teaching technologies such as SmartBoards and digital projectors. The Physical Education program, widely sub-scribed to by both Grades 9 and 10, was able to maintain the pool to its usual high quality through the purchase of items like new lane markers. The above-mentioned electronic drum kit is a huge success, much appreciated by all the young people who fancy them-selves drummers. (The teachers appreciate the fact that, since it is electronic it can be played with earphones!) All of these gifts have contributed to SJHS’s perception as a “cutting-edge” school.

However, it is not merely the material evidence of Alumni dedication which leaves an impression on our students. The fact that so many Alumni willingly donate financially to students they may never see highlights the true strength of the SJHS experience – tradi-tion. Whether it is the white dress and suit attire for graduation or the triumphant recita-tion of Ringo, or the proud records of the Red and Grey, I believe each of our graduates leaves the school with a sense of being part of something substantial and significant.

On behalf of the most recent crop of Greyhound students and staff, I would like to thank the Alumni the world over for their continued support. I would also like to thank and congratulate Mr. Richard Thorne on undertaking the daunting task of filling the shoes of the late Diane Bormke, for whom the Alumni News was such a labour of love for many years.

CORRECTION -AND OUR APOLOGIES!

WILLIAM PERKINS (CLASS OF 1968) is alive and well. We pub-lished an obituary of him in the 2008 Alumni News, confusing him in the Saint John Telegraphs “Records of Deaths” with another William Perkins who died in September 2007. This other William Perkins was

not a graduate of Saint John High. His sister, Norma (Perkins) Logue (1947) wrote to set the record straight. Our living William Perkins resides in Saint John and has sent a substantial donation to the Alumni Fund!

Anyone remember Peripatetic's, a club which read plays, poetry and had guests who involved participants. Pictured here are John Kerrigan (1973) and John Miller (1974) with David Carter (a teacher 1964 - 1970) and, in this guise, an urban planner with the City of Saint John.

Remembering Ortona 2008 In November 2008, 6 SJHS students accompanied by their teacher, Maryanne Le-well (1993), participated in a national student tour to the bat-tlefields of Ortona, Italy to par-ticipate in ceremonies of remem-brance. There were 1400 stu-dents from PEI, Ontario, Mani-toba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC. We were

the only representatives from New Brunswick!

The students had researched former SJHS student soldiers before we left, and we were able to visit those graves in the Moro River Cemetery. It was a moving ceremony, dur-ing which one of our students read the Act of Remembrance to represent all the students there. It was quite a sight to see 1400 stu-dents, each standing by a grave at Moro River, all remembering the sacrifices made by soldiers not much older than the students are now.

After these ceremonies, all students and ac-companying adults walked from Moro River Cemetery into the town of Ortona, a distance of a few (rather hilly!) kilometers. The resi-

dents of Ortona cheered as the students walked by, waving and making the Canadian students feel extremely welcome. We also visited Monte Cassino Ceme-tery. One of our students, Brandon D'Souza, had pictures that his grandfa-ther had taken during his service in the war at Cassino. It was fascinating to compare the pictures from 1944-45 with the terrain where we stood - and watch as Brandon realized he was walking in his grandfather's footsteps!

We were also able to visit some of the sights of Rome in the week we spent in Italy including a special mass arranged in St Peter's Basilica. It was a memorable educational experience for the students to under-stand and appreciate the events of the Second World War in a different context, by seeing the continued effects of the war in the Ortona area. I'm proud of the respect they showed during the week - I heard several comments about our students behaviour and respectfulness. A huge thank you to the alumni and especially to Mr Knibb for your sup-port of our school's participation on this tour!

Dear Alumni Committee

On May 8th, 2009 a group of nine will be heading to Guate-mala to work with the people in an area known as Quetzal-tenango. This team is made up of six alumni and one teacher from SJHS.

One of the things we will be doing while there is visiting a school to help out in anyway we can. The graduating class of ’09 have been raising money to help support kids in this area to go to school. They also will be helping to purchase uniforms which will have SJHS on them. This will be a

wonderful way for the graduating class to leave a lasting legacy for these peo-ple.

