VALLADOLID

Capital of the Eastern Maya

Valladolid is, without doubt, the most important city in Eastern Yucatan. In ancient Mexico, the town of Zaci was already an important population center of the Maya civilization. Zaci stood at the crossroads of the caminos blancos, the elevated road system the Maya built to connect their cities. These roads brought pilgrims and traders from Chichen Itza, Ek Balam, Coba or Yaxunah.

The Eastern Maya, land of the Itzaes, is a region where two thirds of the residents are native Yucatec Maya speakers, where one finds the largest number of cenotes in the area, and where traditional customs characterize the worldview and lives of its inhabitants.

Valladolid, Capital of the Eastern Maya, is a city of foremost importance, founded by Francisco “The Nephew” Montejo, has become a focal point for explorers and adventurers who set out to know the great Maya culture.

Its appeal to travelers reflects its great historical heritage from the remote past, its Colonial legacy, and its contemporary role: Maya City, Colonial City of the Spaniards, City of Mexicans, and the cradle of the revolutionary ideology of the 20th century.

For all these reasons, Valladolid is the capital of the Eastern Maya, in addition to the city’s contributions to the Yucatecan cuisine, and its preservation of local customs and traditions. But above all, it is the festive spirit and hospitable nature of its inhabitants, which is why Valladolid has become not only Capital of the Eastern Maya, and, proudly, a Magical Town of Mexico.

GeoGraphyof VALLADoLID

LocationIt is a colorful colonial city with beautiful and charming neighborhoods. Strategically located between Merida and Cancun (at only two hour drive from each destination); 40 kilometers from Chichen Itza (one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World) and 26 miles from the Mayan archaeological site of Ek Balam. It is only within an hour and a half drive from the Riviera Maya, as well as near from other tourist routes such as: to the North, Las Coloradas, Rio Lagartos and San Felipe, to the east, the archaeological site of Coba and the Mexican Caribbean, to the west, Merida, the State capital, and Izamal (Magical Town of Mexico)..

ClimateThere are basically two different climates: warm along the coastline, and warm subhumid with summer rains in the rest of the state. The average temperature is between 25 and 35 ° C., with slightly cooler temperatures in winter.

Tips for travelersWe recommend that you use comfortable light clothing in light colors, with comfortable, closed shoes at archaeological sites, sandals for the beach and Cenotes. Biodegradable sunscreen, hats or caps and bottles of water are also a good idea.

The highway Merida-Valladolid-Cancun is the main ground communication between the two states of the Mexican southeast, and connects with the rest of the country through the Federal Highway 180, which give access to the roads of major cities of the southeastern: Campeche, Merida, Cancun and Playa del Carmen. It also has the Chichen Itza airport in Kaua, just 20 minutes from Valladolid. The transportation can be by car or bus to Valladolid, good quality at affordable prices.

Two significant events in the history of Mexico took place here: the Caste War in 1847 and the first spark of the Mexican Revolution in 1910. It is known today as The Sultan of the East, a title given due to the architectural beauty of its ancient colonial buildings like the Convent of San Bernardino de Siena, data from the XVI century, and the Cathedral of St. Servacio, historical buildings in use data from the baroque to the early XVIII century , City Hall, the Temple of San Juan de Dios, Santa Ana, San Roque Museum, Santa Lucia, La Candelaria, the loom of “Aurora” and Central Park “Francisco Canton Rosado,” among others, but also by the cultural legacy of men and women.

It was established by appointment of Francisco de Montejo, The Nephew on the outskirts of Lake Chouac-Ha (“long water”). The place of settlement was changed on May 28, 1543, because the land was not good, due to infertile grounds and unhealthy damp weather, as many of the inhabitants had become ill.It was decided then to move the city to a piece of land where the Mayan Site of Zaci were, a word that means “white hawk”, as you can see today represented on the coat of arms of the city.Valladolid acquired the category of “city” on December 13, 1823, it is the main town of the municipality of the same name, and is known as a place where peace and quietness is perceived, as the result of the hospitality and respect from the inhabitants.

The crest was made in 1973 for the 150th anniversary of being elevated to the rank of Valladolid “city”, on December 13, 1823. It was created by Mr. Juan Francisco Peon Ancona, heraldry scholar, where he combines symbolic elements: a white hawk, six Spanish-style turrets, the Maya icon for zero, a branch with xtabentun flowers , another branch with a cotton ball, the red background and the tagline “Heroic City”.

