The Caritas Corner A family of seven was in tears as they watched firefighters try to save their home in far South Bexar County. “We lost everything in the house and only have what we had on our back and feet” said the homeowner. “Fortunately, all five children, ages 5 to 17, made it safely out of the house. However, they were unable to get any of their belongings out – belongings like much needed equipment for their youngest son who has cerebral palsy” reported KSAT-12 News. For some reason, the insurance settlement was not sufficient to replace their belongings or get them started on a new home. They are living in a small RV trailer on their property. As a gift of kindness, we delivered – through the Caritas Fund -- two $1,000 gift cards to help ease the fami-ly’s burden and help replace their personal necessities. Additionally, we will continue to help the family find a cheap-er alternative to the mobile home they are trying to purchase and help get a better resolution on the insurance settlement issue. Despite their loss, the family said “they are grateful to still have each other”. This Caritas – or “Charity” -- Fund is administered by the San Francescani Society and funded through the second collection normally on the third Sunday of each month. Its purpose is to assist recipients – who through no fault of their own have fallen on hard times and have recognizable “one time” needs to help get back on their feet.

In addition to the once a month second collection, the Caritas Fund accepts individual as well as business

donations. Donations can be mailed to: Henry Garcia, Treasurer, San Francescani Society, P.O. Box 782474, San Antonio, TX 78278-2474.

We are continually looking for additional brothers and sisters in need. Referrals can be made to Ron Bucchi, Society President, by leaving a message at the SFdP office at 210-227-0548.Thank you for your continued generosity and support.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s Independence Day week, and there is a link worth tracing between the Declara on of Inde-pendence and the language of liturgy. One of the signers of the Declara on on that July 4 long ago was Charles Carroll, probably the wealthiest man in the colonies and one of the few Catholics on the poli cal scene. As a flour-ish to his signature, he sought to dis nguish himself from other prominent ci zens bearing the same name by penning “Charles Carroll of Carrolltown”—a defiant “come and get me if you dare” postscript aimed at the Bri sh.

Carroll’s brother John was a priest and patriot who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. By 1791 he had assembled a synod, or assembly of dele-gates, to launch that task formally. Archbishop Carroll wanted to gain acceptance of our faith by American people who mistrusted our cus-toms and could not comprehend our liturgy. He made the amazing proposal to Rome that our liturgy should be prayed not in La n, but in the vernacular, English. His wish was denied, but one hundred sixty years later, his deep desire helped the American bishops and scholars at the Second Va can Council to win the vote in favor of the vernacular not just for the United States, but for the Church throughout the world.
