GROWING TOGETHER

By Daniel J. McMillan, Stifel

Happy July! July is the month of our country’s in-dependence and the kickoff of our summer season.

I want to start off by thanking Jeff Winkler for all of his leadership this last year as our Santa Fe Springs Chamber president. It was my pleasure to have served on his team.

I am honored to be leading our Santa Fe Springs Chamber of Com-merce and representing our more than 500 member companies.

For over 60 years, our chamber has been providing valuable services to our businesses and supporting our local community and we are proud to be an integral part of our city’s foundation.

Now that the leadership torch has been passed to me, I am asking every-one to lend us your expertise to grow our chamber.

“To succeed as a team is to hold

all of the members accountable for their expertise.”

Mitchell Caplan, CEO, E*Trade Group Inc.

We belong to (or you should be-long to) this great organization, the Santa Fe Springs Chamber. We have resources for every sized business. We are committed to helping you strengthen your business by offering you tools and support to help you remove obstacles to growing your business.

Please reach out to our outstand-ing staff to see how we can use our expertise as your chamber to help your business succeed.

Our phenomenal chamber staff, led by our CEO, Kathie Fink, Sue Grana, Christy Lindsay and Colin Diaz all work tirelessly to administer and support the needs of our business members. They continue to make things better each and every year.

I am proud to introduce your new executive board. Sharon Wu of Roquemore, Pringle & Moore, Inc. who will serve as president-elect; Randall Courtney of DDWERKS, INC. / RedShirtPrinting.com, who will serve as vice president of member services; Debbie Baker of Simpson Advertis-ing, who will serve as vice president of public affairs; Lisa Boyajian of Ansa Insurance Services, who will serve as vice president of the Youth Enrichment Fund; Liz Buckingham of Friendly Hills Bank, who will con-tinue as treasurer; and Jeff Winkler, BreitBurn Energy, who will serve as the immediate past president.

We are also privileged to have won-derful support and a great working relationship with the city council, city management and staff.

The city council has set the stage to make this an attractive place to run a business. Amongst everyone within our community circle, we all share the same mission in being the champion of economic prosperity for our area. And with this theme, I am dedicating my term to “Growing Together.”

As we celebrate the Fourth of July each year, it’s important for us all to remember all that we have to be thankful for, as well as our collective responsibility to stimulate positive change. Newly-minted board mem-ber Scott Radcliffe, of Rad Custom Signs, shares a RAD-ically refreshing perspective on the county and the important role that chambers of com-merce play in it.

“Chamber membership has tre-mendous benefits, if you’re willing to explore them. The chamber staff does a fabulous job of providing numer-

ous opportunities for a business to grow. They offer everything from mar-keting ideas to networking events and specialized learning opportunities.

“It was one such learning opportu-nity that taught us how to send out this very email; a chamber presenta-tion and class on email marketing campaigns.

“But the greatest benefit the cham-ber has to offer is the opportunity for its members to serve. The success of a chamber centers on driving business growth at the local level. The chamber schedules events aimed at attracting

new members and providing busi-ness opportunities to the existing members.

“Many of these events, if not all, de-pend on voluntary involvement of the existing members. Volunteers looking to become even more involved may be asked to serve as ambassadors or committee members.

“If we truly want to see this nation pursue a path in a better direction, it must start at the local level. The cham-ber is a great place to begin.

“Some of the many things they provide are scholarships to local students, networking events, and numerous learning opportunities for all levels within your business; from marketing to HR and much more.

“They promote job growth with all of their business to business activities and networking events are a great place to meet prospective customers. So get involved…”

Take a few moments and identify ways that your business might be able to connect with the chamber on a deeper level.

Is there a workshop that can push your business over the hump? Is there an event that might have a contact for your next large account? Is there an advocacy issue that you need as-sistance with? Or, is there a resource that your company provides the chamber membership as a whole that businesses would benefit from being exposed to?

Whatever the reason, you owe it to yourself and your business to explore it more. As Scott states it, “ask not what your chamber can do for you…” You know the rest. GET ENGAGED!

Ask Not What Your Chamber Can Do for You...

It’s time to ‘be engaged’.Join the

Santa Fe Springs Firefighters Still Fundraising for MDA

The Santa Fe Springs Firefighters would like to thank this wonderful community for its generous support this past May as they raised funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). With the sup-port of commuters, Santa Fe Springs firefighters raised over $35,000 during the three-day fundraiser. They have set a goal to raise $40,000 for this worthy cause and continue to raise money through their website at www.filltheboot.donordrive.com/team/5294. Money raised will help fund research, provide medical equipment to children and adults suffering with muscular dystrophy, and send many kids suffering from the disease to summer camp.

Plans Underway for Santa Fe Springs Firefighters Memorial

The City of Santa Fe Springs has plans to build a Fallen Firefighters Me-morial at Fire Headquarters, located at 11300 Greenstone Avenue.

Firefighters embarked on this proj-ect hoping to create a memorial that would help commemorate Santa Fe Springs firefighters who lost their lives serving courageously in the line of duty. The memorial would stand as a tribute to four members of the Santa Fe Springs Fire Department who dedicated their life to public safety and served Santa Fe Springs honorably.

Firefighters are raising funds for this memorial through the sale of two chal-lenge coins. Challenge coins bear an organization’s insignia or emblem and are commonly used by the military, fire, and police departments, and are car-ried by the organization’s members. The Department of Fire-Rescue invites the community to obtain a custom designed coin and become part of the Fire Department’s family.