The Director of the school in Quetzaltenango is so excited about this partnership that we are bridging between the two schools. The Director is looking forward to us coming and while there he wants us to paint the logos from both schools on a wall in their school to constantly remind them of SJHS and how grateful they are for the support shown to-wards them.

This is such and exciting venture and we are hoping you will join with us in support- ing, caring and giving for the many children we will come in contact with while in Guatemala. We look forward, upon our return, to come in and share our experiences with you. Francis Hughes and the Return of Canadian Football 1970

Fran Hughes, fondly known as “The Bear”, taught school for 33 years. He played university football for UNB, Fredericton for four years as a tight end. In his second year he was the second leading scorer in the league. He taught and coached at St. Malachy’s with Fran McHugh, founder of that school’s football pro-gram. Dennis Knibb, Principal of Saint John High, saw the need to introduce football into the school and sent Jack Brownell, Athletic Director, to recruit Fran Hughes. Fran accepted and joined the staff of SJHS in 1970, retiring in 1999, when he also gave up the Head Coach position. He is well loved and respected by his former players as he gave up many week-ends for them. He also coached his three sons, Andrew (1984), Philip (1985) and Eric (1988). The “Ten Man Varsity Football Runner-Up” trophy is named after him.

On Monday, February 9, 2000 Barry Ogden arranged a special school assembly to honour Francis Hughes and brought along Fran McHugh and Dennis Knibb to join the celebration. McHugh commented that football was an activity which involved at least fifty students – “it was about character building.” Hughes thought it was amazing that youngsters who didn’t know him would give him a standing ovation. Knibb felt it was a tribute to the teachers who have given so much of their time to coaching and other extra-curricular activities. The Saint John High

Team has had its ups and downs. In November 2008 Fran Hughes accom-panied a large group of supporters to the Provincial Championship game in Moncton where Saint John High lost to Harrison Trimble. Burns MacMillan (1972) read the Saint John news-paper article on the Francis Hughes tribute and wrote “Congratulations – recognition well deserved. I clearly recall being summoned to the Principal’s office in the fall of 1969 in the wake of my conducting an unofficial sur-vey about interest in Canadian football. I specifically remember you asking if we were losing students to “the school up the street (St. Mac’s) because we didn’t have a football program. Your efforts went a long way toward creating opportunities for young student athletes like me.

“neat”! I know Ernestine because I graduated with her in 1946 and I knew Partridge Island because I lived on Westmorland Road and could see it from our house. I disliked the fog horn very much.”

Bruce Robertson (1966) wrote from Quis-pamsis – “After a brief stint with the Royal Bank following gradua-tion, I attended Teacher’s College, St. Thomas University (B.Ed.) and UNB (M.Ed.). I completed a thirty one year career in northern New Bruns-wick as teacher, coach and School and District administrator. Roles included principalships at Lord Beaverbrook, Campbellton Middle, and Alaqsite ‘W Giptu schools, as well as District Supervisor in Campbellton, Dalhousie and Bathurst region. In retirement I am treasurer of the NB Society of Retired Teachers and Co-editor, with my wife Carol, of “Reflections” magazine. I want to mention my very fond memories of High School, particularly my senior year. You made a lasting impression on a kid from the Rifle Range. As a novice school administrator I re-call too often asking myself ‘How would Mr. Knibb handle this situation?’ – a practice which stood me in good stead.” Bruce and Carol have retired to Quispamsis where their focus is family, golf, travel gardening and vol-unteering.

Roderick MacLeod (1940) wrote from Brace-bridge Ontario just prior to his death in Au-gust, 2008. “Hal Snow (1942) and I do some reminiscing about Saint John High during our annual golf game. Great fun!”

Paul McKnight (1966) sent a short note from London, Ontario in No-vember 2008. “I appre-ciate the Alumni news-paper – always brings back good memories. All is well here. I am working for a large U.S. Engineering consulting firm (55,000 employees) and teach part-time in the Economics Depart-ment of the University of Western Ontario. I am also writing a chapter for a text book on Airline Management. My kids have grown and gone, but live close by. My wife weathered cancer treatments in 2007 – so far so good. We travelled to the UK (Wales) and Europe this year.

