Different Gospel & Where the Gospel Comes From

NLT

Greetings from Paul-This letter is from Paul, an apostle. I was not appointed by any group of people or any human authority, but by Jesus Christ himself and by God the Father, who raised Jesus from the dead.

2 All the brothers and sisters here join me in sending this letter to the churches of

Galatia.3 May God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and

peace. 4 Jesus gave his life for our sins, just as God our Father planned, in order to

rescue us from this evil world in which we live. 5 All glory to God forever and ever!

Amen.

There Is Only One Good News- I am shocked that you are turning away so soon from God, who called you to himself through the loving mercy of Christ You are following a different way that pretends to be the Good News 7 but is not the Good News at all. You are being fooled by those who deliberately twist the truth concerning Christ.

8 Let God’s curse fall on anyone, including us or even an angel from heaven, who

preaches a different kind of Good News than the one we preached to you. 9 I say

again what we have said before: If anyone preaches any other Good News than the

one you welcomed, let that person be cursed.

10 Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing

people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant. Paul’s Message Comes from

Christ-11 Dear brothers and sisters, I want you to understand that the gospel

message I preach is not based on mere human reasoning. 12 I received my message

from no human source, and no one taught me. Instead, I received it by direct

revelation from Jesus Christ.

13 You know what I was like when I followed the Jewish religion—how I violently

persecuted God’s church. I did my best to destroy it. 14 I was far ahead of my fellow

Jews in my zeal for the traditions of my ancestors.

Page 5: Salt Shakin’ Sister Life Application ible Studiesdoccdn.simplesite.com/d/3d/05/285697108339852605/c7fa04f9... · 2020-01-15 · 12 Week Bible Study in the Book of Galatians Books

15 But even before I was born, God chose me and called me by his marvelous grace.

Then it pleased him 16 to reveal his Son to me so that I would proclaim the Good

News about Jesus to the Gentiles.

When this happened, I did not rush out to consult with any human being. 17 Nor did

I go up to Jerusalem to consult with those who were apostles before I was. Instead,

I went away into Arabia, and later I returned to the city of Damascus.

18 Then three years later I went to Jerusalem to get to know Peter, and I stayed

with him for fifteen days. 19 The only other apostle I met at that time was James,

the Lord’s brother. 20 I declare before God that what I am writing to you is not a lie.

21 After that visit I went north into the provinces of Syria and Cilicia. 22 And still the

churches in Christ that are in Judea didn’t know me personally. 23 All they knew was

that people were saying, “The one who used to persecute us is now preaching the

very faith he tried to destroy!” 24 And they praised God because of me.

KJV

1 Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the

Father, who raised him from the dead;)2 And all the brethren which are with me,

unto the churches of Galatia:3 Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and

from our Lord Jesus Christ,4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us

from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

5 To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed

from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:

7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you and would pervert the

gospel of Christ.

8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than

that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.9 As we said before, so

say I now again, if any man preaches any other gospel unto you than that ye have

received, let him be accursed.

10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet

pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after

man.12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation

of Jesus Christ.13 For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews'

religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it:

14 And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation,

being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.

15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called

me by his grace,16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the

heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:

17 Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I

went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus.18 Then after three years I

went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days.19 But other of

the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord's brother.

20 Now the things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not.21 Afterwards

I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia;22 And was unknown by face unto the

churches of Judaea which were in Christ:23 But they had heard only, That he which

persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he

destroyed.24 And they glorified God in me.

Notes from audio - Verses 1:1-9 “A Different Gospel”

David starts out by asking the audience how long they had been saved. Let’s say 12

years. Then they start mission trips and plant churches.

Paul is out for 12 years, very successfully planting churches. Then he settles down

from his journey and hears the people from the churches he planted are turning

from the truth he taught them.

Paul dictates this letter, then it is written to several churches. Galatia was a region,

not a city. Many churches are involved in this letter (Paul has been saved 15 years

now)

Paul is called by God, not by people. In those days they started their letters with

who is writing it instead of waiting to the end, as we do these days.

Apostles today – Yes/No? They are special Ambassadors that minster the word and

plant churches. The Galatians weren’t respecting Paul’s authority from God.