It is located on the southern side of the main square and was built by Priest Francisco Hernandez on March 24, 1545. In 1705 it was demolished by appointment of Bishop Pedro de los Rios Reyes, after the desecration of such sacred building, in the so called “Crime of Mayors.”

In 1706 it was restored as we see it now, and to prevent the altar of the new church to have the same position when it was tainted, a new orientation was given to it. For this reason the church is facing the north and west, as most of the colonial temples in Yucatan, were built facing towards Rome.

On the main facade there is a coat of arms carved on stone with arabesques, a royal crown and a Franciscan cord, and in the central part of it, bears an eagle and a palm, peculiar characteristic of the churches made by the Franciscans.

Two square towers rise, on the side from the central facade; conformed of three structural bodies and on top of the main gate, there is a small booth for the clock, the only public one in the city. The building consists of temple, court and annex, with an area of 6.658 square meters.It is located on 41 streets, between 40 and 42.

THE CITY HALLThis building is located on the east side of the main square. The building was of one

level, with thick walls, built with stone and lime, it was restored to become the current City Hall, completed in 1864. The city mayor’s office is upstairs, where he holds the Council meetings. . In the courtyard there is a stage where some City Mayors were shot and wounded, after the desecration in the parish church.

The building itself is a true architectural jewel, because of the arcade and hand carved stone columns, as well as its colonial balconies. On the main hall there are four murals painted by Manuel Lizama , yucatecan artist, which represent different stages in the history of Valladolid, from the Conquest to the Mexican Revolution period.Located on 40 street, between 39 and 41 downtown.

It is a property of arcaded porch supported by cylindrical stone columns, both on the first and second story. The spaces on the lower and upper level are framed with stone and multiline lintel. Horse carriages are available for a ride in the neighborhood. At the top level, the spaces are not framed, while the corridor is bordered by a wrought iron railing with wooden handrail. Inside there are some parts framed with stone and wood. It has tile, stone and wooden floors. And in the courtyard there is an arcade with the same architectural features displayed on the facade.

The Municipal Culture Department is located in the same building as the City Hall, in the Historic Center; visiting hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 14:00 hrs and 15:00 to 21:00 hrs and on Saturdays from 9:00 to 12:00 hrs.

In 1575 following instructions of Don Diego Sarmiento de Figueroa, City Mayor at that time, was founded the Hospital Del Santo Nombre de Jesus, in what later became the Convent of San Roque. In 1634 Don Francisco Ruiz, priest and vicar of Valladolid, left by testament a donation of four thousand pesos, to support with the revenues four beds. In 1645 was one of the best hospitals in the province. No trace of the hospital is left, but the Church of San Roque, remains standing as its construction began after many years.

Here were buried Fernando Hipolito Osorno and Pedro Gabriel Covarrubias, protagonists of the historical event known as “The Crime of the Mayors of Valladolid”; the leaders of the armed movement were also shot in 1910.

The same building was chosen by Governor Jose Maria Iturralde Traconis to host the first power plant of the city. Today it holds a small collection of regional art and appliances used for the exploitation of gum. It works as a museum of regional art since June 4, 1985.

Located on 41 street and 38. Admission is free and can be visited from Monday through Saturday from 9:00 to 21:00 hrs. and on Sunday from 9:00 to 18:00 hrs.

MAIN PARk FRANCISCOCANTONROSADODuring the early times of the foundation, there was in Valladolid a square construction of 100 m. in the middle, which held a Mayan pyramid in the for worship, which was demolished by the conquerors, who used the same stones to build the parish church. It was inaugurated in 1900, as evidenced by the existing graved plates on the four main doorways, during the government period of General Francisco Canton Rosado.

La Mestiza fountain is located in the center of the park, and is the perfect place for souvenir picture taken, when visiting the beautiful colonial city of Valladolid. The statue is proudly wearing the regional Yucatecan dress, holding a pitcher of water, from which flows water and it is across from the impresive Church of St. Servacio. La Mestiza was built in 1924 by sculptor Manuel Chacon Cima, by appointment of Don Jose Maria Iturralde y Traconis, distinguished citizen from Valladolid, who at that time was the State governor.

Today the fountain, and Zocalo or Central Park are icons of Valladolid, local people and visitors gather around these areas along with tourists who arrive to the destination.It is located in the Historical downtown area, surrounded by the main streets 39, 40, 41 and 42.