WE GET LETTERS (AND E-MAILS)!

Brian Warnock (1964) e-mailed from Wickenburg, Arizona in March 2009 – “Wanda and I are still living in Wickenburg outside of Phoenix, but now have a summer home in Barrie, Ontario and invite any classmates coming either way to drop in for a visit. I am pleased to announce that our younger daughter, Krista Car-man, just became a name partner in our law firm, Warnock, MacKinlay and Carman, and will manage our office in Pres-cott, Arizona. I am now enjoying the nirvana of semi-retirement, but continue to manage our office in Phoenix directly in the winter and as a commuter from Ontario in the summer. I still spend more time in court than I would like. Wanda and I have “discovered” North Dakota and stop there for a few weeks on our way home from Ontario each fall to spend time chasing pheasant with our bird dogs.” [email protected]

Eileen (Gandy Mersereau (1941) sent a brief note from Nepean, Ontario – Thank you so much for the Alumni News. I read it all and tick off names as I go along. It brings back so many happy memories of people and places. Keep up the good work.” Father John-Paul Wadlin (1959) wrote in October 2008 from Ridgecrest, California: ... I was pleased to read that you received more than $40,000.00 last year, and delighted to learn that it was used to provide new equipment for SJHS and its 1100 students. Well done! I remember my typing classes on those old manual typewriters, and how the keys would jam and get ink all over my fingers as I untangled them. But the training I received on them has stood me in good stead all these many years, this letter being an example of the lasting benefits. No apologies are needed for any typos in your newsletter, My dear secretary publishes one announcement and two worship bulletins each week, as well as a monthly newsletter, an our motto (once its published) is: “It is what it is!” Despite being proofread by a retired expert, we manage to print all sorts and conditions of errors, not the least of which was: “If you like to sin, please join our praise team.” … Leonora (Murchison) Ring (1941) wrote in March 2009 about her four brothers and one sis-ter, all of who graduated from Saint John High. John Murchison (1935) and Charles (1936) are deceased. Frank Murchison (1939) lived in Ontario and Quebec, then retired to the Saint John River. He continued to live there after the death of his wife until it was evident he should not be living alone. For the last four and half years, we have been living winter months in Quispamsis and summer in PEI, our parents’ home province. The other two Murchison’s are Jim (1943) who lives in Calgary and Mary (Murchison) Purdy (1945) who lives with her hus-band, Thomas Purdy (1946) in Point Prim, Belfast PEI and Florida. Stuart Carscadden (1936) wrote a brief not to Sherry Golding (1981), the new Vice-Principal of Saint John High School, in October 2008. “What a delight to receive the SJHS pins and card with the school crest, only a caring teacher would hear my plea on a holiday weekend. I entered SJHS in 1933, the new building of 1932. We were indeed “O fortunate quorum Iam moenia surgunt”. We were blessed with excellent teachers, and you have demonstrated that such teachers still exist today”. Stuart lives in Halifax.

Carol Wilson (1960) (used to be Mrs. Neil) – On February 23, 2007 she became Mrs. Schultz and recently sent this attractive photograph from

Barbara (Lewell) Wagner (1946) wrote from London, Ontario last July – “Thank you very much and keep sending the Alumni News which I always find interesting to read. In this 2008 issue I was pleased to read and keep Ernestine (Doherty) Smith’s poem “Partridge Island”. It is so

Elizabeth (Burnham) Lowe (1933) wrote from Rothesay, NB in October – “I was interested to read in the recent Alumni News of the visit some High School students will make to the Battlefields at Ortona, Italy. I was a nursing sister in a Canadian Army Hospital in Sic-ily at that time – Nov. 1943 and remember Major Bruce Lawson who was also in the Princess Louise Dragoon Guards, arriving in a Jeep over broken roads to pay me a visit. After a couple of days they were on their way back to join in the attack on Ortona. Bruce wrote to tell me that Hal Parker was killed in action shortly after their return from Sicily. Bruce was later killed in the Battle for the Gothic Line. I was able to visit the temporary cemeteries when I was stationed in Rome. Hun-dreds of young Canadians gave the supreme sacri-fice during these battles.