Both challenge coins have a minimum donation of $20 and are available at all four of the City’s fire stations. Proceeds from the sales of the challenge coins will be used for the construction of the Fallen Firefighter Memorial. Be part of helping memorialize those members of the Santa Fe Springs Fire Department who have lost their lives protecting the members of our community. Supplies are limited. Crime Mapping OnlineBy Captain Aviv Bar

Sharing crime information with the public and keeping residents, motorists, and businesses informed about criminal activity is a crucial element of working together to keep Santa Fe Springs a safe city. The Whittier Police Department has teamed up with Crimereports.com to provide the community with up-to-date simple access to online crime information in the city.

The online crime mapping system displays crimes which were reported to the Whittier Police Department. The user interface is very simple to navigate and allows the user to define specific date ranges, geographical locations, and crimes to display. For privacy reasons, address locations are rounded to the nearest block number. Each crime type has a different icon and when clicked, will provide the date and time of the incident.

A great feature of the crime mapping system is the ability of residents and businesses to sign up for automatic crime alerts. Users are able to define a spe-cific geographical area to be monitored and receive email notifications when a crime occurs in their area of interest.

Another feature of the crime mapping system is the ability to display on the map the exact living locations of registered sex offenders, as contained in the State of California Sex Offender Registry. By clicking on the icon, users can see the address and photo of the registrant along with identifying information.

The maps are updated daily, directly from the Whittier Police Department records management system. To access the crime mapping system for Santa Fe Springs and Whittier, go directly to www.crimereports.com and simply enter your address in the search box to get started.Aviv Bar is a captain with the Whittier Police Department and oversees the department’s Investigations Division and Santa Fe Springs Policing Team. He can be reached at (562) 567-9265 or via email at [email protected].

Supervisor Don Knabe, Congresswoman Linda Sanchez and Assembly Majority Floor Leader Ian Calderon all had a presence at the event and presented The Whole Child with certificates and words of affirmation for their impact in the community.

The newly-renovated space at the headquarters provides ample space for an expanded and enhanced environment for therapists to provide mental health and housing services. Women In Business Event a Success! The Santa Fe Springs Chamber teamed up with the Whittier Chamber for the

first “Women in Business Leadership Luncheon” on June 10. Over 100 women gathered at the Clarke Estate to meet with other women (and some men!) for an afternoon of networking and speakers. Having both chambers partner with the event provided more networking opportunities for the women.

As guests arrived they wandered through the vendor tables and were intro-duced to other attendees. Lunch was followed by speakers Monick Halm and Kim Somers. Monick spoke on “Money Mastery” and gave tips on how to increase your wealth. Kim Somers shared ways to empower yourself and increase self-confidence. Everyone received a fun “swag bag” as a parting gift.

“The Women in Business Leadership Luncheon was an amazing event which brought women in the community together for support, learning and net-working. We are excited to follow this up in 2017 with more vendors and new speakers” stated Claudia Fimbres, Women in Business chairperson for the SFS Chamber.

Vendors provided shopping and service opportunities for attendees.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals recently held an employer must include monetary payments made in lieu of benefits when calculating an employee’s regular rate of pay for purposes of determining overtime payments under the Fair Labor Standards Act (“FLSA”). Flores v. City of San Gabriel (June 2, 2016).

The ruling affects California employers, increasing the amount of overtime payments due employees and opening the door to lawsuits seeking to recover ordinary and liquidated damages over a three-year period.

Like many employers, the City of San Gabriel (“City”) offers a Flexible Benefit Plan which provides employees with a set monetary amount to purchase various benefits. Employees may decline to use these funds for medical benefits, receiving them instead as cash payments added to their paychecks.

The City did not include these cash-in-lieu of benefits payments in the calculation of nonexempt employees’ overtime rates. Fifteen current and former police officers sued the City, arguing the payments should have been included in calculating the officers’ regular rates of pay and overtime rates.

First, the Ninth Circuit determined that the City’s payment scheme was commonly considered com-pensation, even without a direct relationship to the number of hours worked.

The court emphasized the question “does not turn on whether the payment is tied to an hourly wage, but instead turns on whether the payment is a form of compensation for performing work.”

Second, The Ninth Circuit held because the City’s cash-in-lieu of benefits payments were made directly to employees, they did not qualify under Section 207(e)(4), which excludes from the regular rate of pay contributions made to a trustee or third party.

Third, the Ninth Circuit found the City liable for liquidated damages because the city failed to pro-vide sufficient evidence to show it had an honest intention to follow the dictates of the act or that it had reasonable grounds for believing its actions were in compliance.

Finally, the Ninth Circuit held the City willfully violated the FLSA because it was on notice of the FLSA’s requirements, yet took no action to assure compliance. The Ninth Circuit found the City was aware of the FLSA’s mandates because it distin-guished between “premium” payments and “ben-efit” payments.

The potential impact of this decision promises to be dramatic. Employers must review their com-pensation and benefit plans to confirm compliance with this new ruling.

Employers must be sure to add cash-in-lieu of benefits in overtime calculations for non-exempt

employees. Failure to do so will give rise to penal-ties, including liquidated (double) damages for a three-year period.

Stay tuned—if the City appeals this decision or petitions for a rehearing this may not be the last word on the issue.

For more information on this and other matters, please visit our website at www.aalrr.com.