These brave men, who started the Mexican Social Revolution on June 4, 1910, were shot on the spot where now stands a park with gardens, roses and a pyramid to the memory of such heroes from Valladolid. It was built when Agustin Franco Aguilar was the State Governor, and while the city mayor in charge was Mr. Francisco Alcocer Vazquez. These heroes were the coronel Claudio Alcocer, Atilano Albertos, Maximo Bonilla and Jose E. Kantun.

From reports according to the “Crime of Mayors”, Captain Fernando Hipolito de Osorno and the attorney Pedro Gabriel Covarrubias, were shot for not having accomplished the requests and demands of the inhabitants, and whose remains are buried in this garden.It is located behind the Museum of San Roque between the streets 41 and 38 downtown.

One of the most historical manors in the Eastern Sultan, as it is also known the city of Valladolid. It was the home of Don Roque Rosado, the town attorney in 1810; in 1835 it also belonged to Don Pedro Sainz de Baranda, hero of the Independence of Mexico and promoter of the manufacturing industry, who offered hospitality to John L. Stephens, explorer and author of the book “Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan”.

Another owner of the same property was General Francisco Canton. And on March 11, 1863 was born in this house Delio Moreno Canton, a philanthropist of thought and speech, lawyer, public notary, writer, poet, journalist, playwright, novelist and politician.Location: In the Historic Center, on 42nd and 37th Streets.

It stands on one of the most characteristic colonial buildings of Valladolid, best known for being the first grade school in the city and takes the name of a prominent poet from Valladolid: Delio Moreno Canton.

Today the building has modern facilities, green spaces and areas that provide the best conditions for trading handicrafts from Valladolid. Here visitors can find craftsmen and artisans from the different villages in the municipality, who promote their with elaborated and varied craft techniques such as embroidery, rattan, wood, leather, stone, and hammocks, among others.Location Street 39 No. 194, by 40 and 42 downtown. Clemente Rosado Alcocer was the Mayor who ordered the construction of the Colonial Park, and it was finished on March 21, 1981. It was inaugurated by President of Mexico Jose Lopez Portillo. Today is one of the most beautiful colonial parks of the city. You may take a break and enjoy under the shade of the trees, or feel the fresh breeze of an evening in Valladolid.It is located on Street 35, between 42 and 44 in the neighborhood of la Candelaria.

Pedro Sainz de Baranda, political leader of Valladolid and deputy governor of Yucatan, after finishing his public charges, he concentrated on industrial activities. In 1824, he established La Aurora, fully mechanized factory of textiles, fabric and threads. Located on street 35, between 42 and 44, this was the first factory to use steam power across the country.

The products obtained from La Aurora, turned out to be of high quality and compared favorably with foreign products. For Valladolid and its district, the company was a source of wealth because it generated direct and indirect jobs.

However, it was closed due to the entry of imported goods. Two years after the death of its founder, in 1845, it was destroyed by fire, when the Mayan rebels attacked Valladolid; after being abandoned for a while, it was adapted as military barracks, public high school, public jail, and place of the Third District Court. Currently it hosts a theater and the public library Pedro Sainz de Baranda.

SANTA LuCIANEIGHBORHOOD

In 1910, the center of this neighborhood consisted of an empty space where bullfights were held, the feast was organized to honor the Virgin of Saint Lucia.

The facade of the church has a crest by a simple bulrush with three clear spaces on the belfry for the bells; the door frames are carved in stone with flora motives. It is estimated that the construction was at the beginning of the XVII century.This building is located on 42nd Street, by 47 in barrio de Santa Lucia.

The story tells that it was one of the neighborhoods that were selected to concentrate a group of people convinced to rise with arms against the government of General Porfirio Diaz, at that time President of Mexico. The rebels called this plan Dzelkoop.

The patron saint is the Blessed Virgin from La Candelaria, and every year the community surrenders tribute to the greatest festival of the town. It is called La Virgen de Las Candelas, because in one hand carries a lightened candle and in the other she holds a child; this reminds Catholics the passage, where Mary presents Jesus in the temple to fulfill the Law of Moses.As for its architectural characteristics, it was built of masonry,

vaulted ceiling and bricked floors, it has a single alley, and in the front section there is a portal of three arches that extend to the street. On the Southern side it has a small atrium and some exterior stairs leading to the dressing room of the Virgin which is behind the altar. This image is exposed only during holidays. The art work data from the XVI century.It is located on Street 44 by 35, of La Candelaria neighborhood.