Paul always says Grace and Peace. Paul tells what Jesus did for us, that is what’s

the most important message. God and Father – Jesus the Son = Both the same.

We need to give of ourselves. Jesus gave His life for our sin. Does satan lie to you?

You’re a failure, loser. Liar, Liar, Liar.

Equip ourselves from satans lies with Jesus love and grace. Jesus gives us a clear

conscience and delivers us from evil days.

The people are turning away from Jesus and the truth Good News so easily! It is

turning into a “different” gospel. Read 1 Corinthians 1:3-4 about what was

happening at the church of Corinth. What a mess!

Paul encourages them first, then he reprimands-this is the way Paul usually writes

to us – NOT in the letter to Galatians! We have some real problems here. Let’s talk!

Paul talks about the “different” gospel. Our culture has a lot of that. Everything

that is “different” is NOT always good.

Page 10: Salt Shakin’ Sister Life Application ible Studiesdoccdn.simplesite.com/d/3d/05/285697108339852605/c7fa04f9... · 2020-01-15 · 12 Week Bible Study in the Book of Galatians Books

10

This was a perverted gospel that was being taught, NOT a “different” one. In verse

7 they wanted to pervert the gospel. Why?

Paul has a lot to correct in their wrong teachings. The false teachers were there to

bring trouble. They wanted to PERVERT the gospel of Christ. Why? In 1 Corinthians

15:1-4 Paul clearly shares the true gospel. True gospel is offensive to our human

nature, it tells of what Jesus did for us NOT what we have to do within ourselves.

What is so offensive about that? It offends our PRIDE! You need to be rescued, “I

don’t need” rescued! We get NO CREDIT. Jesus did it all!

The word offends our Wisdom and Knowledge. All this causes perversion. Paul

repeats two times that whoever perverts the gospel will be cursed.

Beware of political correctness. The truth will win the day.

I am the way, the truth and the Life – No other way to Jesus!

We honor what Jesus did on the cross. Where is Paul’s love here? His love is for the

people. The perishing people. His passionate love for them compels him to tell

them the truth!

Listen to David share story about the two rescue ships – good example!

One ship is full of dynamite

Second ship is full of safety/grace/salvation

Choose One.

Notes from audio - Verses 1:10-24 “Where the Gospel Comes From”

False teaching – “different” gospel – WRONG gospel – NOT just different cultures.

Paul reiterates his gospel truth; the true gospel and what he is sharing is the true

gospel because it came from Jesus NOT man! If Paul pleases man, he would not be

a servant of Christ.

Paul preaches for God not man. He is not going to tickle the hearer’s ears! He says:

“I am speaking first and foremost to God” This should be the attitude of those that

teach/preach the gospel, whether it be to 5 or 500 men and women. God is there.

Be a God pleaser, not man pleaser. We have to have a servant’s heart; Paul’s

gospel is from God NOT man.

(Count how many times Paul says this in lesson #1-wow) It is really important to

God when He repeats himself in the Word. There is nothing more important than

the truth.

No shortage of people who proclaim what they say is truth and it is NOT.

The text is reliable, The original manuscripts. Archeology supports the bible with

people, places and events. It is unique – It took 1600 years to write the bible.

40 Authors – 60 Generations – Different classes – 3 Languages.

The Bible speaks on controversial subjects. ONE Author

It is unique in circulation – translations – honesty – influence – miracles of

prophecy (300 of them about Jesus coming) -The rise and fall of empires. The word

profoundly changes the lives of people.

It’s a profound book, your faith activates it, Salvation and Renewed lives.

Most people hear the gospel from some person, Paul heard it from God on the

road to Damascus – 3 days journey – transformed from Saul to Paul.

15

Paul thought it important to share his conversion-personal testimony. Do you

know how to share your personal testimony? Use it to share Jesus.

The Christian life- Jesus revealed to and through us. Can people see Jesus in you?

Paul hated by the Gentiles prior his conversion, then God filled his heart with love

for them, ONLY God could change a heart like that!

Does your experience come from God to your heart?

Did you hear Jesus calling you?