A few years ago I toured many of the Ca-nadian cemeteries in Sicily and Italy. They are beautifully kept and the caretakers could show us proudly the grave of almost any soldier we named. It was a great privilege for me to have been with the First Canadian Field Hospital to follow the first invasion by Canadian Troops into enemy territory. It will be for these High School students an experi-ence they will never forget.” (Editor’s Note: Please see the report of the High School students who visited Ortona in this issue of the Alumni Newsletter page 4.)

David Dalzell (1939) sends large donations from Victoria, BC but no information on his life! However, in July 2008 he did write “Live in the Present, Look to the Future, and always Remember the Past.” Sound Advice!

Roberta (Ferguson) Gray (1944) wrote in June 2008 when she was looking to move from her apartment in East Saint John. “I enjoyed immensely the recent Alumni Newsletter. It was informative of so many of our graduates – so many successful. High School speaks for itself – its students were so outstanding and its teachers so caring. I am speaking especially of Miss Bustin, my home room teacher who pushed me through Grade XI after I had missed the last two months of Grade X through illness. Dr. Jessie Lawson was the one who helped me through Grade XI on trial. She made it all possible!”

Dorothy (Currie) MacIntosh (1936) wrote from Ottawa in March 2009 “I guess I could lay claim to a bit of fame – for example, going to my High School Graduation Dance with Charlie Lynch (1935), the outstanding journalist of World War Two – and having my portrait painted by well-known artist Jack Humphrey (1917). I hear the painting is hanging in the Saint John Art Gallery. Apart from all that I have had a busy life. I had five lovely children who all passed through the portals of higher learning. We have lived in Ottawa for over fifty years and have enjoyed being a part of such an exciting and beautiful city. I worked at Carleton University for eighteen years after the children grew up. Some of my present activities are telephone convenor for our Probus Club and co-ordinator for our Cen-tennial Bridge Club. Would love to hear from any of the 1936 graduates.” Dorothy MacIn-tosh 202-2951 Riverside Drive, Ottawa, ON K1V 8W6

Dr. R. Mark Sadler (1971) After a distin-guished career as President of the Student Council, ca-pable actor (MacDuff) and outstanding athlete, Mark gained an MD at Dalhousie University and practises in Halifax. He wrote last July “ I note in the 2008 edition of the Alumni News that rugby coach, Paul Richard-son, intends to visit Saint John in 2009. Plus David

McPherson’s well deserved Hall of Fame award. I have e-mailed David to see if there are any plans for a reunion of the 1970 England-Wales Rugby tour. It might be a good thing.”

Bruce S. MacGowan (1950) – our most gener-ous benefactor who regularly sends a substantial cheque and a small note from Templeton International in Toronto. Last December he wrote briefly: “I hope every-thing is well with Saint John High. All is well here, except for the economy, markets and the psychological state of the public!”

William Cosman (1938) sent a letter out of the blue in March 2009 from Dorval, Quebec. He had never been on the Alumni mailing list, but came across an old newsletter. He wrote: “I con-fess that I am 87 years old, or as William Butler Yeats expressed it – ‘old and gray, and full of sleep and nodding by the fire.’ I first heard those lines and many others under the gentle encour-agement of a wonderful SJHS poetry teacher whose interest and kindness I still remember, although her name I have forgotten.” (Editor’s Note: Jessie Lawson? Barbara Dobson?) We wrote back enclosing a copy of the 2008 news-letter, and his 1938 Class Prophecy “Bill Cos-man, a noteworthy grad, fiddles on his High School Strad”. Back came a full biography –