The main feature is the belfry. This church was built in the XVI Century and, was for the exclusive use of the Indians, as most of the services, excepting mass, were performed and conducted in Maya. The patron saint is Santa Ana (mother of Holy Virgin Mary) and it is also found there the image of San Joaquin (father of the virgin). They represent the religious faith of the inhabitants, progressive and hard working people, who with their enthusiasm and dedication for work, had given their suburb an excellent image.

The construction of the temple is composed of atrium, body of the church and sacristy. The church is made of masonry, of a single structure, with smooth walls and façade; the frames of the door are made out of carving stone. The altar piece supports the niche that keeps the image of the patroness saint in the middle; on the tabernacle there is a two door niche, which remains opened, over which the images of St. Joseph and St. Peter are painted. Next to the main altar, two great statues of St. Dimas and St. Judas Tadeo stand out. And inside an ancient chest is kept and guard the funeral Ark of the Christ of love, from this temple.Located on Street 34 between 39 and 41 of the barrio Santa Ana

Accused of rebellion and conspiracy to begin the Caste War, Manuel Antonio Batab (Mayan leader) was hanged here, due to these actions. The place is known as the Park of the Caste War Heroes. In the center stands the monument known as The Rotunda of the young Heroes of Chapultepec, and on September 13 of each year they hold a tribute ceremony on behalf of their courage and heroic performance to defend the Castle of Chapultepec.Located on street 34 between 39 and 41 in barrio de Santa Ana.

This is a partially collapsed cave of about 45 feet in diameter; some stalactites formed over time by water leaking carrying minerals hang from the vault roof of the Cenote. The flora of the cenote includes cottonwoods, ferns, orchids and other species, algae grow inside the rocks, and the outside is covered with moss. The depth of the water varies from 25 to 30 meters in the lower parts, and up to 100 meters in the deepest section. As far as the height of the dome, in relation to water surface, is estimated at 29 meters, and is variable between the rainy season and summer. The fauna is composed of swallows, bats, catfish and a variety of insects such as dragonflies, beetles, snails, etc.It is located on Street 36, between 39 and 37 on the district of Santa AnaIt can be visited from Monday through Sunday from 8:00 to 17:00 hrs.

Opposite the church there is a park with a monument dedicated to the mothers and a small fountain in the center. It is surrounded by colonial houses, of modern architecture and an elementary school. Opposite from this corner, is the house of Don Manuel Aguilar Rivero, who was mayor of Valladolid during the 1945-1947 triennium.

The patroness of the neighborhood is the Virgen Del Refugio. The Church has two Moorish square towers that top each with a carved stone cross, the sacristy is a two story space, on the north side, and a stone staircase that leads upstairs. In front is a corridor of colonial arches with stone columns, decorated with lintels and a chapel. The side entrances have huge colonial style arches. The patron of the church is San Juan Bautista and the building dates from 1780. This church is located on Street 40, between 47 and 49 in the barrio de San Juan.

Ex CONVENT OFSANBERNARDINODESIENAThe name of Sisal, is a contraction of ziiz –ha Mayan, which is translated into Castilian as “cold water”. In 1552 the construction began under the supervision of Fray Hernando de Guevara, Francisco de la Torre and Fray Juan de Merida. Formerly the church was called San Francisco, as the Order of the Franciscans had built and founded the convent.

On top of the front door you can see the coat of arms from the Franciscan order, and below is engraved the year 1560, which corresponds to the date on which it was concluded, the church was blessed, and opened to serve the community. The facade has a long row of arches with thick walls of more than 50 inches width and a carved stone entrance.

In the upper niche, above the tabernacle, there is an image of Virgin of Guadalupe. Inside the church, there is

still a beautiful wooden altar with arabesques artistically carved, impressive for its size and fine details. Forward lies the main altar on the right side, another small image of Santa Teresa de Jesus, and to the left Our Lady of Sorrows, with a painting on wood on the bottom that has carved the Annunciation representation and the conception of Holy Father and Virgin Mary.

In 1978, Father Andres Ruiz Lizama performing the restoration work on some altars, had them removed and found in the back several paintings of an unknown author and the reason for which these were hidden, presumably dating from the XVI Century. The architectural complex consists of church, chapel, Convent, courtyard and garden; all of these buildings occupy an area of 14.121 square meters.Located Street 49, and 50 in the barrio de Sisal.

