PRIESTS RETIREMENT FUND For more than 156 years, priests of the Archdio-cese of San Francisco have served the Catholic faithful gen-erously and well in the counties of San Francisco, Marin and San Mateo. Our priests commit their lives to bringing Christ to us. Throughout our lives...from baptism to death, through good times and difficult times, our priests have been there to celebrate, counsel, encourage, and bear wit-ness to the power of God’s love. Sharing in the priesthood of Christ, our priests are a part of every Christian family. As priests for life, they remain part of our family for life. We hope you will consider a gift to the Priests Retirement Fund. Our priests have selflessly given much to us, now we can return this gift through our support. Your generous gift to the Priests Retirement Fund in today’s Second Collection will be a tremendous blessing for our retired Archdiocesan priests—current and future.

CATECHISM CORNER #50 by Jerry Back This week continues our understanding of what the Cate-chism calls the "battle of prayer." As mentioned previously, we learn that to "overcome these obstacles, we must battle to gain humility, trust, and perseverance." This week's col-umn is about perseverance. Question: How often should we pray? Answer from the Catechism of the Catholic Church: 2742 "Pray constantly . . . always and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father." St. Paul adds, "Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. Against our dullness and lazi-ness, the battle of prayer is that of humble, trusting, and persevering love. This love opens our hearts to three enlightening and life-giving facts of faith about prayer: 2743 It is always possible to pray: The time of the Christian is that of the risen Christ who is with us always, no matter what tempests may arise. Our time is in the hands of God: It is possible to offer fervent prayer even while walk-ing in public or strolling alone, or seated in your shop, . . . while buying or selling, . . . or even while cooking. 2744 Prayer is a vital necessity. Proof from the contrary is no less convincing: if we do not allow the Spirit to lead us, we fall back into the slavery of sin. How can the Holy Spirit be our life if our heart is far from him? Nothing is equal to prayer; for what is impossible it makes possible, what is dif-ficult, easy. . . . For it is impossible, utterly impossible, for the man who prays eagerly and invokes God ceaselessly ever to sin. Those who pray are certainly saved; those who do not pray are certainly damned.

2745 Prayer and Christian life are inseparable, for they concern the same love and the same renunciation, proceeding from love; the same filial and loving conformity with the Father's plan of love; the same transforming union in the Holy Spirit who conforms us more and more to Christ Jesus; the same love for all men, the love with which Jesus has loved us. "Whatever you ask the Father in my name, he [will] give it to you. This I command you, to love one another."

He "prays without ceasing" who unites prayer to works and good works to prayer. Only in this way can we consider as realizable the principle of pray-ing without ceasing.

Dear Padre What does the Church teach about organ transplants? Are organ transplants permitted by the Catholic Church? Zach Dear Zach, Basically, the answer to this question is yes, under certain conditions. The Catechism of the Catholic Church affirms that “Organ transplants are in conformity with the moral law if the physical and psychological dangers and risks to the donor are proportionate to the good that is sought for the recipient” (2296). Organ transplants from a dead person to a living person must fulfill two additional criteria: 1) The donor must give free and informed consent prior to death, or those who legitimately speak on the donor’s behalf must do so at the time of death; and 2) the donor must be dead be-fore the tissue can be harvested—in other words, the donor must not be declared dead prematurely, nor may the do-nor’s death be hastened just to use the organs. The CCC adds, “Organ donation after death is a noble and meritori-ous act and is to be encouraged as an expression of gener-ous solidarity.” The transplantation of organs from a living donor must fulfill two additional criteria: 1) the removal of the organ must not seriously impair the donor’s health or bodily function; and 2) the donor must make an informed and free decision recognizing the potential risks involved. September 20 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today Jesus tells us, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” These words are unsettling, but we all know that we definitely need to hear them. So much about our society pushes us to be the best and to get ahead. There is nothing inherently wrong with being the best or getting ahead. Today’s reminder to be humble can be a welcome one, though, especially when, in our striving to be the best, we lose sight of the things that really matter. How can you find a way to balance the need to be the best—to get ahead-with the Gospel summons to be humble of heart?