After graduation from Saint John High in 1938, on the advice of my Poetry Teacher, I en-rolled at Mount Allison University from which in 1942 I gained a B.A. cum laude with first class honours in Philosophy. I then served in World War Two as a Captain in the Canadian Paratroop Corps. After the war I continued by study of Philosophy at the University of Toronto in the post graduate program. I then worked nineteen years for the National Film Board, fol-lowed by private business, followed by several years work for St. Mary’s University in Halifax. I ended up as Director of Education for the Cor-rectional Service of Canada. After my retire-ment in 1984, in cooperation with the Interna-

Jim Goodwin (1948) and Joan (Fraser) Goodwin (1949) wrote from Orillia, Ontario. “Sorry we were unable to attend the class of 1948 sixtieth reunion. We had scheduled a U.S. trip for August, thinking the reunion would be in July. Hopefully there were lots there and all had a good time. We hope to be able to attend the Grand Reun-ion in 2010.” (Editor’s Note: An invitation had been sent to Joan for her class sixtieth reunion in August 2009.)

Connie (Wyman) Orr (1948) came all the way from Richmond, BC for her six-tieth reunion and wrote: “I want to thank David and Claire (Chambers) Moir for a job well done. It was good to see so many faces even though I couldn’t remember all of them. It’s amazing how Saint John has changed – all for the best. Everywhere you go

you see an improvement.”

Constantce (Belyea) Dunphy (1947) wrote: “I enjoy the Alumni News and look forward to the paper. I had to sell our home after my husband died. We had 30 acres and it got too much for me to handle. I am now in an apartment building in Fredericton but I miss the coun-try and the open fields. “

Connie (March) James (1941) wrote in November 2008 from North York, Ontario: “It is that time of year when I especially think of Saint

John High where I spent some of the happiest years of my life. I enjoy receiving the newsletter which keeps me up to date on the activities of the school. But it saddens me when I read the obituaries and recognize the names of friends. I keep well by exercising every morning and have for years. Yesterday I was out raking leaves. I have not mil-lions, but billions, as I have five big maple trees on my property. However, I hire some-one with a blower when the leaves are all down, and he also cleans the eavestroughs.”

John McKinney (1971) His wife Mary Ellen wrote a note of appreciation in March 2009. “This note is long overdue after many years of reading John’s newsletter and quietly (sometimes not so quietly) admiring your persevering dedication to SJHS and its students. I’m actually the one who makes the donations on John’s behalf, because of your long standing commitment and the warm and gracious letters of appreciation we receive from you. I am an alumna of Fredericton High School (1972), and I don’t know if FHS even has an Alumni Fund!” The McKinney’s live in Frederic-ton.

Gerald McRae (1950) sent a substantial donation from East Saint John in June 2008. After our reply and letter of thanks, he wrote in November: “I joined the navy, sailed on a minesweeper and became an electronic technician rather than a mechanic. After leaving the Navy I joined NBTel where I spent thirty three years, retiring as a manager in the Engineering Department. My brother Bernard McRae, who graduated with e in 1950, passed away in 1990. He had been a Works Superintendent with the City of Saint John. I at-tended a SJHS graduation (my wife’s grandson in 2007) and that made me see the benefit of an Alumni Association.”

Professor Andrew Garrod (Teacher 1962 – 1978) wrote from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire thanking the Alumni for the newsletter and the write-up on the Gala Tribute Dinner in May 2007. “I’m just about to embark on my last year of teaching at Dartmouth though I will stay on as Directory of Teacher Edu-cation for 2009 – 2010. With luck, I’ll be directing a play in Bos-nia this coming summer.” Andrew gained fame in many drama productions in Saint John in the 1960’s and 1970’s. He now has an international reputation, offering Shakespeare in the Marshall Islands and in Europe.