It’s sort of an alley that joins the Barrio del Sisal with the main street that leads to the downtown area of Valladolid. In this sector were rescued and restored architectural details of great value, of homes, streets, and the public lightning that bring memories that evoke the colonial past of Valladolid.Located near Street 41-A, between 46 and 54 (for the 5 Streets) barrio de Sisal.

bACALARNEIGHBORHOOD

Two kilometers west of the heroic city of Valladolid is located the charming and refreshing water spring Cenote Dzitnup, also known as The Blue Cave.

The sun penetrates through a small natural inlet at the top of the dome, illuminating the interior and creating a stunning image with the reflection of water. The entrance is narrow and you may go downstairs to the water surface on a well carved rock stairs, which lead to a site that allows access to the only cavity. Finding a spectacular view of a turquoise blue lake decorated with stalactites that descend from the vault and double their image on the water. The light that reaches the ceiling increases its majesty. It was discovered by a farmer who was looking for his pig, which had fallen into the cenote. At first it was known as Xkeken, which means “pig” in Mayan. It allows visitors to swim. Visiting hours are from 7:00 to 17:00 hrs.

The Cenote from Samula is located across front the Xkeken, beautiful crystal clear underground cavern of turquoise water, that are illuminated by a hole in the top. From this hang the roots of the trees surrounding the water spring until you reach the bottom.

It can be visited from Monday to Sunday from 8:00 to 17:00 hrs.

TIzIMIN (“Place of the tapir”)

It’s a cattle town by excellence. Among the places of interest, are the ex-convent and the Parish of the Three Wise Men, data from the XVII century, and the ex-Convent and Temple of San Francisco, from the XVI century. Outstanding archaeological Mayan vestiges are found in Dzonot Ake, El Palmar, Chunhuele, Xlacab, Panaba, Haltunchen, and Xuencal. TINuM (“Place of the thorn”)

Here we have found traces of ancient buildings belonging to some human settlement. A visit to the Church of San Antonio de Padua and the Chapel of Jesus is a must. Both buildings were built in the colonial era, as well as the Templo de la Concepcion. Very close is found the archaeological zone of Chichen Itza. San Juan Holtun, Tikincab, San Francisco Seme, jewel of Erik Thompson, Canahum, Halacal, Xnaba, Dzibiac, Bacancu, La Venta and Piste, are well traced towns and Villages built among Mayan sites, and is common to observe and find these structures. TEMOzON

Means “Place of whirls”, and it is located 10 kilometers from Valladolid. Temozon is the perfect stop on the way to the archaeological site of Ek Balam and Cenote X-Canche. If the interest is to get to know the main economic activities of Yucatan, this place is a sample of that because it was settled the corn production region. Regarding agriculture and livestock, seeds of corn, beans, watermelon, tomatoes and a variety of chiles, are cultivated, as well as the rising of cattle, pork and poultry.One of the most important Haciendas de Yucatan is settled in this municipality, and has sisal production. Today this hacienda has been restored and it lodges a hotel, which makes the stay of its guests a most memorable one, as it keeps the decoration and lifestyle of the late XIX and early XX centuries. The village itself if also full of traditions, as during the festivities on November for the Day of All Saints and Day of Death, a traditional altar is set on the main living room of the houses, and the food that was most enjoyed by the deceased ones is served on the altar, as greetings to the souls that will visit the family on those days. Sometimes it is served Mucbil-pollo, atole, corn, and hot chocolate. It is a nice town also known for its wooden crafts items and their production of rich sausage and famous smoked meat.

From the Mayan expression “Ka”, contraction of “kaah”, which means “bitter”; and “yua” as “esta”, may be interpreted as “is it bitter?” There is no trace of Mayan origin settlements in the territory, but it is known of inhabitant existence, before the conquest. During colonial times, under the regime of Commendation, Diego Escalante (1700-1750) was in charge of such responsibility. In 1825 became part of the match in Valladolid, and in 1928 it became a free municipality. Since 2000, an airport was built, which is used for the arrival of tourists on private flights, mainly persons visiting the Chichen Itza and Valladolid.

Just ten minute drive from Valladolid, this town is a must to visit, mainly for its spectacular temple and convent of Santo Domingo. It was built in 1646 with stones from the nearby Mayan ruins. During the Caste War the Mayan rebels invaded Uayma, and destroyed the original church, on their effort to eradicate any vestige of the Spanish presence in the peninsula, but it was rebuilt in 1891. The last restoration was finished in 2005, and is very similar to the original. However there are still colonial buildings falling apart, which require restoration such as the railroad station.