Lesson #2 Chapter2:1-10 Commentary Pages: 17-22

Paul’s Visit to Jerusalem & The False Brethren

NLT 1.Then fourteen years later I went back to Jerusalem again, this time with

Barnabas; and Titus came along, too. 2 I went there because God revealed to me

that I should go. While I was there, I met privately with those considered to be

leaders of the church and shared with them the message I had been preaching to

the Gentiles. I wanted to make sure that we were in agreement, for fear that all my

efforts had been wasted and I was running the race for nothing. 3 And they

supported me and did not even demand that my companion Titus be circumcised,

though he was a Gentile.

4 Even that question came up only because of some so-called believers there—

false ones, really—who were secretly brought in. They sneaked in to spy on us and

take away the freedom we have in Christ Jesus. They wanted to enslave us and

force us to follow their Jewish regulations. 5 But we refused to give in to them for a

single moment. We wanted to preserve the truth of the gospel message for you.

6 And the leaders of the church had nothing to add to what I was preaching. (By the

way, their reputation as great leaders made no difference to me, for God has no

favorites.) 7 Instead, they saw that God had given me the responsibility of

preaching the gospel to the Gentiles, just as he had given Peter the responsibility

of preaching to the Jews. 8 For the same God who worked through Peter as the

apostle to the Jews also worked through me as the apostle to the Gentiles.

9 In fact, James, Peter, and John, who were known as pillars of the church,

recognized the gift God had given me, and they accepted Barnabas and me as their

co-workers. They encouraged us to keep preaching to the Gentiles, while they

continued their work with the Jews. 10 Their only suggestion was that we keep on

helping the poor, which I have always been eager to do.

Page 17: Salt Shakin’ Sister Life Application ible Studiesdoccdn.simplesite.com/d/3d/05/285697108339852605/c7fa04f9... · 2020-01-15 · 12 Week Bible Study in the Book of Galatians Books

KJV 1.Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas and took

Titus with me also.

2 And I went up by revelation and communicated unto them that gospel which I

preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by

any means I should run, or had run, in vain.3 But neither Titus, who was with me,

being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:

4 And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to

spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into

bondage:5 To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the

truth of the gospel might continue with you.

6 But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no

matter to me: God accepteth no man's person:) for they who seemed to be

somewhat in conference added nothing to me:

7 But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was

committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter;8 (For he that

wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was

mighty in me toward the Gentiles:)

9 And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the

grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of

fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.

10 Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was

forward to do.

Notes from audio - Verses 2:1-10 “Paul visits Jerusalem & Deals with False Brethren”

David is using example of a person who gets up to say, “Jesus I love, but Paul is a

troublemaker”. That was the message going forth to the churches in Galatia.

Galatia was a region, not a city. False teachers come in and say they believe the

apostles but not Paul. Paul and the Apostles were preaching the same thing. Paul

was walking a tight rope here.

Paul wants to make it clear how he received his gospel from Jesus NOT man, not

even from the Apostles teaching him. Usually people hear the gospel from some

other person, but Paul heard directly from Jesus, this is what he was dealing with.

Paul had 2 visits to Jerusalem in 14 years. It’s not like Paul is getting taught much

by the disciples because he wasn’t there much. All the messages were from Jesus.

Paul grew up as a Pharisee (Saul). Paul was a good Jewish man, and a good Jewish

man would go to Jerusalem 3 times a year for the yearly feasts. He did not obey

the Jewish rituals.

His traveling companions were Barnabas and Titus. Acts 11:27-30 tells of this trip.

Barnabas was a Jew -The Son of Encouragement and Titus was a Gentile. These

two men were valued associates of Paul; these men were praised by Paul. If you do

a word search on Titus, you will see how many times Titus was spoken of by Paul.

God can make us remarkable Christians for Jesus right where we are, this is what

God wants.

Titus was a Gentile, most people in our church heritage are Gentiles. In Paul’s day,

it was said you couldn’t be a Christian if you were a Gentile. You had to become a

Jew, under the Mosaic Laws then become a Christian.

Put yourself under the Law of Moses

Be circumcised

Then come to Jesus. - FALSE TEACHING!

Page 22: Salt Shakin’ Sister Life Application ible Studiesdoccdn.simplesite.com/d/3d/05/285697108339852605/c7fa04f9... · 2020-01-15 · 12 Week Bible Study in the Book of Galatians Books

22

A group of people in the church were teaching this. This was a big deal for Paul to

share the truth about this lie in Jerusalem.