E. Lorne Richardson (1970) was President of the Student Council, the great impersonator of Premier Louis J. Robichaud and an honours graduate. He is now a

pharmacist in Ottawa and writes in February 2009: “I feel that I grew up in the best part of Lancaster, had the best teachers, had the best family, and have met the great diversity of people that prepared me for thirty years in Ottawa. On September 12, 2009, I am orga-nizing a tribute for one of Saint John High’s greatest students, my brother, Dr. John Richardson (1966). During his three years of high school, he had three Principals, Dr. Ar-thur Harrison (1946-1964), William Ward (1964 – 1965) and Dennis Knibb (1965-1992). His class mates included Tom Gillis, Rod Cox, Chris Loomer. I never forgot Saint John. I am saddened by the demise of the Jewish Community. Take a moment and remember the wonderful students who went to SJHS. Sam Davis (1931) stayed but most of his children left. I actually served Mr. Davis as a pharmacist in Ottawa early in 1980. I will be at the class of 1969 reunion in July, yes, I know that I graduated in 1970, but I want to find out if Sharon (Thomas) Wilson ever noticed me. I know I’ll meet Vivian (Young) James and Gerry Maher. I remember being called to the “Office” be-cause I skipped classes one Friday afternoon to go to Fredericton to see the Greyhounds play in the Provincial Basketball Tourney. That afternoon at the Legislature, I met J. C. Van Horne, Richard Hatfield, Brenda Robertson, Rod Logan and the newly elected MLA from Kent County, Alan Graham, fa-ther of the present NB Premier, Shawn Gra-ham. I also still remember the day – how Miss Carter was upset that I made “82” on the French Matriculation exam when she had given me “60” as a school mark. Oh well!...”

Dawson Winchester (1946) sent this photo by e-mail with the following text:

“Students in the woodworking shop at Arthur Voaden Sec-ondary School here in St. Thomas, Ontario built a storage shed in our backyard so that we could better store

many of the items filling up our garage. We paid $1200.00 for the 10’ X 8’ shed, but the painting was left to yours truly. I chose the colours red and grey. What other colours, Continued on page 15

pray tell, would a former SJHS student choose?”

Dr. Murray Wanamaker (Teacher 1949 – 1950) was educated at Acadia University, gained an M.A. at Queen’s and a Doc-torate from the University of Michigan. After teaching at SJHS, New Albert and the Junior High, he joined the English Department at Acadia for fourteen years, then in 1966 transferred to the University of Winnipeg for twenty years. He now lives in Surrey, BC and lost his wife, Frances (Lipsett) Wanamaker (1944) last summer. He writes: “Wanamakers and Lipsetts have a long connection with SJHS. My mother, Ethel Davis, graduated in 1901, a time when few young women went so far with their schooling.”

Charoltte McGill (1971) wrote: “The other night we were talking to friends about my narrow back-ground in the North End and how my experience at SJHS made the difference. I was born in Sussex and

didn't move to SJ un-til I was eight and it was quite a shock. I never really liked Saint John as a place until Phyllis Knox came back and showed me some dif-ferent aspects of it. But, being in-volved with Drama and Music there gave

me an understanding of what one might find beyond the confines of the sulphurous city. I was truly hon-oured to be included in that trip to Stratford [Editors Note: Students and teachers made several summer safaris to the Stratford Festival in the late 1960’s and early 70’s] and I have vivid memories. The dress, my red hot pants, away from home for the first time - but truly, it was visiting the Wardrobe Department, and seeing a huge Shakespearean cloak whose brocade stage effect was created with gold spray paint over different shapes of pasta. Magic! And Janos Starker.” …”[Husband] Chris and I attended the Donors' Dinner at the Bea-verbrook on May 8th and when I walked up the stairs, I said to myself, ‘I wonder if I'll see anyone I know.’ Behold Wayne Burley, with whom I go all the way back to Alexander School!” Wayne Burley also was in the class of 1971 and served as the Stu-dent Council Treasurer that year firmly putting Stu-dent Council finances in the black, a position in which they have remained to this day!

