  • 4 SEA GRAPES FOR JELLYby ethel snyder

Towards the end of Septem-ber the sea grapes growing onSanibel Island in the Gulf ofMexico start to turn pink andripen. So one fine morning atbreakfast at Island Inn Char-lotta asked me if I would gowith her to pick sea grapesfor making jelly. I was delightedto accept and we started at oncein the Inn station wagon. Weeach took a large water bucketwhich we confidently expected tofill with sea grapes.

Sea grapes grow on bushesor some bushes develop intotrees and the trunks bend atodd angles like stove pipes. They are found only along trop-ical or semi-tropical beachesand the leaves are large, round,leather-like, and they shine andshine as if they were laquered. The veins are bright red andthe leaves have no stems butdrow directly on the branches.E ach spring the sea grape shedsall its leaves and the new onesare bright red, round and shiny. The wood of the tree is redand very hard. The fruit growsin long slender bunches with agrape ripening here and therealong the stem, not all at thesame time like any grape Ihad ever seen before. The ripeones fall off at the slightesttouch. The raw fruit is notpalatable to eat. Each grape hasone large center seed and itdoes make delicious flavoredcerise colored jelly. Lime orlemon juice has to be addedto make it jell. This jelly is afavorite with the guests at theInn and each year Charlottahas an entire shelf of jars inthe stock room marked SEAGRAPE.

My cocker spaniel, DollyVarden, was allowed to go alongwith us in the station wagon

ISLANDERbut she was not allowed to get out. Maria, thecook, gave us a knowing look out of the cornerof her eyes as we left, I wondered what thatmeant. It was wild country where we were going. There was prickly pear cactus to jab us. Therewere gopher holes to step into. Spanish bayonetswith spike leaves sharp as swords were to beavoided and there were other growths not con-ducive to good walking! Snakes were not to be dis-counted. The road was a poorly defined trail butwe knew it very well.

"Let 's get out here. Looks pretty good," saidCharlotta. I didn't see anything that looked good butI was a tenderfoot from the city, so agreed with herand we got out. The place was full of sea grapebushes, expecially towards the Gulf. We gingerlypicked our way but the grapes were few and spindlyand still green. "Maybe someone has alreadypicked here," I suggested. "Sure looks like it.Let 's go on farther," Charlotta replied. So backwe went to the station wagon and drove on.

"Here's a real good place," cried Charlotta. And so it was. We each quickly filled the bottomsof our pails and were picking fast when a wildanimal jumped out of the center of the thick bush.Instantly we each threw away our buckets anddashed back to the station wagon. The cocker wasyipping and jumping about to help our speed. "Whatdo you think it was?" I inquired breathlessly."Well don't tell anyone, but I think it was a rab-bit," Charlotta answered. I had thought it was apanther or at the very least a wild cat. But a rab-bit! We both felt very meek and went back to getour buckets which had managed to lose every grapewe had picked.

The next stop seemed even better and thegrapes plumped into our buckets. "Ouch," I sud-denly yowled. "What's the matter?" shoutedCharlotta from around the far side of the bush."A cactus bit me," I yelled back. "I t 's awful heretoo. I can't move," Charlotta yowled back. Wewere both in the middle of an immense clus-ter of pear cactus. How did we get into it in thefirst place! But the problem now was how to getout. The apple fruit of the cactus was starting toturn red and they make delicious jelly too. Butyou have to spear each apple fruit with a fork, cut off with a knife and wear gloves in the processto save you hands. And here we were in the mid-dle of a great patch of them. There was no easyway out but we finally managed to get back to thetrail with as few jabs as possible. We were ruf-fled and perspiring and our ardour for pickingsea grapes entirely gone.

"Don't you think we might find some grapesnearer to the Inn?" I hopefully asked. "We

might," Charlotta agreed and assoon as we found a place inwhich to turn we drove backtowards the Inn, but there wereno sea grapes along the way.

Soon afterwards we walkedinto the Inn kitchen and Maria, the cook and beloved friendof the Matthews family for morethan twenty five years, greetedus. She noticed our empty pailsbut made no comment. Insteadshe said cheerily "Thar 's abit of coffee on the stove androlls under the napie" and shepicked up our buckets and de-parted in her own car for partsunknown.

The hot coffee and rollsbolstered our morale and wecould finally laugh at ourselves. What dismal sea grape pickerswe had turned out to be. Wesat for a long time at thekitchen table waiting for Mariato get back. Finally we heardthe sound of the motor of hercar! We rushed to the dooras Maria came into the kitchencarrying the two buckets brim-ming over with large ripe, cerise, luscious, sea grapes!"Why Maria," we both ex-claimed in utter astonishment."Where did you find them?"She couldn't conceal her delightand amusement as she loftilyreplied "Yo all jes ain't knowin'whare they i s !"

    We shore ain't knowin'!