Popular celebrations On May 3rd, the festivity honors the Holy Cross, on the 15th day of the same month, San Isidro Labrador, patron of the town, from July 26 through August 6th. The celebration is in honor of Santo Domingo. During these festivities there are dance contests, bullfights, fraternities, and the most famous traditional dance performance of “ The Pig Head “.

CHICHIMILA Y xOCEN

They are located 10 minutes from Valladolid, on the road that goes to Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo. These two villages are the best option to go into the life of the Mayan culture that still prevails in almost all the houses made with a hatched roof. With its people, strongly religious and very much unto the oldest Mayan traditions, Xocen and Chichimila still live its glorious past as a result of the movement called Caste War, which was originated in this area.

Chichimila amazes the visitor with cenotes, caves and other natural open areas, and Xocen with the most deeply rooted traditions (such as their faith to the Holy Cross or Xocen Stone Cross -considered as the Center of the World-) and with a spectacular Indian Theatre Lab, that presents cultural plays, with the participation of several inhabitants of the community. The entrance to the archaeological site of Ek Balam, a Mayan word meaning “black Jaguar” or “black star”, was protected by two walls and an arch. It has 45 structures and numerous stelea; An Acropolis is located inside, and there are shrines such as the Mouth of the Jaguar and the Winged Warriors, The Oval Palace, the Ball court, Twin Pyramids, among the most important.

It is located at only 26 miles north from Valladolid and can be visited daily from 8:00 to 17:00 hrs. As in Chichen Itza, the Sunday admission is free for domestic tourism.

Just off this area is Cenote X-court, which invites visitors to various activities and keep in touch with nature. Access is through a bike riding, and once you are there, it is possible to practice rappelling and zip lining, kayaking and swimming.

Visiting hours are from 8:00 to 17:00 and has service areas and space for relaxation.

Coba means “muddy waters”. This city became one of the most important of the Mayan civilization in the Yucatan peninsula and reached its peak during the years 600-900 AD. When the Spanish arrived, it had already been vacated, probably displaced in importance by other sites such as Chichen Itza and Tulum.

This site located in Q Roo, consists of five groups of buildings or complexes, with a network of roads that interconnect with each other and facilitated the trading of goods and services with the rest of the peninsula of Yucatan. It also has 45 sacbes (roads) that connect the various sets of the site and other smaller communities. The most famous groups are: The Coba Group, including the Pyramid Temple known as “The Church” because it contains many figures and symbols, and the restored Nohoch Mul Group, where one of the largest mounds throughout the Maya area known by that name, because it has a height of 42 meters. After many studies, it is understood that there are more than six thousand structures buried in the dense jungle and around the archaeological site of Coba, which is the classic example of the supremacy of the first millennium of the Maya in Mesoamerica.Visiting hours are Monday through Sunday from 8:00 to 19:00 hrs during the summer, and from 7:00 to 18:00 hrs in winter.

The sacred city of the Itzaes, is located 40 kilometers (30 min. drive) from the city of Valladolid. The archaeological site was registered in 1988 on the list of World Heritage by UNESCO, and on the July 7, 2007 was recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

On this splendid site, Mayan Puuc architecture is found, well represented on the great Pyramid of Kukulcan, also found on the Observatory, the Ball Court and Temple of a Thousand Columns. Deep inside the forest is the Sacred Well or Cenote, where human sacrifices were held, as offerings to the gods.

Visiting hours are Monday through Sunday from 8:00 to 17:00 hrs. There is a sound and light show where the history of this Mayan city is performed. Schedules for the show are at 20:00 hrs in summer and 18:00 hrs in winter. For domestic tourism, Sunday admission is free.

The sinkhole was discovered in 1950 by a farmer who was looking for his lost pig, which had fallen into the water, before this event, nobody knew that the site had a deep water spring inside the earth. It was from this anecdot that it had taken its name from because; pig in Maya means “x’keken”

This cenote, also called Dzitnup, is inside an underground cavern, where you can watch formation of awkward stalactites.

Its waters are crystal clear of turquoise blue, which are colored by the sun shining through the hole which is in the middle of the vault. This cenote is ideal for swimming and watch different fish, as it has shallow waters.

Zaci, means “white hawk” in Maya. This was the name of the Mayan Site where in 1543 Valladolid was founded.