SAINT JOHN HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR TO PERFORM AT THE LINCOLN CENTER

} After a successful audition, the Saint John High School Concert Choir has been invited to compete in the 11th Annual New York Choral Festival held at the Lincoln Center, one of the world's greatest stages, in March 2010. Sixty stu-dents will travel to New York as ambassadors of Saint John High School, Saint John, New Brunswick, and Canada while proudly representing their country in this International Competition. For many years in the NB Music Festival, the SJHS choir has won awards in-cluding the Kiwanis Centennial Plaque for highest ranking high school choir. Now a greater challenge lies ahead. The prestigious Lincoln Center, home to the Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic and Julliard, is the center of performing arts in New York. Our youth will participate in workshops with

world class clinicians and sing in a com-bined choir with youth from around the world. Beyond what promises to be a life altering musical opportunity, preparing for this festival will increase students' self worth, team building skills, and national pride as they travel together as ambassadors of Canada. The trip is scheduled for March, 2010 and

fund raising has begun. Any contributions will assist in offsetting these costs. Sponsors will be named on the Lincoln Center Playbill, t-shirts, travelling ban-ner and any other public acknowledgements. In addition, each will receive a per-sonal invitation to be guests of honor at our upcoming gala! If you are interested in contributing to the NYC Choir trip, then cheques may be sent to: Darlene Nickerson 490 Woodward Avenue Saint John, N.B. E2K 5N3    Cheques may be made payable to: Minister of Fi-nance Please include in the memo: SJHS NY Choir Tour. Donations of Publicly-Listed Securities to Public Charities Donations to registered Canadian charities are eligible for a charitable donations credit. For individuals with cumulative donations to any charity above $200.00 in a year, the credit in New Brunswick is calcu-lated as 46.84% of the donation amount. When a taxpayer donates to an eligible charity securities listed on a prescribed stock exchange (or certain other securities such as units in mutual funds), the capital gain ac-crued on the securities would normally be included in income at an inclusion rate of 50%. However, to encourage additional donations of listed publicly-traded securities to charitable organizations and public foundations, the government has reduced the capital gains inclusion rate for such donations to zero, allow-ing a full donation credit with no additional income tax on the gain on the securities which should have been paid if securities were sold. This can be a great way to reduce your taxed on capital gains. If you need further information or some assistance in making this form of donation, you can contact Peter Logan, CA at 506 633 9575 of TEED SAUNDERS DOYLE & CO.

Canadian History 121 1974 – 1975

Every once in a while a small item on the news will jog a memory of some aspect of my thirty years in teaching. It is those memories which were stirred this winter when a National Post article caught my attention. It read as follows: “Maintain oversight, Dickson warns: G20 To Meet” by Eoin Callan, Financial Post published Thursday, February 5, 2009. “Canada's top financial watchdog yesterday cautioned world leaders against watering down supervision of banks amid a rush to develop an overarching ap-proach to tracking systemic risks in global markets. Julie Dickson, the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, said a broad drive to improve "system-wide" safeguards "should not [be] about diluting the supervisory focus on individual bank risk." The cautionary note came as finance chiefs prepare for a series of international gather-ings in the lead-up to a summit of the Group of 20 nations in Lon-don.”

It couldn’t be quiet Julie Dickson from my 121 History class who was cautioning world leaders or could it? I remembered an ex-change when we were “test driving” a simulation game called “Caucus” as part of the Canadian Studies Project. As was intended by the simulation two classmates, Doug Foster and Steven D’Arcy were quite vocal in their regional views when suddenly, Julie Dick-son stood up (not having said much prior to this) and took a verbal strip off them when she displayed her strong national views. The class lapsed into silence partly because this young woman gave a strong, balanced, mature view of the country and partly because she had never exercised her authority before. It pays to be a person of few words but when the time comes to speak, world leaders better listen!

I thought I would see what I could find on the internet about these three individuals from the class of 1975. From websites came the following infor-mation.

Julie Dickson was appointed Superinten-dent of Financial Institutions in July 2007, for a seven-year term. As Superintendent, Ms. Dickson serves on the Council of Gov-ernors of the Canadian Public Accountabil-ity Board, the board of directors of the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation, and the board of directors of the Toronto Leadership Centre. Ms. Dickson has a Masters of Economics from Queen’s Uni-versity and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours Economics) from the University of New Brunswick.

