PUT A BOW ON IT: The NL West champion Dodgers close the
regular season with a three-game series against the San Diego Padres.
The jam-packed weekend includes Friday Night Fireworks presented
by Denny’s tonight, La Gran Fiesta Viva Los Dodgers presented by
Coca-Cola, State Farm and Time Warner Cable starting at 2:00 p.m.
tomorrow and Fan Appreciation Day Sunday.
With a win tonight, the Dodgers will surpass 90 wins for the
third consecutive season, a feat that had only previously been
accomplished twice in franchise history: 1976-78 (3) and
1951-56 (6).
Los Angeles has posted a 52-26 (.667) record at home this
year, on pace to tie with the 1978 and 1991 clubs for the
second-best mark in Dodger Stadium history. The Dodgers
will need a sweep this weekend to catch the 1980 club,
which holds the record for most home wins (55) and best
winning percentage (.671) in Los Angeles history.
The Dodgers wrapped up their road schedule yesterday with
a 3-2 win over the Giants, finishing the season with a 37-44
record away from Los Angeles.
The Dodgers lead the Rockies by one home run (183) in their
bid to lead the National League in homers for the first time
since 1983.
Prior to tonight’s game, the Dodgers will honor the
organization’s Branch Rickey Minor League Player of the
Year Alex Verdugo and Pitcher of the Year Zach Lee. The
duo will be available to the media after the Dodgers’ batting
practice in the dugout.
GET WELL SOON: The Dodgers would like to send their best
wishes to Vin Scully, who will miss tonight’s game with a cold.
Scully is expected to miss the entire three-game series this weekend.
MEET THE METS: The Dodgers will open postseason play a week
from today on Friday, October 9 against the National League East
champion New York Mets. The best-of-five NLDS will open at the
home of whichever team finishes the regular season with a better
record. The clubs both hold 89-70 records heading into tonight’s
games, but New York has the tiebreaker over Los Angeles by virtue of
its 4-3 win in the season series between the clubs.
On Tuesday, the Dodgers won their third consecutive NL
West title and reached the postseason for the third year in a
row, a feat that has never been accomplished before in
franchise history.
Los Angeles captured its 14th NL West division title and will
be playing “October Baseball” for the 29th time (20
th in Los
Angeles) in franchise history. The Dodgers have advanced to
the postseason six times in the last 10 seasons, including
three NLCS appearances (2008, ’09, ’13) in that time.
CONSISTENT RESULTS: The Dodgers started October with a win
yesterday after finishing the month of September with a 15-13 record,
their 12th consecutive winning month in the regular season (excluding
March & October). It marked the seventh time since moving to Los
Angeles that the Dodgers have posted a .500 or better record in every
month, with the club reaching the World Series five of the six previous
times they accomplished the feat:
Dodgers, .500 or Better in Every Month of Season – Since 1958
(April to September Only)(With Postseason Result)
1965 Won World Series
1966 Lost World Series
1974 Lost World Series
1978 Lost World Series
1988 Won World Series
2014 Lost NLDS
2015 TBD
ALL ‘DRE, EVERY DAY: Andre Ethier tied a career high (also:
2006) with his seventh triple of the season yesterday and has been one
of baseball’s hottest hitters over the last few months, ranking second
in the NL (min. 125 AB) with a .346 batting average (44-for-127) in
49 games since July 29 (Arizona’s David Peralta, 1st, .360). Ethier
hopes to continues his run of success tonight against the Padres,
against whom he’s hit .410 (16-for-39) with four doubles, a triple, two
homers and six RBI in 14 games this season.
Ethier has hit 23 home runs against the Padres during the
course of his career, the most of any active player. He also
leads active players with 87 RBI vs. San Diego, while batting
.296 (155-for-523) in 161 games.
With his next double, Ethier will tie Eric Karros (302) for
third on the all-time Los Angeles doubles list. The Los
Angeles record is held by Steve Garvey (333) with Willie
Davis (321) in second.
GOING GONZO: Adrian Gonzalez has posted a .328/.397/.738
slashline in 16 games against the Padres this year, going 20-for-61 with
four doubles, seven homers and 16 RBI against his former club. Were he
to homer against San Diego this weekend, he would tie Darryl
Strawberry (1991) and Jimmy Wynn (1974) for the most home runs hit
by a Dodger in a single season against the Padres (8).
Gonzalez led the Dodgers in hits, home runs and RBI in 2013
and is all but assured to do so again this season with 155 hits, 28
homers and 89 RBI in 153 games. He will likely become just the
fifth player in franchise history to have done so in multiple
seasons:
Players to Lead Dodgers in Hits, HR & Runs in 2+ Seasons
(since RBI became an official MLB statistic in 1920)
Player # (Seasons)
Babe Herman 3 (1926, 1930, 1931)
Steve Garvey 2 (1977, 1979)
Eric Karros 2 (1995, 1999)
Shawn Green 2 (2001, 2002)

CAN’T SLOW HIM DOWN: The Dodgers would like to wish a
happy 83rd
birthday to Maury Wills! The 1962 NL MVP and the
franchise’s all-time steals leader with 490 stolen bases remains active
in the Dodger organization as an instructor at both the major and
minor league levels.
