Fr. Joe’s Jottings

It is officially the season of autumn when vegetation begins to turn colorful and the chloroform drains. Although it was exceptionally dry this summer, the grass (and weeds) at the parish survived because of the irrigation system. Every year the Catholic Daughters and some others take the time and energy to add to the beauty with flowers. This year Inez Weinheimer funded the addition of “misters” in one of the flower beds. That addition reduced the labor of moving hoses which was a blessing. At Mount Calvary Cemetery, the Knights of Columbus applied their great labor force to address the vegetation that had grown around each of the monuments. When the Knights accomplished their mission those holy grounds containing the remains of our ancestors looked dignified. There are so many examples of goodness that comes from those who volunteer. Now as we begin the faith formation year we are in need of more volunteers to assist in the activities of Wednesdays. Many different positions are open so please call the parish office to sign up.

We also are critically short of personnel to adequately staff the liturgical roles during the Holy Mass. As we continue to strive to return to our “new normal” we ask for more from everyone’s time and talents. All gifts are from God, therefore it is most proper that we are good stewards by sharing our abilities with Others, especially in prayer. Again - every ministry is inadequately populated with names, so whatever you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Pray for us!

4 Welcome to Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Parish!

You Are Special by Max Lucado is a beautifully written story reminding children we are all God’s children and He loves unconditionally. It does not matter what

labels others put on us, what matters is our relationship with God. All we need to do is accept God’s love and spend some time in His presence every day.

Today, talented and beautiful individuals receive many compliments and need to beware that this praise does not make us egotistical. Others receive few compli-ments and often are ignored or criticized. The book does an excellent job of reminding us that the criticism and compliments can become part of who we are but only if we let them. God desires us to love others as we love ourselves. Our self images determine how we show love to others. Having a positive self image is important when it comes to our ability to share love and serve others. However, if we think too much of ourselves that ego gets in the way of loving others. The book ends with the statement, “You are special because I made you. And I don’t make mistakes.” When your children are feeling low, please remind them that they are loved by God and what others say should not be taken personally.

RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS - Breaking the Stewardship Mold

Have you noticed how we always tend to pigeonhole one another - and ourselves? “I could never serve on the Parish Council. That’s for Rick and Ellen and that whole group of people who have done it for years.” “Greg takes care of faith formation in the parish - he always has. He doesn’t need my help.” “I can’t afford to give the big bucks like those families who sit up front can. My offering wouldn’t matter even if I did increase it.” Thinking like this is a good indication that we aren’t in conversation with God about what His will is for our lives. If we have already decided what we are and are not meant to do, we aren’t likely to pray over it, to discern it. We have to be open to the spirit of the Lord -wherever it leads us, regardless of what we or others have come to expect from us. We human beings come to believe that we are such good judges of what others can offer - or what we ourselves can offer. But God has plans for us to which we aren’t privy. God calls everyone to serve Him in the way that pleases Him best, and only He can decide what that is. Everyday Steward-ship demands a continual accounting of who we can be, what we can offer - even if it’s outside our comfort zone, even if it’s something that never occurred to us before. There’s only one Person who can tell us what God wants from us. Do we even think to ask Him? — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi
