“AND ESTABLISH SALAH TO REMEMBER ME (ALLAH )” (Surah Ta-Ha 20:14)
.
Salāh PRAYER
2 | P a g e
AS-SALAH IS ONE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL PILLARS OF ISLAM. Salāh is the formal prayer of Islam. It is the
second pillar of Islam.
In the Arabic language, the basic meaning of
“Salāh” is “Du’a” (Invocation or Supplication).
“Salāh” originates from the word “Silah” which
mean connection. It is a connection between the
human and his Creator Allah .
In religious terminology, “Salāh” is used to refer
to the acts of bowing and prostration, the
remaining specified acts associated with it,
specified at certain times, with those known
conditions, and the characteristics, and
requirements that are well-known about it.
Salāh (Prayer) is one of the main obligations which
Allah has ordained on His servants. It was the
first act of worship that was made obligatory by
Allah and it is the last thing to be taken away
from the religion. When it perishes, Islam will
perish.
It refers to five daily payers which are Fard (compulsory or an obligation) for every Muslim.
Fard means that one is required to do it no matter
what.
It is the first act of worship commanded on the
Muslim Nation (Ummah) by Allah and was
ordained on the night of the ‘Isra-wal-Mi'raj’,
Prophet's ascension to the seven heavens.
Salāh is the only act of Ibadah which was
revealed directly, without any messenger in
between. Why? Because it is so special and it is
the one which is most beloved in the sight of Allah
.
Salāh establishes the physical, mental and spiritual
submission of Allah which start with Takbeer by
pronouncing “Allaahu Akbar - هللا اكبر ”- Allah is
Great and ends with Tasleem “Salam”- salutation of
peace. It is concrete proof of submission to Allah
. It fulfills our very purpose of creation.
“and I have created not the Jinn and men except
that they should worship Me (alone).” (Qur'an Surat Adh-Dhāriyāt 51:56)
Salāh is the first action that believer will be
questioned about, for the Messenger of Allah
said,
"The first thing which will be judged among a
man's deeds on the Day of Judgement
(Resurrection) is the Prayer. If this is in good
order then he will succeed and prosper but if it is
defective then he will fail and will be a loser. [Nasaa'ee, Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah]
The importance of Salāh is so great that one is
ordered to observe it in all occasions in all
circumstances without fail whether one is healthy or
sick, whether one prays standing, sitting or lying
down, whether one is travelling or residing and
whether one is safe or in fear.
“ The agreement which separates us (the
believers) from them (the non-believers) is the
prayer and he who leaves it, becomes a
disbeliever” (Imams Ahmed, At- Tirmidheee and An-Nasaa’ee)
WHO MUST PRAY Prayer is obligatory upon every sane adult
Muslim. A person is considered an adult upon
reaching puberty.

THE MERITS OF AS-SALAH
Prayer purifies the soul, refines the character
and inculcates in man the excellent virtues of
truthfulness, honesty and modesty.
1. Prevents from Al-Fahshaa’ (great sins of
every kind, unlawful, forbidden etc.) and Al-Munkar (falsehood, disbelief, polytheism, and
every kind of evil wicked deed, etc.).
Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to
you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed,
prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and
the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah
knows that which you do. ( Surat Al-`Ankabūt 29 : 45)
2. The best of deeds after the Testimony of
Faith (laa ilaaha illal-laah, Muhammad rasoulul-
laah). (Bukhari, Muslim)
3. Washes out sins / Expiates sins. (Muslim)
“The five obligatory daily prayers, the Friday
prayer followed by another Friday prayer,
Ramadan followed by another Ramadan, expiate
sins committed in between them as long as major
sins are avoided.”
4. A light for its adherent in this Life and in the
Hereafter. (Musnad Ahmad)
5. Raises in rank and removes sins. (Muslim)
6. One of the greatest causes to enter Paradise
with the company of the Prophet (Muslim)
7. Between each performance of salah and the
next performance, sins are pardoned. (Muslim)
8. The angels will ask Allah for Blessings and
Forgiveness upon the adherent in his place of
prayers. (Muslim)
9. Waiting for the next prayer after performing
a prayer is ribaat (keeping oneself adhering
and firm on acts of obedience). (Muslim)
10. The one who goes to the Mosque to perform
the prayer is in prayer until he returns. (Saheeh
ibn Khuzaimah)
KHUSHOO IN AS-SALAH
“Indeed successful are those believers. Who are
humble in their prayers” (Surat Al-Mu'minūn, 23: 1- 2)
“Khushoo” connects to Allah . Without “Khushoo”
prayer is weak, you are disconnected from Allah ,
even if you are in Masjid.
Salāh performed genuinely with humility and
submission to Allah has unlimited virtues and
benefits. It is the noblest expression of faith and
the surest way of thanking Allah for His unlimited
favors. Salah is a connection between you and Allah
to obtaining Allah 's mercy, generosity, kindness,
blessings and a sure way to paradise.
Tip: Before you stand for payer. And let everything
out of your system. Flush your brain. All the
thoughts that are running get them out. And just
engage you self into prayers. Pray as it is your last
prayer. Know what you are reciting. Learn some
vocabulary of what you are reciting.
For an item of difficulty from your list, allow the
heaviness of your heart and soul to pour out in every
word you utter in prayer. Permit your tears of anger
and anguish to release in prostration. Be certain that
through this action Allah will undoubtedly respond
to your distress.
PRAY ON TIME
Perform each of the five obligatory prayers as soon
as the time has commenced, as it is not permitted to
delay them without a valid reason.
“ Verily, As-Salât is enjoined on the believers
( to be performed ) at fixed hours.” (Surah An-Nisa 4:103)
MISSED PRAYERS
It is a major sin to miss a prayer deliberately. The
missed prayer must be made up as soon as it is
remembered.