It is one of the open pit cenotes, perhaps the largest and most impressive of the peninsula. The water surface is of 28 meters width and a height from the mirror of water is 26 meters, from which the roots of trees hang. This cenote receives visitors from around the world who also enjoy the stunning beauty can also enjoy the cuisine.

Suytun means “Stone Center” in Maya and is the most important ceremonial cenote because its inhabitants engaged their offerings to Ixchel (goddess of fertility) and Yum Kaax (God of corn god).

This cenote is located at 8 kilometer, from the Valladolid-Puerto Juarez Road, within the Suytun resort. There are other five cenotes within the outskirts, however only two of them are open to the public. These can be visited from Monday through Sunday from 8:00 to 18:00 hrs.

Samula, means “Downed sands”. The vault of this cenote was opened by the roots from a tree, which descend to find the water, allowing also to the sunlight to penetrate and lighten the turquoise waters. It stands opposite to X’keken cenote.

Yucatan is the ideal place to combine bird watching with a visit to Mayan archaeological sites and rural communities. The only existing colony of American Flamingos in Mexico is found in this region which consists of more than 30 000 birds. The range of species is divided as follows: 233 resident species year-round, 31 vagrants, 14 casual, 54 predominantly migratory, 102 Neotropic and Nearctic. There are also found 11 out of 14 endemic species from all the area.

The training to local people in the communities has created a culture over birds to promote conservation, including some local guides who have achieved high levels of expertise. One of the most developed programs to protect the pink flamingos in the Caribbean. Bird watching can be carried out in the reserves of Ria Lagartos, Dzilam Bravo, El Palmar, Yalahau and Tabi.

BIRDwATCHING

It is simply beautiful, with its changing colors ranging from blue green to deep blue as the sky dome. It is the refugee for fish, frogs, toads, turtles and lizards, turtles, and Morelleti crocodiles. A tour by boat is made to admire this spot; afterwards you walk to the highest point. When going through these paths it is possible to find spider and howler monkeys, which are not afraid of human presence and their pictures can be taken within walking distance. You can enjoy the canopy of the park, fully equipped with helmet and harness, and use a “Mayan-style hand brake” to pass over the lake at high speed.

The town is located an hour from the city of Valladolid, 116 miles away. You can observe Mayan rituals representations upon requested in advance. Before arriving at Punta Laguna you can visit the Hidalgo Camp, an ideal place to relax and get to know their village and its beautiful waterhole that complement the landscape.

This reserve is located 104 kilometers north of Valladolid. There are four communities in this protected area: San Felipe, Ria Lagartos, Las Coloradas and El Cuyo. The reserve was declared a Wildlife Refuge Area on June 26, 1979 and covers an area of 60.348 hectares. The population of nearly seven thousand inhabitants is engaged in fishing or the salt activity.

The most outstanding features are the lagoon, mangrove swamps, the flocks of birds and many reptiles. Species of mammals in danger of extinction live on this environment, including the lynx, spider monkey and the ocelot; more than 330 species of birds, of which stands the pink flamingo, which has its nesting habitat in this area, amphibians and reptiles that add up to 95 species, where four species of sea turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs: loggerhead, green, leatherback and hawksbill, plus there have been registered 91 species of fish and about 523 types of plants.

You can visit and sail through the mangroves by boat and see the different species of animals that belong to this environment and habitat.

These cabins are located in the Mayan village of Ek Balam. Traditions and customs of the region are still preserved here. This is noticed because of the garments the inhabitants wear, the language, cuisine and ancient ceremonies. The cabins are managed by 23 families organized into Maya cooperatives, the archaeological site of the same name is located within 3 kilometers.

Balankanche is a Mayan word meaning “jaguar throne.” For the ancient Maya this was a site of great importance, it had a sacred meaning to them as it represented the entrance to the underworld, where several deities live. There is the ancient belief that it was the refugee of the Rain gods. The entrance passage descends steeply to a depth of 10 meters. The explored paths within the cave cover approximately 2 miles of trails. Along this corridor the passages are occasionally interrupted by large chambers of about 10 meter height and 25 of width, in which the stalactites and stalagmites in the cave become one and form sort of columns.

At 200 meters from the entrance is the Throne of Balam, an altar where the Maya carried out some sort of ceremony. In the middle of a twenty feet height room stands a large pillar formed by the fusion of a stalactite and a stalagmite, which resembles a huge ceiba tree called “the sacred ceiba that grows inside the earth.” Here are found innumerable ceremonial pieces of great archaeological value.

