Challenge
Jesus Christ did not dieto make your life better.
Jesus Christ died to give you a better life!
The Better Life
2 Corinthians 5:17Therefore if anyone is in Christ,he is a new creature;the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
The Better Life
• Discipleship is the Better Life!
Matthew 6:33But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Defining Discipleship
• Challenge • First Century Discipleship• Disciple Do Not Live for Themselves
• Slave: Sin or God• Obedience: Mark of a Disciple
• 5 S’s of Discipleship
First‐Century Discipleship
• Full‐time apprenticeship • Traveling the country under austere conditions
• Leaving friends and family
• Usually single because a man needed the permission of his wife if he wanted to leave for more than 30 days to follow a sage
Luke 9
57 As they were going along the road, someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
Comfort and Security
Luke 9
59 And He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” 60 But He said to him, “Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God.”
Comfort and Security
Luke 9
61 Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord; but first permit me to say good‐bye to those at home.” 62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”‐ Reference to Elijah calling Elisha.‐ Elisha left everything in order to take on the mantle of the prophet.
Complete Commitment
Luke 14
25Now large crowds were going along with Him; and He turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.
Priority
Luke 14
25Now large crowds were going along with Him; and He turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. ‐ Hate: to love less than the primary object of affection‐ Jesus is challenging the crowd to identify the true believers from the curiosity seekers
Priority
Luke 14
28 For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it? 29Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’
Long‐Range Process
Luke 14
31Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32Or else, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.
Consequences
Luke 14
33 So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.
‐ A doulos owns nothing.‐ A doulos must hold nothing back from the master.‐ A doulos has all of the master’s resources available to him/her in order to fulfill the master’s commands.
Control
Luke 18
18 A ruler questioned Him, saying, “Good Teacher [Rabbi], what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments, ‘DO NOTCOMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, HONOR YOUR FATHER ANDMOTHER.’” 21 And he said, “All these things I have kept from my youth.”
1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
Luke 18
22When Jesus heard this, He said to him, “One thing you still lack; sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 23 But when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. ‐ Possessions were his idol‐ Jesus exposes that the ruler that He did not
keep the commandments!‐ Tangible demonstration of the true condition of the young ruler’s heart.
Luke 18
24 And Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
‐ Hard to “give up” control of possessions to God‐ Hard to rely on God and not on self‐ Hard to keep possessions from becoming an idol
Luke 18
26 They who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” 27 But He said, “The things that are impossible with people are possible with God.”‐ Culture taught that the rich had found favor with God‐ If the rich could not be saved, how could the common or the poor possibly be saved?
‐ The impossible is possible with God not only because of his omnipotence, but because His economy is not the economy of man.
‐ Economy: management or mode of operation
Luke 18
28 Peter said, “Behold, we have left our own homes and followed You.” 29 And He said to them, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30who will not receive many times as much at this time and in the age to come, eternal life.”‐ Relationships: Luke 9‐ Possessions: Luke 18‐ Beyond restoration to reward

Romans 14:7‐8

8 for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord;
therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.
Galatians 2:20
20 I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

charizomai (χαρίζομαι) to show favor or kindness,
1 Peter 1:17
17 If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; 18 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers,19but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ
1 Peter 1:17

5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a δούλος, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! 16 Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either ofsin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?
Romans 6
17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed,18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
Romans 6
19 I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification.
Romans 6
20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.21 Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is death.
Romans 6
22 But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life.23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
