The Log May 2019

Incorporated April 4, 1975

At the end of March, we tried a new cruise and social venue when we ventured over to the Jensen Beach Causeway. This cruise and cookout proved to be a very popular event with over 50 people and five SLSC boats in attendance. We certainly will have this on the agenda for future outings. Check out the pictures on the SLSC web site —thanks to Jay Seeley!

Coming up in May is the ‘Cerulean Cup’, which is the first of our three annual ocean races. The ‘Cerulean Cup’ is the longest running ocean race we do. It was conceived by Reed Haslam, skipper of the Bristol 35 Cerulean, back in 1993. Reed was an avid racer who longed to have an annually scheduled ocean race. The club had none at the time. Reed took the initiative and organized the first ‘Cerulean Cup’ and donated the trophy named in honor of his boat. The rest, as they say, is history! Now we have three ocean races each year in addition to the many river regattas. The SLSC is indebted to Reed for getting this started.

For our smaller boats, there is also the ‘Blue Skies Regatta’ in the North Fork running concurrently with the ‘Cerulean Cup’ race.

The ‘Spring Fling Regatta’ was held April 13, 2019. The weather was beautiful and sunny, but a bit gusty with winds 12-18 mph out of the east-south-east and gusts above 20 mph. We had a smaller turnout than expected as some members were cruis-ing else where, or headed north for the summer.

We had a great start with three boats reefed down and fighting to cross the starting line with some good action. We had great competition between Whisper and My Weigh switching positions around the course with Wild Rice on their stern.

In an attempt to gain on the competition, one of the boats took a long tack only to run aground. To make up for the delay, that boat took a long tack to the other side of the River only to run aground. Once getting them free again they sailed for the finish line. As they crossed the finish line the committee noticed the finish line mark did not reap-pear as they had hooked the finish line mark and was taking it with them. Some how they still came in second! Trophies were presented aboard Cheshire Cat. Once again the weather cooperated with gusty conditions and it was a great day to be out on the River.

The Finishers -

Cruising J&M Fleet are:

1st – WHISPER Larry Bryant (F) 1:17:15 (C)1:04:49

2nd – MY WEIGH Jack Molinelli (F) 1:30:32 (C)1:14:04

3rd – WILD RICE Richard Rice (F) 1:41:07 (C)1:20:39

Wild Rice

April’s ‘12 Pack’ Race provided a perfect day to be on the water. We were fortunate to have a nice breeze from start to finish.

The race had six competitors, including a new participant, My Boat.

Warlock was first off the line and held the lead the entire race.

Salty Dogs, My Boat and Sloop John B were bunched up going downwind approaching #7 mark, which made for a fun rounding!

Whisper went past the middle of the pack at #6 mark and headed for #5 mark, but never could catch Warlock.

Salty Dogs had to hold off

My Boat for a close finish!

Tom Mestrits’ sailing class went

“LIVE” while participating in this

race on ‘My Boat’!... Congrats to

you all!

Challenge Update

- Tom Mestrits

The ‘Green Flash’ trophy is being engraved with our Club’s present record holders.

Monohull, under 27’ WL, Warlock, 1hr. 5min. 12sec., Stephen DeLise

Monohull over 27’ WL, Freedom, 1hr. 1min. 3sec., Carolyn Zytaruk-Dugger

One Design No Challenge

Multihull Cruising, Mambo, 1hr. 20min. 0sec., Glenn & Susan Strickland

Multihull Racing Dream On, 32min. 10sec., Bill Roberts

We are having a ‘Green Flash Champion’ flag made for each record holder, which are being presented at our May 6th monthly meeting.

Regarding the photos above, Mike Brescher and I went out on his Boston Whaler to take these amazing pictures. When Dream On caught the wind right, they pulled away

from us and we had a hard time keeping up. We were doing 19 knots. Note, there are no white caps, the wind was around 10-12knots.

It is with sad hearts for us to say that Bill Roberts passed away peacefully on April 12th at his Palm City home on the Saint Lucie River. The photos above are of the last

time Bill was out sailing. Note he is at the helm.

In dedication to his sailing accomplishments, we are inscribing the ‘Green Flash’ Chal-lenge Trophy “In Memory of Bill Roberts, Dream On”.