It is located six kilometers from Chichen Itza and Valladolid 35 km. (30 minutes). There is a spectacular light and sound show that tells the story. It has a museum with photographs and explanatory cards of certain sacred rituals practiced inside. This cave is open Monday through Sunday from 8:00 to 17:00 hrs.

This is a cave that was used as a ceremonial center by the ancient Mayas. At its entrance is the Throne of Balam, which is a kind of altar, after which are named the caves. There is kind of a semi dry lake at the end of the last chamber where Mayan offerings were found, scattered shells and pieces of jade. It has a museum with photographs and explanatory cards about the sacred rituals practiced here. It is located 6 kilometers north from Chichen Itza.

An important city in Yucatan State, it was named a Magical Town of Mexico, and has become the Capital of the Eastern Maya. Among its main attractions are the impressive Convent of San Bernardino, a Franciscan style building, the City Hall Palace and church of San Servacio. The size of Ek Balam as a center was 12 square kilometers (4.6 square miles), and this included a sacred ceremonial center that was 1 square kilometer (0.4 square mile), reserved as a residence for the elite. Most of the buildings date from the Late Classic Period (11th century). The entrance to this site is protected by two walls which are graced by a magnificent Maya archway. The buildings of the ceremonial center feature an oval-shaped palace and a fair-sized Maya ball game court.

DAY 4 FLAMINGO RESERVE AND wILDLIFE SANCTuARYEnjoy breakfast at hotel. We will pick you up at hotel lobby to travel to Ria Lagartos Ecological Reserve which is home to pink flamingos and hundreds of bird species. We will take a boat ride that lasts between 2 or 3 hours within the boundaries of the Ria Lagartos Biosphere, where you can enjoy a close-up view of a large number of pink flamingos and birds of different species, with ample opportunity to take as many photos as you like. We will have lunch in a regional restaurant in the village and return to hotel in the afternoon. Afterwards, you will have all the afternoon and evening free to explore Valladolid at night!

DAY 5 LEGENDARY LANDS OF THE wAR OF THE CASTESBreakfast in hotel and do fuel up, for today will be an impressive day of touring as we relive the history of the War of the Castes. We begin in the town of Tihosuco, at the museum, where we will enjoy a traditional Maya welcome beverage. Then we will tour the five rooms that comprise the museum, led by a guide from the Maya community who is an authority on the history of the collections. Afterwards, we will proceed to the church and colonial houses. Lunch is served in a Maya house, in the company in the descendants of the region, and we will be entertained by traditional Maya song and dances that reflect the culture of the Maya. After a short rest period, we continue the tour; Maya elders will demonstrate the traditional craft of weaving cotton, and the preparation of traditional medicines. This is a full day of learning and enjoying new experiences that you will never forget.

DAY 6 A DAY AMONG THE MAYAAfter a good breakfast at the hotel we will pick you up. This day is for visiting another wonder of the Eastern Maya Region: Ek Balam. This is a lovely place not only for its impressive architecture but for the warmth of its people. Best of all, you can explore the entire site and even climb the pyramid which is an opportunity to soak up positive energy before we continue with a visit to the cenote (natural sink hole) X-canche. Here, a trip full of adventure and adrenaline awaits you: walk down the path to the cenote, and upon arriving, you will be able to put yourself to the test and enjoy spirited adventures. Zip-lining, kayaking, rappelling and a chance to cool off by swimming in the cenote await you. Lunch is served at the Maya House. After a cozy rest in the Maya hammocks, renowned for their comfort, we will conclude the visit at the handicrafts market Ek Balam. Afternoon arrival back Valladolid offers an opportunity to learn more the about the city with Trova Night, Trova being a traditional genre of music, and dine in one of the most visited restaurants, Las Campanas (The Bells). DAY 7 MAYA TRADEEnjoy a delicious breakfast in your hotel. Today we head out for a well known tourist center in the Maya world, Tulum. We will explore the archaeological site of this ancient trading center of the Maya, which is peculiar in that it is located atop a cliff with a spectacular view of the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. You will have the day to swim in these crystal clear waters and afterwards, we will have lunch at a restaurant in the area. Upon our return to Valladolid you will have the rest of the afternoon free to rest and prepare for your flight the next day.

DAY 1 ARRIVAL AT AIRPORTArrival at the airport of Merida or Cancun. We will continue with the tour along the route of the friars until you we reach the former convent of Saint Bernardino of Siena, which is renowned for the cenote that lies beneath the buildings.
