Rende Rende has a population of over

35.000 inhabitants and it’s in

constant expansion.

Rende has its various neighbours:

Quattromiglia, Roges, Saporito,

Commenda and Arcavacata.

Several service industries are based

here and at Arcavacata, stands the

modern University complex designed

by Vittorio Gregotti. A number of

multinational buildings are linked

together by a series of internal

walking areas and large open

spaces designed for aggregation.

The university is also residential,

organized on the lines of the

American campus.

The Norman Castle

The Norman Castle devoted to the

Byzantines, was useful to defend

themselves from Saraceni’s attacks.

Location: Rende, Dei Mille Street.

Date of construction: 937 B. C.

Brief History: The Norman Castle

was rebuilt in the 1132, because of

an earthquake.

Its origins are uncertain; the building

is attributed to the Byzantines but

later it was conquered by the Arabs

and after them, by Ruggiero II of

Sicily in 1132.

In 1184 the castle was damaged and

Frederick of Sweden rebuilt it, so it

was named “Norman Sweden

Castle”. In 1459 the Spanish used it

as a military place. After many other

earthquakes the Borbons used it as

a prison.

The Historic Centre of Rende

deserves a visit. Apart from the

“Museo Civico”, which houses

interesting works by Mattia Preti,

Cristoforo Santanna, Francesco De

Mura and Teodoro D’Errico and which

is to be found with the folklore

museum in the 18th century “Palazzo

Zagarese”, we also recommend a visit

to the “Church of the Rosario” and the

“Church of Santa Maria Maggiore”. In

the charming historic centre with its

ancient buildings we find the Church of

Santa Maria di Costantinopoli”, which,

contains beautiful paintings by

Cristoforo Santanna from RENDE.

Particularly interesting is the “Church

of San Francesco”, another 16th

century building that houses

interesting works of art.