Titus was not circumcised – He was a Christian. Paul having Titus with him caused

problems with these false brethren.

When Paul met with the big shots privately, so if there were conflicts it would be

handled in privacy, not public. Being right doesn’t give us the permission to be

rude.

Paul was NOT going to allow Titus to be circumcised to adhere to their false

teachings. NO WAY! He is not under the law; he was under Grace!

The false brethren did not think they were false, it’s not like they wore a name tag

on their coat saying they were false teachers. They really thought they were right;

how is a person saved – Jesus or the Mosaic Law?

They came in by way of deception, they sounded righty UNTIL they talked about

the Law. Sneaky! They were legalistic and wanted all Christians to be in bondage.

Paul was stubborn, he was not going to give in to this false teaching. Stubborn

about the TRUTH!

Paul had Timothy (Gentile) circumcised but refused that Titus be circumcised.

Why? Out of LOVE for offended brothers for the gospel. But to have Titus

circumcised would have been compromising the Gospel. No Way! Paul gave up for

love, but not for compromising. We will do out of love what we wouldn’t do

otherwise.

Again, Paul tells how he received the gospel from Jesus, not man.

Sometimes we think we can receive some unique power or gift from some unique

teacher/preacher. (Listen to David personal story on this audio of what he did) We

receive from Jesus and the Holy Spirit and His Word.

Don’t wait from someone else to lead you into some experience. Your foundation

walk needs to be with Jesus.

One Gospel - One Message for everybody - Jew – Gentile

Rich – Poor, Smart -not so smart – one race or another, EVERYONE can come to

Jesus!

Lesson #3 Chapter 2:11-21 Commentary Pages: 22-36

When Paul Rebuked Peter & By What We Do or by What Jesus Has Done?

NLT

Paul Confronts Peter-11 But when Peter came to Antioch, I had to oppose him to his face, for what he did was very wrong. 12 When he first arrived, he ate with the Gentile believers, who were not circumcised. But afterward, when some friends of James came, Peter wouldn’t eat with the Gentiles anymore. He was afraid of criticism from these people who insisted on the necessity of circumcision. 13 As a result, other Jewish believers followed Peter’s hypocrisy, and even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy.

14 When I saw that they were not following the truth of the gospel message, I said

to Peter in front of all the others, “Since you, a Jew by birth, have discarded the

Jewish laws and are living like a Gentile, why are you now trying to make these

Gentiles follow the Jewish traditions?

15 “You and I are Jews by birth, not ‘sinners’ like the Gentiles. 16 Yet we know that a

person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And

we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because

of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be

made right with God by obeying the law.”

17 But suppose we seek to be made right with God through faith in Christ and then

we are found guilty because we have abandoned the law. Would that mean Christ

has led us into sin? Absolutely not! 18 Rather, I am a sinner if I rebuild the old

system of law I already tore down. 19 For when I tried to keep the law, it

condemned me. So, I died to the law—I stopped trying to meet all its

requirements—so that I might live for God. 20 My old self has been crucified with

Christ It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So, I live in this earthly body

by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not

treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right

with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.

KJV 11 But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he

was to be blamed.12 For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the

Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing

them which were of the circumcision.

13 And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also

was carried away with their dissimulation.

14 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the

gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the

manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to

live as do the Jews?15 We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles,

16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of

Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by

the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law

shall no flesh be justified.

17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found

sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.18 For if I build again the

things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.19 For I through the law am

dead to the law, that I might live unto God.

20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me:

and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who

loved me, and gave himself for me.21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if

righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

Your Own Life Proves It & Father Abraham Had Many Sons

NLT

The Law and Faith in Christ- Oh, foolish Galatians! Who has cast an evil spell on you? For the meaning of Jesus Christ’s death was made as clear to you as if you had seen a picture of his death on the cross. 2 Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law of Moses? Of course not! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Christ. 3 How foolish can you be? After starting your new lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort? 4 Have you experienced so much for nothing? Surely it was not in vain, was it?

5 I ask you again, does God give you the Holy Spirit and work miracles among you

because you obey the law? Of course not! It is because you believe the message

you heard about Christ.

