Samaritan House is just like people. We learn, we change, we grow. Because after all, we are all about people.

We’ve all experienced what it’s like to work towards something. Maybe you put your passion and soul into a project. Perhaps you nurtured something with precious time and care. With each step, those experiences shaped you, and those challenges became a part of the journey. You look back with remembrance to where you first began and to where you are now.

Samaritan House has seen transitions and growth in the last 45 years. This year alone, we expanded our reach with the opening of Samaritan House South and the strengthening of relationships with local agencies.

The many possibilities of what the next 45 years will bring are exciting. As economic inequality grows and more people are being pushed to the financial edge, I envision an even greater need for our services. I am looking forward to the expansion of the Food & Nutrition program, including the Food Pharmacy. I am also excited for the possibility of making Kids Closet available in more places. Most of all, I am looking forward to the expansion of the Financial Empowerment program. With more economic opportunities, our clients will thrive, not just survive. That benefits our entire community.

Our services have been more than a safety net for generations. Our programs and case management approach provide the tools necessary to restore dignity and self-worth deserved by all. They unlock hope.

Yes, the next 45 years will bring change, but one part will never change: this community, the teamwork of ordinary yet remarkable people, caring for the people around them.

W hen you’ve been self-sustaining and independently strong for most of life, it’s hard to reach out for help for fear of humiliation and shame. This is a continuing story of hope even when life hits rock bottom.

Roberta was a vocational nurse for 30 years, a calling fit for someone like herself who regularly volunteered and demonstrated a heart for those who’d fallen on hard times. In 2013, she began experiencing a gradual and consistent series of health issues ranging from thyroid, kidney, spinal, and cancer related complications that would result in over 13 surgeries. After halting work and dipping into her savings for the next two years, Roberta found herself in the deep end. She’d heard of Samaritan House through her own referrals to patients. “As a nurse,

if you see somebody whose children are hungry, you’re able to give word that these people can help you.”

She bravely took a step forward and reached out to Samaritan House for food assistance. “I just can’t tell you how grateful I

am. When there’s no milk, nothing in the cupboard, I know I can come here for help.” Eventually, she also found financial

assistance with the support of Rhonda, Samaritan House’s financial empowerment manager.

Her challenges are not yet over, but she finds strength through faith, positivity, and even the medicine

of humor. Still a licensed nurse, she dreams of returning to the oncology department in the

pediatric ward. Roberta says “Each person who comes to Samaritan House is an

individual and they’re treated as such, whether it’s for a short time, or as in my

case, for a long time, and it’s done without judgement. What you do

here at Samaritan House is near and dear to my heart because it’s what I’ve done as a nurse”.She wants to empower others to know that there is no need to feel shame. Rather, she wants others to channel those feelings into gratitude. “Samaritan House is an entity that is life changing, it was here for me to reach out to when there was nowhere else to go, and it’s saved my life in more ways than one.”

OUR IMPACT

When JT lost her job, she and her son were evicted from their home. Through a simple internet search, JT found Samaritan House.

“Last year I was on the brink of being homeless and I had nowhere to go, but now we are on a path towards stability. My son is now in Burlingame School District and I’m working in Cupertino. I feel so blessed. I couldn’t believe an organization like this could help us believe more in humanity. I am eternally grateful for the people at Samaritan House who didn’t turn their backs on us.”

“I’ve said to everybody at Samaritan House that I never hoped to need this kind of help. But when I did need this help, I was extremely grateful that the help was there. There’s this stigma that people needing assistance are lazy, but I like the philosophy of Samaritan House. It’s not just about giving to where someone stays unemployed. Samaritan House is working towards bettering people and helping people get back on their feet.

If Samaritan House hadn’t helped me out when they did, I wouldn’t have the option to be near family. I’m back on my feet with a full time job with benefits and my kids are going to a great school. I was able to get clothing and diapers for them through Kid’s Closet too. Samaritan House brought me back into community. Now that I know there’s an organization like Samaritan House – it makes me want to give back.”

The average Samaritan House client moves from crisis to stability within three-to-six months of walking through our doors. We combine access to food, clothing, housing, and healthcare with personalized case management to give our clients a way to combat all the pressures of

poverty that they may face.

“I used to live in my car. It was really hard, I’ll never forget those days. Living in a situation like that, I couldn’t do something as simple as cooking. I had cold meals. Now I have my own place, and it changed my life. Everything just came together all at once. Even though I saw a lot of people getting connected at the shelter, I just never thought that it would happen to me. I want to thank Eric, my case manager, for taking me on this journey. He acted like an older brother to me. Today I walked into my apartment and said to myself, ‘wow, I got a beautiful place to call home.’”

Before coming to Samaritan House, Justina had never had a medical checkup. She had been getting food at our food pantry for some time but later found reassurance from the clinic professionals in managing her health.

“I feel safe and thankful for the help I’ve received. In every way possible, I’ve been helped. There’s even a difference in the foods I eat. With help from the food pharmacy, I’m eating more vegetables and beans to control my diabetes.”

Samaritan House celebrates the formal launch of Samaritan House South in East Palo Alto and Samaritan House Menlo Park Satellite in Belle Haven,

Menlo Park. These two new sites offer supportive services to individuals who struggle to meet basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter and health care. Accessibility to these services keep San Mateo County residents in their homes and allow them to get help right where they live. With the expertise of partnering local agencies, Samaritan House will continue the fight against poverty for years to come. Lakesha Roberts-Evans, Ecumenical Hunger Program’s Associate Director, says, “EHP and Samaritan House South have developed a strong partnership that focuses on helping families in need in our community. By providing complementary services to one another, we are able to better serve families and effect greater long-term success. This partnership personifies our mission of ‘neighbors helping neighbors’ with food and so much more. We look forward to our continued partnership with Samaritan House South.”

Wamboi, a volunteer of 1EPA and resident of East Palo Alto since 1971, shares why this backpack giveaway is important to her. “I can see the excitement on the children’s faces when they receive their backpacks. Education changes everything. When people are able to go to school, it opens doors to new opportunities.”

SEASON OF SHARING FUNDIn addition, Samaritan House is the fiscal agent for the SF Chronicle Season of Sharing Fund. This fund provides financial assistance to families and underserved individuals in San Mateo County.  More than 257 families were provided a total of $772,283 emergency assistance county-wide.