Subsequent to the preparation of this article, the Globe & Mail Re-port on Business, May 2009 called Julie Dickson “the most powerful woman in Canadian banking” in her role of OFSI (Office of the Su-perintendent of Financial Institutions) in Ottawa. Dennis Knibb wrote that she began her career at the Federal Department of Finance in the early 1980’s. She worked on revisions to the Canada Bank Act and helped in the formation of the OFSI after the collapse of two western Canadian banks in 1985. She has faced the economic melt-down of the past year with calm assurance, maintaining the stability of Canada’s chartered banks. She oversees more than 450 banks and insurers nationally and supervises 1350 private pension plans. The experts say she is quiet but firm. When she speaks, the bankers take notes!

Ross Britton (1983) is head of the South City Housing Co-op in Saint John. He has been suc-

cessful in putting the finances to-gether for a low income housing project that will provide 21 apart-ments at 66 Queen Street. The Federal Government gave $630,000.00 to off-

set construction costs and the Province will pro-vide $920,000.00 in rental supplements. Barry Ogden (1975) has been a teacher at Saint John High School since 1983. He has always been an advocate of publicly funded recreation to help reduce social problems (Crime) and to increase the health of our citizens. He has now been appointed chair of the City’s Recreation and Leisure Services Committee. One of his priorities is the upgrading of the Canada Games Stadium at the University of New Brunswick, Saint John. It was built in 1985 and twenty five years later needs refurbishment. Barry is keen on artificial turf for sports fields so that they can be used 18 hours a day for ten months of the year. The bill will be $3,500,000.00 to be shared by the University, the City of Saint John and the Province. Barry has headed the Marco Polo Project to build a scaled-down replica of the world famous clipper ship built in Saint John in 1851. He helped to get the annual “Marigolds on the Main Street” planting on the median and to co-ordinate food bank drives by lo-cal high school students. The local newspaper

hails him as a “recreation champion in our midst.” In the Saint John High School community he has long been a supporter of local history within the

Social Studies curriculum. He has also leant his considerable powers of support to the hockey and football programs over the years cheering on such coaching stalwarts as Fran Hughes and Derek Bury. Barry has always provided recognition for others but rarely been the recipient of praise for his own ef-forts. Jeff Taylor (1998) President of the Student Council (1997-1998) recently received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Toronto. Nancy Morrison (1979) a softball official from Quispamsis NB won the “Official of the Year” award at the 15th Annual Pitney Bowes Sports Award. Chris and John Likourgiotis (1980) joined the family business, the Mediterranean Res-taurant on Rothe-say Ave-nue, after elaving school. It has an established reputation for superior meals. The brothers have added a new fea-ture, the Blue Olive Bar, which provides live music by prominent artists like Ron Sexsmith and Bruce Guthro. Their business is thriving. Michael McDonald (1984) has been in the entertainment business for a number of years, working as a key grip (chief lighting and rig-ging technician) on films shot in Southern New Brunswick. Now he has moved into writ-ing and directing short films. He recently teamed up with Marcel Gallant of Moncton to produce a 22 minute film called “Magnifier”, set in Saint John to portray a small town in America around 1969. He is confident it will take film festi-

vals by storm when it is released later this year. Michael is starting a campaign to save the Paramount Theatre on King Square, Saint John which has been closed for a number of years. “It can’t come back exclusively as a movie theatre. It would have to be multi-functioning.” Philip Lee (1981) is director of Journalism at St. Thomas University in Fredericton, and

author of two books, Home Pool – the Fight for Atlantic Salmon and Frank - the Life and Politics of Frank McKenna. He has now written an auto-biographical work Bit-tersweet dealing with

Now he has gained the distinction of becoming President of the World Medical Association – the first Canadian to hold the three year office which will begin in October 2009. He states that growing up in Saint John taught him about giving

Grace Craft (1949) spent many years as a broadcaster for CHSJ Radio in Saint John. One of the many tasks she undertook was the reading of pledges phoned into the Empty Stocking Fund broadcast at Christmas Time each year. She has continued the practice in retirement. This past December she was back at her alma mater in the auditorium of Saint John High, doing her tradi-tional readings for the fifty-fourth time.

Michael Bruce (1971) works in the insurance business in Saint John.