6 In the same way, “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous

because of his faith.”7 The real children of Abraham, then, are those who put their

faith in God.

8 What’s more, the Scriptures looked forward to this time when God would make

the Gentiles right in his sight because of their faith. God proclaimed this good news

to Abraham long ago when he said, “All nations will be blessed through you.” 9 So

all who put their faith in Christ share the same blessing Abraham received because

of his faith.

KJV 3 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth,

before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among

you?2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law,

or by the hearing of faith?3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now

made perfect by the flesh?

4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.5 He therefore that

ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the

works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it

was accounted to him for righteousness.

7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of

Abraham.8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen

through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all

nations be blessed.

9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

Lesson #5 Chapter 3:10-29 Commentary Pages: 45-59

God’s Kind of Jailbreak & Your Identity in Three Dimensions

These two audios are a must to listen to, very helpful!

NLT

10 But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under his

curse, for the Scriptures say, “Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey

all the commands that are written in God’s Book of the Law.” 11 So it is clear that

no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures

say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”12 This way of faith is very

different from the way of law, which says, “It is through obeying the law that a

person has life.”

13 But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was

hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is

written in the Scriptures, “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”14 Through

Christ Jesus, God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised to

Abraham, so that we who are believers might receive the promised Holy Spirit

through faith.

The Law and God’s Promise-15 Dear brothers and sisters, here’s an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or amend an irrevocable agreement, so it is in this case. 16 God gave the promises to Abraham and his child and notice that the Scripture doesn’t say “to his children,” as if it meant many descendants. Rather, it says “to his child”—and that, of course, means Christ. 17 This is what I am trying to say: The agreement God made with Abraham could not be canceled 430 years later when God gave the law to Moses. God would be breaking his promise. 18 For if the inheritance could be received by keeping the law, then it would not be the result of accepting God’s promise. But God graciously gave it to Abraham as a promise.

19 Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise to show

people their sins. But the law was designed to last only until the coming of the

child who was promised. God gave his law through angels to Moses, who was the

mediator between God and the people.

Page 37: Salt Shakin’ Sister Life Application ible Studiesdoccdn.simplesite.com/d/3d/05/285697108339852605/c7fa04f9... · 2020-01-15 · 12 Week Bible Study in the Book of Galatians Books

37

20 Now a mediator is helpful if more than one party must reach an agreement. But

God, who is one, did not use a mediator when he gave his promise to Abraham.

21 Is there a conflict, then, between God’s law and God’s promises? Absolutely not!

If the law could give us new life, we could be made right with God by obeying

it. 22 But the Scriptures declare that we are all prisoners of sin, so we receive God’s

promise of freedom only by believing in Jesus Christ.

God’s Children through Faith-23 Before the way of faith in Christ was available to us, we were placed under guard by the law. We were kept in protective custody, so to speak, until the way of faith was revealed.

24 Let me put it another way. The law was our guardian (an over-seerer – one who

disciplines and watches and corrects our conduct – like a student in school) until

Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through

faith. 25 And now that the way of faith has come, we no longer need the law as our

guardian.

26 For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes. 28 There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you

are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and

God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you.

KJV 10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written,

Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book

of the law to do them.11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God,

it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in

them.13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for

us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

Page 38: Salt Shakin’ Sister Life Application ible Studiesdoccdn.simplesite.com/d/3d/05/285697108339852605/c7fa04f9... · 2020-01-15 · 12 Week Bible Study in the Book of Galatians Books

38

14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ;

that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.15 Brethren, I speak

after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be

confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.

16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to

seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.17 And this I say,

that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was

four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the

promise of none effect.

18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to

Abraham by promise.19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of

transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it

was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.21 Is the law then

against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which

could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.

22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus

Christ might be given to them that believe.

23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which

should afterwards be revealed.4 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring

us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.26 For ye are

all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.27 For as many of you as have been

baptized into Christ have put on Christ.28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is

neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ

Jesus.29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to

the promise.

Lesson #6 Chapter 4:1-20 Commentary Pages: 60-74

The Privilege of Calling God “Daddy” & Appealing from the Heart of an Apostle

Galatians 4:1-20

NLT 1.Think of it this way. If a father dies and leaves an inheritance for his young children, those children are not much better off than slaves until they grow up, even though they actually own everything their father had. 2 They have to obey their guardians until they reach whatever age their father set. 3 And that’s the way it was with us before Christ came. We were like children; we were slaves to the basic spiritual principles of this world. 4 But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the

law. 5 God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he

could adopt us as his very own children.6 And because we are his children, God has

sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba,

Father.” 7 Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child And since you are his

child, God has made you his heir.

Paul’s Concern for the Galatians

8 Before you Gentiles knew God, you were slaves to so-called gods that do not even

exist. 9 So now that you know God (or should I say, now that God knows you), why

do you want to go back again and become slaves once more to the weak and

useless spiritual principles of this world? 10 You are trying to earn favor with God by

observing certain days or months or seasons or years. 11 I fear for you. Perhaps all

my hard work with you was for nothing. 12 Dear brothers and sisters, I plead with

you to live as I do in freedom from these things, for I have become like you

Gentiles—free from those laws.

You did not mistreat me when I first preached to you. 13 Surely you remember that

I was sick when I first brought you the Good News. 14 But even though my

condition tempted you to reject me, you did not despise me or turn me away. No,

you took me in and cared for me as though I were an angel from God or even

Christ Jesus himself. 15 Where is that joyful and grateful spirit you felt then? I am

sure you would have taken out your own eyes and given them to me if it had been

possible. 16 Have I now become your enemy because I am telling you the truth?

17 Those false teachers are so eager to win your favor, but their intentions are not

good. They are trying to shut you off from me so that you will pay attention only to

them. 18 If someone is eager to do good things for you, that’s all right; but let them

do it all the time, not just when I’m with you.

19 Oh, my dear children! I feel as if I’m going through labor pains for you again, and

they will continue until Christ is fully developed in your lives. 20 I wish I were with

you right now so I could change my tone. But at this distance I don’t know how

else to help you.

KJV 1.Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant,

though he be lord of all;2 But is under tutors and governors until the time

appointed of the father.

3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the

world:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made

of a woman, made under the law,

5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of

sons.6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your

hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of

God through Christ.8 Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto

them which by nature are no gods.

9 But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye

again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in

bondage?10 Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.

11 I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in Vain.12 Brethren, I

beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all.

13 Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the

first.14 And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but

received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.

15 Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had

been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to

me.16 Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?

17 They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye

might affect them.18 But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing,

and not only when I am present with you.

19 My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,20 I

desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of

you.

Lesson #7 Chapter 4:21-31 Commentary Pages: 74-80

Isaac or Ishmael?

NLT

21 Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from

him, 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is

corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and

attitudes. 24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and

holy.

25 So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the

same body. 26 And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go

down while you are still angry, 27 for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

28 If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and

then give generously to others in need. 29 Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let

everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an

encouragement to those who hear them.

30 And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he

has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of

redemption.31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as

well as all types of evil behavior.

KJV

21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in

Jesus:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is

corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;23 And be renewed in the spirit of your

mind;

24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and

true holiness.25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his

neighbour: for we are members one of another.

55

26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:27 Neither give

place to the devil.

28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his

hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.29 Let

no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to

the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of

redemption.31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil

speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

Lesson #8 Chapter 5:1-12 Commentary Pages: 81-91

Standing Fast in the Liberty of Jesus & How to Live in the Liberty of Jesus

NLT

So, Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get

tied up again in slavery to the law.

2 Listen! I, Paul, tell you this: If you are counting on circumcision to make you right

with God, then Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3 I’ll say it again. If you are trying

to find favor with God by being circumcised, you must obey every regulation in the

whole law of Moses. 4 For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by

keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from

God’s grace.

5 But we who live by the Spirit eagerly wait to receive by faith the righteousness

God has promised to us. 6 For when we place our faith in Christ Jesus, there is no

benefit in being circumcised or being uncircumcised. What is important is faith

expressing itself in love.

7 You were running the race so well. Who has held you back from following the

truth? 8 It certainly isn’t God, for he is the one who called you to freedom. 9 This

false teaching is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of

dough! 10 I am trusting the Lord to keep you from believing false teachings. God will

judge that person, whoever he is, who has been confusing you.

11 Dear brothers and sisters, if I were still preaching that you must be circumcised—

as some say I do—why am I still being persecuted? If I were no longer preaching

salvation through the cross of Christ, no one would be offended. 12 I just wish that

those troublemakers who want to mutilate you by circumcision would mutilate

themselves.

13 For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t

use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve

one another in love. 14 For the whole law can be summed up in this one command:

“Love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you are always biting and devouring one

another, watch out! Beware of destroying one another.

Page 60: Salt Shakin’ Sister Life Application ible Studiesdoccdn.simplesite.com/d/3d/05/285697108339852605/c7fa04f9... · 2020-01-15 · 12 Week Bible Study in the Book of Galatians Books

60

Living by the Spirit’s Power

16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your

sinful nature craves. 17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite

of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of

what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other,

so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. 18 But when you are directed

by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.

KJV

Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free and be not

entangled again with the yoke of bondage.2 Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye

be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.

3 For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the

whole law.4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified

by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.6 For in Jesus

Christ neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith which

worketh by love.7 Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the

truth?

8 This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you.9 A little leaven leaveneth the

whole lump.10 I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none

otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever

he be.11 And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer

persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased.12 I would they were even cut

off which trouble you.

13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an

occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.14 For all the law is fulfilled in

one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.15 But if ye bite and

devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.16 This I

say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.17 For the

flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are

contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.18 But

if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

The Works of the Flesh

NLT 19 When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear:

sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility,

quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension,

division, 21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell

you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the

Kingdom of God.

KJV 19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication,

uncleanness, lasciviousness,0 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations,

wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,21 Envying’s, murders, drunkenness, retellings, and

such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that

they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Lesson #10 Chapter 5:22-26 Commentary Pages: 97-103

The Fruit of the Spirit

NLT 22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace,

patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is

no law against these things!

24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their

sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. 25 Since we are living by the

Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. 26 Let us not

become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.

KJV 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness,

faith,23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.24 And they that are

Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.25 If we live in the

Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking

one another, envying one another.

Lesson #11 Chapter 6:1-10 Commentary Pages: 104-110

Don’t Give Up Doing Good

NLT We Harvest What We Plant- Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by

some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the

right path. ,And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. 2 Share each

other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. 3 If you think you are too

important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.

4 Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job

well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. 5 For we are each

responsible for our own conduct.6 Those who are taught the word of God should provide

for their teachers, sharing all good things with them.

7 Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you

plant. 8 Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death

from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life

from the Spirit. 9 So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will

reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. 10 Therefore, whenever we have the

opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.

KJV

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in

the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.2 Bear ye one

another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.3 For if a man think himself to be

something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.4 But let every man prove his own

work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.5 For every

man shall bear his own burden.6 Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto

him that teacheth in all good things.7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for

whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of

the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life

everlasting.9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we

faint not.10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially

unto them who are of the household of faith.

Lesson #12 Chapter 6:11-18 Commentary Pages: 110-115

Dead to the World

NLT

Paul’s Final Advice-11 NOTICE WHAT LARGE LETTERS I USE AS I WRITE THESE CLOSING WORDS IN

MY OWN HANDWRITING. 12 Those who are trying to force you to be circumcised want to look good to others. They don’t want to be persecuted for teaching that the cross of Christ alone can save. 13 And even those who advocate circumcision don’t keep the whole law themselves. They only want you to be circumcised so they can boast about it and claim you as their disciples.

14 As for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus

Christ. Because of that cross, my interest in this world has been crucified, and the

world’s interest in me has also died. 15 It doesn’t matter whether we have been

circumcised or not. What counts is whether we have been transformed into a new

creation. 16 May God’s peace and mercy be upon all who live by this principle; they

are the new people of God.

17 From now on, don’t let anyone trouble me with these things. For I bear on my

body the scars that show I belong to Jesus.18 Dear brothers and sisters, may the

grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

KJV 11 Ye see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand.12 As many as

desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest

they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ.13 For neither they themselves who

are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in

your flesh.14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,

by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but a

new creature.16 And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and

mercy, and upon the Israel of God.17 From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in

my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.18 Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be

with your spirit. Amen.
